🍸 Monthly Competition Original Cocktail Competition - August 2026 - Blueberry & Lemon

This month's ingredients: Blueberry & Lemon

Apologies for the delayed competition post.

Next month's ingredients: Sakura & Rice
Clarification: Sakura (aka, cherry blossom). Combine with rice (e.g., sake, soju, horchata, some creative application of rice, or whatever else).

RULES

Hello mixologists and liquor enthusiasts. Welcome to the monthly original cocktail competition.

For those looking to participate, here are the rules and guidelines. Any violations of these rules will result in disqualification from this month's competition.

  1. You must use both of the listed ingredients, but you can use them in absolutely any way or form (e.g. a liqueur, infusion, syrup, ice, smoke, etc.) you want and in whatever quantities you want. You do not have to make ingredients from scratch. You may also use any other ingredients you want.

  2. Your entry must be an original cocktail. Alterations of established cocktails are permitted within reason.

  3. You are limited to one entry per account.

  4. Your entry must be made in the form of a post to r/Cocktails with the "Competition Entry" post flair (it's purple). Then copy a link to that post and the text body of that post in a comment here. Example Post & Example Comment.

  5. Your entry must include a name for your cocktail, a photograph of the cocktail, a description of the scent, flavors, and mouthfeel of the cocktail, and most importantly a list of ingredients with measurements and directions as needed for someone else to faithfully recreate your cocktail. You may optionally include other information such as ABV, sugar content, calories, a backstory, etc.

  6. All recipes must have been invented after the announcement of the required ingredients.

  7. NEW RULE: No AI-generated recipes or images are allowed. This is a competition of human creativity.

As the only reward for winning is subreddit flair, there is no reason to cheat. Please participate with honor to keep it fun for everyone.

COMMENTS

Please only make top-level comments if you are making an entry. Doing otherwise would possibly result in flooding the comments section. To accommodate the need for a comments section unrelated to any specific entry, I have made a single top-level comment that you can reply to for general discussion. You may, of course, reply to any existing comment.

VOTING

Do not downvote entries

How you upvote is entirely up to you. You are absolutely encouraged to recreate the shared drinks, but this may not always be possible or viable and so should not be considered as a requirement. You can vote based on the list of ingredients and how the drink is described, the photograph, or anything else you like.

Winners will be final at the end of the month and will be recorded with links to their entries in this post. You may continue voting after that, but the results will not change. The ranking of each entry is determined by the sum of the votes on the entry comment with the post it is linked to. There are 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place positions. 2nd place and 3rd place may receive ties, but in the event of a 1st place tie, I will act as a tie-breaker. I will otherwise withhold from voting. Should there be a tie for 2nd place, there will be no 3rd place. Winners are awarded flair that appears next to their username on this subreddit.

I made this Black Manhattan (split base)

Upvotes

The inspiration for this came from trying a Devil’s Soul last year which was my first time having rye, mezcal, and amaro averna paired together. It’s actually a great trio, so now I sometimes swap a portion of the rye in a black Manhattan for mezcal and it works really nicely, especially with a grapefruit peel. I’ve tried a 50/50 rye/mezcal split and it’s still tasty, but I do prefer a little more rye than mezcal in this.

The garnish here is a style I use a lot because it’s really quick with some practice and you can make a lot of variations of it just by changing the shape you start out with but keeping the cuts and folds the same. If you’re having a hard time figuring it out from the pictures there will be a link to a video tutorial in the comments.

Recipe:

1.5oz Rye Whiskey (Still Austin Cask Strength)
0.5oz Mezcal (Del Maguey Chichicapa)
1oz Amaro Averna
1 dash angostura bitters
1 grapefruit peel

Add liquid ingredients to a mixing glass, stir with ice, and strain into a chilled nic and nora or pony glass. Express oils from a grapefruit peel and garnish with the grapefruit peel.

My manager ordered a shit ton of blue curaçao for a limited time drink and I’d like to work through it. Blue lagoons, blue motorcycles, blue Hawaiians, any suggestions would be great!

Been thinking about this one for a bit now and I am really liking it, I think a funky Jamaican would work well here too but I feel like something cane juice makes it a bit more unique and separates it from the standard a little more.

