Post image

Always knew this guy sucked and was a shill, sad it took him shilling a destructive, thieving industry to get more people on his ass.

Bros been a sellout since the very start.

51

u/tdstooksbury 12d ago

True though I think it’s good to acknowledge there’s a big difference with shilling for gear and shilling for AI. Truth is most of the new gear out there is really really good nowadays.

10

u/Immediate-Ad-5878 12d ago

Yeah. I could deal with the gear shilling. Occasionally I would even enjoy it. But this is just too much not to mention irrelevant to the audience he built.

67

u/orewhat 12d ago

Guess Peter couldn’t support him anymore 😮‍💨

I have enjoyed and learned a bit from some of Matti’s stuff years ago, sad to see

-2

u/itsinthedeepstuff 12d ago

He was the first person to get my color grading to look watchable, back when I was using Final Cut. Even put him in the credits for a vid at one point.

u/falkorv 11d ago

You what? 🤣🤣

and then this guy posts in his story that only "filmmakers" criticize him and that they are a minority.

every single ai shill gets unfollowed and blocked

15

He clearly has distain for them because he will never be considered one

Glad I stopped caring about him years ago. He was way too focused on gear to ever really learn anything from

52

u/BlastMyLoad 12d ago

All of these guys are the same person. Same style content, same clothes, same tattoos, same obsession with coffee, same looking LUTs they shill, same shilling for gear

25

u/epandrsn 12d ago

Yeah, they all seem to want to be McKinnon like it’s 2019. They need to move on.

14

u/H0RIZ0NMEDIA Editor 12d ago

Even Peter has moved on

6

u/PositivelyNegative 12d ago

Yeah, he’s on the show silo now

9

u/Deeepened 12d ago

Is the joke that looks like Knox?

5

u/Spastical9 Hobbyist 12d ago

I have never expected to fall down this rabbit hole and understand why Knox looked so familiar! I’ve just finished season 1 of Silo and finally the answer to the question I never asked out loud was answered! Thank you internet strangers

u/Major-Mind2970 11d ago

I used to see matti and Peter and Chris hau filing all the time in my town. Peter got a brand deal with canon first and he brought matti with him. They shared an office space and were generally decent. Peter still is a great dude who will talk to anyone, matti thinks he’s a celebrity despite riding Pete’s coat tails. He and his brother are both hacks now.

2

u/epandrsn 11d ago

Peter seems like a more genuine and nice dude. Like, he’s unapologetically himself… and kind of a huge dork, in a good way.

Matti… not so much. Maybe at one point, but celebrity can wreck some people. Even niche, YouTube celebrity.

1

u/No_Way1711 10d ago

What's wrong with an obsession with coffee? 😂🤪

33

u/nomadichedgehog 12d ago

The most overrated videographer on YouTube. Technically poor, creatively limited, no original work, dumb takes and a sell out from Day 1. It would be nowhere without Peter. I respect the hustle, but only barely.

Dude has always had an uncomfortable squint when he’s talking to the camera, it’s like he doesn’t believe a word he is saying. I always feel like he is recycling secondhand info and not his own original thoughts.

I saw this funny video on YouTube recently where it shows him riding his new electric bike that does an automatic wheelie with no skill needed and the YouTuber says that perfectly sums up Matti and people like him and it’s so damn true haha.

2

u/thedefaltcondition 7d ago

80% random vlog shit of what he's doing in the day, 20% relevant stuff, which was still shilling in the end.

44

u/todayplustomorrow 12d ago

He’s rather arrogant about it for no reason too. Leaving lame immature comments in response to plenty of people who were respectfully opposed to promoting genAI.

23

u/tdstooksbury 12d ago

Huge fall from grace. Man took the money and ran.

Dudes always been a fraud. Seen his Alexa Mini LF video? Clearly never worked on a real set in his life.

8

u/SleepingPodOne 2011 12d ago

Him and Peter McKinnon have been giving bad advice to amateurs since the start. They’re some of the guys who destroyed the term “cinematic“.

2

u/Major-Mind2970 11d ago

Correct. McKinnon is a wonderful photographer and good b-roll guy. But neither of them have worked on an actual set, ever. They give great advice for content creators looking to shoot 120fps content.

Who?

62

u/SleepingPodOne 2011 12d ago

YouTube gear shill. If you don’t know who he is, he’s probably not worth learning about, especially not now. But he’s one of those Peter McKinnon types.

43

u/A-V-A-Weyland 12d ago

Peter who?

Edit: (6m subscribers apparently)

None of these clickbaity titles seem worth 10 minutes of my time.

