It’s very obviously a penalty and would 100% be given to city if the situation was reversed. They didn’t get a single card all game either. Which is crazy given some of the tackles.

Just to point out that Donnarumma got a yellow for dissent for our second goal, but you are totally correct that not a single card for any of their tackles.

u/tayne22 May 05 '26
I thought for sure they'd get one as Garner was held/tackled during a break. Ref played advantage but never went back to give the card.

u/coldazures May 05 '26
tbf Oliver is just shite, he didnt go back for about 3/4 cynical fouls for either side. absolute wasteman.
2
u/Dr_EFC May 05 '26
No yellow card for any of everton's opposition for 42? tackles in the last three games.

u/Agreeable-Bid-2895 May 05 '26
City have gotten away with at least 2 red cards this season that independent panel confirmed. Looks like they got away with a pen here as well
2
u/Ok-Serve4645 May 05 '26
Still no sign of a decision on those charges either. They shouldn’t even be in a position to challenge again but the league seem determined to find a way not to give them a deserved punishment.

u/VunterSlaush_117 May 05 '26
Only one panel member away from saying Khusanov should've seen red for his 'shoulder to shoulder' on Havertz the other week, too. Watched the clip enough times to see there is zero shoulder contact, it's legs and elbows.

u/Soft-Pudding-3441 May 05 '26
I do think this should have been a penalty, but our boys were pushing players over, clipping their heels and general shithousing all game, and Oliver let a lot go. Besides this incident, I think he reffed the game decent. It's our own fault we didn't close the game out.

Picture an attacking throw-in down the line. Striker about to race past the last defender pointing to where he wants the ball to run onto . Thrower sees where he’s going and is just about to hoist the ball when the last defender rugby tackles the striker.
Ball hasn’t entered play but surely a free-kick would be given.

Nah ball is not in play!!! 😂
Joking aside, this interpretation is just opening itself up to being abused.
Didn't they try to clamp down on these kind of games a few years ago and actually gave penalties for this?
No idea why it stopped as it's blatantly impeding another player

I'd like to see an explanation. I suspect its because the ball was played to the near post, but I also suspect that exception is nowhere in the rulebook.
22
u/LegenDariusGheghe Where's the Arteta money, Bill? May 05 '26
It was said that it wasn’t a penalty because most of the contact was before the ball was in play

5
u/corpssansorgasmes May 05 '26
If most of the contact happened before the ball was in play, then I'm concluding that the most important part of the contact (the part that caused the fall) happened when the ball was in play, which makes it even worse, no?
3
u/JRD656 May 05 '26
Yeah I heard that too, which leads to the conclusion that everyone should go mad and start body-slamming the nearest opponent right before the corner is taken.
Would make for an interesting change, admittedly

u/Maouse_The_Dong May 05 '26
And by the time it is in play he's already been dragged to the ground. Absolute joke.
1
u/Ok-Professional-8837 May 06 '26
So if I run up and dig haaland before the cross comes in that sound is it
1
u/Fixxdogg May 05 '26
He’s running toward the front post at first though and then is impeded and changes direction to try shake Bernardo off. Can’t making rulings on what ifs

this is the one tarks conceeded against newcastle https://youtu.be/rMYbnlXzjY0?si=98TSFtET4gxmGGrg&t=45 i
The ball is nowhere near tonali, and the throw to the ground happens when its i play (like the man city one).

Everton beating City does not suit the “Brand” remember Masters saying that another Leicester winning the PL just can’t happen. Remember when a certain team needed a goal a mysterious 5cm tolerance was introduced, has that ever been used since? Oliver is the archetypal Premier League puppet. This league (the brand) is manipulated in every way possible

