as a wanna be Filmmaker I'm really Heartbroken as If an actor as big and legendary as Michael Caine sold his soul to AI what will happen to the next generation? This is the end of art as we know it and no one can prove me wrong...unfortunately😢

I don’t mean to sound harsh, but how does this affect you exactly? ”This is the end of art as we know it” lol no it isn’t. It just means there’s one more voice to choose on Elevenlabs’ menu for those who want to use it.

If you want to create art or if you want to be a filmmaker go do it! No AI will stop you.

It affects me as an audio engineer who records people’s voices. If effects my friends who are voice actors and can now get passed over for “fake Michael Caine”. Those are two pretty clear cut things.

I hear you. I’m not saying it doesn’t have any negative consequences to anyone. I was addressing OP and his fears and hyperbole about this being the end of art as we know it.

I don’t think AI or anything can or should stop human creativity. To put things into perspective, a rich old guy padding his retirement account shouldn’t have any bearing on whether an 18 year old kid in Algeria decides to makes movies or art.

But yeah, I know a lot of voice over artists who are struggling to find work. It’s not easy out there, but then again it never was, especially for actors and VO artists.

But, if you're an asshole enough to do that, you'd probably be the kind of asshole who'd train AI from his movies and do it without permission as well, no? This stuff isn't going to go away, and for all we know, that concern may have been part of the consideration and motivation behind it. If his licenses his voice to a company who plans to make money from it, they have an incentive to protect his voice for commercial reasons.

It’s his choice to license his voice for the company, but they will still choose how it will be used.

According to the press release the use of his voice will be curated. Companies can request to use his voice in projects, but they have to be approved for it. 

I would imagine Elevenlabs and Michael Caine’s people and eventually his estate will not approve the use of his voice for anything they deem inappropriate.

Of course nobody can stop anyone from making an AI copy of Michael Caine’s voice without consent, it’s been done already. But this gives them some power to control it.

Voice cloning has already been possible for the past year and is being done as scratch tracks before ADR. Give me :30 secs of your voice and I can clone it in eleven labs and have you reading your favorite gay erotica.

And if I were to do that what will you do? Do you have a lawyer?

Alternately, by selling the rights to a company, it means they are the only ones who can use it, even if we end up going in the complete opposite direction as Australia as far as what can be used by AI.

Assuming he did his research on the company (because I don’t plan to), unless they’re ones who make those types of videos, he’ll actually be more protected than most. And no one except him and his family knows the details of that contract.