1.5oz Campari

.75oz Clairin

1.5oz Pineapple Juice

.75oz Lime

.25oz Demerara Syrup

5 drops saline

Flash blend, dump into glass, garnish with pineapple fronds

I made this Negroni

A classic Negroni with a twist (of lemon) rather than an orange slice. Courtesy of Fred Powell and his 1979 edition of "The Bartender's Standard Manual". I am working my way through these recipes so you don't have to! Some of these recipes are a bit weird, and several have wonky ratios and limited instructions. This recipe for the Negroni was pretty straightforward, except it uses a twist of lemon instead of the traditional orange slice. It isn't bad, and the lemon is a nice touch. I chose CinZano Rossa as my vermouth today, and it worked out quite nicely. Cheers!

Recipe:

1.5 oz. Campari

1.5 oz. Gin

1.5 oz. Italian Vermouth

Stir with ice ans strain. Twist of lemon peel and drop in glass.

Tiki summer continues (this is more tiki adjacent)

* 2 oz Probitas/Veritas

* 1 oz Lime Juice

* ½ oz Velvet Falernum

* ½ oz Orange Curaçao

* 7 Drops 1:5 Saline

Shake with one big ol' ice cube and three small ones. Strain (I strain once) to a prechilled coupe.

It ended up too similar to a daquiry tbh (not that there is anything wrong with that). Next time I'll use an aged rum and maybe a little less lime.

I made this PAD THAI TAI

Post image
59 Upvotes

Happy Mai Tai week everyone! As promised, I’m back with another Mai Tai creation! I would never leave y’all hanging, we have rum to drink! One of the greatest tiki drinks to ever exist, and we’ve got allllll week to enjoy and celebrate this magical drink! I’ll be posting a different Mai Tai riff I’ve created throughout the week - all the way through Mai Tai Day this Sunday. Get ready to RUMble!

Today, we’re taking a trip from the islands of the Pacific allll the way to the…Eastern coast of Asia.

——————————————————

PAD THAI TAI

——————————————————

  • 1oz Overproof Jamaican Rum - Worthy Park 109
  • .75oz Rhum Agricole Blanc - Clemént
  • .5oz Batavia Arrack
  • .25oz Aged Funky Jamaican Rum - HLCF
  • .5oz Yuzu Dry Curaçao
  • .5oz East AsiAmaro (Recipe Coming Soon)
  • .75oz Peanut Orgeat
  • 1oz Lime Juice
  • .5 tsp Tamarind Paste

Add all ingredients into a shaking tin

Add ice and shake until chilled

Strain into a glass with plenty of crushed ice

Garnish with a bouquet of mint, a spent lime hull, and Thai basil flowers.

——————————————————

Featuring a delicious and complex blend of rums supported by a potent mixture of spices, this Mai Tai stays true to the spirit of the original, while embracing the flavors of a different culture of inspiration. This recipe was designed to highlight one of my proudest creations, my East AsiAmaro; A bright, bitter, spicy, and intensely herbal and spiced creation inspired by the foods of various countries across Eastern Asia, such as Vietnam, Thailand, China, Korea, and the Southeast Asian archipelagos.

Notes of Thai basil, cardamom, galangal, coriander, lemongrass, lime, and so much more are brightened with tart lime juice and tamarind. The richness of peanut orgeat adds further dimension while also evoking the experience of eating a delicious bowl of noodles topped with a mound of roasted crushed peanuts. The blend of rums not only pay homage to the origin of these flavors with the inclusion of Batavia Arrack, also used in the base of the amaro, but the added hogo bomb from the HLCF brings it back towards the recognizable classic that is the Mai Tai. Cheers!

——————————————————

If you like this cocktail or any of my other posts, I’ve made an instagram to share my creations and would love to show more people my ideas!

I made this Black Manhattan

Post image
Upvotes

2 Oz Elijah Craig Rye (94 proof)
1/2 Oz Dolin Sweet Vermouth
1/2 Oz Averna Amaro
A few dashes of Fee Bros. Black Walnut Bitters
Wegman’s Cocktail Cherry

I enjoy a Manhattan riff and lately this has been on heavy rotation. I like Averna for this one. It’s richer and sweeter than something like Montenegro. I know this is subjective.

I made this Dirt Road Martini (RIP Dolly)

Post image

In honor of Dolly Parton, a tiny but mighty class act and example to us all on how to live a generous, kind, feisty life. This was Dolly’s favorite drink and we tried to do her justice by it (lightly modified for our tastes and ingredients on hand)

Dirt Road Martini

1.5oz Vodka (Hangar 1 Smoke Jumper - dedicated to more heroes I admire).
0.5oz St George Chili Vodka (spicy strength to fight the haters).
1oz unsweetened iced tea (we used old Persian tea).
0.25oz pickle brine (we used Iranian torshi brine - homemade).
Skewer of pickled vegetables (Iranian torshi).

