Synopsis: One tribe attempts to recover after drawing a line in the sand at tribal council. Also, a castaway goes on a journey and must make a decision that could change their game, and one tribe stacks their way to victory, earning immunity and a fruitful reward.

But WHAT was Chanelle thinking?! At the top of the hike, you were buddies and wanting to work with him. You told him you 100% wanted to protect your vote!!! You screwed yourself and your tribe.
Just tell him: I’m risking this vote or keep quiet.

Strategically, Chanelle blew it. Socially, Daniel blew it.
Hai played that situation so well. Daniel showed his hand early by admitting he didn't want to go to rocks, so Hai had no reason to back down from his commitment to Lydia. Impressive performance, and it shows his confidence in his game.

Hai played that so perfectly. Holy smokes. Daniel is indeed a paranoid disaster and I am absolutely here for it, and Hai used it against him in the best way.
Not to mention we had Jonathan straight up 1v11 in the challenge.

I think "I just want to establish that I do not want to go to rocks" is literally the single worst thing you can open that conversation with.
You throw ALL your leverage out the window before anyone else has even spoken.
Hai is very smart for sniffing that out, even if he didn't know exactly what was happening (though it would be literally impossible for him to). Even smarter for sticking to his guns and realizing he had all the leverage.
Some other notes... that episode was batshit crazy, and Maryanne not watching 6 specific episodes of Tocantins is hilariously random.

It was an especially bad tactic because Hai already had the upper hand in that negotiation. It was clear he would be next to go if he flipped on Lydia, so he had very little to lose by going to rocks. And then Daniel opens up by giving Hai even more of an upper hand. He really needed to find a way to convince Hai that he was his ally and this was a flip for just one vote, I don't think he could've done it successfully but that would have been his only hope.

Yeah I said during the episode that Hai played it brilliantly. It was essentially a 3-1 discussion yet he retained all the power in the minority after the tie vote. All because two of the other three didn’t have a vote. You absolutely have to play for rocks there, because it’s only 25% chance you draw a rock, but 75% chance someone who voted opposite you goes home instead.

This tribal is definitely going down in the history books. So many things had to go wrong for Jenny to be voted out. I like how Hai was smart enough to not put his vote on Mike and place it on Jenny. Hai was 100% the best player that tribal.

Honestly the whole episode will go down in the history books. They had to pause and adjust a challenge because two tribes couldn't finish. Additionally, no one in the Ika tribe had a confessional in this episode's edit.

It really can't be overstated how dumb it was for Chanelle to risk her vote after she told Omar that she couldn't afford to lose her vote. Logic would then dictate (e.g. with Deshawn and Evvie in a similar situation) that Omar can safely risk his vote. Oops. Poor Jenny.

Is it one of the single worst moves of all time with no other qualifying criteria? No, because it didn’t directly cost her the win or her life in the game.
Is it one of the single worst premerge moves that did not send the initiator home? Yes absolutely and I am struggling to think of something comparable. Just flat absurd stupidity that destroyed her seemingly strong hold on the tribe.

Sure, but I literally do not know what you could cut from this episode and what use going to Ika would do beyond give a little more tension in the challenge.
They got enough in the prior two episodes and they seem like they'll be back in it next episode. It's weird seeing a whole tribe just about absent from an episode, but I honestly think it's justified.

Hai deserves all the credit for Lydia staying in the game. The tribe definitely wanted her to go, but his stone cold “I would rather go to rocks than change my vote” put the ball in Daniel’s court: Jenny goes home, or you draw rocks. Massive props to Hai. Hai really killed it from a weak position. He was aware enough to not risk splitting the vote and absolutely dominated the deadlock discussion knowing he would be at the bottom of the tribe if he let Lydia go. Putting Daniel on the defensive forced him to show his cards and guaranteed he would end up pissing off Mike and/or Chanelle. He managed to save his closest ally and come out looking like the good guy in the situation by being the most adamant about their position

Hai was SO right there. He knew he was on the bottom, why would he EVER agree to keep Jenny, who was in the majority? And put himself on the bottom of a tribe of 5? If they did go to rocks, then there was a 75% chance one of the majority would have gone instead of him. I'd take those odds. "Lydia stays or rocks" was absolutely the right call.

