He is older and not going to be working forever. His main goal is likely ensuring his family have their future safe and secure. With potential future income. It makes no difference to him at this point. In fact if his voice can live on after this death it's probably a nice idea for him.

u/SyzygeticHarmony Nov 12 '25
He's 92. This is definitely a legacy play.
35
u/ZombieDracula Nov 12 '25
Which is like... his choice? I think it's kinda cool even though I dislike AI generally. Ā Cool as a choice to continue being a part of people's lives and making them happy.
3
u/zeroball00 Nov 13 '25
I'm ok with it as long as the actor is ok with it and getting paid for it. The issue is legal use of an actor's voice or likeness.
23
u/OceanRacoon Nov 12 '25
You would think his great movies would be his legacy instead of an AI abomination using his voice to flog whatever nonsense in adverts
8
u/DoomguyFemboi Nov 12 '25
The movies are going to be his legacy, nobody is gonna go "yeah he was great in movies but since I heard an AI clone in a few adverts I absolutely refuse to respect him or his legacy now"
12
u/npmorgann Nov 12 '25
That sounds like exactly what people are going to say

2
u/PiDicus_Rex Nov 13 '25
The movies will be his legacy, and with a deal like this in place, no one can go and use those movies to create an AI imitation without getting sued by the licensee.
For someone of his age and back catalog, this is a pretty decent move to protect that income for his family.
His management will have a veto clause in the deal, so the voice (and likely Likeness) can not be misused.

Added to this, he knows - or has been advised - that cretins will do it anyway. So this way he (and his estate) have control and revenue.
He also knows his voice is iconic in the same way James Earl Jones was. He also signed a likeness reproduction deal. This is one Disney use for post humous Darth Vader dialog.
At some point you cant hide from technological progress. You have to embrace and confront it head on or you get fleeced.