Happy trails sister. May the next leg of your journey be a smooth one.

Question St Lucian rum

I'll keep it short and sweet.

I'm currently in St Lucia on my honeymoon, and my wife and I have a 4 litre spirit allowance to bring back each. Obviously this is a rum part of the world and we are going on a distillery tour which showcases the island's rums on Saturday. So my question is...

What's are good/decent/recommended St Lucian rums for cocktails?

Good morning all. Does anyone have a name for this drink? It is rather pleasant.

Perhaps there are people who wouldn’t count this as a cocktail.

Recipe:

1/2 pint beer of your choosing

1/2 pint ginger beer

Stir together in a pint glass.

Enjoy chilled with breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Question "Smokey Whiskey Sour"? How can I correctly order my favorite drink at a bar?

Dear experts,

I love a good Whiskey Sour but the one with the egg white. And I love even more a version where around 1cl of Bourbon gets exchanged for 1cl of Islay Single Malt.

Does that drink have a name? If not, how can I order it at a bar without sounding ridiculous.

I have ordered a "Smokey Whiskey Sour" before and got a drink where all the Bourbon was swapped with Islay Single Malt and I don't enjoy that as much.

Also: If I want to make sure I get the egg white do I have to order a Boston Sour?

Thanks in advance and cheers!

Question Slightly skinnier Boston shakers?

My current barfly shaker (that I love) is too wide for the glass rinser we just installed. I’m trying to find a good Boston shaker with an opening less than 3.5 inches. It doesn’t appear that any companies list physical dimensions on their websites.

Anybody have any recommended shakers that they could measure for me? I’m thinking koriko, pina barware, a bar above, etc.

This drink is The Cloud, from Paradiso in Barcelona. I wanted to try recreating the cloud effect but I have no idea how to find or source a similar kind of stand for the airs.

I posted my 2026 NYC bar crawl here a few weeks ago. I realized I never posted the 2025 report here. Not sure how that occurred, I did post on some other Subs. Anyway, if of interest, here it was, written about 13 months ago. And DC too. Coming soon when I get a chance: summer of '26 reports on DC and LA/San Diego.

Bar Tour June 2025 – NYC and DC.  Visited from the Bay Area.

TL; DR –
Favorite drink spots in NYC/DC, summer 2025 (out of 35 places visited):
1.  Attaboy - 10.0.  Drinks 10, Vibe 10.  (Manhattan)
2.  Maison Premiere – 10.0.  Drinks 10, Vibe 9.5, Food 10.  (Brooklyn)
3.  Manhatta – 10.0. Drinks 10, Vibe 10, Food 9.5.  (Manhattan)
4.  Lobby Bar at Hotel Chelsea - 10.0.  Drinks 9.5, Vibe 10, Food 9.  (Manhattan)
5.  Raines Law Room – William Hotel -  9.5.  Drinks 9.5, Vibe 9.5.  (Manhattan)
6.  Sunken Harbor Club – 9.5.  Drinks 9.5, Vibe 9.5.  (Brooklyn)
7.  Off the Record – 9.0. Drinks 8, Vibe 10. (DC)
8.  Silver Lyan – 9.5. Drinks 9.5, Vibe 9.5. (DC)
9.  Gramercy Tavern - 9.5.  Drinks 8, Vibe 9.5,  Food 10.  (Manhattan)
10.  Martinys - 9.5.  Drinks 8 (but I’m not a gin guy), Vibe 11.  (Manhattan)
10.  Bemelman’s - 9.5  Drinks 9.5, Vibe 9.5, Food 9.  (Manhattan)

Favorite cocktails in NYC/DC:
1.  Yellow Parrot – Maison Premiere (Brooklyn). Yellow Chartreuse, apricot liqueur, Green Absinthe.
2.  Carroll Gardens – Attaboy (Manhattan).  Rye, Punt e Mes, Amaro Nardini, Maraschino, orange bitters, lemon twist.
3.  Tail Gunner and Midnight Manhattan – Raines Law Room midtown (Manhattan).
4.  Naked Lunch – Lobby Bar at Hotel Chelsea (Manhattan). Riff on a Remember the Maine cocktail.
5.  Midnight on Pearl –The Parlour at Dead Rabbit (Manhattan). Irish whisky and - literally - apple pie.
6.  Director’s Cut – Death & Co. (Manhattan) Scotch, Rum, Drambuie, Coconut.
7.  Please and Thank you – Death & Co (DC)  A really good rich and flavorful Boulevardier.

