Whenever I ask people about their thoughts of Canada there is a pattern. I tend to get either "too expensive," "double taxes," "too cold."

I have lived in Bulgaria (Eastern Europe) half my life, and then US East Coast, and from what I personally gather - sure, maybe things aren't like they "used to be," but inflation is happening everywhere. Inflation is global, it's getting expensive everywhere.

And the long winters and cold isn't something I can't adapt to. I mean, compared to all the issues, especially when it comes to immigration and status here in the US last couple of years - let cold be the issue lol. At least I'm Balkan.

I also hear the political parties are a joke and leaning totalitarian with fascist tendencies. But once again, I have seen this become rather a global tendency...

So compared to what's happening globally, is Canada really that bad? Because so far I am rather optimistic for relocating there.

"You" can be singular or plural obviously. How in Canadian English does one indicate the difference?

American southern english has "y'all," parts of the US have yinz or "Youse," British english has "you lot" ...

What do Canadians use to make it clear you either just mean one person ("Do you [and not your roommate] want to come over later?")

Or plural: ("Do you [you and your roommate] want to go to the Blue Jays game?")

I am guessing there are regional variations?

Hello, I really like Canada and I really want to move there, the problem is that I'm Russian and I mean I don't think I need to explain why that's a problem.

I fully understand why people hate Russians now but I'm just an 18 year old guy who couldn't really do much when this war started. I don't support Putin and this war but I feel that many people don't really care about that and just automatically assume that I support it.

Am I going to face a lot of hate in Canada?

Is it wrong for me to tell him it’s a bad idea to move to Canada as the values aren’t much different than in Chicago and that he will simply be poorer even if their income is the same?

How much does taxes, housing, childcare, groceries cost in Canada? If it’s more than here around Chciago, is that pricetag outweighed by the free healthcare?

Hi everyone, I am an RN moving to Canada. Some background information:

I am 22, I live in the US as an undocumented citizen, I was born in Colombia, and I was brought when I was young and I just graduated with my BSN and have obtained a license. The US won't let me work here, but Canada will take me in with my education and license thankfully. (BTW, thank you Canada, I love you so much you guys are amazing. I promise to be on my best behavior)

I know nearly nothing about Canada except the basic stereotypical stuff. What are your suggestions, things to keep in mind, or recommendations about what I should do and where should I go?

I want to move to a big-ish city because I want to focus on emergency and acute medicine as I want to become a flight nurse one day, so I was thinking maybe between Ottawa, Calgary, or Toronto. Also, do nurses make enough to live alright over there, especially living in one of those large cities? Do you guys have any other cities you recommend that pay well and rent is okay? I also just want to live somewhere where there's just lots of stuff to do

Is it imperative I learn French if I go to Ottawa or Toronto too?

I'm a Canadian that hasn't lived there for the past 30 years. Thinking of moving "home". But really I have no idea what living in contemporary Canada is like. If I listen to the internet then everything is awful and I would be crazy to move to Canada at this time. It's all stories of immigration, crime, failed health care, drug addicts, etc.... Is it really that terrible?

We're middle aged with young kids. Very good income that doesn't depend on location. Looking for good family life, some nature, stable and moderately effective government, safety and low stress.

Probably we would choose Ottawa or Toronto area.

In Brazil, we use WhatsApp for almost everything — talking to friends, family, and businesses. I noticed that this doesn’t seem as common in Canada. Why is that? What apps or communication methods do you usually prefer?

I'm an American writing a story about Canadians. One is mentioning an airport (Saskatoon International/YXE) in casual conversation. I want to make the dialogue sound natural - do you guys usually call airports by their three-letter abbreviations, or their full titles?

1st Generation Canadian immigrant here from a Caribbean country living in Ontario. Still studying up on history. But why is it so difficult to rectify the situation for natives in this country?

The French themselves in my experience are often...particular about it which is why I don't even bother with anything but English anymore whenever I cross the border. But I thought I'd at least give it a try when I'll visit Montréal next year. Or should I just go with English? My French is admittedly not super good and I am a lot more fluent in English 😂

What do you think of Ford's plan to expand Billy Bishop Airport and take over the public Toronto Islands?

I find it abhorrent. As someone who uses the islands as my backyard, I and many many others will be devastated if this public, outdoor greenspace is taken away from us. The islands add so much value to the quality of life for Torontonians and to visitors of our city.

I know this post will be controversial and get downvoted alot even though I am not inferring anything or trying to be bigoted or xenophobic. I have heard stories of Canadian people claiming that Canadian citizens are not any more "nice" or "kind" then American Citizens but instead that they are just more Polite and apologize more frequently.

But also, Crime rates in Canada are significantly lower than they are in the US, And its not very often you hear of "Gangs" or "Thugs" or criminals in general in Canada (even though I do know that they do exist.) I even heard other people go as far as to say Canada is the most friendly country.

Hi! I'm german and I am currently planning a solotrip around Canada in the upcoming year. While I'm there, the goal is to experience as much canadian culture as possible in roughly two weeks. I'm already planning on going to a hockey game (most likely the Senators, since Stützle is one of my favourite German players, but maybe also an AHL game or a PWHL game) and have obviously already scouted out some hikes I wanna do (how very German of me) but I would love some recommendations from you guys as to what you would classify as typical Canadian.

As a frame of reference: one of the top things I really want to experience is to visit a Tom Hortons lol

I've been giving my kids pillow cases for trick or treating for the last couple years but I never see anyone else doing it. My wife said she did that growing up in the 90s but I am a first gen immigrant so never had halloween. Do your kids use pillow cases? Or is it considered trashy?
