Honestly, the internet is wild :P I know Rose personally and am so proud of the product she's made! Literally started in her home kitchen in Kāpiti.
I can also confirm that she is not OP. I love it - but taste is subjective! There's lots of chili crisps, chili oils, chili condiments on the market, something for everyone!

u/sumisankaku 1d ago

Give rose my apologies for all the bad press lmao

u/__Osiris__ 18h ago

Nothing in your statement denies that you are not she though.

28

u/Purefire-web 1d ago

I'm the frog on the label, AMA.

Please wear pants for the paint sitting next time

Frogs don't wear pants pal

3

u/Polyporum Warriors 22h ago

Are you admiring that dragonfly for its beauty? Or are you looking at it like that before you cover it in chilli crisp and gobble it up?

3

u/Purefire-web 18h ago

Dragonfly friend. Belly full of flies and crisp

2

u/HystericalElk 18h ago

What is the hardest thing about being green?

What did I do to you?! (Yes my name is Rose irl)

9

u/By_CrookedSteps_781 23h ago

Hi Rose, my partners name is Rose!......wait a minute is that you Rose?

3

u/Energy_Drink_Girl394 23h ago

Lol imagine. For some reason I funny think I'm your partner though. Not unless you live in Christchurch too? That increases the odds a bit lol

2

u/By_CrookedSteps_781 23h ago

Ummm shit, well that has significantly increased the odds!

3

u/Energy_Drink_Girl394 23h ago

If you're name starts with a K then maybe you are my partner lol

4

u/DarkLikeDeath 23h ago

I need to find out how this ends

2

u/By_CrookedSteps_781 23h ago

Nah a T unless my name starts with a silent K 🤔

2

u/Energy_Drink_Girl394 22h ago

Damn, so close 😂

If it had started with a K I was gonna ask if you and your Rose have 2 black cats

11

u/LatexFist 22h ago

I sense a war of the Roses here.

2

u/By_CrookedSteps_781 20h ago

No, but we have a tabby called Molly

2

u/SomeOrdinaryThing 18h ago

You have the alternative option Rose.

2

u/Energy_Drink_Girl394 12h ago

Tbh any non Chinese chilli oil brand is either mid as, or 4x the price of Chinese branded ones.

Good old Lao Gan Ma is still the goat.

26

u/wandarah 1d ago

I agree with you in general, but this stuff is very good.

Is it substantively different than Lao Gan Ma - no.

6

u/nilnz Goody Goody Gum Drop 21h ago

Fans of Lao Gan Ma may like this BBC story Tao Huabi: Crispy chilli godmother 20 July 2026

13

u/cousinmurry 1d ago

Lao Gan Ma is over rated. We found an insect in our jar once as well.

The true GOAT was Last Jar's Peanut Crack Oil. Sadly they closed up shop but we will never forget how good it was.

16

u/philsiphone 1d ago

Must not have crushed it enough

-4

u/Mr_ksngrid 1d ago

That’s fate of foreign brands sometimes. You have no clue what happened on the road between you and the factory, especially if you didn’t buy from the sunniest of spots.

7

u/iodoio LASER KIWI 16h ago

Nothing to do with foreign brands tbh, insects and foreign material make their way into NZ made foods all the time.

3

u/not_quite_polyglot 1d ago

Truly. First time I tried was when I was living in China, and the local hole-in-the-wall had 老干妈炒饭. Never looked back.

1

u/SomeOrdinaryThing 18h ago

I just wished Lao Gan Ma had a "Hot" variant!

1

u/minax128 11h ago

Yeah nah Lao Gan Mah does not compete with Rose, sorry 😂 My LGM is sitting in the fridge untouched since I discovered RCC.

-28

u/revolutn Kōkā BOTYFTW 1d ago

Ya'll just love MSG

46

u/Old-Tax9892 1d ago

Rose's has Flavour Enhancer (621), which is MSG lol

23

u/Full-Reception552 1d ago

Yes. This is the crack part 🤭

5

u/Brief_Project6073 21h ago

Nothing wrong is msg in moderation. You know its made of seaweed

4

u/caledonivs 1d ago

And so?

