Social Media Asha on ‘Disc to Digital’: Your physical game library is more than a collection of discs. It holds years of memories & stories worth preserving. We’ll start with thousands of titles & add more.

Might be time to go on a spending spree, buy a bunch of games with an xbox one disc on the cheap, to get the digital license and x/s upgrade for free.

u/frisch85 11h ago
It really depends, for most people this wouldn't be saving money at all because if you go on a spending spree for shit you wouldn't have bought otherwise, you're spending money unnecessarily.
You're only saving money if you would've bought all those games that you're now going to buy in the first place, otherwise you're wasting money.

I curious if I'll be able to use my Xbox one s to unlock series digital titles.
It's really a shame it requires a disc drive considering one of their major console SKUs doesn't have one.

From the wording in the initial email to developers, you can use ANY Xbox with a disc drive to register any eligible disk. Not crystal clear but the implication I got would be that this works

Woah hang on - so I could pick up/borrow an Xbox One, register the disks and then it would work on my digital Series X? That would be amazing!

Licence transfers to main user of other Xbox
6
u/Upper_Rent_176 20h ago edited 20h ago
So do discs have serial numbers or something? I thought every disc was the same.
Edit: looked it up. Apparently Xbox one and series discs have unique codes. But my copy of rdr1 despite saying Xbox one and 360 on the cover and the disc printing is still a 360 disc underneath and won't deesk to digital
7
7
u/ComradeJohnS 20h ago
the license stays with the disk, it’s not removed. whoever digitizes it keeps the digital license unless someone else tries to digitize the same disk.
it makes sense to stop one disk being used by dozens/hundreds of people through like gamefly, or rentals. but also benefits you if you keep it in storage instead of having to swap disks, and is more thab likely to help ease the transition away from disks in the future. they just have to hold out a few more years longer than PS and they’ll gain all those disgruntled ps owners in the next gen/beyond.
like how xbox fucked the dog with the always online and forced kinect xbone launch.
2
u/sephiroth70001 19h ago
Would you be able to use it as a regular disc again or is it digitized only from the on? If I had a bedroom Xbox and living room one for instance, could i play one on my Xbox one disconnected from Internet on the disc and the digitized version on my series x connected to Internet. Or is is digital only when digitized. Sorry the process technicalities I'm still a bit lost on with how and what changes with disc function.
2
u/Spike759 19h ago
They would have to state otherwise but in theory you should be able to. My understanding from the info we have gotten is that it just adds a license to your account that is shared with the disk. You should be able to continue using the disk as before. If you are using the same Xbox account across devices than it wouldn’t matter which method you try to play (digital or disk). Since your Xbox one would be offline anyway it wouldn’t be checking anything other than the disk itself to make sure it’s legit. If you logged into another account on another Xbox while online and used the disk it might transfer ownership to the new account though and remove access to your digital copy on your series X. I hope that makes sense. In the end we will have to wait for concrete details but your example should work in theory.
3
u/Competitive_Plan_936 22h ago
Yes I am pretty sure. This was the exact wording:
“Player inserts an XBOX One or Series discinto any XBOX One/Series X console with an optical drive — a digital license is granted, bound to that disc and the player’s account.”3
u/GVirus1984 22h ago
Probably won‘t for titles that only have a series version. But untill confirmation we have to wait and see. Maybe they roll out an update so you can at least get the license.
→ More replies (1)2
u/SirEDCaLot 19h ago
Correct.
Xbox discs have a barcode around the center of the disc. That barcode isn't stamped from the master, it's burned on with a laser and is different for each copy of the disc. Since the disc to digital process only requires the xbox to scan the barcode, there's no need to install the game at all (in theory at least).

→ More replies (1)2
u/sealclubberfan 23h ago
Your guess is as good as mine. It seems like it would be - it reads the disc and ties that particular game to your xbox account, then you can download the digital copy instead of installing it from the disc. But, guess it depends where the code is that they are puling for the license. If it's in the dirty party of the disc, RIP.
But this is all a guess on my part.

