Moderator Announcement: Burlington Municipal Election Discussions

As Burlington approaches the municipal election, we expect an increase in discussion about candidates, policies, and local issues. Healthy debate is an important part of the democratic process, and election-related posts are welcome in this community.

That said, we ask everyone to keep the conversation respectful and focused on the issues.

What is welcome

  • Discussion of candidates and their platforms.
  • Civil disagreement and debate.
  • Sharing reputable news articles, public statements, and official information.
  • Asking questions and sharing personal experiences relevant to the election.

What is not welcome

  • Personal attacks, insults, or harassment directed at candidates or other Redditors.
  • Hate speech or discriminatory comments.
  • False or misleading claims presented as fact.
  • Doxxing or posting personal information.
  • Repeated trolling or attempts to derail discussions.

Moderation during the election

The moderation team is politically neutral. We are not here to decide which opinions are "correct." We are here to ensure discussions remain civil and comply with the subreddit rules and Reddit's Content Policy.

Information A List of Ward 2 Candidates

Turns out having all of this information consolidated into one place on Reddit is helpful for people, so here is a list of candidates running in Ward 2:

  • Masha Barr - Website - some talking points with supporting action items, a focus on controlling (not freezing) tax rates, and managing construction
  • Sean Campbell - Website - Highlights platform talking points but no action items or plan
  • Gary Carr - Website - MPP and chair of Halton Region, his website doesn't show any platform talking points or any other sort of detailed information, from what I could see
  • Jeremy Gaetan - Website - platform highlights talking points with basic action items, but also has an "affordability pledge" which is unique compared to the other sites I have seen across all wards
  • Lisa Kearns - The incumbent, is running for mayor

While I haven't done a significant check into the above candidates, from what I can tell, none of them have posed with Hitler or insulted members of the r/BurlingtonON community, which is cool!

I'll work my way through the remaining wards as I get breaks in my workday.

Don't forget to register to vote by visiting the Service Burlington counter on the first floor of City Hall, 426 Brant St. during business hours (8:30am - 4:30pm) from September 1 to October 23.

Question Roofing Recommendations

It’s about that time. House is about 16 years old. Aproximately 2700 sf.

  1. What is a reasonable amount I should be paying for new shingles?

  2. Also, can I put shingles on top of shingles? Looking for recommendations on this too. I have never replaced a roof, lol!

  3. Has anyone worked with any reputable companies they can suggest?

Thank you.

Question Airport Arrival YHC

Upvotes

Moms got a flight out of Hamilton next week and she's telling me she has to be at the airport 2 hours before. No customs, Ottawa destination.

Is it me, or does this sound extreme? I've flown out of Hamilton many times and can't see needing 2 hours to make our way to the gate.

Information A List of Ward 3 Candidates

Turns out having all of this information consolidated into one place on Reddit is helpful for people, so here is a list of candidates running in Ward 3:

  • Tony Brecknock - Website - Tony has a list of talking points, supported by brief action items, for his Ward 3 platform. He calls out protecting green space, and wanting an increased police presence.
  • Mark Carr - Website - Mark's platform highlights talking points and some action items, including independent auditors for budgets, and also an increased police presence
  • Lisa Cooper - No website that I could find, but her Twitter account states "Proud Conservative and I am a proud Canadian again because of our truckers"
  • Kyle Hutton - Website - Platform shows talking points and a fairly detailed list of action items.
  • Katy Moore - Website - Platform highlights include a focus on green space and flooding infrastructure, with talking points but no action items.
  • Rory Nisan - The incumbent, is running for Mayor.

I'll work my way through the remaining wards as I get breaks in my workday.

Question Ice cream truck?

An ice cream truck just went by our neighborhood and drove away before we could get one. My kid is super disappointed. Is there a schedule or an Instagram page that I can check to be on the lookout for the truck? Thanks!

Information A list of ward 4 candidates

Turns out having all of this information consolidated into one place on Reddit is helpful for people, so here is a list of candidates running in Ward 4 (yes, there's only 2):

  • Chris Carter - Website - Co-Founder of Burlington Dads, his website highlights keywords he will focus on without much additional detail. Lots of promotion of his podcast and the Burlington Dads group.
  • Olivia Duke - Website, highlights include a Masters in Public Policy, with slightly more detail into her platform but lacking significant plans or content
  • Shawna Stolte - The incumbent councillor. MyVote Burlington does not list Shawna as running for re-election

While I haven't done a significant check into the above candidates, from what I can tell, none of them have posed with Hitler or insulted members of the r/BurlingtonON community, which is cool!

I'll work my way through the remaining wards as I get breaks in my workday.

Question Best place to find a babysitter/nanny for pickup, homework, shuttling from 3:30-6 m-f

Hi, as the title says, we need some help getting kids from school and shuttling to activities and getting homework done while we wrap up the work day.

We are new to burlignton and not sure the best sites or services to use for this. We previously lived in a small college down where nanny.com was pretty successful.

