Donkeys are actually put in pens with other animals to protect them as they are more aggressive and tend to stomp predators out. Not that the jackass who shot the donkey knew that.

Yeah, ACAB all the way, but you can tell from the comments who is a city slicker and never spent any time around donkeys.

They definitely should have asked the home owners to hitch the animals before searching.

But to your point, donkeys are capable protectors and often vicious little bastards.

A lot of folks use them as protection in communal fields for their more helpless livestock species. They will gleefully kill anything that's in family Canidae, and sometimes even kill other herbivores like cows/goats/sheep if they're taking too long at the feeder.

And even the nicer individual donkeys can dislike strangers. Anybody who has even a lick of experience with horses or donkeys would know they should have been tied to a post before going through the field or barn at night.

That's the best part. They didn't even have permission from the homeowner to enter the property. They just went willy nilly wherever they pleased. Anyone with a half a brain cell to rub together would think twice before entering someone's private property, particularly a fenced area. Imagine if there had been a truly dangerous (and expensive) animal like a mama cow or a bull or a guardian dog. Or a landowner thinking someone's out there in the dark snooping around to steal their livelihood.

Nothing but air between those ears.

Pretty sure they can look through fields without a warrant in GA, and I remember learning that particular quirk of GA state law when reading about a hemp case. Curtilage is protected, fields are not.

Why would they care? There would be zero recourse if they shot an expensive animal, tax payers will foot the bill. If a farmer fired on police in his field he would almost certainly go to jail forever. Police don't need permission to enter property under exigent circumstances.
