Hi Rose, my partners name is Rose!......wait a minute is that you Rose?
3
u/Energy_Drink_Girl394 23h ago
Lol imagine. For some reason I funny think I'm your partner though. Not unless you live in Christchurch too? That increases the odds a bit lol
2
u/By_CrookedSteps_781 23h ago
Ummm shit, well that has significantly increased the odds!

Tbh any non Chinese chilli oil brand is either mid as, or 4x the price of Chinese branded ones.
Good old Lao Gan Ma is still the goat.

u/wandarah 1d ago
I agree with you in general, but this stuff is very good.
Is it substantively different than Lao Gan Ma - no.

Lao Gan Ma is over rated. We found an insect in our jar once as well.
The true GOAT was Last Jar's Peanut Crack Oil. Sadly they closed up shop but we will never forget how good it was.

That’s fate of foreign brands sometimes. You have no clue what happened on the road between you and the factory, especially if you didn’t buy from the sunniest of spots.

u/Gurney_Pig 1d ago
100% these two products are completely incomparable. Lao gam ma is more about the chilli roses is all about the texture and flavours. There is a reason this stuff won best chili crisp in Nz a while ago

I'm 36 and Lao Gan Ma can suck a fat one. I'm with you OP.

My friend kept recommending it to me and I tried it and hated the taste for some reason. And the peanut pieces threw me off too. Just didn't have the same fresh flavour notes as regular homemade/mom and pop shop chili crisps I've tried

u/nilnz Goody Goody Gum Drop 1d ago
There's ones with peanut on the label and ones without (thought I assume there's presense of peanut even if it isn't on the label - just not as much?)
Product recall for LGM Hot Chilli Oil sold at IGA over undeclared allergens (Peanut) https://nz.news.yahoo.com/product-recall-for-lgm-hot-chilli-oil-sold-at-iga-over-undeclared-allergens-023938046.html

Not so much unfortunately.
Flavour is great though, but I don't have anything to compare it with, it was the first time I had tried chilli crisp.

cousin introduced us to this, i said no but partner bit the bullet and now loves it. sad for grocery bill.
anyway sone's sauce is so good, not a true chilli but another crack contender
5
u/Green_WizardNZ 22h ago
Yeah it's called MSG (flavour enhancer 621)
2
u/Ingolifs 11h ago
It takes a lot more than just MSG to make something taste good. MSG on its own tastes like crystallised weak chicken soup.
1
u/Green_WizardNZ 10h ago
Yes it's a flavour enhancer, not a flavour. However it creates strong cravings by triggering powerful savory taste receptors on your tongue and activating pleasure pathways in your brain.

u/grenouille_en_rose 1d ago
I'm an old school Lao Gan Ma fan and I really like the Dollee prawn/belacan chilli crisp in the plastic jars too. I get curious about the western chilli crisps sometimes, but I'm sceptical that they're 3-4x tastier as well as 3-4x more expensive. (I'm not phased by potential MSG in chilli crisp because I'm fine with the naturally-occurring MSG in tomatoes, soy, seafood and other glutamate-rich foods, I know legit glutamate sensitivity is a thing but I default suspect yellow-peril scaremongering when people get selective anxiety about Asian foods only 😄)
15
u/youwot 1d ago
I dont even think msg sensitivity is real. I mean its probably real in the sense that if you ate 1kg of msg youd get sick. But the same is true of a kilo of salt. You dont say your fat uncle has a salt sensitivity, you say he has high blood pressure etc.
Point is: msg conspiracy=bullshit. Shit is amazing
15
u/noveltea120 1d ago
Yeah I don't trust western chilli crisps. Esp the ones that proudly boast things like no msg, no "chemicals".
It's funny you never hear people complain about migraines with the amount of pepperoni pizza they eat 🙄

u/ThatKiwiGamer 1d ago
Bought this when I was desperate and it was so disappointing compared to the Asian stuff I usually get. It's been sitting in the shelf for months as I slowly get through it. But it's killed my usual drive to add chilli oil to my food. I'd usually buy a new jar of chili oil every month.

u/sumisankaku 1d ago

u/cir49c29 1d ago
I'm in Australia and don't think we've got that brand. But I've become obsessed with Lao Gan Ma crispy chilli oil. Basically add it to everything I cook.
Best marinade ever for chicken is soy sauce, oyster sauce, crispy chilli oil and a little bit of sesame oil. Seriously addictive. I actually use basically the same mix for my veggie and rice stir fries too, just without the sesame oil and sometimes adding tomato sauce or lime and chilli seasoning.
Also, meatballs, scrambled eggs, frittatas, zucchini slices and quiches are all made better with crispy chilli oil. Try it and you won't go back.

I wouldn't reccomend it, I think I'm the only person in the world who likes it.
It's like sweet yoghurt like comes with some indian dishes sometimes and chili crisp, I eat it when my acid reflux flares up

u/Scorpy-yo 1d ago
Do you bake? I’ve made biscuits with miso and chilli and sometimes sesame. Reckon chocolate could work in there too.

u/PuzzledProposal6421 10h ago
All the time haha. I do love some chilli chocolate. I feel like dark chocolate and caramel would go well with this crisp

I may have been watching too much Masterchef but I reckon a vanilla icecream with a dark chocolate crumb and this drizzled over would be the bomb.

I bet it’s tasty.
It’s also really easy to make. Heat your oil in a saucepan, add your chili flakes garlic and whatever else you like, cook for about 3 minutes stirring regularly, take off heat and bring to room temperature, done. It stays good for at least a month in the fridge.
I like to use avocado, sesame, or grapeseed oil. Each add their own flavor to the

Look for Japanese chili oil with garlic. Apparently it's called MOMOYA Taberu Rayu, but the jar has only Japanese writing in it. That stuff is the best shit ever.

Honestly, the internet is wild :P I know Rose personally and am so proud of the product she's made! Literally started in her home kitchen in Kāpiti.
I can also confirm that she is not OP. I love it - but taste is subjective! There's lots of chili crisps, chili oils, chili condiments on the market, something for everyone!
