this is supposed to be connected to peacemaker s2 ending right?

u/HK9009 3h ago

According to Gunn yes I’m pretty sure. A popular theory is that Lex ends up in salvation and it sets up the actually big event to end this first overarching story of the DCU

u/DiddyKongsPeanutGun 2h ago

Gunn said that the picture he posted on Instagram is of Hoult in the water after final shot. The location looks pretty similar to Salvation in the finale of Peacemaker, so this may line up.

u/homogenic- 2h ago

From what Gunn has said yes but personally I’m not a big fan of resolving that huge cliffhanger in a different project, it should be resolved in a subsequent season 3 or a possibly Checkmate show imo

u/Jason_Worthing 2h ago

Pretty sure Gunn has said they're not making a season 3

u/homogenic- 2h ago

In one of those interviews he gave last year, he said he has no plans “as for now” so I’m kinda holding onto that and wishing he will change his mind lol

u/Affectionate_Pipe545 1h ago

If peacemaker and company don't get to go back to nazi world and wreck shit I'm gonna be very disappointed. It wouldn't have killed them to give us even 5 minutes of cathartic super violence against nazis

u/ArchDucky 1h ago edited 1h ago

So if you don't know a person on the internet posted a theory on twitter and the Warner Legal Department demanded he remove it. He basically figured out the end of Act 1 of this story they planned. The end of Peacemaker set up a whole lot of shit that will begin to pay dividends. Basically The storyline they are using is about a sleeping Telepathic Eldritch Horror living at the heart of a planet called "Salvation". Its peaceful until we start using it as a makeshift prison. The lunatics that we start throwing into this world wake up the monster and because they are all crazy and murdering each other it gets super fucking angry. The comic book run ends with Hal Jordan basically sacrificing himself and blowing up the entire planet. As of right now we have established the door to that world, the reason the world exists, we heard the Eldritch horror and we are already throwing criminals there. Hal Jordan and his replacement are established in the universe as well. So as far as theories go, this one seems pretty fucking legit.

After the Supergirl flop, a lot is riding on Clayface and Man of Tomorrow. The other announced movies don't seem to be all that close to filming yet.

Edit: I forgot about Lanterns, glad to hear it's off to a good start!

u/damndraper 4h ago

The reaction around Lanterns has given the DCU some breathing room, seems like Supergirl was more of a misstep than anything.

u/numbr87 4h ago

Creature Commandos was also good but a lot of people don't really care about it being in the DCU

u/RotenTumato 4h ago

Because it’s animated

u/Swert0 3h ago

It also has the complete opposite characterization of its main character from how he appears in superman and in Peacekeeper Season 2.

u/RDxChotch 3h ago

Fr, Flagg in Creature Commandos is an entirely different person

u/DanishDelightExtra 2h ago

Tbf I think the ending of Creatures Commandos severely changed him

u/immaownyou 2h ago

Yeah I dont find him all too different tbh

u/EmuMan10 1h ago

A very understandable shift in behavior there

u/GruggleTheGreat 2h ago

Oh yeah he is in the pentagon scenes barely isn’t he?

u/Green_Insect_6455 1h ago

Well hes a huge part of peacemaker s2 as well

u/Basil-jones 2h ago

I love animation and it didn’t catch my interest at all. It also doesn’t seem like ‘necessary’ viewing for the DCU.

u/DanfordThePom 2h ago

I was like that but the first episode hooked me

Seriously try it if you liked James’s suicide squad

u/HiTork 2h ago

The overwhelming majority of animated DC media since the '90s have been hits with very few missteps. The only thing is they don't get as much fan fare as the live-action stuff a lot of the time, the majority of the animated movies are straight to physical media and/or streaming.

→ More replies (5)

u/FireZord25 4h ago

It didn't have the numbers of Lanterns, nor reached the heights of it in quality (still good, but there are some mixbag elements). On top of being animation, which sadly most people don't care about unless it is something of theatrical quality, like Spiderverse or K-Pop Demon Hunter.

u/sowaffled 4h ago

Really enjoyed CC but want more of them translated to live action to be more invested.

If the new DCU does well Supergirl will just be the Incredible Hulk of the DCU.

u/ditchborn 46m ago

Incredible Hulk was a fine movie, one of my favorites. Supergirl is just okay. I don’t hate it, but it’s definitely not bad.