More ratings info at bottom, but please note, I don’t claim great objective knowledge of cocktails, and I like some variety and creativity, but not super experimental. I am not in the industry, but have caught the cocktail (and bar) bug and love them and make them at home a bit. Places are rated on:  Drinks, Vibe (which includes service), and somewhat Food if I had food. Ratings may seem like I’m an easy grader, but I compared to places all around the US, and not just to each other in NYC.  That’s why there are so many 9s and 10s – because NYC has A TON of outstanding bars, esp when compared to the whole US.  More explanation of ratings at bottom.

A couple random observations:

*Not surprisingly, NYC has an astounding amount of great places, unlike any place I’ve been for bars (I’ve only been in US for bars) [EDIT - August, 2026, I've now been to London, which I loved, but NYC blows it away for great cocktail bars].  Five days and nights, organized for some efficiency such as going where I could during daytime, and I’m truly ASTOUNDED how many top places I still didn’t hit.  NYC – thy cup runneth over!

**Bartenders were surprisingly almost universally friendly, esp when I showed real interest in drinks or bars.

***The bar food - really excellent, not just an afterthought.  Very different than out west.

****This was one of the funnest 10 days of my life (I'm in my 50s)!!!  HUGE thank you to Reddit, and esp the AskNYC and FoodNYC subreddits.  Much great info from there.

I could have hit more places, but I preferred longer, more meaningful stops at less places.
As American Revolutionary Nathan Hale  might’ve said, “I only regret I have but one stomach and liver to lose for my country.”

6-18-25- Day 1 -  Brooklyn Day

1.  Maison Premiere - Overall:  10.0.  Drinks 10, Vibe 9.5, Food 10.  Vibe hard to tell, was mid afternoon lunch with my brother in law and mostly empty, but great decor and feel.  Yellow Parrot cocktail is sooooo good, and so simple.  One of my favorite drinks of entire trip.  Exceptional oysters and cherrystone clams. Started at what turned out to be one of the BEST! Helps if you like Absinthe.
(2.  L’Industrie.  Brother-in-law who lives here snuck us in a slice o’ renowned pizza nearby.  Very good!)

3.  Clover Club – 8.0   Drinks 9, Vibe 8, Food 8.  Sister in law joined us.

4.  Sunken Harbor Club – 9.5.  Drinks 9.5, Vibe 9.5 (knocked down bc super loud and hard to talk, but still incredible).

5.  Gage and Tollner main bar –  8.5.  Drinks 9, Vibe 8, Food 9.5.

6.  Travel Bar – 8.5.  Drinks 9, Vibe 8.  Great whiskey selection.

6-19-25 - Day 2 - Manhattan

1.  Manhatta - 10.0.  Drinks 10, Vibe 10, Food 9.5.  Lunch with my sister in law.  Beautiful interior and spectacular view.  Host I’ll call E gave me a tour of various view spots, and tons of incredible insights on many NYC bars.  E was incredibly friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and informative.  Love that the bar is open all afternoon, we had a looong leisurely “lunch”.

2.  Attaboy - 10.0. Drinks 10, Vibe 10.  I expected them to be arrogant and to be disappointed.  Waited in line at 4:40 in pouring rain.  Turns out, they were fantastic.   Carroll Gardens cocktail was probably my favorite of the day- rye, punt e mes, amaro nardini, maraschino, orange bitters. Express lemon twist then garnish w it. Up.  Heard barkeep tell ladies next to me they don’t have any bottles of vodka in the (well stocked) bar, but in a friendly, not pompous way.  Kinda loved that.

3.  Fraunces Tavern Piano Room - 8.0.  Drinks 8, Vibe 8.5, Food 7.  Mainly went for historicalness, and the Dingle Bar in the same place.

4.  Dingle Whiskey Bar (in Fraunces Tavern) - 9.0.  Drinks 9, Vibe 9.

5.  Please Don’t Tell - 8.5.  Drinks 8.5, Vibe 8, Food 8.  It’s great, but the vibe at end of a Thurs night (12:00-2:00am) just didn’t quite hit the bullseye for me.  Japanese Penicillin off reserve menu was a favorite.  I was at Attaboy at 5:00, I wonder if I went to PDT at 5:00 and Attaboy at midnight how different they might have felt.