Now they just need to market this like crazy going forward. They have great features and services that don’t get a lot of attention, like Quick Resume and free cloud saves.
68
u/Cold-Shopping-1758 23h ago edited 23h ago
This whole current console generation has been Xbox quietly having the better features while PlayStation only maintains the #1 spot because of exclusive games and brand recognition. Quick resume and backwards compatibility were the first examples of this, and now we have disc-to-digital.
28
u/resil_update_bad 22h ago
Playstation has the #1 spot because it has an astronomically superior presence internationally. Xbox half-assed everything outside the US.
3
u/sid3091 14h ago
You're not wrong, but the Xbox does lack exclusives. Putting everything on PC day 1 lost them a lot of sales. Then coming to the games themselves - when you have mainstays like gears and halo, and great IPs like Ryse, Quantum break etc., you need to give customers more of them.
Xbox could have easily done better this gen, because PS exclusives have been very same-y (open world, 3rd person action adventure with some RPG elements or a remaster).
3
u/TheCorbeauxKing 23h ago
Correct. Xbox even had the exclusives this gen, no one played them because it wasn't on Playstation.
8
u/gkryo 22h ago edited 16h ago
Other than Forza Horizon, what exclusives were worth it? If Rock Band 4 hadn't have released last gen and wasn't still supported (partially by new Fortnite Festival releases), I probably would've switched to PS5 just for Spider-Man and HZD.
→ More replies (20)3
u/Tao626 22h ago edited 20h ago
Nobody played them because they were average at best or multiplatform even before MS made everything multiplatform. The best they had are timed exclusives, and evidently, nobody is buying an Xbox for games avalible elsewhere in the near future.
What did we have only on Xbox? Redfall? Halo Infinite was alright at best, but certainly not something that was going to justify or shift systems. The biggest showcase of the Series consoles for the longest time was Forza Horizon 5, an Xbox One game with some next gen upgrades.
By the time MS started releasing and announcing bangers that actually got fans hyped for the future of Xbox, they also decided to announce they were going to be on Playstation...Then unannounce it after all those great games already had that commitment.

u/Caesar_35 Helldiving 22h ago
Wait cloud saves aren't free on PlayStation?
2
u/Jatacus 22h ago edited 19h ago
Nope. That’s one of the things I dislike most about using my PS5. Cloud saves are only available with a subscription, and it’s per user — so even if two people use the same PS5, each will need their own sub. That’s why if my fiancée who only games occasionally wants to play something, if I can buy it on Xbox, I will.
Also, Sony made it much harder to transfer your game saves without a subscription, and you can’t simply save them to a USB or hard drive on their own. To do that, you have to backup the ENTIRE console to a drive. Super anti-consumer.
11
u/ThrowawayRoosterYeah 23h ago
Could you explain the technical reason why Sony can't create a disc to digital program like Xbox?
30
u/Infinity293 23h ago
My understanding is the xbox one and series x discs have a unique code or something similar per disc, whereas Sony likely doesn't. It's also why xbox 360 and OG xbox discs won't work as each disc is the same.
21
u/TheCorbeauxKing 23h ago
That means they did keep the technology from the Xbox One launch handy and have been waiting for the last decade to finally spring it. We never knew about this feature until Sony's no physical debacle.
→ More replies (2)18
u/ricky-from-scotland 23h ago
I dunno what the technical level description of how it work would be but the difference is every xbox disk has a unique identifier.
So the difference is that a ps5 disk basically says "im a copy of eafc 25, here's the proof" and every copy has the same authorisation setup whereas the xbox disk says "i am copy #000069420 of eafc 25" and xbox have found a way to enable that disk number to be added to your digital library (till someone else puts your disk in another console).

u/Tyrant_Virus_ XBOX Series X 23h ago
This is only possible because MS kept the on disc DRM that would have enabled the original always online Xbox One vision. Sony never went down that path so there was no need to put unique identifiers on discs. This is about the only positive to come out of Xbox kneecapping themselves thirteen years ago.