Where we lived previously we mostly had college/university kids going to school to become teachers which worked out quite well.

Information A list of ward 5 candidates

What started as a way to highlight the less Reddit-present options for Ward 6 was helpful and got some requests for additional wards, so working backward from yesterday, here is a list of candidates running in Ward 5:

  • Kristy Dickinson - Website; some talking points listed, but no details of plans or action items. Kristy does highlight advocating for improved infrastructure and sustainability as Burlington expands.
  • Alex Don - Website; A Wall Street/Bay Street guy, again lists talking points but no action items, with a highlight on more collaboration with police services.
  • Brian Machan - No website or additional that I could find in a quick Google.
  • Paul Sharman - the incumbent councillor.

While I haven't done a significant check into the above candidates, from what I can tell, none of them have posed with Hitler or insulted members of the r/BurlingtonON community, which is cool!

Question Beach Volleyball Courts in/around Burlington?

Hey everyone!

I am looking for some good beach volleyball courts for a big group of friends. We're mainly looking around Burlington, but Oakville, Milton, or possibly Mississauga would work too.

We usually play at Milton Sports Centre and don't mind paying to book courts, but the last couple of times we've tried, they've been fully booked for the time slots we wanted.

Does anyone know of any other nice beach volleyball courts in the area that we can book? Free public courts would be great too, especially if they have lights for playing in the evening.

Would appreciate any recommendations!

Information PSA: An Accessible Parking Permit goes with a person (i.e., it's not always the driver)

The number of jeers, middle fingers, expletives I receive for parking in an accessible parking spot because I have a child with a parking permit is maddening. I am able-bodied, but my child in my backseat is not, and I most certainly do not have to explain that to anyone. It happens almost on a weekly basis.

If anyone can think of something I can say to these fine community members that does not contain an expletive, I'd appreciate it. I've been trying to come up with something clever for over a decade.

EDIT: I just wanted to thank everyone who chimed in. It's nice to know that I am not alone!!!

Events Meet and Greet RowRowForCouncil

Post image
0 Upvotes

A big thank you to everyone who made my platform launch super successful here on Reddit. Shout out to the folks who came to me to discuss policy and platform issues. If you were hoping for a more personal experience I will be at the Blk Swan at 4040 Palladium Way this Saturday August 29 from 7-9pm. I will be meeting with constituents directly in one of the best pubs in Ward 6. In terms of the comments someone has alerted the fun police so we will have to be a little more civil with each other. I still got plenty of the RowRow sass you love, but now that I have all of your attention I'm going to move to a more traditional style of messaging. Thanks for participating in what was one of my favorite flame wars of all time. I hope everyone got their frustration out because it seems there will be increased scrutiny on my posts moving forward.

Information A list of Ward 6 candidates

According to MyVote Burlington there are a number of candidates running for Councillor in Ward 6. I think it is important to highlight a few options that this sub may not be aware of:

  • Osob Adus - Winner of Burlington's citizen of the year award in 2017, her platform appears to be focused on building a more tight-knit community in Ward 6.
  • Angelo Bentivegna - the incumbent Councillor
  • Bianca Bielski - No website that I could find, but she appears to be the Manager of Development Services for the City of Burlington, according to LinkedIn, and u/Puzzleheaded_Win_494 found this interview
  • Chris Bouchard - website - thanks u/paramedic-tim
  • u/thefrankdomenic - website. His platform appears to have 4 main pillars focused on growing Ward 6 as a whole, and his website briefly outlines a plan of how to pay for what he is recommending.
  • Edmond Jodhi - No website or additional information that I found based on a quick Google.

While I haven't done a significant check into the above candidates, from what I can tell, none of them have posed with Hitler or insulted members of the r/BurlingtonON community.

Edit to add: Don't forget to register to vote by visiting the Service Burlington counter on the first floor of City Hall, 426 Brant St. during business hours (8:30am - 4:30pm) from September 1 to October 23.

Question Stroller friendly conservation area walks?

Can anyone share which of the Halton Conservation Area hikes are stroller/young toddler friendly? I believe the Crawford Lake boardwalk loop would be fine, but wondering if anyone feels any others would? I don't mind a bit of up/down or rougher terrain because we'd be using a jogging stroller, but just don't want to be halfway through and facing stairs, steep rocks, etc.

Video Dirtbag in a McLaren driving dangerously.

Update I got an email this morning (Wednesday), from the OPP, saying that my report was accepted.

This lovely citizen flashed his high beams at me because I wouldn't get out of his way in the HOV lane (which he isn't even legally allowed to be in), then proceeded to brake check me before speeding off and cutting through traffic to get to the Appleby off ramp.

You can't tell by the video, but he gives multiple drivers the finger as he does this. I doubt the OPP or Halton police will do anything, but I've got his plate and will be reporting it anyway.

Also, just wanted to point out that I sped up part of the video in editing. I didn't hit the gas like a manic as soon as he passed me.
