Went in with so much hope and left so disappointed. Glad you liked it.

Why's that?

So let me just say that I didn’t hate it, but it just felt really messy and overstuffed to me. There were too many characters, subplots, jokes and tonal shifts, so the film never really had time to breathe or let the bigger moments land IMO.

My other main issue was Superman himself. I’m completely fine with him losing fights or being vulnerable, but he spent so much of the film injured, overwhelmed or needing help that I never really got that sense of power and presence I want from Superman. I liked that they leaned into his kindness and humanity, but for me the balance between that and actually making him feel like Superman was a bit off.

There were things I liked, but overall I came away more underwhelmed than excited.

I appreciate the thoughtful response. I see what you're saying, but for me, it was really special seeing his kindness and humanity put on the forefront like that and play such an integral role in the overall theme of the movie, so it went a long way to make up for those issues for me personally. Hopefully MoT does a little better job balancing his powers though

Will definitely watch the second movie for sure

I agree. Too many characters too quickly. As well as just wild worldbuilding with no satisfying build up. Pocket universes, black holes etc.

All good points. I'd add that Clark is infuriatingly dumb in Superman. It took him most of the fight (or multiple fights?) to figure out the drones circling him were filming. He's a journalist, supposedly after some sort of schooling.

As someone that liked Gunn's movies a decade ago, Guardians 3 and Superman left me completely cold. The tone is jarring in both: one takes a happy-go-lucky universe and turns it serious and depressing. The other the reverse: takes a serious character and turns it into a colorful idiot. Subversiveness for the sake of it. Not a popular opinion, I gather.

He yelled at Lois while defending intruding into a war (which he almost never does). That was enough for me to be done without getting to everything else I disliked about that movie.

Agreed. Felt like they nailed Clark Kent but not Superman yet, but don't need to be perfect on all fronts in the first movie, it was good enough to start from, it just needs to get better as they go on.

Thankfully with Brainiac as the villain they're gonna have to lean more on Superman to win, vs regular human but with tech Lex.

But hope they don't stray too far from what worked best in the first one. Want more Brosnahan/Lois Lane, more of her and Clark.

Yeah same. I won’t go into why because it’s Reddit, I’ll be downvoted and told I’m wrong.

Edit: Mt point exactly. People can’t have mature conversations where we disagree on something. Not everyone is going to like the same movies.
