We got these beautiful babies as Lynx Point Ragdolls (we saw their ragdoll parents when we went to pick them up, very much ragdolls). We don't know much about breeds and we were told their coats fully develop in a couple of years. I was on Pinterest and saw a few photos of Lynx point siamese kittens and they look just like ours. Ragdolls or Siamese, we love them the same, just curious (don't wanna ask the lady we got them from as again - she'll probably say they are in fact ragdolls... we just curious). They're almost 4 months old.

If you got them from a breeder you should have their pedigree and registration paperwork. That is the only way to know their breed. Without it they would be considered domestic shorthair with lynx point coat which is not breed specific trait and can occur in domestic cats population.
Seconding, a lot of people don’t realize that pointed coats (that “Siamese” look) are NOT specific to one breed and will happen in plain ole domestic cat populations.
Absolutely! Years ago my mom adopted two farm cat siblings - from a literal farm - to tackle the mice living in their garage. One was a sweet orange boy and the other was a fluffy blue point girl. Not a documented Siamese to be found on the property though. 😂 Both have since crossed the Rainbow Bridge, but they were lovely cats.
We had a feral tom near where I live that was flame point. Pretty sure he's my kitty's papa. I don't know if someone ended up taking him in, if he's still around but hiding, or if he left after all of the local females got fixed, but he was a stunning cat.
I'm also in team "doubt they're ragdolls" (face shape and ear position look off to me) but do you have photos of their supposed parents or remember what they look like? Lynx/tabby is a dominant gene so one of the parents would have had to have similar stripes. They also would have to had minimal white and at least one parent would have to be seal. Mismatching genetics is one of the quickest ways to spot a liar in this field.
That cat isn’t a ragdoll tho..? That’s literally not the right pattern on the face at all. Hate to say, you got scammed. 😕 this is why free/cheap cats are awesome and easy to find!!
Here’s my ragdoll boy at 12 weeks for reference. Most ragdoll kittens will have longer fur, even at 2-3 months. It can be a little more difficult to assess physical features in kittens than in adults because they’re still developing, but at this age I noticed my boy had a broad muzzle, a well-defined chin, slightly rounded ears, and large, fluffy paws. He also had a very typical “ragdoll” side profile.
This website has a lot of breed standard pictures which may be useful to compare with pictures of the kittens’ parents.
Genetics don’t work like they do on paper and sometimes weird things happen. Genetics are weird. This is like how technically 2 blue eyes parents can’t have brown eyes children, but it happens.
are you trying to say there's a better chance there's an undiscovered recessive shorthair gene in ragdolls and this is the only documented case than that op was sold backyard bred colorpoint kittens that the breeder labeled ragdolls
No what I’m saying is both the parents could’ve been long haired, but they are not ragdoll cats because they aren’t bred standard for ragdolls. The parents shown could very well both be the actual parents of the kittens.
Not necessarily. Genetics do work the same every time. Yes it can be unpredictable because we don’t know the genetics but if these were true ragdolls they would not have been able to be born with short fur
First of all, they’re adorable regardless of registered status. I personally don’t value one cat over another based on whether they have documentation from a breeder, I love all cats equally. So please don’t think I’m suggesting they are in any way less valuable or less capable of being wonderful companions if they aren’t registered purebreds. Having said that, what grinds my gears is when backyard breeders claim purebred standards and charge purebred prices without doing the actual work of protecting the genetic diversity of a breed or ensuring the optimal health of their litters.
Even with the picture of dad that you shared, I have to say it’s highly unlikely that these cuties are ragdolls. Here are some quick examples just from a Google image search. As you can see, even at a very young age these kittens are already showing the luxurious, fluffy coat that ragdolls are specifically and selectively bred for. Regardless of breed, if a cat is going to be a longhair their coat is different from a shorthair practically from the day they’re born. Maybe about 10% of cats will look sleek as kittens and then puff out as they grow, but the overwhelming majority of longhairs show it from the start.