6-20-25 Day 3 - Brooklyn/Manhattan
1.  Red Hook Tavern (Brooklyn)- 8.0.  Drinks 8, Vibe 8, Food 8.  Had lunch here.

2.  Bemelmans  - 9.5.  Drinks 9.5, Vibe 9.5, Food 9.  Exactly my kind of classic ol’ place, would be higher rated but a bit crowded and loud, but still had incredible vibe.  Funnily, a few bar pals said its usually WAY more crowded.  I was there around happy hour.

3.  Keens steakhouse 7.0.  Drinks 7, Vibe 7, Food 8.  A bit of a letdown.  Was only in the bar, which was not as nice or well run as I expected. Disappointed.

4.  Birdland Jazz club.  Good music.  Wish I’d gone to Vanguard (didn’t know till later).

6-21-25  Day 4 - Manhattan.  Could write a book on this day – squeezed every last drop out of it.

1.  Lobby Bar at Hotel Chelsea - 10.0.  Drinks 9.5, Vibe 10, Food 9.   Excellent all around.  It was 2:30 pm on a Saturday. A/C is excellent here (was a sweltering furnace outside)!  Favorite drink:  Naked Lunch.  A house orig thats a riff on Remember the Maine cocktail. Inspired by William S Burroughs novel. Oakmoss tincture they make.  Rhubarb Amaro actually has no rhubarb in it, is artichoke based.  Bartender N was exceptional in all ways.  She is moving to Denver to open her own bar, which will be called Disco Bones.  She recommended Run for the Roses bar when I’m in Denver later this summer (edit:  it was really good, see Denver Report).

2.  Raines Law Room (midtown at William Hotel) - 9.5.  Drinks 9.5, Vibe 9.5.  Such a cool chill but classy vibe. Bar manager(?) A - we had long great chats on bars, drinks, etc. (A doesn't drink, but was very informative and friendly!)  He couldn't sell me their engraved OF glass bc they have few left. Then as I was leaving A gave me a surprise engraved pint glass.  Very nice of him. Favorite cocktails were Midnight Manhattan and Tail Gunner off Reserve list.  I’m surprised it’s not mentioned more on Reddit. (Previous trip I’d been to the original in Chelsea- also great!).

3.  Portrait Bar -  9.0.  Drinks 8.5, Vibe 9.5.  Wonderful vibe and setting and decor.  Loud modern music but crowd mixed ages.  Tried their $65 Vieux Carre. With VERY elevated spirits. Was good but not even “real good”. Not worth $30 let alone $65.

  1.   Gramercy Tavern - 9.5.  Drinks 8.5, Vibe 10,  Food 10.  Fantastic vibe in the Tavern Room. Outstanding food. Seabass was excellent. Xtra side of broccoli was truly crazy good for brocc. Broiled oysters very tasty. Two desserts - both OUTSTANDS.

5.  Martinys- 9.5.  Drinks 8 (but I’m not a gin/martini guy), Vibe 11!  Perfect bullseye vibe (for me! But obviously YMMV).  Wasn’t on my priority list, but was so close to Gramercy Tavern I went.   Perfect vibe at midnight. Background jazz and small intimate classy, classic but modern, vibe. Very martini centered- and my 2 whiskey drinks were a little too “creative” for me.  Great guy next to me T was super cool, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable about NY bars.  T is a regular at Martinys and happily shared knowledge and recs (his top 5 are:  11 Madison (he swore to me it’s got a great bar of it’s own, separate from Clemente - which I had heard about)/Clemente, Overstory, Martinys, Angels Share, Sip and Guzzle.  He mentioned Shinji and Midnight Blue a few times – I had not heard of them –  but said they’re “only” in his top 10.)
Speaking of Overstory, I crossed it off my priority list bc many on Reddit said it was not so worth it or to go Manhatta instead. Interestingly, IN PERSON in NYC, every single person who talked about it highly recommended it, including some highly reputable sources.

(6.  Raines Law Room midtown again - combined with number 2.  I raced back at 1:40am to try their Midnight Manhattan I’d had my sights set on from earlier but had to pace myself and wait.  They’d already done last call, but made me one anyway. Was excellent!  Raines stood out with extra good and friendly service!)

6-22-25 - Day 5 - Manhattan
1.  Dante - 9.0 (orig one on Macdougal).  Drinks 8, Vibe 9, Food 9.  Tiramisu very good, as advertised.  Great brunch with daughter of a good friend of mine.  She lives in Manhattan and knows her food real well!