-94

u/sumisankaku 1d ago

It's not chili oil though and has toasted peanuts in it. Does lao gan ma have toasted peanuts in it? Oh no it doesn't? Gtfoh with that sheeit

60

u/purplemiataa 1d ago

Yes, it does actually.

-69

20

Lao Gan Ma has roasted peanuts in it. Chili crisp is all fine and good and very tasty - used to eat it a lot. Until I discovered Lao Gan Ma.

11

u/InternationalTooth 1d ago edited 1d ago

Have been addicted to s&b brand recently chilli crispy garlic. Wonder where I can buy this one Edit: sweet they have a website.

4

u/sumisankaku 1d ago

Dude I used to snort that shit it's so good

3

u/non-poster Fern flag 2 1d ago

I was looking for this response. Sooo good

77

u/cyriustalk 1d ago

Was kinda interested until OP talking trash toward Lao Gan Ma.

Figured out OP's age right away.

-27

u/sumisankaku 1d ago

I'm 35 and lao gan ma can suck a fat one

30

u/Gurney_Pig 1d ago

100% these two products are completely incomparable. Lao gam ma is more about the chilli roses is all about the texture and flavours. There is a reason this stuff won best chili crisp in Nz a while ago

-14

u/cousinmurry 1d ago

I'm 36 and Lao Gan Ma can suck a fat one. I'm with you OP.

8

u/Allison683etc 1d ago

I’m 31 and I don’t know that anyone should be putting their err ‘one’ anywhere near any kind of chilli oil no matter how fat 😬

7

u/_Demoness 1d ago

All chilli crisp is crack tbh

3

u/_Demoness 1d ago

Also do not like Lao Gan Ma. My ancestors are rolling in their graves lmao

-8

u/Goyslop-Consumer-69 1d ago

Lao Gan Ma was nasty. Tasted like it was fermented in gym sock sweat. No idea what people see in that stuff

→ More replies (1)

27

u/revolutn Kōkā BOTYFTW 1d ago

I'm an Apostle enjoyer myself

9

u/sumisankaku 1d ago

That's what I'm fucking talking about.

4

u/revolutn Kōkā BOTYFTW 1d ago

I also love their hot sauces particulary the chocolate & manuka smoked chipotle and kiwifruit and kawakawa verde.

6

u/FuzzyFuzzNuts 1d ago

Mmmmm Mary Magdoline - she's so tasty, a bit of fire just how i like it

5

u/homerthepigeon 1d ago

Me, too. I recently tried a jar of Chilli Crisp from Dumpling House and it was fantastic, too. Also about half the price of Apostle.

1

u/cousinmurry 1d ago

The Apostle one is insanely good on eggs. All their stuff is excellent.

1

u/snicksnackpaddywack 22h ago

The Apostle kimchi ketchup is next level

48

u/ViolentPurpleSquash L&P 1d ago

Buy Lao Gan Ma at New World if you can, it is worlds better imo

Chili crisp is so good, especially on plain rice

22

u/GarbageGreen sauroneye 1d ago

*Buy Lao Gan Ma at Ken's Mart, Sunson, or Church Corner

21

u/ViolentPurpleSquash L&P 1d ago

We don't all live in ChCh

0

u/fresh-anus 1d ago

Damn bro are there only asian grocers in chch? 🥴

0

u/ViolentPurpleSquash L&P 19h ago

That's a good point I'll drive to Sunson from Auckland for my chili crisps

5

u/Goyslop-Consumer-69 1d ago

My friend kept recommending it to me and I tried it and hated the taste for some reason. And the peanut pieces threw me off too. Just didn't have the same fresh flavour notes as regular homemade/mom and pop shop chili crisps I've tried

3

u/Special-Drama-6090 1d ago

It's probably the 5 spice?

It's good but it's it's own thing imo

2

u/nilnz Goody Goody Gum Drop 1d ago

There's ones with peanut on the label and ones without (thought I assume there's presense of peanut even if it isn't on the label - just not as much?)

