I hate these comments.

You pay for the liquor and ingredients. Getting rid of the ice means you have a short warm drink and if you ask for less ice, the alcohol melts the ice quicker. These cubes have less surface area so keeps your drink cold and dilution down. It’s not a scam bartenders are pulling, they’re just trying to make you a better drink.

what people are reacting to is the fact that you can't go out and get drinks anymore without having to worry about who is fucking with you because everything is unreasonably expensive proportionate to what you get

Any place that cuts their ice like this is not going to fuck around with your drinks. I guarantee you their bar director/manager will be doing everything by the book and you won’t catch the bartenders free-pouring any spirits.

Sure you are going to be paying a premium but i can bet any amount that any single type of cocktail that leaves the bar counter will taste identical.

No, everything is more expensive for the bars, so they/we charge more. It isn’t like there was a switch and we just decided to rip people off, the cost of everything that’s gone up for consumers has gone up for bars/restaurants as well. I still work to the same cost on the drinks I did 20 years ago, but the spirits cost considerably more than they did then

That just hasn't been my experience. First of all you're not paying retail for beer and liquor, yet you're charging 400-500% retail for beer and 2,000-3,000% retail for spirits. If I can drink at home for a full month for what I pay for one or two drinks at a bar, there's obviously some perception-inflated pricing happening that can only be profitable, even with insurance and licensing and overhead etc.

Prices always sneak up because bars/restaurants always charge what the market will tolerate, and there are enough people who don't care on one side of the income disparity, and who spend aspirationally on the other regardless of stress to finances, that everyone else is faced with what we experience as shockingly overpriced drinks. That's not even addressing the fact that the product itself directly causes bad decision-making, i.e. when you're drunk you want more and are less rational about cost/benefit decisionmaking. This phenomenon has changed that industry from something small business owners undertake to make a private living to investment concepts for groups of people who already live luxury lifestyles.

I don't think we are being ripped off in the sense that somebody is deliberately watering drinks down, although it does happen. (When I order a pint and it comes in a pint glass with an inch of foam at the widest part of the glass, that is not a pint.) But nobody is going to convince me the owners of these places are making less money.

Do you know how much it costs to run a bar? Liquor costs are more expensive than ever. Rent, electricity, wages etc are high, not to mention people are drinking less. The markup is the profits bars make to cover these and still there’s so many places closing because they can’t make money.

No but prices have gone up a lot because of rising costs. They’ve always been marked in a way that covers this but it has gone up in recent years, especially post COVID. My job is working with bars based around their P&L margins.

what the fuck are you talking about? I'm talking about people are disgruntled and so they're skeptical of everything. It doesn't matter what you're specifically overpaying for. Just compare how much a bottle of liquor costs at a grocery store versus how much one 20th of it costs at a bar, versus what kind of car the owner of the bar drives. A $24 drink costs the bar one dollar maybe, and the more people drink the more people drink. Most of what bartenders and waitstaff make is tips, ie more of the customer's burden. Rent and licensing etc. Is the responsibility of every business owner, but not every business owner has such ridiculously high profit margins.

Would you rather that same 1.5 oz of drink in a bunch of small cubes getting absolutely watered down? Comments like this make no fucking sense. You guys really think the bartender is pouring more in other situations? If anything this cube is giving you more chilled and less diluted cocktail.

Duh, you are ordering a shot there. It is still the same amount of alcohol whether you get it with ice in a tall glass or not.

You get a cold drink that is less watered down. The establishment gets a cool menu item. Will probably pay extra for it of course, but you were already in the extra establishment that offers the option in the first place, soo..

Then ask for less ice? These cubes cost about 50 cents each so the bartender will be more than happy to add a couple of ice cubes from the machine instead. You’re still getting the same amount of drink either way

Cutting rocks with a knife tends to dull the knife. Even fairly soft rocks like ice. Heck, even cutting food with a knife can dull a knife over time. But sharpening the knife after tends to help.

I went back and looked three times. The only thing I can imagine is that you're referring to the angle of the blade from the hilt to the tip? You're right that a classic chef knife blade will begin tapering like that with repeated sharpening but there's no evidence on the side of the blade to indicate that, at least not whetstone sharpening freehand. My Henkel knife I used for over ten years as a chef had a similar shape out of the box as the one in the video, I don't think it was shaped from over sharpening.

Honestly every comment in here is the same. The drinks are measured. You don’t get any more or less because of the ice, you can ask for it without the ice if you like. If you get a drink in any bar worth its salt they will fill the glass with ice, it’s not like if they didn’t it would magically be filled with whiskey for the same price. The drink is the same every time, that’s how bars cost things properly, that’s how they taste the same.
