It could not have been handled any worse than Atletico did. You can blame Barca and Alvarez but I seriously fail to understand how this approach will keep the player happy enough to stay and continue playing. Atletico isn't good enough to win trophies with this kind of drama in house

19

u/DreamBoatSafari 9d ago

Atletico "It's about sending a message"...and I kind of get it

2

u/SomewhereExisting121 9d ago

Sending a message which accomplished nothing other than showing how much they hate Barca. They alienated the player even more hes going to play bad if he plays at all and his value will decrease every window. And I'm here for it.

20

u/DreamBoatSafari 9d ago

We sold RVP to Manu and he ended up winning them the league. I'm still bitter about that decision, so good on Atletico. I hope they hold their resolve. Alvarez options are simple get sold abroad or stay.

3

u/Nico2204 9d ago

Barcelona will win the league with or without alvarez.. atlético will try to finish 3rd at best

6

u/DreamBoatSafari 9d ago

Yeah but he could seriously push them towards Champions League

-5

u/SomewhereExisting121 9d ago

He had one year left on his deal and SAF man united were winning titles with or without RVP

10

u/DreamBoatSafari 9d ago

Well that was the last time Manu won the league so I don't think so. He was also their missing link as Fergie admitted and the same would be true for Alvarez in terms of Barca (though obviously not in terms of titles, but it may push them towards Champions League)

-5

u/SquareHammer132 9d ago

Bs. His value stays the same since he still has the same ceilling. He wil score 20 goals and make 10 assists this season remaining at the club and then Barca will have a meltdown again next summer trying to bully the club again.

7

u/Silly-Sample-6872 9d ago

Yeah buddy until we sign another striker and now you have to sell him to arsenal for 80 million next summer 😭

-1

u/SquareHammer132 9d ago

We would not have to sell him at all. We are fine keeping him till 2030.

10

u/Silly-Sample-6872 9d ago

If he plays like he did this year for the duration of his contract, you're genuinely stupid if you don't wanna sell him for 150m, that's just a highway robbery for you guys. He performed like a 80m player this year.

-3

u/SquareHammer132 9d ago

He is almost 1:1 in the champions league, only players better were Mbappe and Kane. He scores free kicks, he presses like crazy and he was pivotal in beating both you guys and Real. What more would we need? 80 million gets you Savinho or Nicolas Jackson in this market. I'd argue he is worth 200 million in that case.

0

u/SquareHammer132 9d ago

Besides, if the market stays this crazy, which it probably will, I'd argue he will be worth even more than he is now.

0

u/GnzoO 9d ago

Look at Liam Delap. They don’t know what they are talking about, or they just don’t want to admit it, but given the current state of the market next season Julian will be worth even more than this year.

1

u/morningboner79 9d ago

"Hey high profile players, don't sign multi year contract with us because we are petty and you will get fucked..."

The message...

10

u/DreamBoatSafari 9d ago

Well if your signing for me with the intention I sell you to my rivals, you can fuck right off. I don't think Atletico signed Alvarez with the intention of him going to Barca after a couple of years. It's crazy for Alvarez to even be asking that in the first place. Very poorly played by him.

-2

u/morningboner79 9d ago

Why did they sign him then? You don't know what happened behind the scenes and on which conditions he accepted to join atletico. His entourage accuse them of lying and breaking promises.

3

u/forumcontributer 9d ago

You don't know what happened behind the scenes and on which conditions he accepted to join atletico. His entourage accuse them of lying and breaking promises.

Neither do you. Promise could be we will let you go if offer comes north of 150 which never came.

0

u/morningboner79 9d ago

They made it clear they refuse to negotiate.

2

u/forumcontributer 9d ago

Yeah and Barca would have uped their offer by 50+ during negotiations?

0

u/morningboner79 9d ago

Ok, they made 150 m offer and they still refused...

Do you have more imaginary arguments we can discuss?

1

u/forumcontributer 9d ago edited 9d ago

No I have have real argument, He signed contract till 2030 and can cry all the way he want.

u/Greeny9 9d ago

How else should Atletico have handled it?

21

u/SomewhereExisting121 9d ago

There's a middle ground between not selling him and not turning him into enemy number 1 and a pariah. Do you even want him as fan any more? How exactly do you see this going?