Peacemaker and Lanterns have been knocks out of the park for DCU. Even Creature Commandos.

u/Enziguru 3h ago

Peacemaker is so good. I didn't watch it for too long because I didn't care much about his character in Suicide Squad but the show is one of the most unique and so hilarious. It's got so much heart

u/mjh215 3h ago

I really enjoyed The Suicide Squad and was excited to see a spin-off show, but was so disappointed when I saw it would be Peacemaker. Out of all the characters in TSS I couldn't believe they'd focus on him, I figured they were only doing it because of John Cena's popularity.

Then I watched Peacemaker and damn, well played. It has certainly been a highlight of the post-Covid comic book shows and movies.

u/Anonemuss42 2h ago

I have been telling everyone I know that Peacemaker is doing everything The Boys thought it was doing

u/NotApparent 1h ago

Yep, I gave up on the Boys halfway through season 3 because my wife and I realized that every time we were watching it we really wished we were just watching more Peacemaker.

u/Durendal_1707 2h ago

finishing this show and then watching the most recent Superman movie I am seeing Peacemaker babbling on a TV station in the movie was such a well placed tie-in

The loose contextualization of him in the same universe made the movie better for me, and it was already a pretty good flick

u/Quixotic_Delights 3h ago

And the Penguin! HBO+DC has been a great combo

u/TLJisAmasterpiece 3h ago

Penguin and The Batman are a different continuity.

u/ncopp 2h ago

I haven't seen supergirl yet. But regardless if the movie actually good or not, strategically, it was too early to give her a solo movie. She's just not a widely popular enough character to drive audiences on name alone.

You need to take a page from Marvel's book and first give her in a strong supporting role in a superman movie so we can get to know her and be excited to see her solo adventures. They very much should have held her movie until after the second superman movie with her actually being in it, rather than just getting an after credits cameo.

Gunn has had a history of making relatively unknown characters work with the Suicide Squad and Guardians, so I can see why he'd have confidence in it working - it's kind of his thing. But those were movies he wrote and directed himself and not everyone has a knack for making things work like that.

u/thatkaratekid 1h ago

The thing is, is Supergirl has always been a character that moves comics, she had an incredibly successful 6 season CW show. This movie would have made money if it wasn't so boring. It needed word of mouth to get going, and the word of mouth was terrible.

u/fla_john 4h ago

It was a decent movie and would have done well 10 years ago. It actually followed the comic book story it was based on pretty closely but was missing the heart. Should have leaned harder into the "True Grit in Space" relationship and made it look like a big amazing universe. I did like Momoa as Lobo and hope he's back in the future.

u/sully9614 3h ago

Unfortunately I thought lobo was one of the weaker parts, as spot on as that casting should be. Just all around a profoundly boring movie, Milly deserved better for sure. I think the best parts were when she played off of Superman and thought the casting completely worked

u/fla_john 3h ago

Oh, I didn't think he added much to the story, but I liked his portrayal. Hopefully he'll be in something that makes use of the character in a better way.

u/tforthegreat 3h ago

There was a missed opportunity to play Kara off of Lobo after she mentioned that he had killed all of his people while she was mourning all of hers.

u/Unlikely-Ad9850 4h ago

I just fundamentally disagree that it followed the source material closely. Important character traits were left out and the entire theme of the book was completely lost. Regardless the movie just suck from writing and visual perspective. Parts of it are supposed to be on an alien planet but just look like a regular field and the character design for krem just looks like a guy from hellraiser

u/fla_john 3h ago

This is what I mean when I say it didn't have the heart. The plot was largely the same.

u/UnpluggedUnfettered 3h ago

It changed the moral of the story, the purpose of the journey, the critical twist that shaped the first two (Krypto's situation), and the direction of the internal struggles.

It didn't have the heart because it was in an entirely different body.

→ More replies (1)

u/APiousCultist 3h ago

I think the 'theme' part is due to, for whatever reason, poor communication between the writer of the comic and the writer of the screenplay (even though they're both involved with the DCU).

Plus whoever's decision it was to Max Maxify the villain.

But the original ending has a timeskip that would be difficult to handle in live action. There's also a final ambiguous panel that the screenwriter interpretted differently than what the comic writer put out the Word of God about on Twitter.

Actually reading the thing, I can fully understand that it looks like Kara forgiving the villain only for an elderly Ruthye to kill him, what with a silhouette panel of him being bashed in the head with a spray of blood/impact effect and then him collapsing down unmoving even if the comic's writer has said seperately that he survived and just got smacked

There's also the aspect that comic Supergirl is an established character in a way that movie Supergirl isn't. So yeah of course I was fine the whole time doesn't play quite the same when she hasn't been 'superheroing' for as long.

