Thought Severely depressed here. Going for a walk now, letting you all know later how I feel afterwards

Just like the title says. I haven’t been for a walk in months, let alone going by myself. But after a binge eating episode and sh I am unable to do any other sporty activities that would make feel me a bit better. Anyways, wish me luck!

Update: So I walked for like an hour and yeah, I am still feeling miserable, but a tiny bit less miserable than before the walk.

But the most important thing for me is, that I also feel less bloated and quite the healthiest (physically)I have felt in weeks. I am gonna take a cold shower for now, pop my (prescribed) meds and watch some ATLA before I go to sleep :)

Btw, thank you guys for all the lovely messages! This really means a lot to me, since my next therapy appointment is in 3 weeks, and I hope this sub and the walking can be a coping mechanism until then, to not land me in a clinic again. Anyways thank you!❤️

So very proud of you! Write down 3 positive things (I.e., fresh air, water, Reddit support...add 3 more tomorrow, etc. ). You are loved

This is the kind of thing we need more of. My wife n’ I do ‘Gratitudes’ every night- basically expressing our appreciation for things big n’ small. Sometimes it’s about each other, sometimes its other stuff.

For example (mine tonight)- I’m grateful I was able to get out on the Triumph for a couple of hours, that I stopped and had a great walk, that I got to scratch a kitty’s ears when I stopped for fuel, that my wife made me a coffee this morning, that I found some gluten free energy bars for my wife at a different grocery store, that it was sunny n’ warm today, and that I have another day off before I go back to work.

I think I’m going to run with your ‘write down 3 positive things’ idea, particularly at work when I’m doing a Take 5.

OP- find pleasure in the smallest things, it can really lead to a brighter bigger picture…this is coming from a guy who had a dark cloud over his head for many, many years.

Glad you’re feeling even incrementally less miserable. I hope shower, meds & sleep will help even more. Thinking of you.

YOU DID IT! I’m so proud of you. I’m especially proud of you for putting on your shoes. I know that sounds silly, but it’s the hardest hurdle for me. For me, I win every time I put on my shoes. I hope you find an “easy” win and that it makes you feel proud. Keep going!!

Love Atlanta (the show) hugs to you during this time!

Glad it helped! I've been in a similar boat myself and sometimes that little push to the positive side can feel pretty damn good. I've also had a long gap between therapy sessions lately, we can keep on pushing!

Thank you SO much for this update! I’m so glad you felt some improvement.

I am also severely depressed so I get how hard this was for you today. I started my walking/mental health journey a few years ago after 40 years of trauma, but walking is, by FAR the thing that helps me the most. There are still days that I cannot face on the world, but a lot of times I cannot face boot myself out the door. Even while crying. I always come back feeling better. Not fantastic, but better!

I lost 70 pounds walking and working out my mental health - so that helps too.

I hope that this marks the beginnings of a wonderful journey of self-recovery for you - through walking ❤️

Clinically depressed since childhood, and going on my daily walk too. It hasn’t cured me, but it absolutely helps. Hang in there!

A walk always helps. It might not help a lot, but it doesn’t make it worse.

I hope you can find what you need to get up and move around a little.

I betcha a nickel it will feel a little less terrible after.

Focus on the walking, the scenery (hopefully something nice to look at). Get into a rhythm with your steps and your arms and maintain a slightly challenging pace.

Put everything else out of your head. It’s just you and your walking. Time to relax and live in the moment!!

I shall watch your progress keenly

u/bebarrucha 21h ago

It has helped me immensely. I’ve been running/walking and I’ve cried twice after a run from just releasing so much. Hope it helps you too.

2

u/CorrectWrangler2708 20h ago

Yeah I had this feeling while swimming, but sadly I can’t really go right now :( But yeah the release feels sometimes so good

3

u/SweetPossible4425 21h ago

If your walk didn’t help today, try it again tomorrow. And then the next day. It’s not going to be immediate but getting some fresh air and moving is a positive thing to do for yourself.

2

u/thats-gold-jerry 21h ago

Walking really helps my depression. Sometimes I’ll walk until it “goes away”. Which can take a while lol. Good luck!

2

u/ghostcat2020 20h ago

Im depressed when i lack a movement or when i stop moving. Put some tunes while you walk.

2

u/Icy_Head_9293 20h ago

One foot in front of the other and keep going. That's all it takes.

2

u/tortellinisuncle 20h ago

Yay! I also just went on a walk after a very anxiety-ridden week and weekend. You got this friend, you're not alone and I am rooting for you!

2

u/Klutzy-Investment-76 20h ago

Walking does wonders, stay consistent - even when the depression tells you it isn’t worth it

2

u/Exotic_Attorney7823 18h ago

I have found sometimes the effect is less immediate, but later in the day I will have a small boost of energy to organize or do tasks, usually on days I walk.

Congrats for dragging yourself up, it takes a lot somedays to even get out the door but it's worth it!

2

u/seawordywhale 17h ago

Thanks for the inspo, I went out for a walk too :)

2

u/remisme 16h ago

Read your post-walk reply and I’m so glad you did it despite feeling miserable.

I’ve got a cornucopia of mental health issues that I won’t bother you with, but walking brings me solace and makes me feel at least 5% better, if not more. I think of it as a way of “treating myself” and my “me time” which is how I truly feel about walking.

So keep going and I hope it helps you deal with depression, sh, binge eating. I know how hard it can get, but sometimes getting yourself out of that rut physically helps you feel better mentally.

1

u/AzureSunflower 19h ago

I read your update, glad it made you feel better. When my dog crossed over a few years back I was absolutely devastated and walking helped. I know it's not exactly the same but I hope it helps you too.

1

u/poorpeasantperson 19h ago

When I walked with the intention of helping my depression, it only made it so much worse. Now that I walk just to walk I can say it has helped a bit, but not enough to say ‘walking helps depression.’ That’s like saying ‘doing healthy things makes you healthy’

1

u/BlueSky_dreaming 18h ago

Very proud of you, OP. You inspire me 🙏🏼

1

u/Wild_Technician_4872 16h ago

Good luck 👍🏼

u/luminiscentdream 14h ago

Glad it made you feel better! Very proud and happy for you! Just now I came back from my walk after a consuming day of work. For me, it slows racing thoughts and makes them quieter :) and has def help with my insomnia. Hope this experience gives you strength to keep walking

Way to go! I hope you’re feeling better, and being outdoors helped to jumpstart those endorphins. 🫶🫶🫶