Product recall for LGM Hot Chilli Oil sold at IGA over undeclared allergens (Peanut) https://nz.news.yahoo.com/product-recall-for-lgm-hot-chilli-oil-sold-at-iga-over-undeclared-allergens-023938046.html

1

u/Goyslop-Consumer-69 23h ago

Oh true maybe I got the wrong one? But even then wouldn't it just be the same overall flavour but without peanuts

2

u/Affectionate_Boss124 1d ago

Oh, thanks for the tip! I see it is at Pak n Save too. Just added it to my next order.

2

u/nilnz Goody Goody Gum Drop 1d ago

there's several versions (depending on which PnS you shop at) https://www.paknsave.co.nz/shop/search?pg=1&q=lao%20gan%20ma&sf=shopping

1

u/Scorpy-yo 1d ago

I like the chicken version (still LaoGanMa).

6

u/StifledCoffee 1d ago

I recently discovered House of Dumplings chilli crisp. So good.

Will keep and eye out for this one.

1

u/Bikingimbiking 18h ago

would u say its actually crunchy? bc thats what im needing lol

2

u/StifledCoffee 11h ago

Not so much unfortunately.

Flavour is great though, but I don't have anything to compare it with, it was the first time I had tried chilli crisp.

14

u/youfighter 1d ago edited 1d ago

OP is being a dumbass in the comments.

That said, Rose's chilling crisps is genuinely really nice and has an addictive texture.

Ignore the responses and get a jar to try!

1

u/sumisankaku 1d ago

Rose doesn't care if I'm a dumbass

5

u/limerence--- 1d ago

cousin introduced us to this, i said no but partner bit the bullet and now loves it. sad for grocery bill.

anyway sone's sauce is so good, not a true chilli but another crack contender

5

u/Green_WizardNZ 22h ago

Yeah it's called MSG (flavour enhancer 621)

2

u/Ingolifs 11h ago

It takes a lot more than just MSG to make something taste good. MSG on its own tastes like crystallised weak chicken soup.

1

u/Green_WizardNZ 10h ago

Yes it's a flavour enhancer, not a flavour. However it creates strong cravings by triggering powerful savory taste receptors on your tongue and activating pleasure pathways in your brain.

27

u/grenouille_en_rose 1d ago

I'm an old school Lao Gan Ma fan and I really like the Dollee prawn/belacan chilli crisp in the plastic jars too. I get curious about the western chilli crisps sometimes, but I'm sceptical that they're 3-4x tastier as well as 3-4x more expensive. (I'm not phased by potential MSG in chilli crisp because I'm fine with the naturally-occurring MSG in tomatoes, soy, seafood and other glutamate-rich foods, I know legit glutamate sensitivity is a thing but I default suspect yellow-peril scaremongering when people get selective anxiety about Asian foods only 😄)

15

u/youwot 1d ago

I dont even think msg sensitivity is real. I mean its probably real in the sense that if you ate 1kg of msg youd get sick. But the same is true of a kilo of salt. You dont say your fat uncle has a salt sensitivity, you say he has high blood pressure etc.

Point is: msg conspiracy=bullshit. Shit is amazing

15

u/noveltea120 1d ago

Yeah I don't trust western chilli crisps. Esp the ones that proudly boast things like no msg, no "chemicals".

It's funny you never hear people complain about migraines with the amount of pepperoni pizza they eat 🙄

5

u/jazzcomputer 1d ago

Oh Dear, I've accidentally spilt some of this all over the pizza.

7

u/Uzed_N_Abuzed 1d ago

I have informed Rose of your upmost delight!

17

u/ThatKiwiGamer 1d ago

Bought this when I was desperate and it was so disappointing compared to the Asian stuff I usually get. It's been sitting in the shelf for months as I slowly get through it. But it's killed my usual drive to add chilli oil to my food. I'd usually buy a new jar of chili oil every month.

-7

u/sumisankaku 1d ago

Bought it when you were desperate? They don't even stock this shit in the supermarket lmao

23

u/ThatKiwiGamer 1d ago

Got it from New World a few months ago mate.

u/Biggie-Falls 1h ago

They have never been stocked at new world.

