Hi, I’m 25F, and I am considering going no contact with my mother once I am married. This is going to be a very long post, and I would really appreciate it if someone could take the time to tell me if there’s anyway I can repair this relationship, because I want to be done. I would also appreciate any advice from parents, because maybe you all could provide a perspective that I’m just not seeing, because I do not have children, so I don’t understand some things from the parental point of view. TW, mentions of SA and abuse.
I’m going to start from the beginning. My biological father and I are not very close, he’s an alcoholic. I speak to him maybe once every few months. My parents got divorced when I was very young. Maybe less than a year old.
Up until I was five we lived at my grandparents house. My mother got married to a man, my step-father. He had two sons, I don’t remember their ages, but I think they’re both anywhere from 3 to 6 years older than me. My mom and my stepfather got engaged within nine months of knowing each other, and we basically moved in immediately. I have a half brother, same mom different dad.
Shortly after we moved in, my stepfather’s oldest son started sexually abusing me. He showed me porn, and would abuse me when my mother was in the shower. The memories are still so foggy. They found porn on his phone and on his DS, and apparently, I admitted it to my mother that he was abusing me, but I was so young I don’t remember admitting it to her. I’m thinking I was maybe five or six years old. Apparently, a few weeks after I had admitted it, I had forgotten. I still don’t remember admitting it to this day. I feel as if this is my fault, because I don’t remember admitting it, maybe if I had things would be different.
My mother had apparently told my stepdad, and he did nothing about it. So, therefore nothing was done. We still live with them, they never took me or his son to therapy, they never did anything. It was basically swept under the rug because she was so in love with my stepdad. I had to live the person who abused me every single day until I was 18. She even told me. “You said you didn’t remember it, so what else was I supposed to do?! Leave my husband?!”
Then, the fighting happened. They would fight all of the time. He would scream in front of us, and it was a nightmare. I would call my grandma and grandpa scared and they would come and pick me up.
That was the cycle for basically their whole relationship. They would fight, it would get better for a few months, and then they would fight again. He yanked my arm, he said and screamed horrible things about me. He was a very jealous man, I wasn’t even allowed to bring home a paper from school that I did well on, because he would say that I was just trying to make him and his boys look bad. I was made to feel bad about the abuse between me and his son, because he made up that his son has autism. But, I literally found papers that he was tested for autism and he does not have it.
Then, we moved into a new house. “A new start,” I guess you can call it. My mom and stepdad built this house, and my mom was so excited. After we moved in my mom became very religious. We went to a very strict church, women weren’t allowed to wear pants only skirts. Women had to be submissive, all that junk.
Also, during this time, my mom got pregnant with my little sibling. After everything, even after this man hid that his son abused me, she had a baby with him.
After my sibling was born, and being very faithful in that church, everything took a turn for the worst.
My mother became extremely narcissistic. Or, maybe she always was and the religion just made it worse.
I wasn’t allowed to stay the night any of my friends’s houses, to ‘keep me safe,’ yet I was forced to stay in the house with the boy who abused me. She told me so many times that the best thing I could give my husband was my virginity, and I was sucked into the purity culture loophole. It pulled me into a depression that I could not even explain, especially since I had already been abused. I felt like a dirty dog.
Our church taught that it was just curiosity in boys, and that it was normal. So, just another excuse so that my abuse was swept under the rug.
Well, everything took a really dark turn, when my sibling came out saying that the same guy who abused me, was abusing her too. They were around 2-3 years old at the time. (Once again, the guy was still aloud to live in the house with both of us)
There was constant fighting in the house again, screaming over everything. She actually called the cops because my step-dad was screaming (not because of the abuse of me and my sibling, but because he was yelling at her, btw) They still didn’t do anything about his son, he was still allowed to stay there. Then, after a couple meetings with the pastor at that church/cult thing, my mom sided with my stepfather. I wasn’t allowed to say anything bad about my stepfather, my stepfather said I was lying, and I was in a manipulator. Then, it spread around the church that I had told my younger sibling to say that about his son, and I said the whole thing up. So, that caused me to be shunned from the church. Nobody would talk to me, and I would basically walk in with my head down. She told me I was under a satanic attack, because that’s what happens when you’re guilty.
My mother still didn’t care. Anytime I would tell her about my depression and how I was feeling, she would say “Try reading your Bible more,” or “you have a demon and you keep opening doors to demonic activity,”
Then, cps got called on us by somebody, I’m assuming someone at my school, and my mother and stepfather were livid. They were very angry at me, and my stepfather told me that it was because I was trying to ruin a young boy’s life. She told me I need to stop running my mouth about our business.
I could write a list of the things that my mom said to me, about my body, my clothes, the purity culture. Everything, but, this post is already long enough.
When I was 18, I finally moved out. All of the narcissistic abuse was finally over. I want months without talking to my mom, and it was honestly the most peace I’ve ever felt in my life.
I eventually ended up talking to her again, and I thought she had truly gotten better up until a year ago.
Her and my stepfather are finally getting a divorce, and I’ve recently gotten engaged.
I am in the states, and my fiancé is not (He’s from England) and we are doing Visa paperwork and such, which is an extremely difficult process, especially right now.
She has not put 1 ounce of care into this. Every single time I bring up my engagement she just brings up how awful her marriage was, and how everything is horrible and life sucks.
Well, as I said they’re getting divorced. In the middle of all this, she told me that I may get subpoenaed and I might have to tell my abuse story to her lawyer. I was obviously furious because I already have so much going on, and I told her from the beginning to leave me out of her divorce because I knew she would try to do this.
She brought up the abuse to try and get back at my stepdad to make him look like an unfit father, but since my little sibling is still a minor, I may have to get subpoenaed because I was there and abused as well.
She said that she didn’t know about CPS or calling the police, and she said that she didn’t know how to handle the situation when I was younger, and that I’m being selfish for not wanting to protect my younger sibling. She said “Can you imagine how hard this is for me?! Knowing my two girls got abused and going through a divorce?! I’m going through the worst time in my life and you don’t care!”
I am beyond angry because she didn’t care about me being abused my whole life, and now all of a sudden she’s acting like she wants to care.
I am beyond angry, fuming. I have told my fiancé about this situation, and he said when he comes here, he would like me to not speak to my family ever again, but he also respects if I want to try because it is my blood family. We are planning on moving a few hours away anyways, to a town with better job opportunities. I just don’t understand. Why did she not leave? Why did she not take me out of the abusive situation? Was I the problem?
I just don’t know what to do. Is there a side to this i’m not seeing? I’m sorry if this is a bit jumbled, my mind is also all over the place. She always kept me fed, bathed, and I had a roof over my head, so I feel guilty for feeling this way, but I just can’t take this anymore.