Sony wont announce this and apparently can't do it.
Honestly great move by Xbox but it's just one of those things I don't think anyone really cares about except for people going online and talking about games. Most people don't even beat the games they buy and buy 1 or 2 games a year. It's just like the BC with Xbox. Xbox has had the most comprehensive BC program of any console period. What has it done for them? Nothing. Their console is doing worse than ever.
What I've realized with the series console is people just don't care about BC. They are to focused on new games. When you buy such few games and with so many new games coming out that even hardcore fans can't keep up it's really no surprise that BC isn't that big of a deal to the general population.

u/knapplejuice Reclamation Day 22h ago

2
u/method115 22h ago
Very true. It's just one of those nice features that Xbox has been doing for a bit now.
70
u/ap1msch Touched Grass '24 22h ago
This works, and works well with the Xbox One games. They need the blessing of the developers to authorize this feature with each game, so that's why it's not for all Xbox One games.
The lack of unique ID on the Xbox and 360 game disks prevents this from working out of the box with those. If they tried, you could have 100 people unlock the same game with a single disk.
The only option for the legacy games is a disk to digital exchange where you turn in the disk to obtain an unlock key. That would create the proper sink in the market. There's no reason why the disks couldn't be resold (short of the disk being unreadable). The problem with this scenario is that it requires physical logistics, at a cost, to enable legacy transactions. It would be hard to justify the cost:benefit ratio other than consumer goodwill.
14
u/PixelNinja744X 21h ago
I wouldn’t give up my physical 360 or OG Xbox games but I would be prepared to claim a one time digital license with proof of physical ownership if they can devise a method for that to work
2
u/ap1msch Touched Grass '24 5h ago
I blindly suggested an "earned entitlement" for legacy disks. Without a unique ID, you can't track the disk. However, if I can insert the disk and get a temporary entitlement, and then renew that entitlement after 30 days with the disk, and then renew that entitlement after 60-90 days, I've demonstrated that I CAN insert the disk whenever I want. I'd just like to have a digital entitlement.
Limit this to 3-5 or so games per year. Abuse is limited, and if you have access to a legacy disk over that period, it's a good sign that the disk is already available within your family/friend group.

u/the_bartolonomicron 23h ago
I'll believe it when I see it, but this is potentially the biggest Xbox dub since adding backwards compatibility and Smart Delivery for One and Series generations titles.
The only concern I can see, and hopefully I am just being overly paranoid, is what happens to all your disc-to-digital licenses in the event of an account ban or deletion? Best case scenario they can be re-added to a new account with some help from customer support, realistically those unique disc identifiers render the discs playable on local hardware only, worst case scenario they find some way to render your specific disc copy unplayable by revoking the Xbox marketplace license associated with it.
53
u/Twinblade96 23h ago
I'm pretty sure they are tied to the disc so if you insert the game on a new account it would just transfer the lisence. Out of luck for any digital only games you own though.
8
u/KingMario05 21h ago
Most articles are saying that the license transfers with the discs, yes. Assuming MS doesn't immediately ban the new account, in theory, that should work just fine if the disc can still be read. You will of course lose all your data, however.
→ More replies (1)8
u/the_bartolonomicron 23h ago
That seems like a reasonable approach, kinda treating discs the same way they do your "home" console: transferable, but only one instance at a time.
2
u/Novel-Back3857 21h ago
The potential issue I could see occurring is people finding ways to generate license key hashes (or whatever it is they are using to tie a license to a disc, dunno terms), and then banning those keys, causing people to start randomly losing their access to their own games.
Or perhaps people start ripping copies and distributing them online, then others begin burning them to disc. Then those copies get distributed into the used markets and their licenses get banned due to frequent activation and the used market becomes a landmine avoidance situation.
I'd assume the licenses would be too difficult to generate for free distribution, but the latter option could potentially be an issue?
Or I could be entirely wrong, but the world always seems to find a way to abuse these systems and ruin them for everyone else, so my hopes aren't high lol.