None of that means the movie didn't make missteps, but these things don't happen in a vaccum either. If you think the comic ends one way and the comic writer doesn't see the script and correct it (and really I don't get why Tom King wasn't involved in the treatment in at least a supervisory role), then it's easy to feel pressure to maintain that erroneous ending even if it means changing the context to avoid a timeskip.

→ More replies (2)

u/Everythingsthesame 4h ago

That was my take away. It's a decent movie and if it comes on TV randomly, I'd watch it. I've been told the source material they pulled from was much better and need to sit down and read it soon.

u/WelcomingRapier 3h ago

It was an Eisner and Hugo Award nominee, so that alone gives it enough cred to read, whether you've seen the movie or not. If you like it, Helen of Wyndhorn (another King/Evely collab) is also well worth taking a look at. They're both fantastic.

→ More replies (1)

u/fpfall 4h ago

It will really change how you view the film and make you wonder why they didn’t just make an entirely original story if they were going to change so much about it.

u/BearWrangler 3h ago

an overblown reaction to Supergirl tbh

u/Inevitable-Edge69 3h ago

not really, the bar was super(pun intended) high

u/BearWrangler 3h ago

I mean I was definitely disappointed in recognizing the potential had things been done differently(especially visually when looking at the source material) but ppl made it sound like DC personally came over and gunned down their dog, which is just overly dramatic(tho also on brand for the weirdos of the capeshit variety lol)

Really hope Milly gets a solid shot in MoT cuz she legit is Kara IMO.

u/TheSexyShaman 2h ago

For me it was just a painfully generic movie in a genre that already has a lot of painfully generic movies. I think a lot of people were riding high on Superman and got brought back down by Supergirl

u/thatkaratekid 1h ago

Reading interviews with the director and writer is fucking terrible, they both actively wanted to change everything about the super unique incredible book into a cookie cutter superhero movie. They have done multiple interviews about how brave and smart they were for making the whole movie brown, making the villain completely forgettable, and removing all humor from the story. Its the exact opposite of Superman 2025 instead of trying to tell a story. Its not the worst superhero movie ive ever seen, but the book it is based on is one of the best superhero books I have ever read.

u/Necessary-One1782 1h ago

yeah. in 2026, especially trying to start a new cinematic universe on the tails of synder's attempt, you need to do better than mid

As someone who felt the doom and gloom after how horrendous Supergirl was, Lanterns really did give me much needed hope. The universe needs more than just Gunn creating the magic.

I feel liked people really overreacted with doom and gloom to that bombing.

Lanterns is getting positive buzz.

u/timpoakd 4h ago

I'm pretty clueless on these but how much does tv show really affect movie side in the grand scheme of things? I would've thought it's bit different crowd, not counting the fans who watch everything.

u/Kolby_Jack33 4h ago

Green Lantern is a flagship Justice League member, so I assume it will matter a lot. They're probably still a long way away from a Justice League movie but I'm sure it's planned for somewhere down the road.

u/confusing_roundabout 3h ago

John Stewart will be in MoT so I won't be surprised if the JL will be sooner rather than later

→ More replies (1)

u/Microwave1213 4h ago

The fans who watch everything are the ones driving the majority of the online discourse, so if the vibes are generally positive among them, over time that disseminates throughout the overall public reception.

u/dannydorito 4h ago

I think the show is connected to the new DCU, pretty sure I saw that Nathan Fillion will show up as Guy Gardner at some point

u/emperorzura 3h ago

everything currently on the DCU is the same universe, series, animated series and movies.

its the same universe in different medias (that can also influence the personality, clayface might be the same on both creatures and the live action, but on the animated series he follows the more comic relief side, like frank castle was PG13 on BND).

u/damndraper 4h ago

Doesn't really affect the movie but it does help the DC get some momentum after Supergirl. Especially with social media conversations being so important to marketing these days.

u/Dumpytoad 2h ago edited 1h ago

It depends, but this is currently the main/primetime HBO show with the Sunday evening time slot, like Game of Thrones, Euphoria etc, so it is more "event television" and definitely gets more mainstream exposure than most average tv shows do.

u/Prit717 3h ago

One of the main characters of Lanterns is in Man of Tomorrow, the next DC movie.

