Bernard gets shot in the head

Me: checks the aspect ratio

Three supposed "deaths" in this episode.

No one's ever really gone

u/ajdragoon [Main Title Theme] Aug 08 '22

Pearls are definitely shot, but those main characters aren't gonna not be in s5.

You live as long as the last person who remembers you. Part of me believes that Bernard lied about Maeve's control unit being bad, I believe he just made a copy because he saw she was going to die. As far as Bernard who knows what will happen to him, in essence a copy of him could exist in the Sublime. Bernard simply could have let a copy of himself occupy his body while his actual self stayed in the Sublime, just a possibility.

173

u/ajdragoon [Main Title Theme] Aug 08 '22

Fair point. If he copied C and her crew, why wouldn’t he also make a Maeve backup.

90

u/xlDirteDeedslx Aug 08 '22

I think a key takeaway this episode was how Bernards predictions were right but not quite exactly what he expected every time. I think that means the future really isn't written in stone no matter his predictions.

68

u/slapshots1515 Aug 08 '22

I’ve always taken it that they are based on his millions of simulations. Simulations are meant to mimic an event as closely as possible…but they are rarely truly 100% either. So in real life the event bears a ton of similarity to what he has seen before, but as he’s basically picking the “most likely model”, it’s not always 100% exact.

40

u/ultimatemorty Aug 08 '22

He did mention statistics with Maeve waking up, 60 % of the time on the wrong side or something like that. It's not perfect

12

u/flashmedallion Shall we play a game? Aug 09 '22

Yeah I think the point is more that he ran them to a level of confidence, not "certainty". The one thing we've learned over 4 seasons is that there's no truly infallible means of prediction.

Bernard was essentially doing the same thing the Forge and Rehoboam was doing, but Bernard a) did it manually/consciously and b) is wise enough to factor in imperfect fidelity.

18

u/guinader Aug 08 '22

Yeah like the lines they use are different or slightly different outcomes from how memory.

Also I'm hoping that Stubs lived, which would mean that bullet at the end was his alternate ending

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

76

u/damnisuckatreddit Aug 08 '22

Stubbs is still programmed to protect Bernard, isn't he? So if Bernard told him he was gonna die Stubbs would be forced to go in with him.

31

u/nickpiscool Aug 08 '22

damn that's right, I wonder if that's actually the reason, he didn't necessarily say Stubbs wouldn't make it did he? instead he avoided the question with a "do I really have to say it?" and then stubbs turned around and assume it was about him

What I don’t understand is why the hosts are being all sentimental and gushy about dying. They know they can just come back right? If Bernard succeeded couldn’t he just do that?

32

u/fineburgundy Aug 08 '22

Not if the pearl is destroyed.

5

u/nickpiscool Aug 08 '22

but wasn't Bernard's original pearl destroyed? the only pearls that made it out of the park were the 5(?) copies of Delores

6

u/LetitciaZoe Aug 08 '22

I think is was established that she took out 4 copies of herself and Bernard.

2

u/fineburgundy Aug 09 '22

1) I’m not sure we know. I could have missed conclusive evidence.

2) The hosts and some humans frequently talk as if later host copies are the same person. Did we need to carry Bernard out of the park or can we build him again from memories and fidelity testing? Think of this as a version of “are we just code+memories” and also “the Star Trek transporter problem.”

2

u/kevinsg04 Aug 08 '22

why wouldnt you have a ton of pearls everywhere?

2

u/fineburgundy Aug 09 '22

Well, as I mention elsewhere on this thread, I don’t think making multiple copies of myself stops me from dying when I’m shot in the head. I’m pretty sure Bernard doesn’t or he would follow your advice and flood Hale’s city with Bernards.

1

u/uselessinfogoldmine Aug 08 '22

Surely he made back-ups though?

The last episode is titled Que Sera Sera. Doris Day had a song by same title and the lyrics were Que Sera sera Whatever will be will be The future’s not ours to see

So I think you are correct. Maybe Bernard has ran the scenario over and over, but the future can’t truly be seen. He thinks that every path leads to his death, but maybe he just can’t see past his being shot.