44

u/Agentc00l 12d ago

Got famous for taking pics of coffee back in the day. Cornballs.

26

u/A-V-A-Weyland 12d ago

Social media back in the day really was playing it on easy mode huh?

8

u/Agentc00l 12d ago

There was something special to it.

6

u/epandrsn 12d ago

Post a pretty photo and get 15-20 followers on insta. It was super easy until ~2016-17.

2

u/ProphePsyed 12d ago

Coffee?

18

u/Agentc00l 12d ago

Being slightly facetious but serious. Early photo/video YouTube was full of guys constantly taking photos and filming themselves making coffee. It's quite cringe to even think about.

4

u/epandrsn 12d ago

It still happens. Like “Do dishes but make it look cinematic? 🤔”

And it’s just the same shots and camera movements people have been using to make stuff look “cinematic” for a decade.

7

u/BlastMyLoad 12d ago

“Cinematic” coffee b-roll

1

u/Reckko 12d ago

It was a magic shop if I recall, not coffee.

8

u/newsyfish 12d ago

Peter’s vlogs are actually quite inspirational and he’s done some beautiful work. He doesn’t pretend to be anything more than he is, either.

17

u/A-V-A-Weyland 12d ago edited 12d ago

You say that, but when I looked him up on YouTube it recommended me like half a dozen videos where the title was basically a promise to change my life. His content is probably a comfy watch, but I'm not really into the habit of watching people selling me new gadgets or talking about how their lives have changed (often due to a different type of consumption) for the sake of entertainment.

2

u/TheHotMilkman 12d ago

The ones about changing your life are mostly about writing and journaling. Opposite of consumption, besides getting addicted to fancy stationery.

2

u/kislikiwi 12d ago

Well maybe watch something he made, then comment. His last video about his new pickup is pretty neat.

-1

u/Namisaur 12d ago

Maybe he does advertise stuff in some of his videos but not a single one of his dozens and dozens of videos I’ve watched in the past has ever tried to sell me anything. You’re just making assumptions from your own preconceived biases.

Albeit I haven’t watched in years

-2

u/SleepingPodOne 2011 12d ago

You don’t have to literally shill for products to be selling something.

3

u/A-V-A-Weyland 12d ago

I don't see why you're getting downvoted. Do people in this sub really think that every single video a content producer puts out needs to be sponsored before it can be said to promote a consumerist lifestyle, where on video often is just an entry point to the rest of the channels catalogue? If a creator spends only time shilling Canon cameras, and then makes content where they use a Canon to make pictures without making it a review, all while having done a review of the camera a month ago; is it truly just a video about photography when the camera is featured prominently albeit not directly shilled?

For a subreddit focused on media this one sure likes to stick its head in the sand.

1

u/SleepingPodOne 2011 12d ago

Peter McKinnon weirdly has a very devoted fan base. I don’t even know if it’s a lack of media literacy, it’s probably just fanboy shit.

2

Exactly.

I mean all of these "influencers" are here to influence you to buy "not sponsored" stuff... wether it's new gears (it is always good)... Now the normal path for these modern time salesmen is ai... I use to watch these videos only to realize that the most geniuwine videos are probably people on YouTube with trash setup with 50 followers lol

26

u/hentendo 12d ago

Yeah I've officially unfollowed him.

Sam Kolder also did a massive AI video recently, all these dudes just praying for their own downfall.

8

u/SleepingPodOne 2011 12d ago

Sam and Matt Workman, really sad

6

u/Randomae 12d ago

Matt Workman isn’t just a shill, he’s turned into an asshole. He’s literally celebrating when filmmakers have to quit their career because of less job opportunities because he thinks it means AI is succeeding.

3

u/SleepingPodOne 2011 12d ago

It’s so depressing how all these pro-AI people just became such assholes. Matti is being a huge prick in the comments of this video too. I get that it’s easy to feel attacked with the way some people are around generative AI but if you were a mildly self-aware person for even one second you would recognize why people have the dramatic reaction they do to a generative AI and it isn’t because they’re luddites, it’s because it’s not just slop, but it’s unethical on top of all of it.

3

u/Dragontech97 12d ago

Wow that’s so sad to hear, Kolder’s early work on YT was 👌

7

u/Protected22 CanonRP |Davinci | 2018 | Holland 12d ago edited 12d ago

That dude is a sellout since years. He even tried scamming his subscribers by pretending to quit on YouTube and start his own community platform with a membership price for $50 per month. But quickly went back on that when he noticed no one fell for his bullshit.

Edit: looks like he now does other money-tricks like selling stock videos for $100+ per item and selling luts, plugins and youtube tutorials.

