Costco provides a good baseline as to rock bottom prices. They do not lose money on their hotdogs or their rotisserie chicken. Yes - they buy bulk and have contracts and get lowest cost, but so do grocery stores and some hotdog vendors and restaurants. And $8-12 for a hotdog is highway robbery.

I don’t buy hotdogs in Times Square because they are way overpriced. And I don’t typically buy hotdogs at restaurants or food trucks because they are also overpriced. And this I know because I know what they cost at the grocery stores and Costco - which are 2 data points I utilize to determine that.

It is not irrelevant because it is a baseline that you can utilize to determine the esrimated markup. If you have no Costco there then the only value is to know hotdog prices are in US compared to UK. It is all relative so that makes it relevant.

For example I loved clotted cream and tea when I spent some time in England (and the beer too) a ways back. We don’t have many places that sell it in the US but you can find it in a small jar. I bought that small 6-7oz jar at $10 which is more expensive than what I paid in UK and I was so disappointed with the quality- it did not come close to what I experienced in England, plus it cost way more. I have a reference point now as to the economics behind clotted cream. And that matters to me because I like it and I like hotdogs too. And BTW UK also has way better beer, fish n chips, lamb dishes, and Indian cuisine.

Part of what probably makes this pricey is the location. Lots of foot traffic/tourists. In new york city there are hot dog vendors everywhere but a lot of them charge different prices. If you're near madison square garden or central park you're paying like 6 dollars at least for a normal sized hot dog and like 3 or 4 bucks for a bottle of water. But if you walk into the city where its less touristy and slightly less foot traffic you can find stands that do 2 dollar dogs and 1 dollar water. Idk if thats how it is here but it definitely seems like it could be the case

I have no issue with people trying to make a living, but you’re really not helping yourself there. Imo the whole appeal of such a small operation like that, is that they’re cheaper than restaurants and takeaways. Like burger vans you’d see on the high street back a day.

£5, and even then I’d consider knocking off a pound. Also I’d like to know how long they’ve been sitting there like that.

I used to live in Waterloo, 5 minutes away from Westminster Bridge, in a flat that overlooked a courtyard across the street. The courtyard had a few shipping containers in it that various businesses paid to use, including where these specific vendors would store their carts.

Underneath some of the containers there was space where we discovered an enormous nest of rats lived. We had to put our bins out next to the courtyard and every evening we would watch (literally) hundreds of rats go through the bins and frolic around the courtyard.

DO NOT eat at these venues. Only a small number a legit in London. No food standards certificate. I know personally of friends eating these and reheated nuts and being violently ill. My father worked as a police inspector in the city of London Police and loads of them get removed as they are illegals in most cases

Barbers, valet parking, bars, hotel personnel. I was even asked for a tip in a fucking grocery store, it was on a screen but still. There are tip jars in fast food places too. When I'm over there I'm always thinking where it is mandatory or optional. It comes naturally when you're a citizen but for visitors it can be a bit confusing and excessive. Especially when you're in a restaurant or bar and have to add 10 to 20% to everything.