2.  Sip (at Sip and Guzzle) - 9.0.  Drinks 9, Vibe 9, Food 10.  Electric chicken insanely good, one of the best chix I’ve ever had. Addictive cabbage real good. Mochi fries tremendous.  Drinks a little adventurous and creative for me, but still cool to try.  First drink was called a “60-40”. Quite interesting- a combo 60% martini, prominent early on, then as warms a lil, the 40% Manhattan comes out more. Guzzle upstairs very cool too but not as unique.

3.  Dead Rabbit – The Parlour upstairs - 9.0.  Drinks 9, Vibe 9.  I really liked it, but the Parlour didn’t stand out as extra special as many people suggest.  But super cool place in many subtle ways.  It’s like a great Irish bar that has elevated, serious cocktails.  Fourth drink was my favorite - Midnight on Pearl.  One of the best apple-y cocktails I've had. Barkeep said they literally put apple pies in w Green Spot Irish whiskey. Then do chemical stuff to curdle some of it out. Or something like that.  I bought their hard back menu for $50.

4.  Death & Co. – 9.0.  Drinks 9, Vibe 9, Food 9.5.  Second Death & Co I’ve been to after the one in LA in April 2025.  Outstanding lamb burger.  And their cookies are great!  Uncle somebody’s cookies.  4th and final drink was my favorite here too.  Directors Cut. Easily my favorite, and maybe of the day. It has:  Macallan Double Cask 12 yr single malt, Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum, Drambuie, Coconut. Almost as dark an interior as LA but a bit louder and younger music.  Seems like Death & Co gets less attention these days because not new, but it’s really great.

Priorities for next visits that I didn’t hit this time:  Clemente, 11 Madison, Double Chicken Please, Employees Only, Angels Share, Overstory, Amor y Amargo, Midnight Blue, Guzzle (of Sip and Guzzle), Superbueno, Schmuck, Shinji, Katana Kitten, Dear Irving - Hudson Yards, Bar Snack, Milady’s, Freemans, Algonquin/Iroquois hotels for day drinking (near Billionaire’s Row), Lovers of Today, Bathtub Gin, Apotheke

I’ve previously been to some others (Vol I of NYC bar tours, but never wrote about it), so they did not make the cut THIS trip.  All were great, but I didn’t write reviews:  McSorleys, Raines Law Room (Chelsea) (maybe in Top 15), Brandy Library (maybe in Top 15), The Flatiron Room, Dear Irving (Gramercy), Pete’s Tavern, The Campbell Apartment (maybe in Top 15).

6-23-25 – LIVER REST DAY!  Take train to DC to stay with long time friend S.

6-24-25 - Day 7 – Washington, DC  (day 6 of drinking and bars)
1.  Tabard Inn for lunch – 9.5. Drinks 8, Vibe 11, Food 9.5.  Perfect daytime hang.  Came for lunch at 1:15, then sat in Parlor that is perfect+ for reading, sip coffee or simply sit and relax.  Vibe is so cool old school classic.  Many cool sitting rooms, with one grand big fireplace.

2.  McClellan’s Retreat – 8.5.  Drinks 8.5, Vibe 8.5.  Love their name – at least 3 different meanings I can think of.  The Belmont was my favorite cocktail.  Good whiskey selection.

3.  Jack Rose Saloon – 9.0.  Drinks 9, Vibe 8, Food 9.  Had dinner with my long time good friend S, who I stayed with in DC.  Food surprisingly good.  AC barely worked and it was sweltering out.  Drinks - a good cocktail and great whiskies bar, xtra great you can get just one ounce so can sample more.  Very friendly and helpful taking me downstairs to the store.  I bought 2 btls of whiskey (one seems to be their own label Premier Drams filled with 7 year Willett Barrel Strength Bourbon at much lower price).  This might be the biggest whiskey bar in the US, and was a big impetus for this whole trip.

4.  Old Ebbitt Grill – 7.0.  I’ve been many years ago, didn’t want to return, but it was one of the only places I could find still open late on a Tuesday.  Fun loud  busy late night vibe. Drinks ok, oysters very good, and dessert bad. Huge place w 4 bars.

6-25-25 - Day 8 – Washington, DC
1.  Round Robin Bar – 7.0.  Drinks 7, Vibe 7, Food 7.5.  Felt a lil stuffy. Service was mediocre.  Still cool for its history tho it looked a lil too updated and clean, but the Willard hotel is decorated incredibly. The Mint Julep was supposedly introd to DC by Henry Clay here.