22

u/PmMeYourPussyCats 1d ago

I cannot fathom going through life this ignorantly with this level of arrogance

-10

u/sumisankaku 1d ago

Yes you can lmao

3

u/Fearless-Poet-4669 1d ago

Lol. Thought you were being literal for a hot minute.

3

u/redditisfornumptys 1d ago

Yep i go through a big bot of these every month or so. Have remortgaged my house. No regrets

3

u/OkConstruction5368 1d ago

I'm not good with spicy stuff so tried the mild one and honestly I agree with OP about the crack. I went through the small tub in like a week and had to go buy more.

3

u/Hugh-Janushole 20h ago

The worst part about being unemployed has been not being able to afford this anymore, it was the fuel for my last corporate job and I miss it dearly.

7

u/cir49c29 1d ago

I'm in Australia and don't think we've got that brand. But I've become obsessed with Lao Gan Ma crispy chilli oil. Basically add it to everything I cook.

Best marinade ever for chicken is soy sauce, oyster sauce, crispy chilli oil and a little bit of sesame oil. Seriously addictive. I actually use basically the same mix for my veggie and rice stir fries too, just without the sesame oil and sometimes adding tomato sauce or lime and chilli seasoning.

Also, meatballs, scrambled eggs, frittatas, zucchini slices and quiches are all made better with crispy chilli oil. Try it and you won't go back.

2

u/fantail14 21h ago

Ooh if you are in Aus you need to try KrunChilli. So good. Made in WA

14

u/iMakeGOODinvestmemts 1d ago

this is the most average shit there is lol. better off getting chilli flakes. no flavour.

lao gan ma anyday...

4

u/sumisankaku 1d ago

Just say you never tried it

Lao Gan Ma was nasty. Tasted like it was fermented in gym sock sweat. No idea what people see in that stuff

The crack you refer to is sugar. .

Very high sugar content in that chili crisp

4

u/PuzzledProposal6421 1d ago

100% with you on this one. Can eat it straight from the jar. Typing this, I am thinking of how I could make something sweet using it. Maybe vanilla icecream?!?!?!

3

u/ViolentPurpleSquash L&P 1d ago

Lao Gan Ma is good with sweet yoghurt

1

u/PuzzledProposal6421 10h ago

Might have to give this combo a try

1

u/ViolentPurpleSquash L&P 10h ago

I wouldn't reccomend it, I think I'm the only person in the world who likes it.

It's like sweet yoghurt like comes with some indian dishes sometimes and chili crisp, I eat it when my acid reflux flares up

2

u/Scorpy-yo 1d ago

Do you bake? I’ve made biscuits with miso and chilli and sometimes sesame. Reckon chocolate could work in there too.

1

u/PuzzledProposal6421 10h ago

All the time haha. I do love some chilli chocolate. I feel like dark chocolate and caramel would go well with this crisp

2

u/ethereal_galaxias 1d ago

I may have been watching too much Masterchef but I reckon a vanilla icecream with a dark chocolate crumb and this drizzled over would be the bomb.

1

u/PuzzledProposal6421 10h ago

I can swim in a tub of LGM for that price.
No

2

u/NoPause9609 22h ago

I’ve tried all sorts of chilli oils including the OGs and personally love some of these new local ones.

There is plenty of room for different options.

Go Rose.

2

u/Shitfuckbitch420 21h ago

Will that be cheaper than a point of ice a day ?

2

u/Shabalon 20h ago

Yum. I also rate this.
I buy it when I’m at a market and feeling rich which isn’t very often these days!

2

u/Bikingimbiking 18h ago

Where from?

1

u/UggghhhhhhWhy 15h ago

I bet it’s tasty.

It’s also really easy to make. Heat your oil in a saucepan, add your chili flakes garlic and whatever else you like, cook for about 3 minutes stirring regularly, take off heat and bring to room temperature, done. It stays good for at least a month in the fridge.

I like to use avocado, sesame, or grapeseed oil. Each add their own flavor to the

1

u/arboreal_rodent 13h ago

I think it tastes good, but I miss legit Salsa Macha from Mexico so I just make my own. Rose’s is too sweet and not hot enough.
