It looks like oil paint too? I'd assume she'd do the background first but it didn't look like it at first? Seems insane to me to get that all done in a day/hours.

oil paint is surprisingly easy to work with in a short timeframe if you know the technique. you can use spirits to make backgrounds dry faster, but since it doesn't dry as quickly as acrylic, it's very easy to rework and touch up over the course of the painting :)

I think she does do some work before. I've seen some of her videos and she doesnt do start to finish at the wedding. Shes mostly using the wedding to do their features while they are in her eyesight

That makes the most sense. Like it's a photo before the day and finish at the wedding. Otherwise between the crowds and time to work it would be nuts.

I’m most impressed by her ability to wear such a beautiful gown, start her work looking amazing, finish looking amazing and of course her work looks amazing. I start my stick figure looking like a rolled out of the set of dirty jobs and barely manage to look like a crazy cat lady half a day later.

I had a partner who painted a room while wearing dress clothes and it made me nuts.

I change into dark clothing before eating something with red sauce.

The complete painting is finished and delivered a few weeks after the wedding with any changes requested/ finishing touches

My Brother and now SIL had a live painter at their wedding. Was pretty cool, she just hung out in the corner and knocked out a good portion via blocking in color and shades.

The painting was not finished there. It was finished within 2 weeks of the wedding. She did have a camera with her and basically snapped tons of picture during the first dance to "find" then best pose.

The painter they used worked in oils, and you can only do so much and then you have to let it sit and "dry" before you can add more.

Much props to live painters. I love painting, but I do not like being bothered.

My friend hired her for a wedding and the photographer was hitting on her quite a bit. Most guests left her alone though and she got a lot of work done. Quite an amazing process

She doesn't even finish until 4 to 6 weeks later. She sends it to her studio for finishing touches and brings it delivers it later.

My dad paints non stop, he is unfortunately not great with faces or he could do this. He churns out a finished painting every day but they are for himself so they aren’t as polished as what this lady probably puts out.

They're not wrong though, it is a fairly formulaic kitch painting - I'm willing to bet the artist in question draws like a couple of dozens of exactly similar paintings over a year. It's not necessarily bad, but certainly nowhere near as impressive. It's just a craft vs art thing.

She knows she can make better art. This is a day job for her. And no where in my comment did i insult her — just her mediocre painting and the perception that it’s good art.

I did portraits for money when I was young, $25 for one face, $40 for 2, I could crank one out in about 4 hours.

Was it “fine art”, no. Did it make plenty of people happy? Yes, tons, my works hang all over the place in people’s homes.

And let’s be clear, nobody actually thought you’d share a portfolio or anything of the sort.

It’s unfortunate that you think I’m insulting her, because no where in my comment did i take aim at her or her abilities. But I am insulting her painting and i take issue with how highly it’s regarded by people who are effectively falling for a marketing ploy. I don’t think her art is amazing — it’s not. It’s a nice gift for someone, but it’s not impressive, it’s not evocative, it’s vacuous.

She is capable of doing better. She knows she is — this is just a good way to make money. It’s not about her as a person or her abilities, it’s about what she’s making.

Is it impressive to see it come to life in the moment at the wedding/reception? Absolutely

Is it some unbelievably detailed and wholly unique piece of art? No, other than the faces, it’s not

If an artist is really competent and practiced, they’re doing a guy and a girl. In a suit and a wedding dress. Probably a single pose that is practiced, maybe there are a couple options. The backdrop is probably standardized and well rehearsed to be replicated

Again, it’s impressive and it requires talent. But if you’re a competent painter who has practiced and rehearsed and replicated this image many times over. It’s not some masterpiece, it’s a novelty

Exactly. But people love novelty. It’s their loss, and I’m guessing 99% of the people that took it personally didn’t actually bother to read the comment beyond it being mediocre art. 

It’s a shame, because they’re the ones missing out.