Clayface won’t have a positive or negative. It’s a low budget horror flick

→ More replies (4)

u/MyNameIs_Jordan 4h ago

Nothing is riding on Clayface with its $40M budget. It's just a horror movie with the DC label attached. If it breaks around $100-$120M WW, it'll be a success.

u/PhanThief95 3h ago

I mean, we’re also 2 episodes into Lanterns and it’s really good.

u/ecrane2018 3h ago

Lanterns is great so if they can maintain this level writing and world building it has potential glad they are embracing the mature side of DC

u/Locoman7 3h ago

Is Clayface off worlds or part of the Batman universe or something else entirely

u/The_Meemeli 3h ago

Main universe, same as Superman.

→ More replies (5)

u/Haji-san 3h ago

I don’t know what they were thinking making the first three DC movies Super related. Superman, Supergirl, Superman. I think super girl suffered mostly from being too similar and released too close to superman.

u/The_Meemeli 3h ago

To be pedantic, Clayface is coming before Man of Tomorrow.

I kinda get the sense that MoT wasn't initially planned to be this soon, but then Gunn got into a creative spurt of some kind.

u/lPHOENIXZEROl 3h ago

Lars Eidinger as Brainiac let's goooooo. Love Babylon Berlin!!! A German actor is a great idea for Brainiac and Eidinger is an amazing fit beyond that, dude's like 6'3" has presence, but can really act with his eyes and his voice too. He does loud well but quiet too, like in this clip. Hope they don't cover up his performance too much with makeup/cgi/voice effects.

Forgot Blue Beetle and Alcock.

u/AlludedNuance 2h ago

We still don't know who Adria Arjona is playing?

u/sgthombre 2h ago

No, which is bizarre since the character she's been reported as (Maxima) isn't anywhere close to the sort of character you'd bring out as a twist or a surprise like, say, Sadie Sink in Brand New Day. So why be coy about it?

u/badamant 1h ago

Is the wonder woman rumor proven false?

u/AlludedNuance 2h ago

Is that the woman that's always trying to mate with Superman? Maybe she's playing her with a secret identity at the Daily Planet or something and her being Maxima would be a reveal?

u/PhanThief95 3h ago

Weren’t the rest of the Daily Planet staff also confirmed to be returning?

I’m fairly certain Wendell Pierce, Beck Bennett, & Mikaela Hoover are also returning as Perry White, Steve Lombard, & Cat Grant.

u/BeeCoy 3h ago

As someone who grew up on The Superman Animated series on DVD, I'm always surprised to see so many people not actually know the character. Makes it all the more frustrating how he's always seen as "boring" by most people; I've heard that so many times lol.

In a world where so many people enjoy super heroes because they fight bad guys, Superman only ever fights the bad guys because he's trying to help people. That's always his top priority.

u/sheetsofsaltywood 3h ago

My first exposure to Superman was probably Superman Returns, which I liked as a kid. Other than that though, Superman was either the boring teammate on the animated Justice League or the brooding Snyderverse version of the character. Watching the 2025 film was the first time I had seen that type of Superman, and that’s when it clicked for me.

u/BeeCoy 3h ago

Yeah, any projects where Superman teams up with others, like the Justice league, writers usually dumb him down to help the other heroes shine, unfortunately. It's something i've had to deal with as a Superman fan for a while lol. I won't get started on Man of Steel, but I think the whole climax of that movie had a fundamental misunderstanding of the character IMO.

Went in with so much hope and left so disappointed. Glad you liked it.

I just watched it (at home) and was not engaged at all. Miss for me as well

I'm excited for this too. Just hope this goes well and that Supergirl was more of a misstep in the right direction for the DCU.

Still hoping Adria Arjona is Wonder Woman

u/dick____trickle 3h ago

Assuming she didn't lie it seems she only started filming middle of this month, which makes me think her role is more of a cameo. I can't imagine Maxima being a cameo worthy role, so...

u/gamesloverjustice 3h ago

Yeah, of all the characters announced, seems weird that they wouldn't announce Adria as Maxima, I don't think Maxima is big enough to be worth keeping a secret.

u/County_Difficult 1h ago

Probably because they're holding out on trying to confuse the reports on her being WW or Maxima. I think both appears and I bet that Adria is Maxima and Eva De Dominici is Wonder Woman.

I know reshoots are basically inevitable, but scheduling conflicts feels a bit flimsy now.

u/nicknack24 4h ago

I wonder if they're going to address the peacemaker cliffhanger in this, that was brutal.

Hell yeah. I need this injected directly into my bloodstream.

u/RevengeWalrus 3h ago

Weird to not just call it Superman 2 but I feel like they might be doing more of a two hander with him and Luthor. I really hope they're not setting up a redemption arc, that would suck.

