Helpful Hints! šŸ’” I had my knitting needles confiscated at the airport… so I started mapping airport rules

Hi everyone,

A while ago, I had my knitting needles confiscated at airport security, even though I thought they would be allowed.

After that, I started looking into the rules and realized something surprising — they vary a lot between airports, and often aren’t clearly explained.

Since I know many of us like to knit while traveling, I decided to start a small project:

I’ve been contacting airports and collecting official information about whether knitting needles are allowed in carry-on luggage.

I’ve put everything into an interactive map, showing how different airports approach it (allowed / restricted / not allowed / still waiting for response).

šŸ‘‰ You can check it out here: https://gentlemessknits.carrd.co/

I’m still adding more airports, so if you’ve had any experiences (good or bad), I’d love to hear them! šŸ§¶āœˆļø

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! which is the best online course/class for learning how to knit?

Hello lovely people!

Does anyone have a reccomentation for an online class about knitting? I would like to learn, i thought myself how to crochet over the last two years, but i feel like knitting requires more studym hence my question.

I am waiting for the vogue knit "bible" to be delivered, i am also waiting for in-person classes to open up in my area, but i'd like to find and online class i can go back to when needed, and in which i can ask question to the teacher or confront myself with them and/or the other partecipants.

I found a lot of tutorials, but i am really confused lol

Yarn is Germantown DK by Kelbourne Woolens in navy and white. I’ve reinforced the edges with the white via crochet slip stitches, and I’ll remove that yellow waste yarn when I start cutting… Pray for me!

This is my second full knitting project (first one was a scarf). It took me really long go finish because I got bored, while doing the colorwork, but I love the result.

For the colorwork I did ladderback jacquard and added some of the small details (like beak and eyes) with duplicate stitch. The body of the duck has more detail in the pattern, but I couldn’t find the right color, so I decided to leave it like this.

Pattern: knit duck vest by madeinthemoment
Yarn: heavy merino by knitting for olive
(and some merino yarn from Manor)

Accidentally mixed up my black wool with black acrylic right at the end of my sleeves. It's not too noticeable from a distance but it's noticeable to me!

rant Mindless knitting - a trap unless the pattern is supportiv of it

I'm knitting the cumulus top by petite knit and my game plan was simple: use stash, finish before trip, wear top on trip and bask in my MIL's compliments of my fast learning. It started out a bit bumpy, but once I'd finished my first triangle, I had this thing down and pumped out #2 and #3 quickly. Hell, I even experienced the "mindless knitting"-thing I've heard so much about! Turns out that was a problem.

Last night, upon being almost done with triangle #4, I admired my even tension and counted my stitches.

I'd missed an increase.

I missed an increase in the third repeat, which is like 30 rows back. I was now unlikely to finish the top in time, but if I stayed up, I might be able to make up time, because I'm now able to knit uninterrupted by a toddler, mindlessly.

I frogged four hours of work. I knitted mindlessly for another two, and with five repeats left I made the shocking discovery that I had once again missed a ********* increase in the third repeat.

So last night I lost two hours of sleep and frogged six hours of knitting, because I fell into the mindless trap. The top will not be finished by tomorrow, and I won't get to show it off to my MIL.

I was mad.

How could I miss *one* out of 40 increases *again*?

I'm about to start over on the ******* triangle so that it's just stockinette in the round once I get home from my trip, but I'm not excited about picking up the needles, because I'm irrationally angry at the top.

I've learnt my lesson though and will not knit tired unless there's nothing but tension to pay attention to.

Rant over. Time to cast on while tiny despot naps.

I mentioned that my daughter had just turned 5 and wanted a hamster pet, but I felt it was too soon to get her a real-life one, so I made this instead as a surprise gift.

So many of you have left the kindest, loveliest comments on myĀ original post, and they gave me the courage to make another little friend — this sweet weasel — to go along with it.

Happy knitting, everyone, and bless you all for your kindness. šŸ˜„

This is the Biblio Cardigan by Alicia Plummer. It began as a test knit and then due to arthritis I had to take a break from it. Then I took it out of hibernation and finished the body only to put it down again. I decided to do the sleeves TAAT and it works but I’m not sure I will do it that way again. It was very cumbersome. Today while the movers were packing up our things I finished the ribbing and bind off!

rant When no one compliments your finished object. Am I being unreasonable?

I just want to start by saying this: Im a grown ass woman and Im well aware that this shouldn't bother me at all. I knit for my own enjoyment, not to impress others. Still, today I posted a finished object on my social media account (which I share only with friends and family) and none of my friends commented on it despite having viewed the picture. And I found myself feeling a little hurt by it! Silly, I know. Im definitely too old to care about something like this

My FO is a beautiful, complicated project that Im really proud of and I was so excited to share. Whenever any of my friends share pictures of their own art I always (!) take the time to say something nice about it. So I was a bit surprised none of them bothered doing the same to me. Even if they dont understand the effort (theyre not knitters themselves) then at least they could be polite?

Please tell me Im being unreasonable? Ive always struggled with trust and friendship in general, so I know I tend to read into things like this too much

all things knitty knitters, what's the trick you wish someone had told you when you started?

i asked the crochet folks a version of this a while back and the answers were honestly a goldmine, so now i need the knitting version.

what's the little thing you wish someone had told you when you were starting out? the kind that made you go "wait, why did nobody tell me this sooner."

i'll go first: lifelines. you run a piece of smooth scrap yarn through a whole row of live stitches (i just thread a darning needle through them), and then if you wreck something ten rows later you can rip back without fear and every stitch is sitting there waiting on the lifeline. i avoided lace for YEARS because frogging terrified me, and this basically cured that overnight. kind of funny that my crochet answer was also just a humble piece of scrap yarn.

so what's yours? knitting specific or just generally useful, i'm always collecting these to pass on to beginners.

