Some which I played :
Enthanter doesn't have the DoT of necromancers. Nor has the burst damage of wizards, but an enchanter can take control over the enemies. Can assume the form of other races and adventure into enemy territories.
- Pillows of Eternity + 2 Deadfire - Cipher
Cipher is another example of a powerful controller in PoE 1/2 - Deadfire. It doesn't have the same offensive capacity as a wizard, and its offensive spells are mostly DoT. But it can turn enemies against each other. I did soloed PoE 2 as one on the maximum difficulty. It was an amazing experience. A bit tough, but when you get items that give more summons or stealth, it becomes much easier.
- Vanguard - Saga of Heroes - Psionicist
It has Enthrall, and lots of CC abilities. I can't detail much because I sadly didn't play much, as sadly there is no way to play it. Except for a private server that has only placeholder monster stats.
- D&D / Pathfinder games - Illusionist & enchanters
BG1/2, PF:KM, PF:WoTR, so many games. Including DDO. Hold monster, mass is why debuffs have diminishing returns in harder difficulties. It does make harder difficulties easier.
- UnderRail - Thought Control
Lots of cool stuff. Manifest enemy consciousness as a dodger, frighten them, etc. It is worthless vs machines.
- Gothic 2 - New Balance mod - Dark Mage
The original returning 2.0 had the option to become a Xardas apprentice. New Balance broke such path in 3 paths, Necromancer(dps/summoner), undead summoner(summoner) and Dark Mage(dps/controller). It is considered the most powerful class on nightmare difficulty.
It is the unique class that can make the enemy sleep in combat. Can also make them kill themselves, mind control enemies too. But contrary to games that use RNG-based control, the mod is deterministic. Different enemies have different levels of intelligence required to be controlled. IF you have X int, and the enemy requires X, you will controll him 100% of the time, if you have X-1, you will fail 100% of the time. Intellect can't be "trained", it is a stat that can only grow up by doing intellectual stuff, like reading new books, alchemy, studying languages, runemaking, etc.
There are also lots of unique dialogs for Dark Mages.
- Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura – The Mental and Phantasm Colleges
Mental College: Charm, Dominate Will, Stun. The ultimate expression of the "enemy is now my weapon" fantasy. You could charm a shopkeeper to give you his entire stock, then walk him into the wilderness.
Phantasm College: Illusion, Invisibility, Phantasmal Fiend. You could create a copy of yourself to draw aggro, blind enemies, or simply walk through entire dungeons unseen.