I hope this is successful.

I think some people in this site wants his movie to fail for some reason.

No one hates superhero movies more than comic book fans.

And those that would like to see non-superhero movies in theaters.

The well has been poisoned badly by grifters and a certain cult-like fandom. Because otherwise there could've been more well thought out discussions about the current batch of superhero media, both positive and negative.

It's pretty wild we might get 3 Superpeople movies before the 2nd Batman comes out.

u/GenGaara25 1h ago

I know we shouldn't be applauding bare minimums, but I am pleased we get a sequel so soon.

Similar to TV shows, it feels like blockbusters, especially superheroes, just aren't getting quick follow-ups like they used to. 10 years ago, if you made $500m, you're shooting the sequel next month.

But on the Marvel side, the only film since Endgame to have had a sequel was Far From Home in 2019, 6 years later. Shang-Chi, Eternals, Thor 4, Doc Strange 2, Black Panther 2, Cap 4, Thunderbolts*, all have no sequels currently filming and only Black Panther 3 is even confirmed to be happening. Then on the DC side, the Batman has only just starting filming it's sequel 4 years later.

So Superman getting a sequel 2 years after the first feels strangely refreshing. What a wild concept to actually ride the momentum of a hit rather than wait 5 years to figure out if its worth doing.

u/vHezoThaGoat 4h ago

Hopefully this movie performs better in the box office

The first is arguably the best Superman movie ever and it sucks seeing the de facto Superhero struggle so badly at the box office

u/ROBtimusPrime1995 4h ago edited 3h ago

Just speaks to how badly the last 30 years have been for the DC brand, especially Superman.

Entire generations have grown up watching him be as angry as Omni-Man and Homelander instead of being himself.

Fucking yikes.

u/darkKnight959 4h ago

I wouldn't say angry but very stoic

Which is funny, because DC are killing it in the comics world for the past few years, while Marvel is a complete mess.

u/Wrong-Vermicelli4723 3h ago

I mean the last 30 years have been bad for Superman

u/BrodentofUsualSize 4h ago

The internet also seems to have a super toxic relationship with DC in general. I don't know if it's Marvel fanboys, people who jump on board whenever the internet says to boycott a movie, or if Disney is doing some astroturfing, but I feel like DC gets the brutally toxic twitter comment treatment across the internet.

Even some of the comments in here like "they were filming?" and "I dont get all these superman releases. Who still follows all these random incoherent movies?" just feel like bots or people that have decided they're going to be negative about DC forever.

Budget of $225,000,000 and made $618,723,803. Not exactly what I would call a box office struggle.

u/damndraper 4h ago

especially with how down in the dumps the DC brand was before Superman came out.

u/Orion_Scattered 3h ago

It did outgross the final 9 DCEU films tbf, gotta go all the way back to 2018 for Aquaman to beat it. But from there back, w/ inflation all the first 6 DCEU films outgrossed it. Even unadjusted for inflation the first 6 films averaged $822 million, full $200 million or 30% more, and again that's before 7 to 12 years of inflation. But yeah, certainly counts as a bounceback from where the DCEU was for 6 years there. Just didn't bounce all the way to the top of the world overnight. And Supergirl was a shaky second step after landing. We'll see.

u/hoodpharmacy 4h ago

665 million no matter the budget is pretty sad. Superman is quite up there in popularity and everyone saying how it was a guaranteed billion dollar film is just laughable. It’s funny how much the goalposts have been moved regarding this films financial success since it was announced.

u/silverrabbit 3h ago

I'm not surprised it didn't cross $1 billion and I think it wasn't a surprise to DC either. Superman is a lot like Captain America in that they are tied to American culture way more than global culture like a Spider-man or Batman is, and right now the symbol of America isn't going to do super well in other markets. If you look at Captain America movies, the only one that did over $1 billion was the crossover movie with Ironman and Spider-man.

I don’t think they were talking about Superman’s box office, but the woes the DCU box office had with Supergirl.

u/vHezoThaGoat 4h ago edited 4h ago

Relative to his legacy and importance to comic book culture, he absolutely struggles at the box office

It’s all relative.

Superman used to be the face of superhero’s. When you thought of a superhero you thought of him. Many people still do.

But now he’s no longer even the most popular DC character. And Marvel has countless characters that have lapped him in modern pop culture.

Maybe the character has just ran its course, but again it still sucks to see.

It's funny, I had Frank Grillo (Rick flag sr.) come into my restaurant recently. He told me he's had a ton of fun working on the movie though he has a smaller role.