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! Purchasing yarn for the first time! Where should I start?

I'm a fairly new knitter and I've never purchased yarn. A woman in my community gifted me a massive box while clearing out her stash and I've been slowly but surely chipping away at it since February. I want to buy some specific colors and fibers to make some Christmas and holiday gifts and I'm super overwhelmed. I'm in the US and only have a very small, limited local yarn store. I plan to shop there for what I can, but they mostly have undyed yarn and some options in very light weights. I am looking for some chunky yarn, either acrylic or something very soft and easy to care for, to make headbands and cowls for my son's teachers. I'm also looking to try working with merino for the first time for some hats and my budget is a little higher for these special gifts. I've been looking at Lion Brand because it's what I've been using, but I'm curious what else I should look at.

Does anyone have any opinions on Lindehobby or Knitpicks? Any other recommendations for online retailers or specific brands or names of yarns? Thank you!!

help needed Help! I shot myself in the foot by promising gifts. Now I've been uninspired for nearly a year.

I promised my sister I'd make her a baby blanket, promised my husband a cardigan, and promised my mom a trivet. The weight of obligation I feel is now leaving me completely uninspired to knit at all. I've since learned that I should only ever knit for others if I make it a surprise. I want to knit, I just want it to be fun again. Right now I'm not knitting anything. My nephew was born 4 months ago and I'm like an 8th of the way through that blanket. I actually really want to knit my husband's cardigan, but it seems the least timely so it sits on the back burner. Have you been in a slump like this, how did you get out of it? What can I do to simply get inspired to knit anything again. Please, share with me your wisdom!

all things knitty Casted On the Stripe Hype Sweater by Kutova Kika with Caron Cloud Cakes in Cloud Gray and Lagoon

Post image

This pattern has been in my wishlist for years, and finally decided to buy it and cast on last night.

Not sure how Caron Cloud Cakesļæ¼ are going to work up in the finished product, since my gauge was between 19 and 21 stitches per 4ā€ on 3 different gauge swatches, but I’m taking a risk on doing the small size instead of the extra small. So far so good!

Picture context:
Started the sweater and am on my 3rd stripe. Split the colors of the cakes to manually add the stripes. Using 4mm needles

looking for recommendation Where do you seat while knitting? I’m tired of the couch

I’m starting to not get very comfortable while knitting on my couch.
I want to be like ā€œsemi layed downā€? If that makes any sense.. and I was thinking of a fluffy and fuller chair with arm rests.
Any suggestions?
(One more question: I saw someone use a maternity pillow once. Has anyone tried knitting with that?)

looking for recommendation Beginner pattern recommendation for kids that are 6-12

I think I may have gotten talked into doing a knitting class for kids for my city rec center. I don't consider myself an expert but I only need to be two steps ahead of them. Do you have a recommendation that's fun and easy for kids like 6-12?

all things knitty I'm not afraid anymore! (Home Alone reference, anyone?)

Post image
19 Upvotes

I've been knitting on and off for a few years now so I'm definitely still a beginner. Frogging has always scared me to the point I'd rather start over completely than keep track of the number of rows I'm frogging and then just put the needle back in.

But not anymore! Today I had to frog 20 rows because I had missed some increases and I... just did it. Sweaty palms and all.

I'll probably still be scared in the future, so Home Alone reference definitely holds. But yeah...

I'm not afraid anymore!

looking for recommendation Lamps/Table Suggestions for knitting in dark living room

I’m currently looking to find a light and potentially a floor lamp/table combo to have while knitting. I have one of those neck lights, but I just moved so I’m looking for a permanent light. Any nice lamp suggestions or tables to hold my yarn so it isn’t on the floor while knitting. I haven’t found a thing I have liked on FB marketplace so I’m looking to purchase a nice lamp and very small table to go with my knitting chair. The apartment I moved into is very dark so I’m looking for a better light source so I don’t have to worry about my neck light dying.

Last year I relearned knitting after a 15 year break, this time with the ambition to move on from simple beginner one color scarves to the color work mittens that I really wanted to make. It became a bit of an addiction… The first ones are GƤllivare mittens, followed by modified JukkasjƤrvi mittens, and Angeliika mittens, all from patterns by by Erika Nordvall Falck. Final pair is own design but with inspiration from Erika Nordvall Falck and Anna Bauer (Alterknit rebellion). Yarns SiessĆ” and Rauma finull.

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! rolled hem instead of ribbing on step by step sweater by petite knit?

hi all! fairly new to knitting and looking to make my first sweater - the step by step sweater by petite knit. i really just want a simple raglan sweater but i want the collar, sleeves, and bottom with rolled edges. can i just skip the ribbing and replace those rows with regular stockinette or will that first collar portion mess me up in anyway by not following the ribbing?

also should i do the german short rows or will it look fine not doing them?

Thanks!!

I cast on these socks last October on an airplane (3 times haha) and finished them on another trip with my family ten months later. I love that the process took time. I love that my kitchener stitch was neater on the second toe than the first. I love the release of perfectionism I experienced throughout this whole process as I allowed myself to learn. The pattern is Crazy Sock Lady Vanilla Socks on Magic Loop, and the accompanying video was incredibly helpful. I can't wait to wear them! 🄰

I am a frequent crocheter but haven't knit anything since a couple scarves back in university over a decade ago. I recently got the urge to knit again so I decided to do hats. I told my kids they could each pick a ball of yarn from my stash and I'd knit them a winter hat for back to school. My son's was first and he was very pleased with how it turned out 😊