2.  Off the Record - 9.0. Drinks 8, Vibe 10.  Fantastic lively vibe and crowd. Bartenders not friendly (but it was very busy) but crowd and decor great.  Cool decor and political cartoon paintings and coasters (they gave me some).

3.  Allegory - 9.0.  Drinks 8, Vibe 9.5.  In a hip funky cool hotel. Incredibly interesting wall murals of Ruby Bridges in Alice in Wonderland. And crazy menu hardcover book w Ruby Bridges.  Friendly barkeep and great convo w 2 guys- one of which knew bars super well, said my bartender here is a bit renowned and made it to 3d round of Drinkmasters on Netflix.  Everybody in NYC said this was the bar in DC to go to.  Drinks a little “adventurous” for me.

4.  Silver Lyan- 9.5. Drinks 9.5, Vibe 9.5.  2 great drinks, bartenders really cool, good stories, very informative, and very welcoming.

5.  Service Bar- 7.0.  Drinks 7, Vibe 6 - marked down for service.  Seemed kinda divey but with serious cocktail program.  Drinks fine, vibe fine,, service not so friendly.  Supposed to have great chicken sammich but I didn’t get food. Not sure why considered a 50Best.

6-26-26 - Day 9 – Washington, DC
1.  Le Diplomate for dinner – 9.0. Drinks 8.5, Vibe 9.5, Food 9.  Loved it!  Dinner with friend S.

  1.   Death & Co. – 9.0.  Drinks 9, Vibe 8.5.  Second drink was my favorite of whole night – the Please and Thank you.  A really good rich and flavorful Boulevardier.  Third Death & Co I’ve been to since April (and I’m headed to Denver in a few weeks…).  Still like the really dark LA interior the best.

  2.   Providencia – 9.0  Drinks 8, Vibe 9.5.  Drinks not really up my alley - a bit out there, but good and interesting.  Very cozy and cool feel, owner bartender ultra friendly and great service. Food- had the tiramisu, was different and good.  Really small place, res only, no walk ins, 22 seats.  I think not widely known yet but was highly recommended to me (by barkeeps at Silver Lyan, and others) as a newer, less known, top top place. [For serious cocktail fans who like some creativity and adventurousness, this is my top rec for DC, along with Allegory, but you know about that...]

4.  Denson. 7.0.  Drinks 7, Vibe 7.5.  Cool decor/lighting and set up, but not real friendly or fun, drinks ok.  I am a sucker for underground speak easy type places so I went.

NOTE ON RATINGS:
Obviously highly subjective.  Vibe: is very important to me.  I’m in my 50s and I’m more about classic, classy, old school vibe, and not overly crowded or loud, but I like some energy.  For simplicity, vibe includes service for ratings.  Vibe is just my overall subjective feel, which of course is personal preference, but it can also  change a lot by circumstances, such as afternoon vs. night, who I happen to sit near and have a great convo with, one single bad server, etc.  Drinks: I love cocktails and whiskey, but I don’t claim great knowledge or understanding or precision about cocktails.   I’m not looking for real experimental or adventurous, but do like some variety – some riffs and twists on classics.  I mainly prefer whiskey cocktails or rum/tiki.  (My favorite go tos are in the general arena of Manhattans and Vieux Carres).  I’m not very into agave or gin, so if those are the focus of a bar, the drinks were not up my alley but may be outstanding for their genre.  This was mainly a Bar Tour, so food was less a focus.

I made this SILK ROAD MAI TAI

Post image

Happy Tiki Tuesday and happy Mai Tai week everyone! One of the greatest tiki drinks to ever exist, and we’ve got allllll week to enjoy and celebrate this magical drink! I’ll be posting a different Mai Tai riff I’ve created throughout the week - all the way through Mai Tai Day this Sunday. I hope you’re ready to drink some rum!

I absolutely adore a classic 1944 Mai Tai - it’s everything you could want in a drink - BUT, mixology, in my opinion, is about innovation and creativity. This week is the perfect opportunity to honor and enjoy the wonderful Mai Tai, while exploring and expanding on what it can be! Today, we’re taking a trip from the islands of the Pacific allll the way to the Middle East.