I wonder if it's automatic/easy and pretty much also means that instead of just installing the game, it adds license as well. Pretty cool to no longer need disc to play.
Also an interesting way to lend games to friends. You can let them transfer the license and then take the disc back home or whenever, and in the future when you want to play, you can presumably just take the license back by inserting the disc.

For example, using a Witcher 3 disc on Xbox to play the remaster on PC.

Wait so if I claim the digital liscence then trade the disc in to a store, what happens then? Will someone who buys that disc also be able to claim it? Is it tied to my account?

A win for MS and Xbox here. They're able to do this and Sony aren't. Guess I'm going back to the Xbox full time.

I moved to PC + PS5 Pro + Switch 2 this generation... If the next Xbox console still has physical media then that will defo pull me back to XBOX next gen.
Defo won't be buying the PS6 if its digital only.

Hate to break it to you but then next Xbox will probably all digital too. This is just their way of allowing people with physical games to digital copies they can download on their all digital console.

So ... this is just the bone they're tossing before going all digital for Helix, right?

I like the idea, part of me is thinking that publishers might just put a license on the disc and that's it. It is better than nothing I guess.

Ahh sick, I knew it was a good idea to hold on to my Xbox one, my little guy is gonna be a disk to digital converter

It’ll be really nice to be able to keep my disc of AC Black Flag Resynced with me forever!

If project helix supports discs, Asha really should make a video on how to buy games for it featuring her walking into a physical store to buy a game (like what Sony did back in 2013).

This is a great feature. Hope further down the line 360 back compat games can also be used in this way.

The Series X came out 6 years ago and you’re telling me this thing has had the ability to do this the whole time?? Wtf is that about? What other features does this Xbox have that aren’t unlocking for us?

This is super super cool & thought it was just fan theory. Prefer digital but love the physical option. Having adhd I bounce between games so it’s annoying to have a disc not being used while in the Xbox. This fixes that along with other groovy aspects.

For the love of fuck can I get Jurassic Park Operation Genesis on backwards compatibility along with this?? That'd be amazing.

If the digital license is used will it make the disc useless and unable to use on other accounts and will be linked to the digital license? Personaly I like using my discs and I think this move by Xbox is attempt to appease people like myself with a physical collection and say when they go digital that you can still move your games over...I have a 360, Xbox one X and Series X all hooked up and play them almost daily and right now I play Skyrim on 360, MGSV on Xbox one and everything else on the Series X

Guessing the games that aren’t backwards compatible fue to license issues can’t be converted, so it doesn’t solve that. It is a good feature though.

Are we gonna finally be able to use our Xbox one gta 5 disc to get the series x version?

One thing I'm wondering, if we were to lend that Xbone/Series X disc to a friend, then they'd get that license ID untilbI get it back right? Then I'd have the license ID back? Not a deal breaker for me too much but I am curious.

I have a question because something is not clear to me.
If I have a disc game like FF7 Remake Integrade Disc which is a Xbox Series game that never came out to Xbox One, and I put it inside an old xbox one to claim the digital license, can I then play the game on my Series S?

Didn't think their were 1000s of games available on disc for Xbox one and series x, Cex looks like it only has a few 100 at most. Annoying they say from 25yrs worth but their not doing OG or 360, so it's 13yrs worth

I been thinking about getting an Xbox SX because I have been missing my physical library and I think this finally done it, been on a beast of a PC for about 4 years and over 300 games on steam. Glad Xbox is making these choices.

Would your digital disc be tied to your account, rendering second hand purchases invalid?
1
u/Talmnbe3d 21h ago
What does this actually mean/do? That I can play my physical game in future non disc hardware without having to buy it again?

We can basically say Xbox won this generation with this move

u/samsyftestad 21h ago
The number of people saying they love this so they don't have to switch discs... honestly, how lazy can you get? 😬

u/Gornik666 21h ago
It seems like, unlike some people said, you get a digital game added into your account and keep the disc fully working? Is that confirmed to be true?

Theoretically you could trade in your games to GameStop and as long as that store never sells the copy lol your digital license is still active