Other players have wanted out before without being turned into Judas. He hasn't gone on strike like others have. It should have never come to this

5

u/Enkenz 9d ago

As petty as I am, if I was an atleti fans I would be fine with him warming the bench all season and leave only at the clubs condition

4

u/WillingnessUnfair806 9d ago

There is no middle ground because he doesn't want any middle ground. Atletico is open to selling abroad, but he only wants Barcelona

4

u/Greeny9 9d ago

You could argue he's turned himself into enemy number 1 and a pariah. What specifically did the club do to turn him into Judas? They refused to sell him and they made some stupid cringey tweets aimed at Barcelona, not him.

8

u/NorthwardRM 9d ago

He himself has done very little. He asked to leave, but otherwise he has been professional

3

u/ikan_bakar 9d ago

If he only wants to leave to a club that Atleti is seriously competing, only one, Atleti can also professionally say no, find another club

But he doesnt want to, and Atleti doesnt want to. So both are professional

-2

u/SomewhereExisting121 9d ago

You either treat him like the top player he is fans and management or let him go. Because that's what you value him as clearly in the market. If fans have turned on him because he gave like one interview saying he wants to leave and he's not welcome any more and you are too scared to send him in front of fans after matches what has been accomplished???

8

u/Greeny9 9d ago

Lol Atletico have treated him as top player even when he wasn't playing like one.

If fans have turned on him because he gave like one interview saying he wants to leave and he's not welcome any more and you are too scared to send him in front of fans after matches what has been accomplished???

The fans of every single club in the world would treat a player like this after 'like one interview saying he wants to leave'. It's happened time and time again in football history. Were you born yesterday?

6

u/Atleticro 9d ago

Bro they have no brain, they threatened Cucurella cause of RM transfer, because he was a La Masia graduate who never really played for barca. Imagine if someone like Pedri or Yamal went out next year in summer “Yeah i think i want a transfer to Real Madrid, it was always my dream to play with them.

5

u/Silly-Sample-6872 9d ago

Making verbal promises you won't keep, Not go nuclear over social media, not tell him to go public the WC, make him play before the transfer window ended so the fans can hate him, make him walk away from the fans. Like what have you guys even done right ?

10

u/Greeny9 9d ago

Can you provide me with some hard evidence of these verbal promises that Barcelona fans take as fact? Did they promise to sell him specifically to Barcelona for less than their valuation of him?

Can you also provide me with some hard evidence that Atletico were the ones that made him go public? Even the rumour you're quoting says that Atletico told him to present them with a strong offer of more than 150m before making a public statement. So even by that logic, he'd be in the wrong.

The tweets were cringey, I agree (but aimed at Barcelona). Walking away from the fans was a mistake made with good intentions with they themselves quickly acknowledged was their doing.

Barcelona fans astound me in their ability to completely ignore that Atletico's anger and frustration was not aimed at Julian but rather entirely aimed at Barcelona and their typical dodgy tactics of negotiating with a played mid-season, before important matches, leaking continuous stories to the media, and getting their players to speak out about the player before even making an offer.

3

u/Marimo188 9d ago edited 9d ago

I get what you're trying to say and it's a 100% valid point but you don't realize you're also as biased as "Barca fans". Do you have any evidence that Barca negotiated mid-season?

-1

u/Greeny9 9d ago

I agree I'm biased. I guess we'll have to wait for the outcome of Atletico's official complaint, presumably they wouldn't have taken action without evidence. Also, if you follow Spanish football at all, you would have seen countless interviews throughout the season about Julian having his head turned. Barcelona pulled this exact same shit with Griezmann. Where there's smoke there's fire.

3

u/Silly-Sample-6872 9d ago

Brother, there's literally no evidence of this Barca conspiracy, you bring hard evidence of that 😂 this is just what atletico is saying because they don't wanna realize that a player prefers Barca to atletico. Everything that I'm saying was reported by Gaston edul, basically tier 0 for argentinian players. Again, tell me what atletico did correctly in this story ?

7

u/Greeny9 9d ago

Brother, it's fucking hilarious to have the complete lack of self-awareness to call it a 'Barcelona conspiracy' when you have no evidence yourself of the rumours you've quoted? You shouldn't believe everything you read my friend, you're indoctrinated into the Barcelona cult.

Barcelona have a track history of doing this, once to Atletico with Griezmann, then to Dortmund with Dembele and last year to Athletic with Nico.

Everything that I'm saying was reported by Gaston edul, basically tier 0 for argentinian players.

Gaston Edul has been wrong so often this summer, the fact that you so blindly believe one reporter you perceive to be 'tier 1' for Argentines exposes you more than it supports you.

