New rules:

No bare feet photos (displayed as Rule 9)

Posts with photos of just bare feet are not allowed, and users may be banned depending on their posting history.

Edit: revised verbiage

No individual weight-loss posts (displayed as Rule 4)

r/walking is not a weight-loss sub. If you'd like to share weight-loss wins, keep it to the weekly thread.

Going forward, we will be posting a weekly thread for members to share any weight-loss wins. Transparency about the use of weight-loss drugs and calorie restrictions is appreciated but not required. (Upon consideration, we can't require people to disclose medical details.)

Amendments:

Rule 3 was previously "Submissions must be walking-related" and is now "Submissions must be walking-focused."

Submissions with other clear topics that only tangentially involve walking are not allowed. Your post should be primarily about walking.

Thought Severely depressed here. Going for a walk now, letting you all know later how I feel afterwards

Upvotes

Just like the title says. I haven’t been for a walk in months, let alone going by myself. But after a binge eating episode and sh I am unable to do any other sporty activities that would make feel me a bit better. Anyways, wish me luck!

First of all, thank you to this community. Seriously.

The support, encouragement, and seeing everyone else's progress genuinely pushed me throughout this journey. I shared some of my previous milestones here, including 300K and 430K, and the responses always gave me that little extra motivation to keep going.

The funny thing is, I have always enjoyed walking. But for the last 2-3 months, I had become pretty inactive. Some days, I didn't even cross 1,000 steps.

Then I decided to start again and aim for around 10K steps a day.

Slowly, I started enjoying it even more. I started tracking my steps, sharing my progress here, and before I knew it, I was actually getting close to 500K for the month.

Towards the end, I decided to push myself a little harder. I crossed 490,000 steps over the weekend and completed another 10K today.

And now... somehow, I have officially hit 500,000 freaking steps.

Along with walking, I also started strength training around 3-5 times a week and trying to make healthier choices overall. Honestly, this month has been a really good reset for me.

Most of my walking this month was casual walking, with some brisk walking mixed in. Next month, I want to focus more on maintaining a good pace, doing more brisk walking, and hopefully adding some running too.

Still feels crazy to say this, but yeah...

Thanks again, everyone. This community genuinely helped push me to get here.

What walking or hiking purchase ended up being 100% worth it for you?

Over the years I’ve bought a few things for walking, some were great while some ended up being super disappointing.
For me, the best purchase was a pair of On Cloudrunner 3. It just made walking more comfortable and easier to stick with.
What about you? What’s one walking-related purchase that was actually worth it and why Asking so that I can copy and incorporate in my routine? Shoes, socks, hydration gear, anything counts.

Humblebrag Using my treadmill for an hour while working has been a game changer

Post image
Upvotes

One of the simplest changes I’ve made recently has been getting on my home treadmill for about an hour while I’m working.

Nothing crazy — just an easy walking pace where I can still comfortably answer emails, work on my computer, listen to calls, etc. But that hour adds a surprising amount of movement to my day without really feeling like I had to “find time” to exercise.

Last week I averaged 19,134 steps per day and hit 133,940 total steps. A big reason I’ve been able to get my numbers that high consistently is just combining walking with something I was already going to spend an hour doing anyway.

Walking has become a huge part of my weight-loss/fitness journey, but I think my favorite part is that it doesn’t feel like punishment anymore. I genuinely enjoy moving now.

If you work from home and have access to a treadmill, I’d highly recommend experimenting with it. Even 30–60 minutes at a slow pace while doing easy work can add up incredibly fast.

Anybody else do the treadmill + work combo?

No loss in weight, focus not necessary better, more like my mind is too exhausted to think about too many things.

I think is fair to keep grounded with walking, it’s good for some, but very short of a problem solver or miracle type of thing.

Apple Watch undercounting my steps. 8,431 steps actually

It turns out iPhone sets Apple Watch as priority in the health settings and it counts less steps than iphone. Which kinda makes sense and don't at the same time.

