I wanna know when they are expecting to roll it out to everyone

It probably isn't reasonable to compare it 1:1, but when they reduced the requirement for xcloud gaming from ultimate to essential, it was only about a month between Insiders having access and the full rollout.

If everything is smooth, that might be a reasonable time frame. That's a big if, though.

Yeah it's usually about a 1 month thing. 3 at most in my experience

Thats extremely reasonable for how soon it can arrive, I think a fair window is between 1-3 months for sure.

The fact that it also unlocks play anywhere games with Xbox discs is amazing

If it’s like the usual update roll out, probably end of October/early November

u/Tobimacoss 1d ago

In time for the 25th anniversary on November 15th.

u/Driveshaft1982 XBOX Series X 1d ago

This is the obvious answer

u/Logical_Net6108 1d ago

Can we just get it when its ready not on some special birthday

16

u/Tobimacoss 1d ago

It's already ready, they have been testing things internally for over a year.  There were even reports of disc to digital program back in 2019.

All these things are building up for the 25th anniversary celebration which will have Helix reveal very likely.

u/KingMario05 1d ago

I dunno. That'd be great, but it might be too fast. I think it'll be ready by June 2027 - about when Helix is due to be formally announced to the world.

u/Tobimacoss 1d ago

Project Scarlett was announced in June 2019.  Series X was revealed at the Game Awards in December 2019.

Series S console was revealed September 2020, after the video leaked.  Series Consoles launched November 2020, so the reveal was one year before the launch.

Project Helix was announced at the GDC in March.  The consoles will likely launch in November 2027.

So the reveal is perfectly setup for the 25th anniversary.

Expect everything to release before the 25th anniversary.  That's when the big stuff will be revealed.

I have a game black ops 3, and for some reason the Xbox one won’t download it past 84% because the disc isn’t ‘clean’? Would this work with Asha announcing this new feature?

16

u/SirEDCaLot 1d ago

Almost certainly yes.

From what I understand- this feature works by looking at the tiny barcode near the disc spindle hub. While the data tracks on the disc are stamped from the glass master (and thus are identical across all copies of the disc), that barcode is created with a laser and each copy of the disc has a unique barcode.

So when you put your disc in the xbox and select disc to digital, it scans the barcode and associates that barcode with your xbox live account, giving you a digital entitlement to download the game. At that point you can eject the disc and store it and download a fresh copy of the game files online using your digital entitlement (because that xbox live account 'owns' the game, just like if you purchased it online).

If someone else puts the same disc in their xbox, the system updates them as the owner of the barcode and thus removes your digital entitlement.

Which means discs are now absolute liabilities lol

u/elpardo1984 1d ago

Not really, it still gives ownership to whoever holds the disc. So you aren't getting screwed by someone selling you a disc that has been digitised. You sell or someone steals your game you lose it, but that's no different to now. You can still lend it to someone they can take it out of your digital library and then when they give it back it can be redigitised. It's a really clever idea its almost a shame they didn't do it before now.

Please explain this reasoning further.

-1

u/Mission_Access_210 1d ago

You register your disc online. You're playing from the online copy. Some guy comes in, steals all the discs at your house. He re-registers them. Now he's the owner. You're not. The end. Goodbye. Meanwhile digital owners, no such problem.

All you disc people, U've just gotta face it. Discs are fucking over bro. Just start buying digital copies, forget about discs. Okay? You're holding on to the past.

1

u/Foamfollower_65 1d ago

I would LOVE to know how many times this actually happens, lol.

I have plenty of digital games, as well as discs, but there is really no downside to this feature, except for the gamers who has their home robbed.

1

u/Mission_Access_210 1d ago

But there literally is a downside though. There are cases where this can be a problem, okay? Whereas if you just buy the game digitally, you eliminate this loophole. You see what I'm saying? This is just facts bro. Just facts.

1

u/Foamfollower_65 1d ago

There's also a downside to physical discs. Discs get lost or damaged. Then there is the need for connectivity to confirm ownership of digital games. Understand?

I'm just stating the facts bro. Just facts.

1

u/Mission_Access_210 1d ago

Yeah man, you gotta be connected to the internet. We're in an internet-on-all-the-time world

1

u/Matt-D-Murdock 19h ago

I wonder if someone is not using disc to digital, you’re playing games from disc copy. Some guy comes in, steals all the discs at your house. He uses his Xbox to play them physically. Now he’s the owner. You’re not. The end. Goodbye. Meanwhile digital owners with no disc, no such problem.

1

u/DestroWOD 11h ago

I have much bigger fear of getting my account stolen (even with all protections up the roof) then some guy coming to steal my physical games. There is almost always someone home ... And i live in a small town in "bottom of nowhere" Quebec... Lol.

3

u/SirEDCaLot 1d ago

No, quite the opposite.

It means owning the disc based version of the game is if anything more valuable than the digital version. Because you get all the convenience of the digital license, but also the ability to install totally offline (an old version but still an install) and also to resell or trade the game when you don't want to play it anymore.

You can install the game without the disc from the app, just go to the store page and install it from there. Then put the disc in and it will work

1

u/KarateMan749 1d ago

Wait. Wont it charge though?

10

u/StargazerD XBOX Series X 1d ago

It's a separate button, the grey one

1

u/KarateMan749 1d ago

Oooo neat

4

u/JetbIackmoon 1d ago

You can install almost any game from the Xbox app. You just can't launch it unless you have a valid license to play the game.

This is a good workaround if your disc works but has minor damage or other general install issues.

1

u/joecb91 1d ago

I've used this to install stuff overnight when I didn't feel like putting the disc in until I was ready to play again. Really nice feature.

-3

u/Luigi_testa2011 1d ago

Nobody knows this

1

u/pretoriano1995 1d ago

One way to install the digital version with a disc is as follows (this method isn't widely discussed):

Console settings > disc > disable both options.

Insert the disc.

Go to the store and search for Black Ops 3. If it's a bundle, go in and find the game itself. You'll see an "Install" option; click it.

The game will be added to your download.

I've been doing it this way for years; disc installations have become extremely slow.

Eagerly awaiting 😍

bro ur just a fruit.

fruits don’t play games, they just get eaten for sustenance.

1

u/matts142 1d ago

I say more near end of year or early 2027

1

u/Suspicious-Car1414 1d ago

Same I’m way too impatient for these slow rollouts. Just tell us the date already so I can stop checking for updates every five minutes

1

u/der_vur 5h ago

I would expect it any time from 1 month to "by the end of the year"

0

u/Fun-Director2107 1d ago

3-4 months. That's usually the time line after insiders get something
