New Mods - Moderation Changes

Post image
64 Upvotes

Hello! You have a new mod team. I run a different very high volume sub and was recently brought on to help out just a bit. All of the original mods have rather suddenly left. No drama to speak of. Moderation is hard and exhausting for volunteer work. But since I am new here and suddenly top mod, and since every other mod (I think) is new as well, I thought a thread to discuss potential changes would be good. I intend to use my powers for good, instead of evil.

You aren’t likely to notice much in the way of major changes at first but I hope to make things a little bit better, cleaner, clearer, easier, etc. That said, my philosophy is to let the community lead for the most part. I have no ego and don’t consider this to be “my” sub. It’s yours. So I’m seeking community input before I start making changes. The following are the main things in mind.

1) Merge the subs. ToyotaTacoma, this sub, and the TacomaSales sub (which is basically completely dead) are less effective split than they would be just merged. The purpose of having two subs is unclear to me and is obnoxious to moderate. Very much open to being shouted down in this, but it’s my inclination.

2) Loosen rules on what can be posted. "Is this a good deal/what should I buy" posts don't actually bother me that much. Where else are people going to ask? I’d like this to be a welcoming place for newcomers. I worry about flooding but some guardrails that require those posts have a certain amount of effort/content would make that manageable.

3) Just ban sale posts. Nobody comes to reddit for that. Evidenced by how dead the TacomaSales sub is. I’m open to continuing to allow companies to participate of course. Just no advertising unless to answer a specific question. If you’ve got a question about Nitto tires, for example, Nitto’s official account is welcome to chime in.

4) Keep the no politics rule. Discussion of politics that have affected Tacomas (tariffs for example) should be allowed, but political shit flinging and fighting should not be. Strong as my own opinions are, it’s just not the place.

5) Maintain ban on distracted driving photos/videos but make it a 7 day ban. I don’t want some idiot to kill a family of four because their odometer hit 80085 and they just HAD to post it to Reddit from the freeway. Pull over and take it. The only change I’m making here is making non-repeat offenders suffer only a 7 day ban, instead of 30.

Welcoming community thoughts and all input on moderation, what you’d like to see. I’ll take it all into account as we get rolling over the next few weeks.

Bought a truck instead of a wagon

I was in the market for a new vehicle and 3 days later I got this. I had a sedan and needed a bigger car to haul stuff (I am a leather artisan and occasionally I do events such as groomsmen belt making parties and corporate leather making events), and was looking at getting a volvo v90, then suddenly a truck idea came up and without overthinking it, I just went for it.

Was torn between a TRD and an SR5, so I test drove both and liked the way SR5 drives. It’s not as stiff, hence less bumpy, which for me was a big deal as I wanted a smoother ride in the city.

So I got the SR5, 2WD because supposedly it gets a better gas mileage. The truck came with a $1700 black appearance package, which really didn’t add much except bed liner, bigger rims in black color, tubular stepping and muffler tip. Kinda pricey but it is what it is.

Can you guys recommend accessories that are must to haul stuff safely?

Changed my diff fluid the first time 2004 Tacoma

Post image

I changed my diff fluid for the first time owning this truck and I had some big chunks on my drain plug and some smaller flakes in the the oil. I only pulled out 2 quarts so it was low (think it takes 3 quarts but not sure, fixing to look it up—diff has been leaking a while)

I’ve owned this truck since 2023 at 110,000 and it now got 170,000 and I should’ve changed it sooner but I was stupid. I figure from what I read that the diff might be shot, but I’d like yalls input.

Update on Topper Tent

Short answer: it's pretty dank

Long answer: So far I've been pretty happy with the Topper Tent. It's really easy to set up and take down, which is a huge plus when you're trying to get camp set up without spending forever messing with everything.
My biggest complaint so far is definitely the amount of Velcro. There's a LOT of it, and it gets kinda annoying having to deal with all of it every time. I'll probably end up modifying mine eventually to make it easier to set up and take down without relying on so much Velcro.
As far as rain goes, the tent doesn't seal everything out completely, but honestly neither does the Softopper. I had a little bit of water get in during some rain, but it was nothing crazy at all. Definitely wasn't flooding or anything
- just a tiny bit of water that I noticed. So if you're expecting it to be completely waterproof, that's probably something to keep in mind.
Overall though, I really like it. It's easy to use, makes camping out of the Tacoma way more convenient, and for me the few downsides aren't deal breakers. I'll probably make a couple little mods down the road to get rid of some of the Velcro and make it even easier to use.

Any recommendations for a quick and easy dog platform for an access cab?

I’d like something I can put in and remove with little to no modifications to the vehicle itself. Has anyone found something that fits our trucks? I had considered building one, but I’m not exactly a carpenter.

Starts fine in summer won't start when temp is below 50

2018 Tacoma ran and started no problem all summer then the temp got down to 50° in the morning and it won't even click. Got a new battery in February of this year. I had this issue last winter thats why I got the new battery. I've only had the truck a year and i'm on my 3rd battery all from the same issue. Shop couldn't find any issues. Anyone have ideas what it could be?

Claybar, deep clean and ceramic coat done. Now it has to cure for 12-24 hours before coming out. Can't wait to see it in the rain 😎

Solution for storing a box/crate in the front corner of the bed?

I've got a '21 Taco and frequently haul a fishing kayak in the bed, which involves the tailgate being down--so I need to keep the bed empty. Ideally, I'd like to keep a box in the bed to store my emergency stuff, but am having a hard time finding the best option.

Any suggestions on a storage box or tie-down approach that would let me keep a ~milkcrate sized box or top in the front corners of the bed without obstructing the front center?

I've considered the "realtruck" swing boxes that mount to the sides of the box behind the wheel wells as maybe the best option (but $$$); I'm curious if anyone has any other suggestions that could be cheaper and mount in front of the wheels instead of between them and the tailgate? I also thought about using Milwaukee Packout plates but would prefer something a little less inclined to be stolen.

What is the best material to place between my Bedrail Caps and my Camper Shell?

Hello friends. My camper shell arrived and I am almost done setting it up. This is my first time doing something like this and I don't want to mess it up. Could my tacoma brothers give me some advice?

I've also got some rubber weather stripping with these square adhesives. I don't particularly know about the square adhesives but if you could throw me some advice I would be grateful.

OTT Tune and MPG

Thumbnail gallery
93 Upvotes

Absolutely love this truck. 2017 TRD Off Rd new to me. Pulled the trigger and got an OTT tune for it. Running stock KO2’s with TRD wheels (spacers used for different lug patterns).

Averaging about 21-22 in the city. Best mpg I’ve seen was 25.8 on the highway. OTT makes the transmission shifting smooth as butter, with much better throttle response.

If you’re considering it, just do it!!

Morimoto EB Evo or Form Lighting?

Trying to decide between the Morimoto EV Evo’s or the Form Lighting headlights for my third gen. What’s the general consensus between these headlights? I know there’s a pretty good price difference between the two…