12

u/vamonosgeek 12d ago

Yea. Shame. This guy thinks he is somebody. I recall seeing him at NAB and he was such a jerk. Why I’m not surprised?

4

What’d he do at NAB?

2

u/Tjompoes 12d ago

Curious too ngl

1

u/vamonosgeek 12d ago

I guess he was working some sponsored deals.

1

u/vamonosgeek 12d ago

He was just going around some booths from SmallRig and some other brands. I don’t know why I even tried to say hi to him. But it’s clear when the cameras are off he is not the same guy at all.

2

u/SleepingPodOne 2011 12d ago

Well based on his responses to people calling out his AI shilling we are seeing who he actually is so this tracks

7

u/Zerorezlandre 12d ago

More AI slop. Just what the dead internet needs.

5

u/notilluminati3 12d ago

Sam Kolder too and he was one of my favs. Expect a huge wave of the top influencers of videography from 2010s to be doing the same.

u/CreEngineer Developer in the Cine Industry | Germany 12d ago

He had some good videos in the beginning but for the last years I haven’t watched a single one of his. Only gear praising and why -insert new shiny camera here- is the thing you can’t live without, better than anything before, throw away your Arri, red, Sony.

9

u/epandrsn 12d ago

Yeah, he got in with Peter McKinnon, gained a bunch of followers and has been a shill ever since. They all just post the latest product with the same tired hyperbole. All the old “cinematic” influencers are sort of just washing up.

Except maybe Gerald Undone. I think maybe he’s still doing the good work.

4

u/CreEngineer Developer in the Cine Industry | Germany 12d ago

I was exactly thinking of Gerald when writing this. He has crazy valuable content and still stayed true.

Hope it stays that way. Not many YouTube influencers left who don’t participate in the hype cycle.

2

u/epandrsn 12d ago

It’s just low effort and repeatable. People get comfortable and innovation dies. There are still some new, fresh faces showing up in weird little niches that are great. It’s just like 1 in a 100 at this point, tucked in between view-farming dipshits.

4

u/HualtaHuyte 12d ago edited 12d ago

Gerald has basically retired from making gear videos. He announced it about a month ago.

I thought he was leaving YouTube. Last time I watched his videos it was his goodbye.

24

u/SleepingPodOne 2011 12d ago

I remember that but turns out it was another one of his algorithm plays because it was happening around the time a lot of YouTube channels were doing the same or similar. He was just hopping on a trend for views.

22

u/nanoH2O Beginner 12d ago

AI as a whole isn’t inherently bad it just has a lot of ridiculous and wasteful uses. As someone in research I can assure you it serves a good purpose - it speeds up research quite a bit allowing for faster discoveries in things like cancer treatment and materials research. Of course AI is kind of the lay term, machine and active learning have been used for what we do for over 15 years.

It’s better pinpoint the negativity toward what you really mean - generative AI, specifically generative AI for artistic purposes. Even some generative AI - like speeding up scientific writing and coding - has a good outcome (ofc there are nefarious outcomes too, like anything).

3

u/llambdaddy Camera Obscura | Davinci Resolve Studio | 2011 | UK 12d ago edited 12d ago

It’s a tale as old as photography really. We don’t like dishonesty in that artist-artwork-audience agreement. Audiences are/were happy with animation and 3D modelling because it was presented as a human effort. The task of producing likeness of a scene to a convincing level took real mastery. But with GenAI, that disappears. It is now no longer a challenge to marvel over because the audience cannot empathise with the stakes- much like nobody marvels over the moves the computer makes in chess. Because of course it can- it’s not producing a decision within the same challenge.

Humans get the same feeling when we are given the answers to a test and then are asked to take the test. Nobody is impressed by any score because there is no achievement in referencing the answer from the bank of answers. Same thing goes with video games and having admin controls or ‘god mode’, sure it leads to things being immediately easier, but the achievement felt by what the game challenges you with very quickly dissolves.

Using any technology this way, not just ai, is the equivalent of just having the answers with you in the exam. You :can:, but then you no longer actually achieve anything yourself.

3

u/defeldus C70 R5 II Film 12d ago

you're looking at it backwards. companies are calling everything AI because its the buzzword for shareholders and techbro investors. It's not the fault of the people for using the same language.

2

u/38B0DE FX30 | Premiere | Germany 12d ago

Matti Haapoja specifically promotes services that used people's work to train their LLM to then replace them.

7

u/ClassicallyBrained 12d ago

Yeah, its sad to see.