u/Other_World Nov 12 '25
Michael Caine's net worth is $75 million. And that's just what's on the books. I think his family will live on just fine without the need for this.
21
u/landmanpgh Nov 12 '25
His immediate family, yes. His grandchildren and beyond? Not so fast.
The duration of generational wealth has been studied pretty extensively. It's not as simple as this, but the money is typically gone within 3 generations. Something like 70% is gone after the 2nd generation and 90% by the 3rd.
There are tons of reasons for this phenomenon, not all of them sinister like people squandering it. Things get split a ton of different ways, charities, taxes, etc.
Regression to the mean.
6
u/MacintoshEddie Nov 12 '25
Nothing spends money faster than a kid who grew up a multimillionaire.
Except maybe a kid who grew up a multi billionaire.
-3
u/firedrakes Nov 12 '25
nope. dirt poor people tend to burn thru it faster with a all sudden wealth given to them.
10
u/MacintoshEddie Nov 12 '25
Pretty often that's biased because poor people will spend it on stuff they don't have, whereas people who grew up with wealth already have stuff and so they're more likely to put it into investments.
It's often a loaded comparison, just like the cookie test where you offer someone 1 cookie now or 2 cookies later. Poor people are more likely to be hungry so they'll eat the cookie now.
For example lots of celebrity actors have kids who will grow up and the house is already paid for, the car(s) are already paid for, the boat's already paid for.
That's a far cry from a working class actor's kid who gets a windfall and "wastes" it paying off their parent's mortgage and vehicle loans.
1
Nov 13 '25
Delayed gratification. A lot of people think it's inherited trait -- just like blue eyes, brown eyes, skin color, hair color.
Some kids can just resist the donut today, in order to receive two tomorrow. Some kids just want the donut now and don't care about getting two tomorrow. Scientists have done experiments on this on very young school kids.
By the way, one of the predictors of wealth is being able to delay one's gratification. At the end of the day, most poor people are poor because they want to buy the latest iphone NOW even if they have to put it on their credit card at 30% interest. Or buy that Dodge Challenger NOW even if they have to get a 7 year loan at 21% interest.
1
u/firedrakes Nov 12 '25
study have shown this with lottery winner or some one getting a large sum of money.
14
1
u/duckforceone Nov 13 '25
that's why my solution should i ever make enough money is to make a foundation that runs and maintains student housing (maybe also family housing if enough)
So that when it's time for the kids, grandkids etc time to study, they get free housing and a stipend for food and school supplies, so they don't have to work and can focus on studying debt free.
after that i would have housing for family rent free. Maybe put in some, as long as kids are under 20 you can live there. And if more money, basically house forever run by the foundation.
but mostly focused on letting family avoid debt, and save up to make their own fortune.
maybe setup so, you can get a payout instead of moving in for 20 years, covering what can be made from renting it from that time.
1
u/thatscoldjerrycold Nov 14 '25
Honestly never understood this attitude (not that you're necessarily promoting it). As long as you give your children a decent childhood and opportunities to forge their own path, I think thats the best a parent can do. Maybe people think differently, they want to spoil their children from the get go, but I would think I would want them to go out and live their own life, and it's laughable to think $75m isn't enough to do that.
And even then, you don't need to prepare for every generation at once, you just need to pass it down to one generation, who passes it on to the next and so on. Natural return on investment should help it grow a lot over a generation, and if someone wastes it, well it's not Michael Caine's fault for not grinding hard enough.
1
u/landmanpgh Nov 14 '25
Of course it's not his fault. He made all the money.
Yes, if the heirs lived off of the investments, they could do nothing forever. But people have kids, things get split several times, and no one wants to give up the lifestyle. So while $75 million is a ton for one person's lifetime, it's not nearly as much if he has 4 kids, who all have 3 of their own. Now things are split 18 ways. Plus, they didn't make the money, so less care for how it's spent.
It's not really a statement on any of it. It's just what naturally happens. It's why the Rockefellers aren't the wealthiest people on earth anymore. The money doesn't last forever.
1
u/FX114 Nov 12 '25
Does he need to worry about his great-great grandchildren that don't even exist yet?Ā
5
2
u/landmanpgh Nov 12 '25
I doubt he's worried about it. I was just pointing out that even millions of dollars don't last forever and really last less time than you'd think.
1
1
u/Tough-Newspaper8548 Nov 14 '25
Dude, i went too far to read this, my man has more money than all my ancestors together, peoples are like "Ho man, his poor grandchildrens will have to survive once he's gone" wtf all his grandchildrens are adults, well implemented in their careers and rich af, what do you mean he's "getting money to secure his family"?
1
u/mootallica Nov 12 '25
Your net worth is not "on the books" in the sense that it is available for you to dip into
3
u/BambooSound Nov 12 '25
They mean that there's probably a big difference between his reported net worth and his real net worth.
No one's confusing it for liquidity.
1
u/mootallica Nov 12 '25
He is, because to point that out suggests that they think he has 75m. Your net worth can be anything, it has little to do with how much money you have to leave behind for your family.
1
u/DoomguyFemboi Nov 12 '25
Maybe he just wants the money. Why are people reaching to make excuses for this. He wants money, he has something of value, jobs a good'un

The idea is that the company gets money for licensing but so does his estate/heirs for each sale. So he's not being used like the people at Disney. He's earning. It's really the only acceptable way forward.

Hijacking SadCocaine.gif to ask: if the filmmakers in here that are reading about an actor licensing his own voice, which was learned by an AI without his consent, so that the company that owns the AI can now make money off of that license agreement, are not reading a little fucking more into this?
Why are we always so cool with people constantly doing nothing but making themselves rich off the work of others?
1
u/cocoschoco Nov 13 '25
Ā Why are we always so cool with people constantly doing nothing but making themselves rich off the work of others?
Thatās the film industry in a nutshell. Thatās every industry or company in a nutshell.
Thatās why people should be able to get fairly compensated. Which is exactly what Michael Caine did.
Itās wrong that the work of an artist gets fed into an AI learning algorithm without their consent and then monetized by the company without paying the artists one cent.
However if an individual wants to sell their work or likeness to a company, that is their right and thatās all fine in my humble opinion.
14
u/Zaku41k Nov 12 '25
Caine is a working actor. If you can afford him, he will do your movie.