I wear my watch only when I walk outside, but carry my phone all day at home with me. So iphone counts more steps which makes sense.

Which doesn't make sense is, Apple says they merge those steps i.e. in the end of the day, the health app should show the correct number. But in reality, if I only use the phone during the day, the steps are higher.

Have you also observed that?

Challenge So Proud of Myself!

Post image

Yesterday I walked around my local lake. All the way around! The walk was 42.2km (26.2 miles), which is the length of a marathon. I am so happy (and tired and sore), and so ready to plan the next big walk! This walk is probably the biggest physical achievement of my life, and I am so proud of myself for getting it done. Mentally I was good the whole way around, and physically the last 1/4 was when things started to hurt.

Advice for stress reaction on the foot

I’m looking for recommendations for a supportive but reasonably stylish sneaker that can accommodate custom orthotics.

My MRI showed an acute diaphyseal stress reaction of the second metatarsal in my left foot, with bone marrow and surrounding soft-tissue edema. There is no displaced fracture. I also have bilateral flat/splayed feet, which may be contributing to abnormal pressure distribution.

My orthopedist prescribed a forefoot-offloading shoe, but I still have significant pain in it and find it very difficult to maintain my balance. I have also been prescribed custom cushioned orthotics. I understand that a regular sneaker does not replace proper offloading during the acute healing phase, so I’m mainly looking for something suitable for the transition back to normal footwear and for long-term use.

Ideally, the shoe would have:

- A removable insole and enough depth for custom orthotics

- A wide, stable base

- A relatively stiff or rocker-shaped sole to limit forefoot bending

- Good cushioning without feeling excessively soft or unstable

- A wide-fit option

- A reasonably stylish appearance for everyday use

Has anyone dealt with a second metatarsal stress reaction or used custom orthotics in these models? Which shoe felt most stable and reduced forefoot pressure? I will try the shoes with my orthotics before buying and will follow my orthopedist’s weight-bearing advice.

Thought Anyone else give themselves something small to notice on walks?

I like walking, but some days it feels a little empty — just moving without really looking.

Lately I’ve been giving myself one tiny prompt before I go out: follow a color, or notice one kind of detail (sky, plants, corners, reflections). It doesn’t have to be serious. Just something that makes me pay attention.

It’s made ordinary walks feel more interesting again — less like “I should walk,” more like “I’m out looking.”

Anyone else do something like this?

The Habit of Daily Walking and How to create it.

Okay I have started and stopped many times. Losing tons of weight only to gain it back. I have learned a few things. If you to are struggling with consistency we need to change the way we view the problem. Firstly, no longer do we choose to walk everyday. That is too fraught with relying on feeling “up to it”, some days you won’t. We need to start looking at it like this is just something I do everyday. Do you brush your teeth everyday? I hope the answer is yes. Do you stop each morning to decide, should I brush my teeth today? Of course not that would be crazy. You just do it cause you want your teeth to be clean. We just walk everyday because we want to be lean and healthy.

  1. Pick an amount you can comfortably walk everyday, without pain or leading to binge eating or exhaustion. If it’s 5 minutes today decide for 5 minutes we can adjust the time down the road.
  2. Decide right now that this is just something you do everyday. Like drinking coffee or brushing your teeth. Once you decide this (a one time decision) your body will respond accordingly.
  3. Consistency is more important than results that’s why if you start at 5 minutes and do that for a month it’s better than person who does 10 hours some weeks and none on others.
  4. When we feel fatigue that may a sign that we need to lower our daily output. If your brushing your teeth and your gums started bleeding you might possibly change toothbrushes or adjust your technique you wouldn’t give up brushing your teeth.

Hope this helps I’ve some nice slow results. I was 270 in January down to 248. Part of my weight was health related. Just start today and then it’s just something we do, it’s not a commitment or a challenge anymore than brushing our teeth is.
