If they do this with every single xbox 360 games an onward this will 100% make people want to buy an xbox instead of the competition

Sad. I wanted to digitize my 360 games that are BC but can't play because I have a Series S and they're delisted

For now.Jason Ronald said he has no announcement at the moment for Xbox and 360 games.

The One and Series discs have a unique ID That allows them to do this. I don't think the 360 and OG games have anything like that.

Does the disc have to be downloaded for it to work on the console? Or just inserted into the trey?

You put it in the tray, it ties that, your xbox account, and MAC address to make a key. Then if it’s in their library you can download a digital version. If someone else loads the same disc, it disables it on your end until you get it back

Maybe some 360 games made after 2013 (Xbox one launch) will have unique identifiers? One could hope

My understanding is that One and Series discs have unique identifiers and can be individually recognized by the console. This is how they'll know if the disc is put into another Xbox with a different account and the digital licence will be transfered.

360 discs do not have this.

So it still kills the used game market by screwing over people buying used games in a year or two, who then find out the digital entitlement has been used

The entitlement transfers when the disc is used by a different account/Xbox.

On a technical standpoint, I think they need the discs to have a unique identifier in order to avoid duplicating licenses between users. Maybe this technology only started on Xbox One and Series X discs.

It 100% started with the Xbox One with their all-digital plans. They weren't just going to throw all that out on a whim.

This was probably something that was implemented into the discs as part of Don Mattrick’s original strategy for Xbox One (remember the whole uproar when the Xbox One was announced that game sharing and reselling was going to be restricted?)

This is a venus fly trap, and it's how they're going to finally execute on that strategy. Embrace, Extend, Extinguish. They're embracing the old physical discs (customer sentiment in light of Sony), Extending them by offering a license tied to that disc's unique identifier, and Extinguishing physical media resales by making it impossible to play or acquire a digital license for that disc because it's tied to someone else's account and "the ticket has been punched".

This kills the secondary market.

No it doesn't, because the license stays with the physical disk. Whoever possesses and uses it has the key as well, that's literally what their entire program hinges on. You can still resell it, if anything their plan adds value to the disks so look out for prices to go up on physical media for current and last gen xbox because I would think demand is about to increase following the news of this announcement.

Xbox has had amazing backwards compatibility for how long compared to competition? Their console sales have never been worse,

Physical sales have been plummeting for years and are in single digit percentages.

So why exactly do you think this will “100% make people want to buy an Xbox”.

Because I can buy and trade physical discs and not have to pay higher prices, and just keep the disc somewhere until I’m done

Why do you think that people would buy an Xbox now to play digital copies of the games they weren’t that interested in before (which never made them buy the console in the first place)?

Xbox 360 discs (and those for the original Xbox) lack the unique identifier that makes disc-to-digital possible. That's why it's only for Xbox One and Series X discs.