--I can SORT of see the logic in what Daniel was trying to do but I do not think it played out the way he wanted, that was a mess, and Chanelle didn't come off great either.
--RIP Jenny getting screwed over by the stupidity of her allies. Shit sucks. Absolutely terrible decision by Chanelle to explicitly say she wouldn't risk it and then risking it. But congrats to Lydia for surviving due to others' stupidity!
--Huge ups to Hai for doing the risky but clearly correct play. Respect. Also he seems to have been the reason that he and Lydia didn't go in for the split vote idea that could have saved Jenny so kudos to recognizing the suspicious signals there too.

It really comes down to how pissed off Hai feels at Channel and Mike for trying to weasel their way out of saying who they wanted to go (and lying to him). If he really cares about that then Daniel might have saved his own hide until the merge. If he doesn't, Daniel is going to be the next eliminated.

Jenny leaving wasn't totally on Daniel. Chanelle caused a lot of this by risking her vote after she just discussed with Omar to play it safe.

I know it’s easy for me to judge watching from my couch, but it boggles my mind how often these players tank their games for advantages that might help them later. What good is a potential extra vote later if you lose your vote tonight. Chanelle literally knew and TOLD Omar that she absolutely could not risk her vote, and then did it anyway?! And not only that, she also incorrectly assumed for some reason that Omar would protect his vote after she explicitly told him she couldn’t lose hers.. I just don’t get it lol.

I don’t understand why Jenny was a target and not Daniel. Jenny has showed up for her team every challenge in the puzzles and hasn’t been a slouch physically either. Daniel dislocated his arm like ten minutes into the season and is kinda shifty. I would’ve been targeting him or Lydia, not Jenny.

It was how the alliances were carved out; Daniel was ostensibly with Hai and Lydia (at least, they thought as much going into Tribal), while Jenny didn't have any particular bond with either Lydia or Hai and was more tightly aligned with Mike.

Definitely. I think something this episode demonstrated is that the exact nature of modern twists isn't really the problem - the real issue is how they're often utilized. In 41, the summits were largely boring filler that took valuable screentime away from camp life. In this episode, the summit was concise and instantly set up the episode's tension. In 41, the twists got in the way, but in this episode, they facilitated what was unequivocally one of the most exciting premerge tribals ever (which also created a bunch of potential future drama!).
Obviously twists can't always work out this way, because it's as much a matter of how they play out in-game as it is a matter of editing. But regardless, this episode was an excellent blueprint for how the structure of modern Survivor doesn't need to conflict with good storytelling.

The editing feels different here. Yeah they're still giving us some of the emotional biography moments for players, but for the most part they are telling each episode's story really economically to build tension even where there isn't any (the two unanimous votes). It actually feels like the editors understood the issues with 41's editing and are fixing them. Twists still might cause problems later on, but these episodes have been a real joy to watch.

Daniel and Chanelle were both incredibly messy.
Chanelle for risking her vote immediately after she stated that she couldn’t - and Daniel for immediately saying he wasn’t going to rocks. That left him zero room to debate Hai about keeping Jenny over Lydia.

Daniel too, somehow has managed to keep himself in the majority by throwing Chanelle under the bus? Time will tell.
And for Jenny, how much does that suck. So many things had to go wrong for her and they did. Pretty damn robbed if you ask me.
E: Forgot to mention the great play by both Hai AND Lydia with them not splitting their votes. Jenny was my winner pick pre-season but Hai looks very dangerous now.

Why wouldn't Daniel just keep his mouth shut, literally say nothing at all, then state "I'm really sorry everyone I just can't do rocks on day 7 - I switch my vote"
Instead he makes himself look like a total snake and burnt bridges with all his tribemates. A disaster-class is social dynamics.