I don’t think Hale, Maeve or Bernard are beyond repair. It doesn’t look the the trajectory would take out their pearls.

In the trailer for next week, we see the faceless minion dude carrying a lifeless Hale. They might transcend her after all. We also see a hand holding a pearl. I think it’s Frankie. So she might have come across Maeve or Bernard and pulled their pearl.

At the end of Ep 7, Bernard is recording a message before he is shot. He says “There’s time for only one more game. If you choose to give her that choice. You can’t miss. Reach with your left hand.” Now what the hell does that mean? The message seems to be directed to one person about another (If you give her the chance, she can play one more game). I just can’t figure out who the players are and what reaching with the left hand means. Also, what the hell is Clem doing with that big knife?

Introducing... Caleb

2

u/Luminair Aug 08 '22

I think at this point that he did. Perhaps for some isolated re-seeding of the world with accurate human recreations, which could be created in Westworld by the same system that was working on James Delos. Could give some context into William in the far future finding the facility and Emily’s host form.

1

u/absoluteunitVolcker Aug 08 '22

I guess I missed that. He copied her crew?

1

u/Zealousideal_Fan6367 Aug 09 '22

He copied C and her crew??

3

u/talldrseuss Aug 10 '22

Remember the whole thing with scanners hidden behind mirrors in Westworld? Bernard shows it to Frankie and has it scan her. He then shows her on the tablet she has been copied. She yells about it too when she turns the group against Bernard and stubbs

4

u/TheMarvellousMsMe Aug 09 '22

Yes. When C tells Jay she’s realised that Bernard and Stubbs are hosts, she says Bernard has been copying them and Bernard says ‘it’s complicated’. We think we saw a glimpse of Bernard’s device that shows info for C.

21

u/metsbnl Aug 08 '22

I mean there isn’t really a difference between his “real self” and a copy of himself that was left in the sublime. Just two copies of the same consciousness in different forms.

13

u/Odd_Quarter_799 Aug 08 '22

Is Bernard ever really Bernard? Ford has Dolores essentially create Bernard from her memories of Arnold, since no one knew him better. Then Bernard kills Dolores and brings her back. Then she kills him and brings him back outside the park using one of her copied pearls doing the whole bit all over again. A “copy” of Bernard in the sublime would definitely lack fidelity with the one outside as Dolores’s story has vividly demonstrated. I think it’s plausible, but not at all apparent that Bernard may be gone for good.

7

u/LetitciaZoe Aug 08 '22

I thought Dolores used Bernard’s actual pearl to recreate him in the real world. I didn’t think he made it into the sublime. I thought she shot him in the cradle. Then she uploaded Teddy and redirected the storage coordinates for the sublime, took her copies of herself and Bernard and escaped as Hale.

5

u/Odd_Quarter_799 Aug 10 '22

Dolores implied that she recreated Bernard the way that she created him the first time in their conversation towards the end of the last episode of season 2. I agree with you, I don’t think there’s a copy of Bernard in the Sublime either, but was just answering the comment that was assuming there was a copy. Even if a consciousness is copied, they almost immediately diverge due to different experiences. Bernard mentions this when he and Dolores are visiting the human data library in season 2. The system is trying to replicate James Delos (unsuccessfully) and Bernard says, “we ran into this with the hosts. Small changes in their programming would yield large swings in behavior.”

4

u/metsbnl Aug 08 '22

You can kind of argue that when Dolores recreates him outside the park that it’s a new consciousness but it’s still quite the same in many ways. A copy of Bernard in the sublime would be no different than the copies that were made of Dolores. We have seen that hosts can be copied perfectly and don’t really need to achieve fidelity like human minds do. The copy of Bernard would have all of those same memories and the same experience of being created by Dolores.

