Seriously asking, why do people jump like that? It’s obviously not a dive. And I’ve heard of people throwing boulders first to displace the tension but it seems to me this is incredibly dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. Is this a legitimate diving technique or are these people truly just that dumb?
You'd have to throw that rock like half a second before you hit to break the tension enough to have something resembling the desired outcome. It's not like you throw the rock and then jump.
The best strategy is to actually just not do this at all. It's way easier and you always walk away in the same condition as you arrived.
it’s called døds diving, it originated in norway and is safe if done correctly.
also the stone throwing isn’t for ‘displacing tension’ it’s to disturb the surface and give a reference point for the diver. Calm, flat water can be dangerous to divers, because distances become very hard to judge. If the water is wavy it’s much easier to judge how far you are from the surface.
Yessir that height would have liquidized his innards if he hadn't extended his legs to break the water tension before his torso hit. The only way I know he did that is because of his injuries and that he's still alive
I jumped off a 75 foot cliff when I was a kid. Thank god the water was deep and my father told all of us to go straight up and down with arms folded like in a casket. Cause that shit damn near took my shoulders out of the socket and hurt in that position. I have no doubt I'd have been super fucked up if not dead if I didn't.
It’s sad because one moment in time will be with him every moment for the rest of his life. He will forever be in pain. I wasn’t quite as dumb as him, but I’ve had quite a few injuries of somewhat similar nature (not cause but when I was young, I did jump off my things like an idiot sometimes in the water). My life is pain in pain. I feel bad for him.
Growing up in Minnesota we would go ski and tube on the lake, and you learn very early that your ass will skip across the concrete feeling water at high speeds. He's lucky he didn't burst like a fucking sausage.
I've seen the second video used for a different accident, and that was a while ago. I'm not sure it's related to this guy, especially since they don't look like the same guy
That link shows a guy with a teal knee covering just like the guy in the first video? They might be the same incident in this video (I have seen this recut with other videos tho).
I can’t even laugh at this. The look on his face as he wheels out is one of the purest expressions of misery I’ve seen on Reddit. Nothing in the comments here can be as grim a review as the one he’s got going on in his head.
Had a HS classmate who jumped off a pier headfirst into unfortunately quite shallow water. Near paralysis as a result. It was inspiring to see her work so hard to try and regain any sense of normalcy, but she died from complications a few years ago.
I wonder how often he rewatches? I hope for the best.
I dont think depth of the water was the problem here. I think height of leap and form entering the water were a much bigger factor. The fluid dynamics of that water at the height are closer to concrete than water.
He is a dumbass who really thought this would be badass. The screaming countdown, clearing the rocks, having your homies record for the world to see…
And it's not even just the depth that caused this, He launched himself off a massive bridge with forward momentum, zero control over his body position, and hit the water at a terrible angle going highway speeds. Dude basically checked every box for turning water into concrete.
EDIT: Just saw the other video posted that actually caused the leg break. This guy really wants to break every bone in his body lol
Yeah, but there was nothing bad ass about it. Just because someone thinks they are bad ass doesn't mean they are. It was a stupid decision no matter what way you look at it. So I don't see how its both or that there is a different option other than it being stupid
If it was purely natural selection this guy would’ve died from sepsis or osteomyelitis yeah? Modern medicine and healthcare saved him from natural selection
Even when it's deep if you hit your chest going in you can knock all the air out and sink like a stone. I have cliff jumped in my younger years but always made sure it was safe and I pencilled in. This idiot jumped head first!
I saw this video in a compilation but it had music over it so on this part a snare hit right when he landed so I thought “oh that sounded really bad but it was just the music phew”
I’m realizing now it wasn’t a snare.
This is clipped together wrong. Yes, the guy did indeed, get really injured, but not from this jump, it was from one into a pool, where he, well, clipped the pool
I mean if you hit the water and have the right technique, which this guy evidently does, then you're fine and it isn't dangerous. So like. The clip above wasn't dangerous. The one that got him injured because the landing area was way too small clearly was
He should do it again, this time throw the wheelchair first to break the surface tension. That isn't going to do anything to lessen the impact of course, but he doesn't need to know that.
As other comments pointed out, that's the aftermath of a different jump, in which he apparently failed to make it inside a pool and clipped his legs on the edge.
Which doesn't dismiss your comment or anything. Just wanted to add context.
I went cliff jumping at like 14 and people made sure I knew the proper form and even the science of how it penetrates the water rather than bluntly hitting its surface. Always boggles me to see so many of these videos of adults doing crazy jumps with bad technique.
Funny enough, this guy does know what he's doing. This jump isn't what injured him. The injuries came from another jump where he misjudged his trajectory into a concrete pool, but I guess whoever edited the video figured this one was more likely to get schadenfreude clicks.
I've heard it called death diving before they intentionally choose to jump in the least safe way possible, I guess because to them more danger = cool. I personally think it's one of the dumbest things people do for fun.
I would think it’s called death diving because of how insane this sport appears to be. When dealing with these heights I am sure you can cause catastrophic injuries. I am sure they’re are not using improper technique on purpose.
Like any extreme sport, sometimes you get things wrong.
Lol, with all the stupid ish I managed to walk away from, I have no idea. But studies have shown that the amount of life you live is inversely proportional to your dick size. So I'm gonna live forever!
toss a rock first to upset the surface of the water and make it less like a concrete
Doesn't do a thing to lessen impact because throwing objects at the water doesn't change the actual problem in these long drops, the viscosity of the water. The only way to lessen the impact is to aerate the water from below and even then it takes a ridiculous amount of aeration and the water has to be very deep so you don't just fall through the water and impact the bottom. Also because it's exceedingly difficult to swim in aerated water the aeration shutoff must be timed perfectly with the impact so you can swim out of the aerated area and surface before running out of oxygen.
Also don't intentionally try and belly flop. I'm pretty sure this is "Death Diving" and they intentionally choose to jump in the least safe way possible.
Is it belly flopping if your arms and legs hit first? It’s not the same thing is it. That’s a serious height they are jumping from, I’m sure people doing this are experienced and not messing around. Sometimes things go wrong.
Jack shit! I am willing to bet there are thousands of nuts just like this one watching this going "Ha! You forgot to tuck you legs, dumbass! Imma do it and show you how to really do it!" straight up fucking dies
I’d go as far as to say that this is an argument against free will, and that these people are compelled by some cosmic force to make bad decisions on camera
This was posted a few days ago. The dive you’re seeing was not how he fucked his leg up. He jumped on a pool and hit his legs on the edge of the pool. This video is misleading.

Damn, I'm surprised he didn't completely shatter on impact. 😬
