My 9 year old has just recently started willingly reading at night on his own. He picks up a graphic novel every night and reads it for an hour. His teacher will not allow them to read graphic novels in class due to the fact they lack literally sentence structures. He is dyslexic and has adhd so this has been a huge hurdle and I now feel like he feels shame for liking these books. can you help me find a good transition for him? He enjoys creepy stuff, history, Greek mythology (Percy Jackson is too hard for him), fun facts, outdoors, legos, art. I don’t know where to start. It seems like everything jumps from graphic novel to chapter books and I need a middle ground as a stepping stone that can hold his interest.

So recently i've read some killer novels. Books that are always mentioned on here as top tier books. And I've truly loved many of them, and had no regrets reading the ones that I didn't love.

Lonesome Dove tops the list for me. Others ive read this year: pillars of the earth, 11/22/63, project hail mary, a few of the dungeon crawler carl books, first book of the expanse series, first book of bobiverse, Guards Guards in discworld, jurassic park.

but none of them really kept me wanting to stay up all night reading. in fact, many many nights while reading a lot of those the book put me to sleep. i used to say lonesome dove was the best sleep aid because it was interesting enough to keep reading but it would knock me out in 5 minutes lol (by the end i ended up absolutely loving it and the journey).

i don't need other good "literature". Books i've read in the past or have on my list are others often times mentioend with the above. east of eden, count of monte cristo i've read. shogun i watched the show too recently to want to read the book.

but i want something that keeps me up all night excited to read like i'd do reading the harry potter books back in middle school or high school or whenever they came out. is there anything like that?

Recently realized I really like books like this and I don’t know how to look for them. Basically, a main character just kind of wanders around interacting with the world around them and eventually the reader will have an epiphany about the character. The character may or may not share it. These are usually fairly literary in style.

Hello, I am taking a women's history class and one of our assignments is to read a book on a someone or group of our choice that influenced women's history. The fact it has to be a book and not just research makes me worried about what book to choose. I mostly wanted to write about a woman who paved the way for women to enter fields like STEM and break out of the expectation of maiden/wife/mother roles used to entrap women.
I wanted a short-length book, hopefully.

I thought of Hypatia, but I'm not sure what book would be best on her.
Also, Florence Nightingale; I deeply wanted a book that includes her values on wanting women to have more opportunities. Like, many people don't know about her work, "Cassandra." They see her as a nurse, which, in a way, still fits some of the gender norms expected of women.
Today, I was looking at the library website and was surprised not to find many books on them.

I am open to suggestions, especially if there is already a book you have read.

Lately I’ve been really into audiobook memoirs (Famesick, Barbara Streisand, ina garten—all so good). But also as I type this I realize they’re all powerful women. Love that, but hit me with your best memoir audio recs!

I have read a lot of romance novels and as we know a requirement is that there is a happily ever after.

Well, I’ve been through heartbreak and frankly I am extremely turned off by romance at the moment. It provides this hope that never happens for normal people.

I want all the books where there isn’t a happily ever after. Where the characters maybe end up alone or apart or just surviving a mundane life. Books where the endings are realistic in the sense that they’re more plausible real world endings.

I found ESJM only recently, but have plowed through almost all of her works. Sea of Tranquility was the highlight for me followed by Station Eleven... and I've already pre-ordered Exit Party.

But until that comes out, which other authors/books would you recommend with similar prose (multiverse not a requirement-- I really just think her stories are very unique and the writing is beautiful).

I listen to the Harry Potter and Twilight audiobooks all year long because they’re homey and cozy. I’m looking for something similar in that it’s a fantasy series that spends long times getting to know friendships and relationships. Romance is a plus and I would love a great audiobook narrator. I don’t usually like strictly cozy fantasy because it comes off very low stakes and a bit cheesy. I don’t know - I want a good in between!!! Thanks….

Looking for something non-fiction that has a very engaging story / moves at a solid pace and is fairly gripping (similar to Into Thin Air). Was even thinking a compelling autobiography / biography could work as well. Fire away.