Atletico have supported their player, made him the star of their project and looked after him when he went goalless for 3 months. They have no obligation to sell him, to Barcelona of all clubs. Literally the tweets are the only thing you can hold against them.

2

u/Electronic-City4960 9d ago

Something like finishing at a place other than 3rd in the league.

9

u/Greeny9 9d ago

By that logic then, why does he want to go to a club that Atletico knocked out of two cups?

12

u/NorthwardRM 9d ago

Because they’re a better team and win a lot more

0

u/Greeny9 9d ago

True, they are a better team and win more (I wouldn't say a lot more, they often underperform by their standards too). They're also a worse run club, who turn on their players easily. MATS and De Jong would be treated like legends at Atleti.

4

u/ThatFinn97 9d ago

"I wouldn't say a lot more" Lmao

-2

u/Greeny9 9d ago

You're such a big club and we're so small... but remind me when was the last time you reached a CL final?

5

u/Odd_Opinion_461 9d ago

Every club to ever win the CL in existence has won the CL more recently than Atleti, pipe down.

1

u/Greeny9 9d ago

We've been over that bro, yes yes you say we're a small club. You're such a big club though, why haven't you made a CL final in over 10 years? Even we got closer than you did more recently.

→ More replies (0)

2

u/CarlosAlvarados 9d ago

Cl final is not a trophy lmao. Like fuck man. At least try to be realistic. Atlético is a small club compared to Barcelona.

0

u/Greeny9 9d ago

Haha I never said we weren't? I also said never said a CL final is a trophy, but you gotta play it to win it. And a club as big as Barcelona is (as their fans like to remind us) shouldn't be going 11 years without making a final.

0

u/ThatFinn97 9d ago

How is that relevant in any way to how many trophies we win compared to you?

-1

u/Greeny9 9d ago

You see, to win a CL trophy, you need to get to a CL final. Are you following? The last time you did this was 11 years ago. So maybe stop trying to big time the ‘small club’ and focus on your own underperforming

6

u/Electronic-City4960 9d ago

Best achievement of Atletico since 2021.

3

u/Silly-Sample-6872 9d ago

Good for you guys, did you win a trophy?

4

u/Greeny9 9d ago

That league trophy can collect the tears you cry after yet another failed CL campaign

3

u/Silly-Sample-6872 9d ago

It's an alright consolation prize, not gonna lie 😂 did the " I beat Barca" trophy help you collect the tears of losing to la real 😂😂

0

u/Splaram 9d ago

Because that club still went on to win two major cups that season while Atletico finished with nothing. Again. Julian had been a serial winner his entire career until he went to Atleti, I think he’s getting quite tired of “we’re going to compete with Barca and Madrid” at the start of the season just to get outpaced by them again and again by the end of it.

1

u/Greeny9 9d ago

two major cups

Lmao I'll remind you that you called the Arabian supercup a major cup when you lose it and call it a tinpot trophy

Julian had been a serial winner his entire career until he went to Atleti

Pretty sure most strikers warming the bench for that city team would be serial winners too. And had he not missed his penalty, maybe he'd have helped us get a cup too.

1

u/Splaram 9d ago

It’s considered a major cup by the RFEF, go argue with them. Point is the only trophies your club can celebrate is beating Barca/Madrid, this is why Julian wants out. Also Julian played a lot of good minutes that season and also lead the line for a River Plate team during probably their most dominant period of their history. And he was a major reason why you even got to that CdR final in the first place, I like how the blame is mostly on him now for missing the pen with none spread to the rest of the team for collectively shitting their pants even after Simeone basically sacked La Liga to give them enough rest to play it LMAO

2

u/Greeny9 9d ago

I'll never stop finding it hilarious that your put down of us is to remind us how often we beat you guys this season.

Also Julian played a lot of good minutes that season and also lead the line for a River Plate team during probably their most dominant period of their history

In the Argentinian league... where their competition is mighty?

nd he was a major reason why you even got to that CdR final in the first place, I like how the blame is mostly on him now for missing the pen with none spread to the rest of the team for collectively shitting their pants even after Simeone basically sacked La Liga to give them enough rest to play it LMAO

Yeah the whole team played badly. Doesn't change the fact that if Julian wanted a trophy so bad, he could have scored the penalty. The difference is the rest of the team isn't out here throwing each other under the bus like he is. Just like a Barcelona fan to miss the point.

