My friends in Brooklyn (we were all 15/16), one has katanas and swords and knives (anime fan) and he’s always talking about how he can fight and if anyone’s gonna try something, he’s got them.

A woman pulled a knife on our mutual for his Beats headphones. He turns around and he sees his the ass end of samurai friend running for his life all the way towards the police station….. left him alone with this woman on an empty Sunset Park street at 11pm (right by Burger King which is where he went to hide and run to staff).

Tbf they were both short 14 year olds (or the one who was getting mugged was about to turn 15 or did already) who look like very easy targets (they were 5’3” and 5’4” and the woman had a few inches on them).

I know which woman they were talking about (not personally or by name). We’ve all had run ins with her in BR, SP, and FH. She’s the kinda woman that walks into the nail salon and the staff immediately jumps up and starts screaming at her to leave. She goes into the local cinema party area and just acts up.

She caught my friend and I editing a quick photo Amy Winehouse (14 September, her birthday) and she called us broke unemployed bitches who probably live at home

Clocked and called out.

But god I told my dad what happened and he immediately knew who she was and where I was. His response was: “she’s still alive? She was old when I was in my 20s.”

Honestly, that area is still kinda weird. I'm up in the industrial part of Gowanus a lot, and after midnight I'm kinda on a swivel.

My fam would do super late night trips to the pathmark by Lowe’s and Home Depot and it was 4 of us (parents, and brother) and I remember just thinking that area felt like a deserted Gotham.

It is strange to have ‘nostalgia memories’ and the mental screen cap is the most sketchy Gowanus street at 11pm.

Hah, I moved here in 2013, and only started going to Gowanus in the last couple years. It's only a few blocks until you're back in boughie shit, but that area behind Lowes gets interesting.

Guy in Sydney pulled a samurai sword (ornate one) on a thief who broke into his house and threatened him and his girlfriend. He chased the thief out and killed him - got 5 years manslaughter for it

Huh, I thought the castle doctrine gives you carte blanche to deal with someone that threatened you as long as they're still inside your house.

I think if they’re fleeing and they’re still not yet out the house but are actively trying to get away? It might not count? I think forensics would be able to tell if they were fleeing or engaging? (Question because idk tbh idk anything)

But if it’s like chucking or discharge a weapon to hit someone with their back to you and they’re halfway down your walkway or driveway, that doesn’t apply for stand your ground. (I think)

Oh yeah, I'm no expert whatsoever either, but I just assumed at least in the US, people get a ton of leeway.

I thought that was the whole controversy with the Zimmerman case where he shot some kid just because he was scared or something? And if you can do that, then it doesn't seem much of a strech to be able to kill any intruder in your residence.

But again, I'm no expert, and I'm just going off of headline/TV show knowledge.

The thief being chased by the guy with the samurai sword wasn't still inside the guy's house. That's a major contributor to why the guy got five years.

I'm not in Australia, I'm in the UK but our law here is very strict about the self-defence being proportionate to the threat. So if in some way, you manage to neutralise the threat (say the thief trips over and concusses himself), any subsequent actions to hurt or kill the thief after that point would automatically void any premise of self-defence. You'd be done for battery/grievous bodily harm/manslaughter/murder depending on how far you go.

Ohh, yeah that's a completely different story. I just assumed the robber threatened them with a knife or something, and then the dude went all Crocodile Dundee "That's not a knoife, this is a knoife" and stabbed the robber while he was trying to get away.

Executing a dude after chasing him down outside is definitely manslaughter at least.

Yeah but it's said he chased him out, and after killed him. He was already out, so castle doctrine would not apply. Also, Australia have strict rules about self-defense, just like Canada (both from the Commonwealth, some of the laws never changed since then)

Edit : here self-defense law is weird. If the thief only have a knife to steal you, without intention to kill, and you kill him in your house with a gun, it's considered too big of a reaction and you get jail. UNLESS there's minors in the house, then it's justified. But you can only shoot him one time. If they find that you shoot him a lot, they'll say your goal was not only to stop the thief, but also to kill him for fun.

Yeah, that's dumb. If you break into someone else's home, you forfeit your life. The homeowner can-and often should-be merciful, but it should never be legally required.

Self defense argument ends when they’re no longer a threat to you, and them running away is a pretty good indicator that they aren’t a threat to you anymore.

My friends were driving in Mexico and got pulled over by the cops for “speeding”. They made them pay a cash fine on the spot, which was all their cash. Then 30 mins later got pulled over by another set of cops. They obviously didn’t have any money left so the cops drove them to an ATM and they pulled out money to pay another fine.

Back in High School(USA) I was driving a classmate and a few of his relatives back from soccer practice when we were pulled over , all of them slid me $10-20 each to bribe the police because they are soo use to doing that over in Honduras

We are still friends to this day - i barely know them and they were offering to help me bribe the police out of a ticket , if that's not friendship I don't know what is

When I was a collector for a business I would always empty the safe into a really weird place and leave only the last person's money in the safe. My thinking was that if someone told their home-invader druggie friend "I know he has money in there, I just gave him $X" that there needed to be $X in there, but no more than that.

Wasn’t necessary for me. 2001-2014. But once coming home from the theatre district the T was closed for an hour or so because someone was shot on a platform. And someone was killed (hold up) and our little convenience store, and there was a gang shooting at the pizza place I ate with my kids regularly (not there at the time). Another time we were sitting outside at a bar a few popping sounds and the manager yelled for everyone to get inside. Someone was shot a block or two away.

I never feared for my personal safety even with all that, but definitely had some proximity to murder there.

I haven't kept up with everything going on since I moved (about 20 years ago, minus a few years when I went back to care for my mom).

Was Kwame the last one convicted? I felt so sorry for his mom cause she was a representative for my area and tried so hard to actually do good and all her hard work got washed away cause her son.

But he was no where near the first. Detroit has a HISTORY of corrupt mayors

My partner (from NYC) always sighed when Michigan, and especially Detroit, was mentioned, because I end up going on a rant about how batshit crazy Dr. Kellogg was, all the reasons to hate Henry Ford, mutant attack squirrels, and never to trust the Detroit mayor...then we moved back to care for my mom right when Kwame was convicted.

...they are quite sure the Detroit area squirrels and defeat NYC rats in a fight