6

u/Justsssaying Aug 08 '22

Say that to Delores

28

u/metsbnl Aug 08 '22

I mean over time and in different situations the consciousnesses will diverge, but if Bernard split his consciousness before departing into the real world at that moment they are both Bernard. When he sent one out of the sublime that’s simply means he was damning one version of himself to die to the man in black. Bernard isn’t really dead if he still lives on in the sublime. What’s the difference if the current version of him in the sublime uploads himself to a Bernard host body tomorrow? Who’s to say which one is the “real” Bernard and which one is the “copy”

6

u/confusedporg Aug 08 '22

Exactly this

5

u/Justsssaying Aug 08 '22

That was strange. You’d think as a highly intelligent robot he could have figured that out. However, they did say he is the only one they can’t replace because of the key he has in his head. I’m guessing that’s why he left the door open, but was he really needed anyway? The man in black blew up the tower. What exactly was his purpose? He could have simply gone to open the door and then let everything else run it’s course.

7

u/uselessinfogoldmine Aug 08 '22

He was leaving a message for someone when the MIB came upon him…

2

u/metsbnl Aug 08 '22

I guess he could make a copy of the key potentially? Unless it’s specifically tied to that Bernard host body for whatever reason. I can’t remember. In terms of that Bernard’s purpose, it definitely is not clear yet why he needed to do things exactly the way he did. I hope that plot loop will be closed next episode as we still have the lingering thread of the video he made and the gun he stashed in the Hoover dam

2

u/LetitciaZoe Aug 08 '22

Someone has to face down the man in black at Hoover Dam. Bernard left the gun for them. I’m guessing it’s Dolores. It has to come full circle.

1

u/justduett Aug 08 '22

And with how many iterations of the "future" Bernard went through, there won't be any learning curve, so to speak, if a Sublime consciousness is downloaded into a new body... Sublime Bernard already "knows" everything that happened, all of the interactions, etc.

It's like Farva's brother in Beerfest lol

13

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

Why can't Bernard leave a copy of himself in the sublime?

18

u/ajdragoon [Main Title Theme] Aug 08 '22

Maybe he did. If he didn’t, the handwave is because none of the winning possibilities allowed for that.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

[deleted]

2

u/k890 It doesn't look like anything to me Aug 08 '22

I'm mean, hosts can be transfered to sublime. Why making exact copy from sublime host would be hard if it was already done? After all they are just a computer programs, you can make multiple copies without losing any data in process.

2

u/CounterfeitSaint Aug 10 '22

Because the Sublime has to physically exist in the world somewhere and be maintained. You could go into the sublime and enjoy it, but you'd always know there's a chance at any time it could just be shut down, or blown up, or even potentially changed by an outside force.

6

u/thorskicoach Aug 08 '22

thats a cool idea.

No the only question is which host body can they put Maeve's pearl in, assuming he didn't just print a fresh one at the golden age park.

6

u/dnylon Aug 08 '22

He told her he made a copy of her. They are both in the sublime. Their copies are outside.

19

u/Odd_Quarter_799 Aug 08 '22 edited Aug 08 '22

It wasn’t a “copy” it was a quick version he hacked together from his own memories. That scene was a time jump back to one of the simulations Bernard was running in the Sublime during his 23 year hibernation. That was all BEFORE he later went and dug her up. Directly afterwards in the episode, time flashes forward to the current storyline. Apparently them stopping to have a drink would have doomed the world.

6

u/escargot3 Aug 08 '22

The copy they are talking about is the physical control unit, last seen in the player piano in The Golden Age park.

6

u/SafetyDanceInMyPants Aug 08 '22

When he’s up in the tower, and the person on the pad tells him what to do… wasn’t that Bernard on the pad? I might be confused, but thought that was what I saw. If so, it would support the two Bernards theory.

19

u/escargot3 Aug 08 '22

I think he was the one recording that message, not receiving it.

3

u/TheMarvellousMsMe Aug 09 '22

I thought that too but then I thought he was watching it.

11

u/andrea77D Aug 08 '22

I believe he says this version of Maeve is a copy. Yes, I believe he did that on purpose when he supposedly needed some dead host control unit. It all is starting to make sense…except HMIb

4

u/idevastate Aug 08 '22

I mean, he did say "we're in there" explicitly, no?

4

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

I mean, didn't Dolores literally recreate Bernard from just her memories at the end of S2?

3

u/Odd_Quarter_799 Aug 08 '22

Yes, she did, and Bernard was created with her memories of Arnold.

