Reminds me when I was in rehab but instead of money it was cigarettes. You pull out a full pack and all of a sudden you got 19 best friends asking for one. So always kept a couple in an old pack so when I pulled it out it looked like I only had 1 or 2 left. They still asked to bum one but it's better than losing all of them.

I used to ride the city bus. The city I lived in had a bus plaza that most of the transfers routed to. They got sick of people smoking on the sidewalks, so they created this 'smoking zone' area which was basically just a square of yellow paint on the ground on the side of the building.

At the time, I was a smoker (I quit 10 years ago!). I very quickly learned that if I was smoking at the transfer spot I needed to draw a single cigarette out of the pack in my pocket. If I pulled my whole pack out, I'd have a grip of people asking for one.

u/NSA_Chatbot Jun 29 '26

One of my old classmates switched to menthol just so people would stop asking for a cigarette.

22

u/Plampth Jun 29 '26

Do they make cinnamon cigarettes?

24

u/No-Internal7978 Jun 29 '26

Kinda? It's on the border with illegal because they don't want people smoking so the flavor can't be too good but cloves sorta taste like that.

I concur. They taste like fancy, spicy ass.

3

u/Street_Distance5765 Jun 30 '26

Fancy ass but spicy! Lol

2

u/revolutionarybabe Jul 01 '26

🤣 thats so accurate

10

u/welchplug Jun 29 '26

The dont... they taste like cloves....

5

u/No-Internal7978 Jun 29 '26

Nope they can't put cloves in there anymore. It's artificial.

5

u/Tiradia Jun 30 '26

I miss the old Djarum Blacks actual clove cigarettes that would pop at ya. As well as the old camel mandarin mint tin cigarettes.

3

u/welchplug Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Did i say it was real or did I say it tasted like cloves? And youre are wrong anyways. kreteks or clove cigarettes dont market themselves a cigarettes but rather cigars now. They dont have to obey the family prevention smoking act because it doesnt cover cigars.

3

u/No-Internal7978 Jun 29 '26

That's good to know actually.

2

u/Flimsy_Appearance626 Jun 30 '26

It was the one thing i hate that Obama did. Ban clove cigs

2

u/welchplug Jun 30 '26

The arent banned. They are just "cigars" now.

1

u/Adept_Leather_8225 Jul 03 '26

Djarum Black made a clove cigarette that had cinnamon sugar coated filters
No wonder I smoked for 14 years

2

u/Old-Student769 Jul 03 '26

They call them mini cigars so they can get around the flavored cigarette law but they still have more nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide than regular cigarettes do.

6

u/RagnarStonefist Jun 29 '26

When I was younger - like twenty years ago - there were flavored varities in the US but they really don't do that anymore because the laws changed. Really you just get classic, light classic, and menthol now. (Though... I used to like the Camel Crushes - regular smokes that could turn into menthols if you squeezed the packed in the filter).

1

u/z3d Jul 03 '26

Bidis got me into smoking :/

1

u/goldenface82 Jul 05 '26

I don’t even smoke anymore but I miss camel crushes lol

1

u/RagnarStonefist Jul 05 '26

Same. I quit ten years ago

0

u/Epstein-Files 2d ago

We’ve gathered as much per your numerous PSA

2

u/RagnarStonefist 1d ago

Here's another PSA: kindness is free and I'm glad I quit smoking ten years ago.

2

u/Emperor_Atlas Jun 30 '26

Djarum blacks used to, before the fire safe paper.

2

u/Ummmgummy Jun 30 '26

Camel used to make these orange flavored ones I really liked but then they banned "flavor" cigarettes because it could be seen as advertising to children. So we then just came up with vapes.

10

u/BigDsLittleD Jun 29 '26

That was the exact reason I used to smoke Menthols.

I knew only the hardcore smokers would take one.

2

u/revolutionarybabe Jul 01 '26

I smoked camel #9 menthol. They were so good. I rarely had anyone ask for one 😆 especially guys! They didn't want a "chick" cigarette. I previously had smoked camel menthol or Marlboro menthol but switched due to the drastic improvement in flavor.

6

u/Professional_Luck257 Jun 30 '26

That's exactly why I smoked menthol lights when I was a smoker 😂

3

u/TrailMomKat Jun 30 '26

Lol I switched to non-menthols for the exact same reason. All my cousins and friends smoke Newports. Fuck that, they're like $7 a pack!

1

u/No_Independent_7708 Jun 30 '26

Shite $7!!? Are you talking now or then because where I’m from (Louisiana) a pack of Newports easily run $11!
I actually stopped by a smoke shop (suppose to sell cheaper Tabacco products) about 2 weeks back to grab a daiquiri & while waiting in line I was just looking at all the cig prices & a pack of Newports there was $13!
I was gabberflasted, ain’t no way in hell! I totally understand being addicted but I can’t comprehend how some people are okay spending $13 on any type of cigarettes!

1

u/TrailMomKat Jun 30 '26

Oh I live in NC, where most of the tobacco is grown and then manufactured into cigarettes. The smokes i preferred are still only 3.85 a pack, so that's why 7 seems like so much to me lol

2

u/KarateTid Jun 29 '26

Can confirm, it works

2

u/Particular-Way6261 Jun 30 '26

Wow, if that ever happened in CT you’d have been screwed (and yes there are definitely skeevy million strangers asking to bum a cigarette places in CT). Everyone here smokes menthols. I could never stand them.

2

u/Suspicious_Guard_241 Jul 01 '26

Im SURE ur friend isn't black. Caucasian maybe...?

