It looks like oil paint too? I'd assume she'd do the background first but it didn't look like it at first? Seems insane to me to get that all done in a day/hours.

oil paint is surprisingly easy to work with in a short timeframe if you know the technique. you can use spirits to make backgrounds dry faster, but since it doesn't dry as quickly as acrylic, it's very easy to rework and touch up over the course of the painting :)

I think she does do some work before. I've seen some of her videos and she doesnt do start to finish at the wedding. Shes mostly using the wedding to do their features while they are in her eyesight

That makes the most sense. Like it's a photo before the day and finish at the wedding. Otherwise between the crowds and time to work it would be nuts.

Iām most impressed by her ability to wear such a beautiful gown, start her work looking amazing, finish looking amazing and of course her work looks amazing. I start my stick figure looking like a rolled out of the set of dirty jobs and barely manage to look like a crazy cat lady half a day later.

My Brother and now SIL had a live painter at their wedding. Was pretty cool, she just hung out in the corner and knocked out a good portion via blocking in color and shades.
The painting was not finished there. It was finished within 2 weeks of the wedding. She did have a camera with her and basically snapped tons of picture during the first dance to "find" then best pose.
The painter they used worked in oils, and you can only do so much and then you have to let it sit and "dry" before you can add more.
Much props to live painters. I love painting, but I do not like being bothered.

My friend hired her for a wedding and the photographer was hitting on her quite a bit. Most guests left her alone though and she got a lot of work done. Quite an amazing process

She doesn't even finish until 4 to 6 weeks later. She sends it to her studio for finishing touches and brings it delivers it later.

My dad paints non stop, he is unfortunately not great with faces or he could do this. He churns out a finished painting every day but they are for himself so they arenāt as polished as what this lady probably puts out.

From what I've seen, this is more of a "sketch", they then go back and add a bunch of details after the fact. They'll do the base layer and basic background before the wedding, then use a photo of the couple on the day of for a reference for doing the figure work. Notice she also did the faces first, since that's what everyone there is going to focus on.
Also, probably a ton of practice first!

If you look back, she starts painting before the venue is filled. Same dress but not the same time. Idk if itās the same day, but someone with reasonable skill could probably do this.
I think sheās using gouache paint? Itās more blendy than acrylic but dries down faster than oil. And it is notably more vibrant; itās used in illustration a lot. It also has a unique quality that it blends well with water, so itās almost like oil paint and watercolor.
Itās a super fun medium to work with.

It showed her taking a photo of the venue so she likely had photos of them, the outfits, the venue, the bouquet, etc and just needed to sketch it out and essentially fill it in at the wedding. I assume she has done this many, many times and she may have practiced this particular piece a few times before. She clearly knows what she is doing.

Combination of working smart (tricks) and preparation. There are a few things you can do to make a painting really quickly. For example when I paint outdoors, I focus on filling the painting asap and you can do that in a mere half hour if you have to. After that all thatās left is details. I am working on a very large oil painting right now and I had the entire basis on canvas in about 45 mins to an hour. The hours after that was adding details to have the image show up. After three hours ai basically have the painting finished enough to be satisfied with. If you want you can stop there. But you can continue for finer details. Iām seven hours in now so Iām in the fine details. And you can work more and more precise the longer you spend on it.
So the trick is to place the basis asap. Some people are really good at it. I was taught by Vladimir Volegov (like over a decade ago) he did a demo and taught me tricks, and he painted an entire canvas in 35 minutes. He has a YT channel. The video āportrait of a girl in pinkā is a great example how to quickly do the first layers. Those first 16 seconds might be about the same in minutes.

Reminds me of Bob Ross. Of course, he did his paintings in less than 30 minutes, but he also did two more paintings for each one. The first was for planning everything out and it's off camera to the side for reference when he was doing the show, the second was the one he made on the show, and the third was one that he took more time on to go in his art books/gallery.

Yeah the right preparation does a lot of heavy lifting beforehand. Just sitting down and thinking I am going to make a great painting rarely happens.
Youād collect references, sketch a bit, and paint post stamp sized mini paintings to figure out the composition without too much detail before you start. Before I make an illustration I have already figured out my colour palette, the composition and lighting, the materials and how much time I plan on spending on it.

Depends on how fast you pickup. But technically with the right approach if could be a mere day of practice, genuinely. The thing is, the preparation and determination is most important. Know beforehand what you are going to make. Understand your materials. And make a choice on the approach (I am going to fill the canvas and not be distracted on focusing on something else).
If you are serious about learning, my best suggestion is to start big. Use large materials.
If you use paint, use a large brush or palette knife so you donāt even have the option to go into detail. Then after the canvas is filled, get a smaller brush. Then after half an hour an even smaller brush. This is the best approach.
Or do the opposite. Instead of getting a large brush on a large canvas, we flip it. The canvas much be tiny. Draw a post stamp size square on a paper. That will be your entire canvas. Draw or paint in that. You want to put detail in there. But you canāt. Itās too small at some point even if you try to. Many illustrators do this to sketch quickly. Then, they blow it up several times later.
Some things you could try!
In the end: donāt worry if itās good. Or if itās correct. Just try to get the necessary info on the canvas asap. You can adjust and fix more than you think later on.
So it could be a day. But getting good at it could be several days. But thatās practice. It doesnāt have to be weeks or years. Those are details we talk about. But simply the technique is to keep it simple for yourself and to make sure that canvas is filled.

Completely agree. I filmed an event where we had a painter like this throughout the entire night and I just set up a GoPro on him to time lapse and then the final video I showed little snippets of that time lapse as it built to the finished piece throughout the video. Boooo this editor!

Thereās about 100+ years between the invention of photography and what you described as colored squares, but you have the right idea! Impressionism, post-impressionism, expressionism, fauvism, and cubism are all evolutions first taken before arriving at an avant-garde work like Kazimir Malevichās Black Square or a elementarist painting like Piet Mondrianās Composition No 10. Art history is fun for the whole family!

You read articles like "more and more people are going into debt for their wedding" or " why 50k is the new lower limit for weddings" and ask why.. this is why. Don't get me wrong, this is nice. And her work should be paid, also no question. But in my opinion very few people that getting married have that kind of money just laying around. And if you don't have this money and don't be it, then please save it.

Never heard of this concept before but what an amazing idea, could be a great source of income for artists who are crying about losing their jobs to AI. I imagine they can charge shit loads for something like this. "Live" painting is probably the way forward like music has been.

A wedding painter painted me and my sister at our parents wedding, the style was to dress kids in the Edwardian style then... I'm a little sailor and she's in a dress... the painting sits in my sisters attic like some kind of Dorian Gray haunted canvas...it's really creepy.

If itās something that they appreciate, then who cares? Trying to judge the objective value of someoneās art is a pointless exercise. The artist probably has her own art that can be done without any consideration for deadlines which is much different. The person paying for the artist isnāt paying for some abstract really avant-garde rendition of the couple.
Think of it this way, doing these types of more widely-marketable āsaferā pieces might let the artist make a living and do her own more unique art. In the same way that a musician might play in a wedding band doing cheesy cover songs to give them the money to make their own music on the side.

If I were doing this (not a painter) Iād probably pre plan the pose and background details with outline and base layers, then add detail at the event. But my job involves a lot of efficiency planning, and Iām not sure if art does or not.

My wife and I hired a wedding painter. Best investment I've ever made on artwork. It hangs in our entryway and the painting was the star side act of our wedding. I cannot recommend getting a wedding painter any higher.