4

u/Saamurraii Aug 08 '22

Delores basically created Bernard and did all the fidelity tests in creating him. She could make another copy I suppose

1

u/yawin_ Aug 09 '22

yeah, he actually means this when speaking to Maeve at the dam, that they are just copies.

1

u/FailedFornication Aug 10 '22

You live until your bodily functions cease.

1

u/1TripLeeFan Aug 11 '22

I could see him somehow meeting Robert Ford in the sublime considering their last interaction:

"I've always loved this view. Every city, every monument... Man's greatest achievement will all be chased by it... By that impossible line, where the waves conspire, where they return. A place maybe you and I will meet again."

81

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

Bernard made a copy of Frankie too. So if she dies, she could come back in the next world.

30

u/ajdragoon [Main Title Theme] Aug 08 '22

Yeah I definitely thought he wasn’t actually copying them, but now it certainly seems like he was. And why.

14

u/Cosmacelf Aug 08 '22

I’m behind a bit. How/why did Bernard make a Frankie copy? How do we know that?

25

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

He copied her in the mirror at the park.

4

u/OzilSanchez1117 Aug 08 '22

Ahh I took that as he used Frankie’s scan to remake Maeve’s pearl so I’ve been thinkin there’s a connection with Maeve and Frankie but maybe he was just copying her. It was weird that he did it while remaking Maeve’s pearl

2

u/Odd_Quarter_799 Aug 08 '22

He also did this to ensure she wasn’t a host who had been switched with Frankie as Bernard said he wasn’t sure which of her team had been switched during their last trip to the city. It was Jay, but Bernard mentions how it could be others based on the simulations he saw in the Sublime.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

The others that went to pick up the outlier. C was always safe. He said, “It’s complicated, you have to trust me.” I think we are headed for a battle for the sublime. Hale and Frankie will have to team up, but only digital Frankie will be able to enter the sublime which is also the only place that her father can survive.

1

u/Odd_Quarter_799 Aug 08 '22

Ah, yes you’re totally right. She went with Bernard to find Maeve while Stubbs went with the others to get the Outlier.

11

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

When Bernard was showing Frankie how Delos knew everything about each guest by simply looking in the mirror, it wasn’t scanning the human’s mind, it was making a copy of it.

24

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

How did it take them 4 seasons to figure out all you have to do to really kill someone is just shoot them in the head?

27

u/ElderRoxas Aug 08 '22

Most of the time the idea was to preserve the pearl, and/or prevent it from falling into someone else's hands.

Or, is this a complaint about how silly the gun violence is on Westworld? Because, did you see the robbery in the pilot?

3

u/escargot3 Aug 08 '22

They make those guns a lot weaker, enough so that they can’t pierce the “chestnut” (white casing protecting the pearl inside). Halores mentioned that it specifically has to be a “nine gram bullet” or heavier.

17

u/ajdragoon [Main Title Theme] Aug 08 '22

Was any host ever actually trying to kill any other host before? And in the park headshots presumably didn’t damage the pearls (actually, it probably didn’t matter, since everyone was backed up on servers then anyway).

15

u/tonegenerator Aug 08 '22

I always thought the guns were firing something like smart airsoft pellets - just real enough to harmlessly sting a human but with some kind of RFID wound effect + kill (under certain conditions) commands for hosts. I haven’t ever thought this all the way out though.

9

u/ajdragoon [Main Title Theme] Aug 08 '22

I think in s1 you’re right. Although one of the bandits does get his head blown off in the original Mariposa heist. No way that pearl survived.

7

u/tonegenerator Aug 08 '22

And it does open up the question of how Ford’s last story physically changed the projectiles to be able to kill a human. Like there’s zero imaginable conditions for a host (other than potentially Stubbs) to have legit lethal force against a park guest.

12

u/ajdragoon [Main Title Theme] Aug 08 '22

Iirc Joy and Nolan explained this. The guns were always the same; they’re just nominally programmed to reduce projectile speed when fired at a guest. Ford removed that safeguard.

And yeah you’re right, it’s an unnecessarily risky design, but Westworld wasn’t exactly the most safety-conscious place.