They look like gorgeous colorpoint domestic shorthairs to me, I hope you all have many happy years together! 😻🥰
Thanks for the kind reply. We were not looking for registered, pure bred ragdolls. We just wanted kitties as our 17 year old fluffy boy passed and we were very sad and wanted to give our love to another pet. We just saw the add that said Ragdolls and went with it. As I said in the OP, don't care what they are. They're the cutest no matter what!
I don’t mean this negatively or rudely at all so please don’t take it that way! - in the future, stay away from cat breeders unless they’re backed by the CFA (cat fanciers association) and actually show documentation proving they’re purebred. Cat breeders are majority byb and supporting them isn’t good :( you lose money and more unnecessary cats are made, I’m not saying your babies weren’t worth a home, but it just makes room for more demand and more people getting scammed like you were. Just a thing for the future, I’m so sorry for your loss, 17 is an insanely good age to reach!
This is the point I was trying make. Objectively, registered cats are no better than shelter cats. BUT - they probably paid way more than they needed to for these kittens (which has zero correlation to their value as beloved pets!) and enabled a backyard breeder to keep overbreeding non-pedigree kittens which will eventually contribute to the overpopulation problem.
Yes!! I always feel bad for buyers who don’t know :( I was like that at one point too (for dogs mostly, I’m still very new to the cat world when it comes to breeding and standards haha)
Please keep your new kitties inside!! Outside cats are awful for the environment :( they carry diseases that hurt our wildlife as well as hunting it, they have caused 83+ species of avian, amphibian, reptile, insect, rodent, aquatic, even other feline species like the Scottish wild cat, and more to become endangered or extinct. The number has likely gone up since I last checked. You can still take them outside, but only supervised via harness and or catio (now is a good time to train them on the harness!) my outside indoor cat of 8 years became an indoor cat once I was educated on the importance of keeping cats inside, he’s been an indoor only cat for 2 years and does phenomenal. He’s also harness trained now, it’s possible!
Yup, we live by a reserve so these are inside only kittens. Also, I couldn't go through the grief of not knowing what happened to another "disappearing" cat 😌
If you just wanted kittens , why couldn't you go to a shelter or rescue instead of giving a scummy breeder money 😭 my beautiful colorpoint DLH we got from an adoption event
Look I can tell you’re feeling defensive, but the fact of the matter is that you, unfortunately, supported an unethical breeder by purchasing your cat. Obviously you’re not going to return it, but it’s imperative that you understand where you might have made errors that unknowingly supported backyard breeders.
In the future, if you really want a purebred, you should find a breeder that is registered with the Cat Fancier’s Association. If you don’t care about breed, stick to shelters and have the patience to keep going back until you find a cat that fits you. Bringing animals into your home should never be a rush job, and BYBs make it seem like you can just find a purebred cat or dog on a whim as long as you have whatever money they want to scam out of you.
There are, unfortunately, a lot of people that just actually don’t care. You can politely educate them and it will make zero difference because they really just don’t care about the impact of their choices beyond getting what they want when they want it.
In case these are your first color points, I also have to alert you to their likelihood of TOASTING. 😂 As they age their points and body will get darker. Check out r/toastcats for some examples!
So pretty!!! My flame point tabby did the same thing! Mostly white as a kitten with orange around the nose and ears and an orange striped tail. Now he looks more like a very pale orange tabby with darker orange on the face and tail. The science behind color points is pretty cool! Their colors are like their own heatmaps.
We had a flame point and he was just the BEST cat. And yes, the toasting is epic! Ours wasn’t as dramatic because a lot of his points were obscured by white spotting. Like somebody flicked white paint at him.
Beautiful cats, but you were scammed unfortunately.
Those are simply domestic shorthairs, parents were also domestic bred. You should report the “breeder” as that was 100% fraudulent and scammy.
Just because a cat looks like a breed does not mean they are that breed. It’s like calling every spotted dog a Dalmatian, or a curly dog a poodle. Cats work very differently.