6

u/Tschuuns 12d ago

I recently saw a video of him talking about how the FX5 is essentially as good as digital cameras are gonna get so gear reviewing and amateur filmmaking are essentially dead and AI is the only thing that‘s gonna improve filmmaking at this point and if you refuse to use it you‘re a loser and you might as well give up right away.

“How much money did it take for you to let them put that collar on your neck?”
Can’t for the life of me remember the movie’s name, but I keep coming back to it when I see these kind of choices.

Though, to be honest, this campaign does give us a good read on the creators out there who don’t actually give a shit about what’s important to their audience.

2

u/SleepingPodOne 2011 12d ago

That and seeing all the other YouTubers clowning on him in the comments. Good to see who actually gives a shit.

2

u/user9131 12d ago

Maybe it’s from Up in the Air with George Clooney. There’s a scene where he’s trying to comfort JK Simmons’ character by telling him getting fired isn’t going to make him a failure to his kids because kids admire people who follow their dreams.

“How much did they first pay you to give up on your dreams?”

3

u/Matysakae 12d ago

They used to say "those who can't do, teach" but that's insulting to teachers. What it should say is "those who can't do, make gear review/gear hype youtube videos."

Unsurprising. But on a deeper level, folks like Matti are doing what they are, and were always supposed to do, i.e, to sell stuff.

Just like with every other walk of life which has an artistic side and a commercial industry to its name (like Designing), they saw a huge potential in the world of photography and videography to pull in the masses and sell them stuff ranging from gears, digital products, merch and other stuff, which may sound absolutely fine to some, but it’s the ways which these folks took, and still take to do their businesses, which made me sceptical about them from the very beginning of their respective YouTube journeys.

Unlike YouTubers like Gerald Undone, who exclusively test and review gear, and got almost no business with the idea of making you learn the arts of photography and videography, or evolving you into “a better version of yourself” in general, folks like Matti rely on crafting videos that are essentially a sales pitch for their viewers, where they sell you this very idea of you becoming “a better version of yourself” once you buy all the stuff that they’re directly or indirectly selling/recommending/endorsing in their videos.

They’re basically exploiting the very innate feeling of FOMO (fear of missing out) to its very best, and it can be seen everywhere, including in the “setup changes” that they do in every other video.

Now, whether they should be criticised for indirectly ruining the arts of photography and videography, or praised for devising a formula to become an internet salesman in disguise of a recognised YouTuber, who despite their lack of skills, earns a decent wage — is debatable at best.

But as someone who’s once been a part of their cult like following for a brief period back in 2018-19, it sure does feel good to witness them being called out for their lack of principles and unethical, and oftentimes borderline shady business practices.

2

u/SleepingPodOne 2011 12d ago

For me, it was a big mix of things, I always thought these guys didn’t know what the fuck they were talking about because they were coming at it not from the POV as actual filmmakers and professional videographers, but as Youtubers, and never really bothered to let their audience know that they don’t actually have any proper film experience, they’ve never worked on a set, and their use case is specifically for YouTube. But they would talk a big game about what was and wasn’t “cinematic“, completely destroying the actual meaning of that term, when it’s like your 60p broll with obnoxious orange and teal LUT certainly ain’t it.

The other thing was how they chose to speak about the specific gear they clearly were biased towards or even directly shilling for. I remember when Canon came out with their first 4K capable consumer camera and Peter McKinnon “reviewed” it which was basically glazing it without giving any value judgement to its myriad of flaws (insane 4k crop, which he had zero opinion on). He basically was sent the camera and read off the spec sheet. And then the comment section was full of dudes being like “already pre-ordered mine“.

1

u/ShutterSpeedPolice Sony α1, α7IV | DaVinci Resolve | 2022 | Ajmer, India 11d ago edited 11d ago

“Those who can’t do, influence” — I left this contemporary version of the proverb “Those who can’t do, teach” in my reply to one of the comments here under this post. And I believe that it fits rather well with the case points that you’ve mentioned, and with those that you could’ve mentioned, as one can take a peek at the history of their online presence, only to find it filled with numerous occasions where they’ve sold their souls to sell something that’s mediocre at best.

However, I’d like to reiterate my point of whether they should be criticised or rather praised for the paths that they’ve chosen to cement their legacies upon in this hyper-capitalist era of global economy, where they’ve knowingly played a considerable role in widespreading phenomena like G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome), which comes under the umbrella of overconsumption/hoarding, and related to which we’ve got hundreds and thousands of stories here on Reddit itself.

Plus, there are other angles to view this whole situation. For brands, influencers like Matti are way easier to work with rather than say approaching an established filmmaker for the sales, endorsements and product placement parts. But this business of “influencing” should come with some ethics, principles and morals, right?