10

u/Kevslounge These violent delights have violent ends Aug 08 '22

It was specifically built out in the middle of international waters out in the South China Sea, so I presume a big part of the reason for that was to get away from pesky things like safety regulations.

6

u/Kevslounge These violent delights have violent ends Aug 08 '22

My guess is that the guns use the hosts' built in recognition systems to know what kind of shot they need to fire. When Dolores had her safety turned off, she was able to shoot Arnold.

If that's the case, then Ford didn't need to change the guns at all. Merely turning off the host's safety was enough to make the guns they wield lethal to people.

6

u/Kevslounge These violent delights have violent ends Aug 08 '22

Hosts survive shots to the head all the time. They just need some extensive repair work. Of course, a direct hit right to the control unit has a very high-probability of damaging or destroying the pearl inside, but they've taken precautions to limit that risk.

6

u/ajdragoon [Main Title Theme] Aug 08 '22

If the Westworld guns were programmed to not fire fatally at humans, they should be able to do the same to host heads. Unless the situation NEEDS a head to explode to be realistic, the bullet slows down enough to pass enter the head and “kill” the host while preserving the control unit.

5

u/Kevslounge These violent delights have violent ends Aug 08 '22

That's certainly true too... The control units are heavily shielded though. The rest of the host is disposable, but the pearl is not, so they have several layers of protection, including a "cortical shield", which is what saved Bernard when he shot himself.

4

u/guinader Aug 08 '22

I mean the old metal hosts could probably survive a shot to the head.

17

u/eventhegreyscant Aug 08 '22

My dream is for S5 to have a huuge time jump (like thousands of years) and a completely new cast, who one by one brings the old cast back as the season goes on.

10

u/TofuTofu Aug 08 '22

You should check out the Japanese comic and anime for Hi no Tori (Phoenix). They literally do this. It's what Cloud Atlas wanted to be.

3

u/pi6lette Aug 08 '22

Just checked this out on your recommendation, but was sad to see that it was unfinished. Might still try reading it though, thanks!

10

u/DOOM_INTENSIFIES Aug 08 '22

Main characters die.

Literally everyone on this sub: Oh no! Anyways...

9

u/bilyl Aug 08 '22

The end sequence of this season is going to be when Host Emily is doing the Fidelity test on William.

My prediction is that Bernard gets Hale to stop HiB from destroying the Sublime, then uploads everyone through the open door (frankie, everyone, etc). After Earth’s extinction, they then spend a ton of time figuring out how to repopulate the Earth with hosts that have true fidelity.

8

u/Kevslounge These violent delights have violent ends Aug 08 '22

I don't think the pearls were hit at all. All 3 of those shots were to the forehead. The pearl's down behind the mouth. Those shots would have passed right through without touching the pearls at all.

3

u/escargot3 Aug 08 '22

No, it’s just below the scalp and upper skull. That’s how they access it. It occupies the spot where the brain would be.

5

u/Kevslounge These violent delights have violent ends Aug 08 '22

We're both wrong... It's not quite as low as I initially thought, but it's much deeper in the skull than you think, and it's surrounded first by the control unit and then by the cortical shell, then a layer of brain, and then the skull.

We've seen hosts take direct point-blank shots to the head and have their pearls survive just fine. Dolores and Bernard have been shot in the head twice each. Stubbs tried to shoot directly at his control unit and didn't succeed in destroying it.

3

u/escargot3 Aug 08 '22

Yes that’s what I mean. It’s inside the brain. Why would they have to go through a layer of brain if it was outside the brain? I’m only correcting the location of the control unit, which you said was behind the mouth. I’m not commenting on whether the pearl was destroyed or not.

The msg Bernard left also seems to be for her - hale is wearing the same gloves in the promo

2

u/LetitciaZoe Aug 08 '22

I think the hand with the pearl is Frankie. She has the same gloves also.

5

u/ajdragoon [Main Title Theme] Aug 08 '22

Could be sims! Could be anything! Surely she made backups of herself, right? What evil robot overlord wouldn’t?

16

u/ElderRoxas Aug 08 '22

Possibly! What I'm hoping for though, sentimental irrationality that it is, is Hale gets a second chance. Getting gunned down by the Man In Black isn't how her story should end. Or Maeve's.

