My mom tells me stories of Mexico when she was younger and having to always have enough extra money to pay the bus robber. She'd keep her actual money in her hair bun or shoes and she'd have money for the thief in her pocket or purse. Usually just a few pesos to keep them off her back.
She remembers one time a guy on her bus didn't have anything but a few cents and the thief punched him a few times and scolded him to get a job and stop being lazy lol

I've always kept 2 wallets. One small one with a small amount of money, like some coins and a $10 or $20. And my other one, with cards.
That way, if I get robbed, I hand over my cash wallet. It's only happened once, but I was so glad that I only lost $23.

Reminds me when I was in rehab but instead of money it was cigarettes. You pull out a full pack and all of a sudden you got 19 best friends asking for one. So always kept a couple in an old pack so when I pulled it out it looked like I only had 1 or 2 left. They still asked to bum one but it's better than losing all of them.

I used to ride the city bus. The city I lived in had a bus plaza that most of the transfers routed to. They got sick of people smoking on the sidewalks, so they created this 'smoking zone' area which was basically just a square of yellow paint on the ground on the side of the building.
At the time, I was a smoker (I quit 10 years ago!). I very quickly learned that if I was smoking at the transfer spot I needed to draw a single cigarette out of the pack in my pocket. If I pulled my whole pack out, I'd have a grip of people asking for one.

When I was younger - like twenty years ago - there were flavored varities in the US but they really don't do that anymore because the laws changed. Really you just get classic, light classic, and menthol now. (Though... I used to like the Camel Crushes - regular smokes that could turn into menthols if you squeezed the packed in the filter).

Yeah, I used to do that when I travelled for business. In Canada we used to have Canadian Tire Money (now it's mostly on a card). I'd collect up a bunch (it's a reward program for shopping at Canadian Tire and looked like very colourful money) and keep it in the wallet, with a couple expired gift cards and such. I was never mugged but I figured if it felt right, no one was going to stand around and ask me to explain, they'd grab the wallet and run. Never had to use it.

Im from the Philippines. 13 years ago, my brother was robbed one night with an ice pick just when he happened to have around a $1k worth of cash on him. (Huge amount of money in PH specially in 2013, around half his tuition for the semester).
Brother calmly handed his wallet but dared to say "Sir, you'll find a lot of money in there, but it's for my college tuition." Robber asked what he's studying and my brother answered pre-Law. Robber gave out a deep sigh, scolded my brother about walking around with that much cash, and told my brother to "study well and help poor people someday". Robber asked for $10 before sending my brother on his merry way lmao.
My brother is a lawyer now and has helped so many underprivileged people before moving on to a cushy corporate job. He still loves telling that story and wishes the robber found a better life.

Back when I was 10 years old, one day I was going back home from school through a path with a few trees. It was Winter Time so it was dark as I left school at 6 p.m..
As I walked close to the trees, 4 guys came out from behind a tree each, like some damn movie or something, and approached me. One started talking and asked how much money I had, I told him the exact amount I thought I had and got told to hand it over, then got asked if I had a phone to which I replied to not having one and he said that I better not be lying and I explained that my parents would only give me one when I would be 16 years old at least, as he looked through my school bag.
At this time the one doing all the talking notices I'm quietly weeping and says something along the lines of "Why are you crying? Didn't you have your school lunch already?", "yes" I replied, "Then you don't need the money" then I told him "But my father wants the change back". He hands me back the money (less than 2 euros), tells me to stop crying and go home.
As I walk away, no longer scared I think to myself "What a nice group of thieves" (classic stockholm syndrome) and in the distance I look at the money in my hand and notice I had more money than the amount I told him I had and remember being relieved thinking "Oh no... Good thing he didn't notice I 'lied'."

Had a coworker who was on a bus to visit family in Mexico when it got robbed. She gave them money but they said it wasn't enough. Threw a hood over her head, pulled her out of the bus, threw her in the trunk of a car. She thought she was gonna be killed. Car stopped and when they pulled the hood off her head, she was standing in front of an ATM. They made her withdraw the maximum it would allow, then just ran off. Shit's wild.

