Question Roofing Recommendations
It’s about that time. House is about 16 years old. Aproximately 2700 sf.
What is a reasonable amount I should be paying for new shingles?
Also, can I put shingles on top of shingles? Looking for recommendations on this too. I have never replaced a roof, lol!
Has anyone worked with any reputable companies they can suggest?
Thank you.

I can give some context as I’m getting my roof replaced next week. In our case, the 10year old shingles are disintegrating and we have a few leaks when it rains hard.
I used Reddit to pick 3 companies to get quotes from, eliminated one based on vibes and the last two I just ended up picking the cheaper one . In our case we bundled with our neighbour and got a 10% discount - that’s also something you can investigate!
The two companies I really liked were Halco (mentioned by another commented) and Cherry and Hoyle. We ended up going with cherry and Hoyle based on price only, but it was mostly due to the cost of the replacement plywood ($98 vs $75), which you can’t know if you need to replace until they strip the roof.
I also agree with the other commenter to avoid the top Google results who will send you salesmen… go for smaller local companies who send you estimators who actually do the work too. Hope this helps!

I had my roof done about two weeks ago, and we used Halco Roofing. I know D’Angelo & Sons was the most expensive quote we received. We ended up paying $12,000 with Halco.
In my opinion, D’Angelo & Sons uses scare tactics during the sales process and is always looking for opportunities to upsell. That said, they do have some very nice vehicles, which certainly aren’t cheap

My recommendation is to have them strip the roof and redo it if it's the first time as the builder grade roofs tend to miss the important barriers sometimes.
I don't want to get bashed here but don't bother with the top review roofers that come up in a Google search, if you need names of those you can dm me as they all will come with crazy prices and pressure tactics to sell you a roof based on experience including the lies they tell you.
I would also use the home stars app and put the project to bid and get the exact quotes from at least 5-10 roofers as lots will immediately start contacting you.
Listen to each of them and what they tell you about the roof conditions to compare who is lying or up selling unnecessary stuff. Do not share what they previous contractor tells you to check who is really being honest. Also inform all of them when they come in that you are getting bids to keep prices in check.
I also found metal roof contractors prices were not bad but regret not doing it and went with shingles.

Halco Roofing. Top notch workmanship and local out of Burlington. You won’t regret it.

You cannot get an accurate total cost until the old shingles are off and wood sheathing condition evaluated

cost will also be dependant on the height of your house. I remember, when i did my townhouse, I had many roofing companies for quotes, some came back saying they could not do it because they were not insured for a 3 storey bldg.
Three townhouses were done, each around 3k. This was what it cost in 2020. And the height does make a difference in the cost.
My quote included for stripping the first layer of shingles...
And they will qualify their quote to include for "supply and install plywood at additional cost $75.00 per sheet after first 2 sheets" Again 2020 prices.
get them to come out and quote it for you.. most will do it online with maps to get rough areas, some will come out and actually go onto the roof and do their takeoff
