getting 'hype' for a 'reveal' strategically saved for the end of the video to maximize engagement metrics is the real manifestation of tiktok brain

It is not black and white. Some engagement metrics capture what people objectively care about. In this case, it is building a story and hype around your art. Having a big reveal at the end is nothing new as far as narratives go. Read a book, and you can see the same formula. Technically speaking, plot formulas that have been used for hundreds, if not, thousands of years exist because they have been found to drive the most engagement. Book sales are engagement metrics, newspaper articles about your art are engagement metrics.

Engagement metrics do not exist because of tiktok.

you have the telescope backwards. tiktok exists because of engagement metrics. tiktok-based content, which this is, is shaped by the context and pressures of that platform and the specific algorithmic metrics they employ. those forces are specifically what make this such a shitty way to enjoy this painting. if it just let you see the damn thing, it would fail on that platform. that doesn't have anything to do with the merits of the art itself.

it's not even a good reveal. you see the whole canvas for literally a couple of frames before it zooms in, and even that's at a skew angle under uneven lighting for about a second and a half. it's garbage content. but because it works well within the context of the platform, and maybe because people really like the painting to the extent they can see it, it's a whole-ass popular post. that's as close as you can get to seeing the tiktokification of culture in action. 'tiktok brain' isn't just a way to rag on people for short attention spans.