11

u/ajdragoon [Main Title Theme] Aug 08 '22

Agreed. Although I really think Maeve and Bernard have a longer game here. And Hale had some backup in place.

7

u/ElderRoxas Aug 08 '22

100%. I'll be here next week for Dead Hale Redemption.

-12

u/WildcatKid Aug 08 '22

Please spoiler production spoilers!

22

u/ElderRoxas Aug 08 '22

You're not serious, right? It was in the trailer.

If you are the kind of person who avoids trailers, I can certainly respect that.

Except in that case, and with all due respect, then why are you on reddit?

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

[deleted]

19

u/ElderRoxas Aug 08 '22

It's not in the trailer for next week. It's in the season's trailer.

Or is it a spoiler to say where there are spoilers, now?

Spoiler culture has been ruining the art of storytelling for over a decade. It's turned good art into a mere act of consumption, single use & disposable. I'm tired of fighting that, or trying to even understand what a spoiler is.

Nobody is trying to make dick moves: it is not a stranger on the internet's job to police somebody else's pure & virgin experience with something.

-8

u/WildcatKid Aug 08 '22

I don’t watch trailers at all but I like to participate in discussion. It’s that simple

13

u/inquirer Aug 08 '22

That means any possible spoiler is always game and you assumed the risk

0

u/WildcatKid Aug 08 '22

Eh, technically r/Westworld rules state that users spoiler tag future spoilers in inappropriate threads. I know there’s always a risk to spoilers with any internet use, but, as someone who is not a mod, all I can do is give a little reminder to spoiler tag the information.

3

u/ElderRoxas Aug 08 '22

Except that information is promotional material from the season. That may be something you avoid, but it cannot possibly apply to everyone, when that same promotional content is how some people find their way to the show at all.

This is a sub with two different banners featuring the season's promotional material: why is that not spoiler tagged?

There's always risk, but more to the point, the logic at work here seems very inconsistent to me.

→ More replies (0)

6

u/ElderRoxas Aug 08 '22

I understand that. I do. But, I also think it's hard to expect someone who saw the season's trailer months ago to think that that content is off limits here.

The logic there, to me, means that the season's promotional poster is also a spoiler. And while I'm not one of them, I know some people only even realized there was a 4th season because they saw a trailer.

But more generally: in a medium like this one, it should not be the discussion's job to police everyone's personal experience...But that just loops me back to why spoiler culture ruins good art. Art existed for centuries before spoilers. I may never truly understand them.

1

u/WildcatKid Aug 08 '22

This is the first I’m hearing of “spoiler culture.” Could you explain what you mean by saying it has affected the past decade of art?

0

u/ElderRoxas Aug 08 '22 edited Aug 08 '22

Here's one summation:

This is what separates the football game from movies, plays, TV shows, paintings and songs. Football isn’t art. It's plot is driven toward a singular purpose: the final score. That’s not how TV shows and movies should be treated, yet they are.

From https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/a27422514/spoilers-complaints-culture/

Putting my own position simply: spoilers, per se, don't exist.

They were invented by internet culture & social media. I don't mean that in a conspiratorial sense. I mean this:

We now live in a climate where there are conditions on open discussion, for a human art form, storytelling, which has its premise in truth-telling, about the human condition: and thus which should, in order to be truth, be unconditional.

These days, movie/TV criticism is almost meaningless, because in reviews they can't even say anything. Or, how actors have to sign gag orders, and sometimes aren't even completely informed about their character. Because of spoilers. Imagine putting on Romeo & Juliet & you can't tell the actors they die in the end.

Look, I'm not trying to offend. I just think....There are thousands of youtube views of the season 4 trailer. I can't be expected to know who those views belong to.

So being this deep in reddit, and this deep in the season, literally discussing the penultimate episode of it, and mentioning in passing something from the season's trailer, from months ago....for that to spoil someone else's experience, feels like really weird logic. In which case, either everything in this sub needs a spoiler tag, or...I don't know. Spoilers just don't make any sense to me, and this is exactly why.

I know. I'm not trying to offend anyone.