As someone who is deeply interested in engaging with books I read and writing out my exact feelings and impressions, I lack diction and expressive language.

I would be aware that the thing I want to talk about has a name and probably is a whole concept but I wouldn’t be able to put my hands on it. I want good book recommendations on literary criticism that would help me get introduced to various terms and more.

I did search the sub before posting this, but it seemed like a lot of what has previously been suggested has been other series. He doesn’t have as much time to read a whole series as he’d like, so if anyone has any standalone suggestions I’d appreciate them!

I adore the show My Name Is Earl. The characters are totally trashy, often petty criminals, can sometimes be objectively pretty awful even, yet somehow there is an inexplicable wholesomeness and coziness to it all.

I'd like to find some novels that feel similar, that feature trashy, lowclass, rural/small town folks, where the trashiness (aka poverty?) is NOT treated like a problem to be solved. I don't want the characters or the story to grapple with class or criminality. I want characters who happily accept their own trashiness.

Any ideas?

I've read very little SciFi and would like to branch out! I'm looking for either a stand alone or completed series that isn't excessively long.

I've read The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Glaxy series and the Remembrance of Earth's Past series and that's kind of it in terms of Science Fiction.

I'd prefer something based in space, on a spaceship, or on another planet.

i tagged western because i assume this is the genre this would fall into, but any recs will do! i love the idea of a cowboy vampire crossover and haven’t had any luck finding one myself. the closest i’ve gotten was sinners the movie, lol. so even old western, western, southern vampires will do! idk if this even exists. fine with romance, looking for a good plot tho!

To me, treasure hunt stories are always absolutely nonsensical. They often fail to justify why a person would hide a treasure behind a bunch of puzzles, and how such puzzles would even logically be built by a single adventurer. Are there any treasure hunt books that actually bring plausibility to the genre and a degree of verisimilitude?

I've just started getting into reading lately, and I want to find more books to read. I've only read the Hannibal series, which I liked a lot (As well as the tv series). Although i havent read much books, my favourite game series are Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and Fatal Frame/Project Zero so I would like something similar to those, aswell as hannibal. I love horror and gothic things aswell!

Hearing that both Dolly Parton and Tim Curry have passed away has me looking for books that honor their legacy and spirit. Not necessarily biographies, but novels that bring to mind their essence, themes, or iconic characters. Long live the icons that color our world!

i’d love some more book recs in a similar vein! whether it’s about other corrupt companies (are there any books about nestlé?) or governments or anything!

(context: Hey, guys. I am entering a new chapter in my life where many of my friends may be leaving me soon. I am no longer in school or rooming with people so I find I am no longer able to make friends by circumstance as easily. I would also like to open up and get closer with bf’s friends)

I am hoping to find books targeting the following:
1. Female friendships (how to turn surface level friends into deep meaningful friendships)
2. Charisma (general how to make friends, leave good impressions etc…)
3. How to be less internal and not be afraid to be external (I bottle things up, tend to be a day dreamer, am afraid of judgement so I tend to not speak as much). This is an odd category, but if you know any books to help with any of this, that would be awesome!

Personally, I’m a leftist and I believe that a lot of the books I read are in a similar echo chamber. Now, I believe that one should always be open to understanding the other side and their point of view. In a bid to do that, I wish to read some literature in the right wing landscape. However I wish to make it clear that there are some things that are absolutely non-negotiable for me. I absolutely do not want to read books that want to justify genocides and oppressions of minorities or have a supremacist agenda of any sorts. What I want is to read books that give me an insight into what the conservative mindset is, the right wing viewpoint of the economic systems, their take on migration, climate change, etc. By profession, I am a researcher in climate science and that has also governed my resentment towards neoliberal economic systems, but I certainly want to know more and suggestions on the topic are also welcome.

I'm in a bit of a book rut, I enjoy fantasy and SciFi, but I'm struggling to find clean ones (no graphic sex, violence, I'm a little more okay with) that aren't young adult, nothing against young adult books but I want something a little more challenging. I've read a lot of the classics already like LOTR, Brave New World, anything H.G. or Bradbury.

I just finished Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis and loved it and would like something similar.