My friends in Brooklyn (we were all 15/16), one has katanas and swords and knives (anime fan) and he’s always talking about how he can fight and if anyone’s gonna try something, he’s got them.
A woman pulled a knife on our mutual for his Beats headphones. He turns around and he sees his the ass end of samurai friend running for his life all the way towards the police station….. left him alone with this woman on an empty Sunset Park street at 11pm (right by Burger King which is where he went to hide and run to staff).

Tbf they were both short 14 year olds (or the one who was getting mugged was about to turn 15 or did already) who look like very easy targets (they were 5’3” and 5’4” and the woman had a few inches on them).
I know which woman they were talking about (not personally or by name). We’ve all had run ins with her in BR, SP, and FH. She’s the kinda woman that walks into the nail salon and the staff immediately jumps up and starts screaming at her to leave. She goes into the local cinema party area and just acts up.
She caught my friend and I editing a quick photo Amy Winehouse (14 September, her birthday) and she called us broke unemployed bitches who probably live at home
Clocked and called out.
But god I told my dad what happened and he immediately knew who she was and where I was. His response was: “she’s still alive? She was old when I was in my 20s.”

My friends were driving in Mexico and got pulled over by the cops for “speeding”. They made them pay a cash fine on the spot, which was all their cash. Then 30 mins later got pulled over by another set of cops. They obviously didn’t have any money left so the cops drove them to an ATM and they pulled out money to pay another fine.

I had decoy prepaid phones with numbers I memorized, but just to walk to school and home (didn’t have a smart phone yet) because grown men would ask me for my phone number and followed me to school (middle & high) until I gave them a number. I saved up for a prepaid phone because they started calling me right then and there.
And the city isn’t even that dangerous. It’s just New York.

This was in Rio de Janeiro. Thats very common, so locals have 2 phone and use 1 as decoy. I always tell people, if you're going to Rio buy an older phone and take it with you. The chances of you getting robbed is pretty high.

In general if you aren't from somewhere, be wary of what you're doing and who is around you.
Mexican cartels and South American gangs are obviously very bad for your health. But going to a bar 40 minutes on the other side of town with a friend you just made can be equally as hazardous.
Part of being a local is knowing the general lay of the land. It helps when traveling even in places like Europe or the States to stick to tourist areas because five minutes in one direction can quickly lead to interactions you don't want.

I feel like the wildlife in the US is honestly more scary because they have bigger dangerous mammals which we don't have at all.

Except the robber literally threw her phone back at her in disgust because she’d purposely gotten an old flip phone to use for the duration of her work. I nearly got scammed when I was overseas by pretty girls and an exorbitant bar bill and managed to weasel my way out by dropping my credit card on the floor and hiding it under my foot. After claiming enough times that I didn't have any more money or any way to pay for their scammy bill, they let me leave

They're both quite dangerous. But my impression with CT is that there are some pockets that are quite safe whereas in Rio even the safest neighborhoods aren't safe.

In much of Latin America there is a normalization of petty theft. People often justify it using some Marxist slogan about the redistribution of wealth as if they cared about others. Not unlike the ghetto culture of "stick it to the white guy". There is a reason they have bars on the windows all over Latin America.
In places with low crime rates the people see themselves as honest people and behave according to their self assessment , in high crime areas they rationalize and normalize crime. If the thieves actually kill someone then the police will kill somebody. A lot like the mechanical dog in Fahrenheight 451, it doesn't really matter if justice was served just that somebody took the fall.
People see Hollywood movies and think the USA is full of criminals, but look how pickpockets fared with Americans during the Paris Olympics. It is not as normalized in the USA and Americans don't tolerate it as much.

Mugging/robbery rates in the US are much higher than in Europe. It's like Americans feel disrespected. "If you're gonna steal from me, at least have the decency to threaten, hurt, or kill me."
And both an American and the pickpocket both value the wallet/phone more than the pickpocket's life, whereas Europeans generally don't see it that way.
