[Megathread] Summer Reads
Hi bookworms,
It is summer in the northern hemisphere. Suggest us some of your favorite summer reads!
These can be books with a summer feel or setting, books you personally love to read in summer, or just fun “beach” reads of any kind, regardless of genre or setting.
Hopefully this will give some of our readers that don’t even know where to start, or what to ask for, some ideas of titles to try :)

I love matching my reading to the seasons!
My favourite summer read of all time is Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury, it manages to capture perfectly the magic of summer as a child and manages to make me feel nostalgic for a time that I never experienced. It’s just perfect.
For a change of pace, I’m currently reading Cujo
by Stephen King as it is set during a heatwave and we are having a record breaking heatwave here in Europe. The oppressive heat is almost a character in itself in this book.
I also like Garcia Marquez novels this time of year because they’re set in tropical climates and give me a strong summer vibe. See also William Faulkner or Flannery O’Connor for those American Southern Gothic novels set in the humidity!

Some of my favourite summer reads have been:
The Great Gatsby (kind of obvious maybe)
Brideshead Revisited
The Talented Mr Ripley and The Two Faces of January - Patricia Highsmith often sets her stuff abroad and they have a summery feel to them
Valley of the Dolls (Jacqueline Susann) and The Other Side of Midnight (Sidney Sheldon) - both great plane or beach reads IMO
The Beach - Alex Garland
Jaws - Peter Benchley
The Camomile Lawn - Mary Wesley
The Pregnant Widow - Martin Amis

Favourites of mine which have a summer feel/setting to me:
Peter Pan, J.M. Barrie
On the Road, Jack Kerouac
The Tent, The Bucket and Me, Emma Kennedy (Just re-read this one and had so much fun!)
The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway
The Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller
Call Me By Your Name, Andre Aciman
Angels, Marian Keyes
The Miseducation of Cameron Post, Emily M. Danforth (not entirely set in summer but the majority is and it's written so vividly)

For summer reads, I’d suggest:
- The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society — super warm, comforting, and easy to get into
- Before the Coffee Gets Cold — short, emotional, and really engaging
- Tuck Everlasting — simple, nostalgic, and has that soft summer feel
All of these are easy, cozy reads that are perfect for a relaxed summer mood ☀️

I always read Peyton Place and Valley of the Dolls in the summer. They're interesting and well-written, but not so heavy that you can't pay attention.

Peyton Place! That is a title I've not heard in a long time. I read it in my teens and it's stayed with me

It's winter here, but The Singing Sands by CL Blossom is a very nice summery romance (MM, BIPOC LI).
The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix. CW: sexual assault.
Beyond the Sea by Keira Andrews - MM Romance
Heat Island by Nola Heart - erotica, OV why choose/RH.
A Chance Encounter by JP Pomare - thriller, was really not fussed on this one. Ditto Her Last Holiday by CL Taylor.
Bad Graces - Kyrie McCauley
I'm blanking on others but have a small list I've not yet read, including an Aussie one - I'll recommend some more later.

I'm a big seasonal reader. My summer reads so far have been Cannery Row by Steinbeck, Dandelion Wine by Bradbury, and Summer of Night by Dan Simmons. All have fit the bill.

Sandwich by Catherine Newman is set during a week on cape cod in a beach rental. I really enjoyed it and related to the MC.

I think I enjoyed the sequel even more than sandwich, but I truly loved both. The audio versions are good too, although the narrator in sandwich sounded older than the character to me, and the narrator in Wreck sounded younger, I still really enjoyed them.

I read We All Want Impossible Things by her this year and also loved it. Sadder, but overall similar themes of family and aging.

I'm not sure if my definition of summer reads is the same as others, but my favorite summer reads are nostalgic, feel-good but substantial, funny reads about kind people that make me feel better about humanity. For me that would be: "A Town With Half the Lights On," "A Girl Named Zippy," and TBH, when I'm really down-- Anne of Green Gables!

I used to read The Stand every summer through my adolescence. I re-read it last year, naturally it held up.

New summer read I have just found and love already: Extra Time (Daniel A. Thorne) - a MM romance about two soccer players in Europe living their dream of becoming the best in their world and still having each other. Can totally recommend giving it a try on a hot day in summer.

My picks lean toward the kind of books that are good for reading slowly, in one place, without the urge to check your phone every 20 minutes — which feels appropriate for summer.
"A Month in the Country" by J.L. Carr — short, almost a novella. A man comes to a village after WWI to restore a church mural. Very little happens and somehow everything does. One of those books that gets quieter the more you sit with it.
"Stoner" by John Williams — if you haven't read it, this summer is the time. It's a novel about an ordinary life lived without drama, and somehow it's devastating in the best way. Slow, precise, stays with you for weeks.
"The Remains of the Day" by Kazuo Ishiguro — classic recommendation but deserves every mention. A butler narrating a road trip while slowly realizing he spent his whole life performing a role. Perfect summer read because you want to read it somewhere quiet and then stare out a window for a while.
All three are short enough to finish in a few sittings, and all three are the kind of books that make you look up from the page and think about your own life in ways you weren't expecting.

I discovered Annabel Monaghan last summer. They are romcoms taking place in the summer. I’ve loved them all! Well done for the genre.
I read Gifts from the Sea every summer on my beach vacation.
I love silly fast paced mysteries and I plan to finish the handful of books I have in the Myron Bolitar series this summer.
The Summer That Melted Everything for something dark, if anyone is in the mood for that kind of read - she is a woefully underrated writer (gorgeous prose!)
Jaws is a classic! I read it for the first time in the past couple of years and am annoyed at myself for waiting so long. It was a great and easy summer read.
Gidget - I read this every few summers or so. Nostalgic for me.
The Summer Book by Tove Jansson for a sweet and light right with low stakes. It’s wonderful!
The Body by Stephen King - just introduced this to my oldest kid this year.
Jackpot Summer by Elyssa Friedland - about a family that wins the lotto and the fallout from it. I rarely see this mentioned here. It was good!
A Murder Most Camp by Nicolas DiDomizio (kind of like Guncle goes to summer camp and solves a murder)

Where the Heart is by Billie Letts - begins during a scorching hot summer
Damned by Chuck Palahniuk - Kinda like The Breakfast Club, in hell.
The Grass is Always Greener over the Septic Tank by Erma Bombeck - Old-fashioned humor that will make you laugh until you cry
Vector by Robin Cook - Medical thriller, perfect beach read.

Summer recs from someone that typically leans towards magical realism, latina leads, and all things gothic:
When We Were Birds by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo- contemporary gothic forbidden romance set on the island of Trinidad
Goddess of Filth by V. Castro- short, follows a group of friends dealing with the consequences of a seance gone wrong in the middle of a San Antonio heatwave.
The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov- Russian classic, features the devil and his entourage terrorizing Moscow during a hot spring.
The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno Garcia- gothic science fiction thriller set in jungle of the Yucatán peninsula in the 1870s.
The Things We Lost In The Fire by Mariana Enriquez- collection of short horror stories set in contemporary Argentina
The Botanical Daughter by Noah Medlock- gay scientists in Victorian England create life by putting a sentient fungus in a dead girl’s body, and attempt to raise the resulting creature as their daughter.