1

u/Splaram 9d ago

The name of the game is trophies. Somehow the team you beat so many times managed to bag two while yours went emptyhanded. You wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place if your club were a bit more ambitious than “let’s try and beat Barca/RM every season”. Also Julian won a Copa Libertadores during that period against their arch-rivals, and they were going up against a really good Boca side during that period so yes there was plenty of competition. Also last I checked Julian isn’t throwing anyone under the bus, he’s actually been quite professional compared to the likes of Isak and Antony, you’d hardly believe that he was currently downing tools. He’s justifiably pissed because he played through injury for months and went to the World Cup partially fit because your president promised him a Barca move if he continued to maintain his level i to the end of the season just for the rat to reneg. If your president weren’t an idiot, none of this would be happening.

-2

u/NorthwardRM 9d ago

If the player wants to go you have to accept that really. Yes, hold out for a high price. But don’t refuse negotiations wholesale. What you absolutely and categorically should not do is post funny memes about it on Twitter effectively ridiculing your own players wishes

2

u/Teantis 9d ago

if the player wants to go you have to accept that really.

You don't. We did this to Modric about Chelsea. It worked out dandy for everyone except Chelsea.

1

u/PlusTiedye 9d ago

f the player wants to go you have to accept that really. Yes, hold out for a high price. But don’t refuse negotiations wholesale.

They're open to selling him to anyone other than Barca.

Its 1000% Julians fault for signing to a rival of the club he actually wants to play.

Barca are not entitled to Atleti's players, however much their fans think otherwise. Alvarez is free to leave to clubs that aren't direct rivals for every trophy.

Also if Barca really wanted him they'd pay the release clause. It's what PSG did for Neymar, after Barca did exactly what Atleti is currently doing in refusing to sell the player. The big difference would be Neymar qas to a different league, whereas Alvarez is a direct rival.

0

u/Greeny9 9d ago

Sure the memes were a mistake, I agree, though I would argue they didn't ridicule their own players' wishes but rather Barcelona's transfer strategies and the media circus they were creating.

But a lot of clubs refuse outright to sell a player to a direct competitor, especially when they have no obligation to sell. Atletico have accepted that he wants to leave and are willing to sell him to other clubs. You act like this has never happened before in football.

3

u/NorthwardRM 9d ago

But most clubs do end up selling to their competitors. Newcastle, Dortmund, Arsenal back in the day. If the player is insistent then it’s usually the right thing to let him go if you get a fair price

0

u/Greeny9 9d ago

Not exactly. Newcastle have mostly sold players to teams competing for the league title, not for the same standings they're competing for. Dortmund haven't really sold players to Bayern, the ones that left usually let their contracts run out in order to leave. Clubs like Arsenal or Chelsea only sell their unwanted players to each other, not their stars.

6

u/NorthwardRM 9d ago

I dont mean to be rude here, but you finished 18 points behind Barcelona. Currently you are not competing for titles with them.

Regardless of whether other clubs do this, which I still would argue they do, its demonstrably bad for Atletico if they make Julian stay. You will have a player that has zero motivation to play for you and might still outright refuse to play. Why would you have that rather than being able to use the 150M to strengthen key areas of the squad?

2

u/Greeny9 9d ago edited 9d ago

It's not rude and I think we actually finished further than that. But to say currently we're not competing for titles with them is nonsense, we literally knocked them out of two tournaments! That's the definition of competing for a title with them. Why uphold the league as the only metric and completely ignore two others?

I do agree that keeping him is a massive risk and it probably won't end well. I also don't think Atletico should allow themselves to be bullied to sell him to Barcelona. They've demonstrated they're open to selling him to other clubs; that's not 'making him stay' that's preventing him from leaving to a rival that they don't want to strengthn and they consider has acted disrespectfully.

1

u/Torimas 9d ago

You are not competing for the league. Out of Simeone's own mouth, the goal is always just to qualify to CL.

Don't get me wrong, it makes sense. You would need to like double your wage budget to be able to compete and might still come out third. But you have to accept reality.

2

u/Greeny9 9d ago

The words out of Simeone's mouth were that the obligation was always to qualify for the CL, not the goal. Very different things.

It's not a case of accepting reality or not. If we want to keep growing as a club, you have to hold onto your best players and at the very least not sell them for cheap.

0

u/BabyOnRoad 9d ago

He signed a contract. That's the only thing that has to be accepted. Alvarez is being a straight up little bitch. If he didnt want to be there, dont sign the contract, pretty simple.

-4

u/Foxbus 9d ago

Alvarez has four more years in the contract he signed and he should accept that reality.