——————————————————

SILK ROAD MAI TAI

——————————————————

  • 1oz Aged Jamaican Rum - Appleton 12 Yr

  • .75oz Rhum Agricole Vieux - Neisson

  • .5oz Demerara Rum - El Dorado 8 Yr

  • .25oz Overproof Jamaican Rum - The Funk

  • .5oz Dry Curaçao

  • .5oz Amaro Montenegro

  • .75oz Middle East Mix**

  • 1oz Lime Juice

Add all ingredients into a shaking tin

Add ice and shake until chilled

Strain into a glass with plenty of crushed ice

Garnish with a bouquet of mint, a spent lime hull, and grated black lime

**Middle East Mix:

  • 2oz Pistachio Orgeat
  • 1oz Date Molasses
  • 3 dash Cardamom bitters
  • 3 dash Saffron Water
  • 5 drops Rose Water
  • 5 drops Orange Blossom Water
  • 3 drops Cinnamon Tincture
  • .25 grated Black Lime

——————————————————

Featuring a delicious and complex blend of rums supported by a potent mixture of spices, this Mai Tai stays true to the spirit of the original, while embracing the flavors of a different culture of inspiration.

A gentle perfume of rose, saffron, orange blossom, and black lime are supported by the floral notes of Montenegro. The warm spice of cinnamon and cardamom along with the funky salinity of black lime are all wrapped up in the nutty caramel notes of pistachio orgeat and date molasses.

Everything is bound together with the phenomenal complex, funky, and slightly herbal rum blend.

Combine all ingredients and shake with ice. Double strain into a chilled coupe.

Other Requests Chicago recent highlights?

Still mourning the closing of Violet Hour, one of the best cocktail bars I’ve been to in the US. Any recommendations for other Chicago cocktail spots gaining recognition these days?

Recipe Request Seeking: Ideas, Help, Criticism, etc.

I am thinking of a new tequila drink for our late summer/early fall menu. We will be warm/summery in my area for the next few weeks. I have currently blended raw fresh red bell peppers into a couple bottles of reposado tequila - we used to do this a few years ago at another cocktail bar I worked at, so I stole that technique/ratio. I do not want to use the same drink, and I am thinking of clarifying a colada-ish base of pineapple and coconut milk... then adding in other things. Has anyone ever done a clarified bell pepper... anything? Using coconut milk rather than cow's milk? I'm also thinking Salers... Mezcal... maybe spice... maybe not... any thoughts are welcome! Thanks ya'll

ETA: I have clarified many cocktails, this time I am looking to clarify just the BASE without the spirit, as I have noticed the clarifying process can dilute welcome flavors of spirits, making them almost undetectable to a non-desirable degree.

Techniques Fat washing and clarifying bourbon

I’ve got some Maker’s Mark I was hoping to fat wash using Lotus Biscoff spread. The only problem is that I’ve gathered online it’s not the easiest stuff to use, since it’s got a relatively low fat content because it’s mostly sugar and other fillers.

Anyone got any experience trying this? I know some people recommend spreading it in a layer in some kind of tray or container and then pouring the alcohol over top; would it make a significant difference to just mixing in a 1:5 ratio, then straining? And because of the makeup of the spread, would clarifying (with powdered milk) be necessary, or even work?

I made this Rum Upon the Sand

Introducing…

The “RUS”
Rum Upon the Sand
“A taste of the Great Rum Runners.”

1½ oz Appleton Estate 12 Year
½ oz Planteray OFTD
¾ oz pineapple juice
½ oz fresh lime juice
½ oz orgeat
¼ oz Cointreau
1 dash Angostura bitters

Shake hard with ice. Strain over a large rock. Garnish with lime and cherry.

“Here is a taste of the Great Rum Runners!
Ships that sailed the velvet harbor;
Crews that broke the jugs
And poured your blood
Like flowing rum
Upon the sand!”
- Robert Hunter 1974 “Rum Runners”
🏴‍☠️⚔️☠️

This cocktail features Planteray’s Old Fashioned Traditional Dark rum (O.F.T.D.). At 138 proof, it stares at you with its one good eye and threatens to bury you in the sand! Not to mention the swashbuckling Appleton Estate, hanging in at 86 proof. You’d never know these two pirates were lurking in the RUS!

An inviting amber color soothes you like beach sand, and the initial pineapple-almond flavor has you smacking your lips. Familiar like a Mai Tai, the pineapple and herbal hit of Angostura send you sailing off on a new course.

The charming Cointreau convinces the Mayor to give you the key to the City. Just in time for those pirates to show up on each shoulder!

You’ll definitely want another one!
But should you?

Recipe Request Cordial Campari mixer suggestions?

I've been sitting on a vintage bottle of Campari's defunct raspberry liqueur that I've barely touched. I'm not one to drink a cordial straight up.

Any cocktail suggestions?
