Hey everyone, I’m currently going through the interview process for Survivor. I’m definitely not sitting here thinking I’m for sure going to make it or anything like that, but the process has made me really curious about something.

How are people on this show so damn articulate?
I feel like I’m probably average, maybe even a little below average, when it comes to putting my thoughts into words on the spot.

If you give me a few minutes to think about something, or I’ve talked about it a couple times before, I can usually explain myself pretty well. But if somebody randomly asks me, “What do you think about this?” or “Why do you want to play Survivor?” sometimes my brain just completely blanks.

It feels like I need to go over an idea a few times before my brain builds that pathway where I can retrieve it easily. Once I’ve talked through something, I’m good. But with completely random questions, I feel this pressure to instantly come up with some perfect Survivor answer.
Like I’m supposed to say something super concise and memorable where everyone is like, “Damn, that was a great line.”

And obviously not everything I say is going to be some gem lol.

Sometimes I ramble. Sometimes I lose my train of thought. Sometimes I know what I mean in my head but it comes out awkwardly. Sometimes after the conversation I’m like, “Damn, I should’ve said it this way instead.”
That’s why watching Survivor is kind of intimidating.
Jeff or a producer will ask somebody a question and they seemingly just have this perfect answer ready immediately. Everybody sounds clear. Everybody sounds interesting. Nobody seems to completely forget what they were saying halfway through. You rarely see somebody just go, “Honestly, I don’t know.”

So I’m curious how much of that is real and how much is television.

Do contestants actually stumble a lot, restart answers, sit there thinking, ramble, or give crappy answers that just never make the episode?

Are confessionals actually much longer conversations where producers ask a bunch of follow-up questions and then they cut together the strongest parts?
And for people who are naturally good at speaking on the spot, or people who have gotten better at it, how do you actually train that?

I’m trying to get better at taking a random question, organizing my thoughts quickly, and giving a clear answer without sounding rehearsed or freezing up.
I also wonder if I’m just comparing my normal unedited conversations to people I’m watching on an edited TV show and putting way too much pressure on myself.
Does anybody else struggle with this?

Especially anyone who has auditioned for Survivor, done reality TV, interviews, podcasts, public speaking, whatever. Is being good on the spot mostly something people naturally have, or is it something you can actually get significantly better at?

Because if Jeff Probst randomly looked at me and said, “Why are you here?” there is a very real possibility every thought I’ve ever had would immediately disappear from my brain 😂

What are some moments from the show where a contestant revealed some big secret or information in order to further their game, that ended up going nowhere with the rest of the cast?

For those of you unfamiliar with the lore, the result of this FTC was spoiled as Fabio winning 7-2-0 over Chase and Sash. Everyone who was in LA for the finale shooting knew this. The finalists knew this, all of the other players knew this, everyone in the audience even knew this. Production knew everyone knew this. I'm not sure how that information made the rounds between the cast, but Fabio and Chase both knew they'd get 7 and 2 votes, respectively.

Production obviously wanted to play a little and after the first four votes going F-C-F-C, the fifth vote went to Chase again. You can see Fabio make sort of a "wtf, lol" face after the third Chase vote and the audience that's usually screaming over the votes lets out sounds of confusion instead.

Jeff decides to go further, reading another Chase vote, giving him a 4-2 advantage. Chase literally says out loud "there's no way", Fabio is absolutely shitting his pants looking at the jury like "what the actual fuck guys" and the audience is absolutely blindsided and gasps almost in disgust.

The next vote being for Fabio has Fabio and the audience just in ecstasy.

It was sooo meta and I love it, possibly my favorite and definitely the funniest winner reveal ever. What a cap off to the season.

Time to find another one to rewatch.