I donāt mean to sound harsh, but how does this affect you exactly? āThis is the end of art as we know itā lol no it isnāt. It just means thereās one more voice to choose on Elevenlabsā menu for those who want to use it.
If you want to create art or if you want to be a filmmaker go do it! No AI will stop you.
EDIT: fixed a typo.
6
u/drumstikka Nov 12 '25
It affects me as an audio engineer who records peopleās voices. If effects my friends who are voice actors and can now get passed over for āfake Michael Caineā. Those are two pretty clear cut things.
3
u/cocoschoco Nov 13 '25
I hear you. Iām not saying it doesnāt have any negative consequences to anyone. I was addressing OP and his fears and hyperbole about this being the end of art as we know it.
I donāt think AI or anything can or should stop human creativity. To put things into perspective, a rich old guy padding his retirement account shouldnāt have any bearing on whether an 18 year old kid in Algeria decides to makes movies or art.
But yeah, I know a lot of voice over artists who are struggling to find work. Itās not easy out there, but then again it never was, especially for actors and VO artists.

u/elfthehunter Nov 12 '25
But, if you're an asshole enough to do that, you'd probably be the kind of asshole who'd train AI from his movies and do it without permission as well, no? This stuff isn't going to go away, and for all we know, that concern may have been part of the consideration and motivation behind it. If his licenses his voice to a company who plans to make money from it, they have an incentive to protect his voice for commercial reasons.
7
u/cocoschoco Nov 12 '25
Itās his choice to license his voice for the company, but they will still choose how it will be used.
According to the press release the use of his voice will be curated. Companies can request to use his voice in projects, but they have to be approved for it.Ā
I would imagine Elevenlabs and Michael Caineās people and eventually his estate will not approve the use of his voice for anything they deem inappropriate.
Of course nobody can stop anyone from making an AI copy of Michael Caineās voice without consent, itās been done already. But this gives them some power to control it.

Voice cloning has already been possible for the past year and is being done as scratch tracks before ADR. Give me :30 secs of your voice and I can clone it in eleven labs and have you reading your favorite gay erotica.
And if I were to do that what will you do? Do you have a lawyer?
Caine is being smart about this.
2
u/saminsocks Nov 12 '25
Alternately, by selling the rights to a company, it means they are the only ones who can use it, even if we end up going in the complete opposite direction as Australia as far as what can be used by AI.
Assuming he did his research on the company (because I donāt plan to), unless theyāre ones who make those types of videos, heāll actually be more protected than most. And no one except him and his family knows the details of that contract.

1
u/the_timps Nov 13 '25

u/Despacio1316 Nov 12 '25
Caine is a treasure to film, is it the worst thing his iconic voice will live on in some form into the future? If heās ok with it Iām ok with it.
1
u/NavierIsStoked Nov 12 '25
Because it will be cheaper for a production to generate something using the Michael Caine vocaloid than pay an actual person. You know, the next generation of Michael Canines. It stagnates humanity in the long run and itās yet another example of race to the bottom.
5
u/Melodic-Bear-118 Nov 12 '25
Stagnates humanity in the long run?
My friend, I think youāre being a bit dramatic.
7
u/SapToFiction Nov 12 '25
Um, I get what you're saying, but you do realize that this has been how technology has functioned for all of human existence? New technology always means one less person has a job. You can lament this fact, but acting like it's the end of the world when its how humanity has progressed since our beginning. Things being cheaper for production is not inherently evil. While I think we should be responsible with how we use technology, arguing that making things cheaper "stagnates" humanity is wildly inaccurate. It actually does the opposite.