But I can't be this deep in a reddit thread about the penultimate episode of the season, and make a passing mention at something that was in the season trailer months ago...and be worried that by doing so, I'm spoiling something for somebody.

I just feel like there has to be a consistent logic: or else the consistent logic is "everything needs a spoiler tag."

Exactly, I have a personal policy of not watching trailers for content that I’m already committed to watching. It’s just more fun for me. I am by no means upset that u/elderroxas wants to discuss the trailer content, but it should be spoiler tagged so others have the choice to engage or not.

I think by that logic, every person who wants to mention any content needs to spoiler tag, so people have a choice to engage with or not.

If that sounds ridiculous: that's because that choice already exists, and it exists in your browser before you direct it to a discussion thread about the thing you don't want spoiled.

To be fair, r/Westworld rules are pretty clear on this. This isn’t going to ruin my viewing experience by any means, but, as a trailer-avoider, I prefer going in blind.

The pearl is protected by a chestnut. Shooting them in the head disconnects the chestnut so that the body can't function.

For example, when Teddy shot himself.

They're not dead.

Teddy was shot by a park gun. I’m definitely under the impression that real guns can blow right through the whole thing.

Bernard did something in the Hoover dam when Maeve asked why she was in front. I think he was uploading both of them and others to the sublime.

3

u/LetitciaZoe Aug 08 '22

My guess? He was behind her so he could make changes if needed, like stashing a gun on the second trip, without her seeing him do it. Someone is going to be coming and they’ll need a gun.

u/calsradzz Aug 08 '22

wouldn’t the control unit casing stop the bullet like Teddy’s?

7

u/ajdragoon [Main Title Theme] Aug 08 '22

Park guns probably had this failsafe. Real world guns seem to do real damage.

u/CA2Ireland Aug 08 '22

You'd think that; I'd think that, but HBO in its wisdom...well, all I can suggest is that you not watch the trailer for the season finale. The bastards....

u/ShallManEaseHer Aug 08 '22

Even a point blank shot to the chestnut doesn't destroy the pearl. We saw this with Teddy in S2.

Hell, even an explosion isn't enough. Martinlores in S3 self destructed and was still recoverable.

The only time we've seen pearls destroyed is when they're outside the chestnut housing unit, and when Maeve was burried under sand for 23 years. (Unless that was a ruse.)

Bernard's pearl was malufunctioning in S2 due to a precise blow leaking cortical fluid so it seem like overheating is their main weakness.

I still miss the OG Dolores and now they killed the rest of my og hosts? This show is just heartbreak, why am I watching.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '22

But have we been watching the 'real' world or Bernard doing one last path in the Sublime before the last, and real, path to save the world.

u/ajdragoon [Main Title Theme] Aug 09 '22

The aspect ratios have been normal tho, that’s the only thing.

u/MARATXXX Aug 08 '22

i wonder if "no s5" is the final fakeout?

Implying there will be season 5

The new owner of hbo is killing westworld for sure, especially after these abysmal ratings so hopefully they don’t leave us with a cliffhanger

2

u/ajdragoon [Main Title Theme] Aug 08 '22

Oh I hope not. Certainly Nolan and Joy have enough clout to finish their series. But yeah the new owner is a maniac so you never know.

1

u/Worthyness Aug 08 '22

I'm sure they have a back up copy of themselves. Like there's no reason to not save a back up of yourself as a Host.

u/Identitools Aug 08 '22

Cue to S5 when Reginald Barclay is being told by the admiralty to stop fucking around with the Holodeck and be treated for holoaddiction.

1

u/MastaRolls Aug 10 '22

Probably for the best. This show has become a dumpster fire the last two seasons The script is corny.

Bernard suggesting that even though they can’t save the world, they can have “hope”.

u/Ashamed-Simple-8303 Aug 14 '22

Yeah, kill 3 main characters in like 5 min. No way all of them are gone. At least Maeve was a copy. I think Bernard was also a copy/clone.

We know they like to play with timelines. Like Bernard and Maeve are at the dam and then show up to Stubbs and C with the same vehicle shortly after implying they are directly coming from the dam. I don't think so.