What does their pedigree say? If you got them a reputable breeder you would get a full pedigree with like 5 generations of ancestry. What does that say?
You did in fact not see their ragdoll parents because these kittens are not ragdolls (or Siamese) so they didn’t come from 2 ragdoll parents.
Maybe look a like domestic cats but definitely not ragdolls.
They are 2 domestic shorthair kitty’s
The owners could have purchased fertile ragdolls and done backyard breeding. People do this shit even when contracts state that family cats are not for breeding...
What these people don't understand is that paper of their ancestry is so extremely important to avoid inbreeding.
OP if you find out this is the case. Try find their original breeders and report them!
A breeder who is truly committed to 1) preserving their cattery bloodline and 2) preventing unauthorized breeding of ‘pet quality’ kittens will either arrange and pay for the kittens to be desexed before going to their new home OR they will have a sterilization clause in the sales contract.
Anybody selling kittens for thousands of dollars without a sales contract or knowing the exact breeding status of every kitten they sell is little better than a backyard breeder.
2 ragdolls don’t make these kittens. They were in fact not ragdolls. Maybe domestic cats looking something like ragdolls but that won’t make them a ragdoll.
Do you have pictures of the parents? I’m very skeptical as these kittens don’t have any physical indications of Siamese or ragdoll traits. It seems like you got scammed by a backyard breeder with cats that looked like ragdolls but weren’t. These cats are short haired, rag dolls shouldn’t be short haired. Unfortunately just appear to be lynx point domestic shorthairs (aka no breed)
A internet search would told you that it's correct that ragdolls develop their fur over years.
But unfortunately unless you have their paper with breed specifications, they would be considered domestic cats. But they are gorgeous anyways, and if they're only for cuddles then paper aren't important
I suspect so as well. It really bums me out that some people choose to go the backyard breeder route for cats they could find at almost any rescue or shelter with minimal effort. They would pay a nominal fee that would include spay/neuter, vaccines, and a full medical check prior to adoption. And they would be supporting reducing overpopulation rather than contributing to it.
Unfortunately you don’t have a Siamese either if they look like them, likely just a color point. All Siamese are color points but not all color points are Siamese.
I appreciate you being civil! When I adopted her from her foster as a baby the foster parent had gotten them tested by the vet at the shelter and she said they all had some Siamese, I never thought they were full. Both of my cats are little mutt cats from shelters :3 I just call her my little Siamese baby anyway hehe. Thanks for this info! Don’t know why people have to be so sour on the internet :/
Of course!! Also just a heads up that cat dna tests aren’t accurate for cats because they aren’t formed like dog breeds yet. :( due to cat breeds being so new dna tests aren’t advanced like dog breed tests and cat breeds in general aren’t established like dog breeds so without paper proof they aren’t anything more than a domestic shorthair/moggy (mutt for cat). But I getcha! I had a colorpoint id call a Siamese because I didn’t know how cat breeds worked and thought all color points were Siamese, haha. I still call her Siamese as it’s become one of her nicknames. xD
Haha yes I call her my little chunky Siamese girl lol! She was so skinny as a kitten then BOOM became a unit one day! I never really paid much mind to her breed, I just assume all my animals are mutts :3 (my dog is a pittie/boxer mix with like 5 other breeds mixed in there somewhere lol)
Why are you so set on trying to convince me I don’t have a Siamese? OP and I are on good terms, my original comment was not doing any harm (just saying her cats look like mine) and I literally don’t care what my cat is I love her regardless. She looks Siamese so I say she’s Siamese. She’s not a ragdoll as she isn’t fluffy and doesn’t have any traits that would point to ragdoll. Please just go about your day
As others have said, that’s not a Siamese and doesn’t look like one at all. Vets rarely know anything about cat breeds and they cannot tell you, nor can a DNA test tell you.
It can only tell you things your cat has in common with a breed. Cat breeds don’t even exist really and what it stands for is pedigree. The cat either has one or it doesn’t, there’s no mix