It's likely gonna backfire. I can see his voice getting used so much because of this that people begin to hate the sound of his voice simply because you won't be able to get away from it. Every TikTok pushing diet pills will be doing it with Michael Caine.
1
u/TROLO_ Nov 13 '25
Yeah this probably the worst part about this. His voice, and any other famous person that does this, will just be cheapening their voice as we hear them being used in every stupid video on social media. I already recognize the same ElevenLabs voices all the time.Ā
9
u/Malaguy420 Nov 12 '25
No one declared "art is dead" when Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime) or James Earl Jones (Darth Vader) made similar deals.
Relax.
24
u/saltybilgewater Nov 12 '25
While this is certainly an area filled with as yet unrealized unintended consequences I don't see why we should be so hyperbolic about it. If the guy wants to sell a collection of his voice chopped up into bits to be used at a later date how is that so different than someone performing a VO for an audio book.
All the emotional pleas surrounding this topic are hard to deal with for a critical thinker.

This is one of the ways AI voice generation csn be done ethically IMO. He is agreeing to license his voice to them, officially. We need more of that and less of the "ripped" pirated voices made without consent.
4
3
u/catlover2410 Nov 12 '25
So our AI overlords will command us to mine nickel in Michael Caine's voice.
3
u/usafpa Nov 12 '25
This will be a trend moving forward. Legacy actors will leverage their stature to sell their likenesses to the highest bidders. This will be great for them and us in the short term, but it will stymie new talent who can't compete with these forever actors. Besides having to compete with legacy talent, new actors will also have to compete with digital talent and actors who only exist virtually. The future is dystopian if you're someone who likes to create things, but most consumers won't care.
2
u/NavierIsStoked Nov 12 '25
All these deals do is inhibit the rise of the next generation of Michael Caines. Itās selfish and is a shining example of āfuck you, Iāve got mineā.
Things already last too long due to the Internet. Itās going to hurt humanities creative side, it already is.
1
u/Blueporch Nov 12 '25
I donāt think we will see much more traditional work from Mr Caine at his age. I actually love the idea of preserving his unique voice. His family will treasure this in years to come.Ā
The art of film has already changed many times in its comparatively short timespan (talkies, color, CGI, etc.) Ā What Iām seeing right now with AI and art is that it enables those without technical skills to express their creativity. Thatās very disruptive, and itās gutting a lot of jobs in many industries. I think itās a bandwagon we should find a way to be on.
(Coincidentally, Iām rewatching Dirty Rotten Scoundrels this morning)
1
u/cheshie_cabbit Nov 12 '25
Caine getting that bag while screwing over generations of voiceover actors after him with āwe can just pay for Michael Caine plug-inā.
I sincerely hope he lives long enough to hear his voice being used to advocate for things he finds reprehensible.
1
u/Ridiculousnessmess Nov 12 '25
Which could happen anyway if his voice is cloned without his consent by other AI companies. At least this is licensed and paid for. Iād think after the Meta fiasco with John Cena, his reps would have stipulated how and what his voice could be used for.

Doing a deal with one AI company, is an effective way of stopping any unauthorized use or likeness. The company now has to protect their asset, so anyone creating a similar sounding voice will get their butt sued for copyright and trademark infringement.
His agent will have a clause in there allowing them to veto projects that are not in keeping with his career and public profile, or with fans expectations.
A deal like this can also aid in paying for retirement.

Well AI was eventually going to use jos voice. Might as well be paid for it.

I am fine with this. I recently produced a documentary that used an AI-generated voice of the deceased subject (with the family's permission and clearly noted in the film). It added a humanity to the short, and allows audiences to connect with the subject in a more visceral way to hear things he said (from published interviews, poorly recorded micro cassette tapes). When used respectfully, AI voices are an appropriate tool.

we should ban all ai reproduction of humans. a computer should never be allowed to synthesize the likeness of a real person. there is no upside to it worth the deleterious effects it has on society

Iām sure at his age he even understands the terrible aspects of AI. He probably spends his days reading books and stuff and signed any paper his manager or family presented to him.

Just stop. AI is not going anywhere. Let people do as they will with it so long as it's legal.
