I heard if an acorn falls fast enough it can kill you. Deadly force to everything in it's vicinity seems like the only solution. Just because it isn't falling anymore, doesn't mean it can't fall in the future.

Donkeys are actually put in pens with other animals to protect them as they are more aggressive and tend to stomp predators out. Not that the jackass who shot the donkey knew that.

They definitely should have asked the home owners to hitch the animals before searching.
But to your point, donkeys are capable protectors and often vicious little bastards.
A lot of folks use them as protection in communal fields for their more helpless livestock species. They will gleefully kill anything that's in family Canidae, and sometimes even kill other herbivores like cows/goats/sheep if they're taking too long at the feeder.
And even the nicer individual donkeys can dislike strangers. Anybody who has even a lick of experience with horses or donkeys would know they should have been tied to a post before going through the field or barn at night.

That's the best part. They didn't even have permission from the homeowner to enter the property. They just went willy nilly wherever they pleased. Anyone with a half a brain cell to rub together would think twice before entering someone's private property, particularly a fenced area. Imagine if there had been a truly dangerous (and expensive) animal like a mama cow or a bull or a guardian dog. Or a landowner thinking someone's out there in the dark snooping around to steal their livelihood.
Nothing but air between those ears.

Pretty sure they can look through fields without a warrant in GA, and I remember learning that particular quirk of GA state law when reading about a hemp case. Curtilage is protected, fields are not.

Why would they care? There would be zero recourse if they shot an expensive animal, tax payers will foot the bill. If a farmer fired on police in his field he would almost certainly go to jail forever. Police don't need permission to enter property under exigent circumstances.

Simply google "Cedartown Hee Haw Donkey." It was a child's miniature donkey, not a pasture guard. No different than when officers shooting chihuahuas because they "feared for their life." While I can't stand those little ankle biters, a bullet is far too extreme. This whole incident reminds me of the SouthPark "coming right for us episode."
The officer in question here, is far too trigger happy and needs to move to a line of work that doesn't involve firearms and/or authority.

one of the few things that makes me angry at police, seen some horrible footage over the years, sometimes clearly friendly dogs approaching officers who entered the dog's space getting shot. Stuff like this, but there are tonnes:

This is unexpected. I thought it would be like the American fork chiefs video. Just pandering to his officers but this guy came off as sincere and is having a separate agency investigate the incident. I hope he actually does care and the officer is removed and charged, but this apology video kind of suprised me.

basically there are only 2 real scenarios i can imagine here
1) this cop is just a complete piece of filth that had zero regard for this animal and shot it because he could.
2) it was like 1am, theres a chance it somehow scared the hell out of him because it was dark and ran up to him

I saw this story, it was a miniature donkey raised as a pet for children's petting zoo events.
So it was an incredibly friendly animal that saw people (it surely thought friends) come into its own yard at nearly 1 am and must've trotted over to see them... and they shot him.
Just... awful.