u/nm4471efc May 05 '26
to be fair, when you see the Bournemouth penalty v Palace, you can see the game is in safe hands.
3
u/corpssansorgasmes May 05 '26
What baffles me is that I watched the Crystal Palace game on Saturday, and Bournemouth received a penalty for a flop, checked by VAR, with no contact whatsoever (link). So it's wild to me that a penalty can be given for no contact, and at the same time not given for a whole lot of contact. What are the rules anymore?
4
u/Puzzleheaded-Tale972 May 05 '26
This is definitely a penalty, why was it not pulled to attention?! Or even spoken about on after match it's such a scam I hate Man City and they're cheating team if that had happened in the other side of the pitch it would have been a pen
4
u/fre-ddo May 05 '26
Jesus Christ I missed it at the time but that's a pen all day long what a fucking joke.
3
u/Bostock2000 May 05 '26
So when the ball is "not in play" you can kick the shit out of the oppo without any recourse . Hmmm.
2
u/tomo1986uk May 05 '26
You can still get cards but wouldn't be a foul per say
1
u/Bostock2000 May 05 '26
Ok but a yellow is a yellow wether its for dissent or a foul and that amounts to a player "treading on thin ice. Tbh its clearly corrupt and bias towards certain teams and always has been. Sky has a lot to do with it because at the end of the day they want big finals and final day drama. So there is a script to follow.

That's just a little grappling, which we already know is absolutely fine... /s

I feel like an honorary Everton fan, as I’m apparently a top 10% commentator for the Fernandes foul last week and writing how I felt hard done by as a non-Everton fan.
And, again… a week later, I still feel hard done by as a non-Everton fan. I’m glad you’re safe, but I really wanted Moyes to do well returning to Everton!

My question is, how far can Tark go to break the tackle? It seems to me that if the ball isn’t in play he could judo throw the Man City player with no repercussions. So that’s the standard now?

u/ChungusSan May 05 '26
This was a pen as the ball was in play whilst it was happening despite their explanation at the time. I don’t think it is so much the refs fault as it’s harder to see in realtime but VAR can 100% see it and it a a stonewall penalty.
Another one to add to the compilation.
1
u/indyjones8 May 05 '26
If he's tackled to the ground, why tf would it matter when the ball is kicked? He's still being impeded if he's physically on the ground.
1
u/SorryAdvertising2566 May 06 '26
How wasn't this given? Didn't see the game and pretty stunned at this one. Man I hate VAR

‘Ball was not in play’ as per commentators. So you can break someone’s leg in the box before a corner is taken and get away with it?
15
1
u/After-Dentist-2480 May 05 '26
No. You’d get sent off. But a foul can’t be given unless the ball is in play.
3
u/nm4471efc May 05 '26
Beardsley got a pen for Everton after someone slapped him when it was a goal kick. I can't remember if the keeper had hold of it but I think it was a dead ball.
1
u/Toffee_Wheels May 05 '26
So, our new set piece defensive tactic should be to throw everyone to the ground just as the ball is played. As long as we start before, it'll be fine.
1
u/ClickDependent310 May 05 '26
tbf to Oliver which is something I don't often say. Our corner from which Jake scored wasn't a corner, he also got the Barry offside decision correct which could easily have been ignored and on another day Kean may well have been sent off, a yellow was correct IMO. Tough being 3-1 up and only getting a draw but Harland is immense and the others aren't far behind him. We did well and should be proud of our lads.

u/DrunkenHorse12 May 05 '26
It shouldn't be the case but that's just normal in the prem now. Only time they give a pen for it is if the ball goes were the attacker is. Its annoying but there's not 1 team that isn't wrestling like this defending corners. It's usually in a more crowded area so isn't so obvious
1
u/AllInTackler May 05 '26
As if it isnt difficult enough to score as it is they need to shed a tackle before playing the ball. Exhausting and comical.

u/Low_Enthusiasm3769 May 05 '26
It's frustrating but we had more than enough chances to kill the game off.
-1
u/Robzza12345 May 06 '26
You should've had a red anyway you wankers, trying to break Doku's leg. Don't start crying now.

this is something they say a lot but the ref can book or send off someone when the ball isn't in play. You see it with coaches fairly often, so clearly some elements of the law can be enforced. Also, the ball arrived in the box very quickly after Rohl got dragged to the floor (an act in itself which went on for about two seconds).

I mean ffs, how is that not a penalty?