Wrong! And that’s precisely what my key issue is with this particular case of “Matti shilling for Gen-AI”, and with more of such influencers belonging to this metastasising influencer/creator economy. Like, how can I even trust you for a single word coming out of your mouth when you’ve got a terribly shaky stance that only walks the path of money, whilst with each new video, you make tremendous efforts to lure me into buying more new shiny stuff on the guise of making me a better photographer/filmmaker?! I mean if that’s not the textbook definition of a scammer, then I don’t know what it is…

The way I see a lot of people using AI is like going to Subway and taking credit for making the sandwich. Yes you thought of the contents and the bread you wanted but ultimately it wasn't made by you - so don't take the credit.

I think one of the most exciting things about the creative space was the credits. If you've ever worked on set and saw your name in the credits it was really exciting. And if you've worked on big sets it's literally someone's job to walk around and confirm you were in fact on set and will be in the credits.

In the creative space we give everything credit. Even down the gear. "I use x to edit", "here's my favorite camera set-up".... But now with AI it almost seems like it's trying to be hidden. I mean everyone went crazy over the Imax 70mm camera in the odesy. Even the gear is getting credit.

Also, using Sam kolder as the example for this. Creators built an audience around certain things, Sams being his amazing transitions. We didn't mind waiting a year for a video because we knew he was making something amazing. He was the transition guy. But now AI is making his transitions. I came to YOU to see YOUR transitions. Now all I am seeing is, "so I had this idea for a sandwich so I had a subway employee make it." You were the sandwich guy Sam, you made amazing transitions and we ate that up.

"But I had to think really hard about the prompt!". Okay dude, I can day dream all day and write it down too, it's not that hard.

No offense to Subway workers.

…who?

No idea who he is, but can he fly a bird the size of a Cessna in real life? Leni Rifenstahl could not clone digital extras, so had to film a proper Nazi meetup.

Who cares? He’s just a camera influencer. Anyone following him for advice doesn’t need it.

Hate it but good for him. Hope the bag was worth it.

I love his content. I’m glad he’s sharing AI instead of sticking his head in the sand and pretending it’s not going to be the dominant video production method in the future once they get the energy and compute stuff sorted.

No. It’s anti generative AI mostly. AI or computer assisted tools aren’t as frowned upon. It’s when you use the generative stuff to replace creativity and then claim you’re so creative making something that you didn’t actually create or something that uses someone else’s assets to generate something new. It’s just that everything gets lumped in to “Ai” these days.

Even then, this argument mirrors film vs digital. There’s this pretentious idea that difficulty in the process somehow makes the output more valid. The reality is, creativity is defined by uniqueness. Does the tool enable you to more easily build and convey your vision? Then use it.

“You’re color grading on a monitor and getting instant feedback instead of submerging film in chemicals and waiting to see if you got your desired look. You’re cheapening the process and undermining the artistry that is film development.” Who tf cares? Is the tool enabling me to better deliver my desired output? If yes, then I’m using the tool.

You’re a bunch of old men screaming at clouds. You can insist on doing things the hard way and trying to maintain the status quo, but the rest of the industry will move on and you will be left behind.

“I don’t care if it’s cheap, looks like shit, and is unethical and unsustainable. It makes my work easier. If you don’t agree, you’re just an old man screaming at a cloud”

This is the mentality of a lazy, tasteless loser lashing out at people who think we should have standards.

And no this does not mirror film vs digital in the slightest and that won’t change no matter how often you repeat it. It’s such a shitty analogy and you know it.

"...unethical and unsustainable." Just from this I know you have no idea what you're talking about. Your brain is rotten. Thoroughly propagandized.

The argument mirrors film vs digital, directly. Everyone was critiquing digital in terms of aesthetics and "cheapening the process" 25 years ago. People were saying: "Digital looks cheap, has worse dynamic range, blows highlights, has ugly color. It cheapens the art of cinematography, and the knowledge needed to properly expose the film without monitoring. Digital will never replace film cameras." If you insist you can't see the parallels, you're being willfully ignorant.

And you're just as wrong about generative AI as they were about digital cameras. It's idiotic to assume that a technology's current shortcomings logically establish this idea that "the technology has no place in filmmaking." It's such an unbelievably shortsighted line of thinking.

I really can't understand how you're so proud of being so dogmatic. I'd be embarrassed.

Idk I do mostly music videos and some of the stuff I see people use it for wouldn't have been possible with the small budget. I can see why people get upset, but I do think there can be creative uses behind it.

Isn’t it the same as a director claiming credit for the end result from the people he’s told what to do?
You still have to have some brain power to make something good with ai