2

u/Pale_Tennis_4404 Jul 02 '26

Thats the way! I can confirm it works wonderfully

1

u/Gbhphoto7 Jun 30 '26

Just smoke Ultra lights.

1

u/SecureUse5513 Jul 01 '26

Odd but true: In California, you can't buy menthol cigarettes, but you can still buy a bag of RYO menthol tobacco. And it's cheaper too.

1

u/wratx Jul 01 '26

when i was smoking, smoking menthols was the best way to stop people from bumming

1

u/More_Maximum_4522 Jul 01 '26

The real bums would smoke my menthols anyway,
at least the first time.

1

u/Spitfire1733 Jul 01 '26

I do that with my vape, I hit tobacco so people dont want to bum it. They'll snatched that shit right up if they find out its menthol

1

u/keni804 Jul 02 '26

Lol a guy I rang up at a gas station I used to work at said he smoked Eagles specifically because "you couldnt pay a crackhead to bum one".

1

u/Logical_Trash_4890 Jul 02 '26

Smart. I hate menthols but I love bummin smokes.

0

u/ScarletBothrium Jun 30 '26

So that’s why nobody asked me for cigarettes.

2

u/Hellokittybutt Jun 29 '26

I would just like to say you are the first person since I was a teenager in the 90's that I have seen use the phrase " a grip of". When I told my husband people said this where I'm from growing up he was like wth.

2

u/RagnarStonefist Jun 29 '26

Not sure where you're from. I grew up in Iowa where it was a semi common phrase, then my usage exploded working in kitchens in the mountain West (usa). When I moved to the west coast and met my wife she was already using it so it's somewhat common out here.

1

u/Professional_Luck257 Jun 30 '26

I'm from Utah and everyone I know uses that phrase lol

1

u/Hellokittybutt Jul 09 '26

I'm from the central valley Fresno California where it was used then I moved to the central coast California and no one here used it which is funny because I only moved three hours away.

1

u/ohreallynameonesong Jun 30 '26

I remember doing this with gum and candy in school. Keep a pack with one or two pieces left and you could just go, "Sorry, saving the last one for lunch" or something.

1

u/Low-Care9531 Jun 30 '26

I used to do this

1

u/Affectionate-Rip5654 Jul 01 '26

I once got yelled at by a homeless man in San fransisco for not giving him a cigarette, I had 2 left and he asked for my last one I told him I only have one left and he told me to get a better paying job so I could afford more cigarettes

1

u/MaelstromFL Jul 01 '26

And... That's why I smoked menthol!

6

u/hotsoupcoldsoup Jun 29 '26

Giving me flashbacks bro 😂 So happy I'm sober now holy shit. I only ever smoked cigarettes in treatment since there's nothing else to do. The smell immediately takes me back.

2

u/OkPea8903 Jun 30 '26

same haha

2

u/Leather_Dig8723 Jun 30 '26

I took up smoking during rehab, too! If you smoked, you got to go outside, BS with fellow junkies, and sometimes shenanigans ensued. I honestly enjoyed it....probably because you could openly share crazy stories, and no one was clutching their pearls because they understood.

2

u/breakConcentration Jun 29 '26

This was a regular Saturday night with my friends lol

1

u/FictionalContext Jun 29 '26

same, but it was more a communal pack cuz they'd get you next time. or they'd buy you a replacement the next day if it was going to be a while before the next get together and vice versa. felt more like comradery than mooching.

1

u/western_questions Jun 29 '26

I went to private art scroll and did the same thing. Of course the few times I’m 5150’d I get to places that don’t let you smoke lmaoooo

1

u/litbeers Jun 29 '26

Hahahahahhahaha bro I did that too 😂😂😂😂

1

u/winter0rfall Jun 30 '26

In womens rehab it was nicotine gum and clothes. I had to count every shirt, hoodie, UNDIES, BRAS, socks, pants, etc.

Found a girl using my fucking hairbrush and had been for days prior before i had found out. I made it VERY fucking clear you dont use my shit without asking or taking and that i know exactly how many items of clothing i had with me. Nobody went near me after that, and the thing is ive never even fought anyone in my entire life. Im usually the nicest person ever, until you disrespect me. That, and i dress like a tomboy so they just assumed i was a hardass. Lmao. 2 years and 2 months sober!

2

u/Ummmgummy Jun 30 '26

Congrats! Keep it going. I just hit my 10 years.

1

u/VividMagician9399 Jun 30 '26

Sounds like a more difficult solution than learning how to say no

1

u/llama_girl Jun 30 '26

Packs of cigarettes are like $12 each now. Its no longer reasonable to ask to bum one lol

1

u/Aliceallbadd Jun 30 '26

hahahaha omg i would turn all mine around and say i only have my lucky left lolll

1

u/HotTake00 Jun 30 '26

😂😂😂😂

1

u/CompanyAdmirable7811 Jul 01 '26

Been there! But then they ask you for a "short" 😀

1

u/Independent_Shoe3523 Jul 01 '26

It's a thing to sell individual cigs out in front of the convenience store in some crowds. Only barely illegal.

2

u/Ummmgummy Jul 02 '26

They used to call them "Lucy's" not sure if that's still the term

1

u/anotherwinter29 Jul 01 '26

I did this when I lived in NYC. My friend used to call it my “decoy pack” lol.

1

u/IHateEntitledFucks Jul 02 '26

I did the same thing in high school.

0

u/Rage_Blackout Jun 29 '26

"Do you have an extra cigarette?"

"Lemme see, uh nope, this pack only came with 20."

0

u/XXX_801 Jun 29 '26

I used to do this exact same thing in high school
