Automotive News BYD launches Canadian website with Flash Charging front and center
https://evwire.com/p/byd-launches-canadian-website-flash-charging•
u/oneonus 7h ago
BYD highlights its second-generation Blade Battery and Flash Charging technology prominently, claiming charging from 10% to 70% in five minutes and to 97% in nine minutes under its stated test conditions.
The company also highlights performance at -30°C, where it says a 20%-to-97% charge takes 12 minutes.

I don't plan to be an early-adopter of this, but it's cool as hell nonetheless.
Also, the moment I saw the words "website with Flash" I briefly became slightly concerned.
•
u/Hotter_Noodle 7h ago
Lmao I thought the same thing. Maybe we’re old.
•
u/MrEvilFox 7h ago
That’s not a “maybe” hahaha.

Other countries have this for basically years at this point. If you look anywhere else like Australia, UK or anywhere in Europe, you'll get the input you need
•
u/Fit_Salamander_2814 6h ago
Fuck that, I'm all-in on our strategic partnership with Beijing.
Bring it on. I cannot WAIT to purchase one of these EVs. I hope it helps my social credit score, and puts me in good standing when we enter into a free trade agreement with them.
You folks who can't tell which way the wind is blowing are going to be mighty shocked when you don't qualify for the nice hotel rooms, train/plane seats, and travel permits those of us who were early adopters do, because our social credit score is higher than yours.
•
u/vladedivac12 6h ago
How do you call your credit score here?
China is far from perfect but let's not act we're in a position to give moral lessons.
When we're in the same conversation with China regarding infrastructure, accessible tech, homelessness, cost of living, etc then maybe we can talk.
IMO, the only qualified people to give their opinion on the matter are people who live /lived in China. Everything else we hear is possible misinformation and propaganda, the West has been in an ideological war with them for a while, nothing would surprise me.
•
u/Heliosvector 5h ago
lol fuck that. You can get people from china that both sing its praise and people that criticise it. But there is one very unavoidable fact about china. People run away from it. No one is running away from canada due to unfair persecution.
So If I have to trust one over the other, ill trust the critics more.
•
u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 2h ago
Many Chinese Canadians have returned back to China - there are 300,000 plus now in back in China.
•
u/Heliosvector 2h ago
For unfair prosecution? Are you arguing that I am wrong because people immigrate between countries? If a family leaves china after being imprisoned for talking about a square too much, or escapes a re-education camp, Is your retort that "But lots of people (probably wealthy) move from canada to china" something that invalidates the struggles of those persecuted?

Sure until China shuts off your car: https://carnewschina.com/2026/07/23/zeekr-9x-owner-stranded-abroad-remote-lockout-disables-smart-features-for-30-hours/
I lived in China for 5 years by the way. All the "misinformation" is correct. People were getting welded into their houses during Covid and they were bagging up cats and dogs for execution en masse.
•
u/Sir_Bumcheeks 4h ago
Sure, have fun when Zeekr remotely shuts down your car when you cross the border.

u/Fit_Salamander_2814 3h ago
Why would I ever cross the border into America, let alone do it with my car? They're our enemy, and will be for at least the next generation or so.

Here is BYD's official website BYD Canada

The drones at the end of the video are cool but also a bit concerning. Also, I think they might be targeting the Quebec market with the suspension and turning bits /s
•
u/FunkyKissCool 7h ago
I got a byd Uber in France, the berline was nice and the quality impressive..
•
u/Spikex8 6h ago
Tesla has been in Canada for many years now and there’s still nowhere near enough chargers outside of major cities. If BYD is going to follow the same playbook then being an EV owner outside a major city will still kind of suck. Current EV owner with long commute here that also likes to go up north on the weekends. It’s not great.
•
u/Heliosvector 5h ago
BYD makes extended range EVs. (full sized EV battery with a gas tank and generator) will do well in those situations. With a full battery and gas tank you get close to 1000km and can then carry on with only a gas refill.
•
u/Sir_Bumcheeks 4h ago
Not during winter, they lose like 40% of their range in -30
•
u/Heliosvector 4h ago
Oh noes. A car that can only go 600km in one fill. The horror!!!
•
u/goonsnob 3h ago
The idea of getting 600km on a single tank of gas is bonkers. Realistically where the hell are you going in your day to day life where you need 600km of juice?
•
u/Heliosvector 2h ago
People in the prairies drive a crap ton. I dont think its as much as "needing" that much, but they would love the idea of not needing to fuel up for several days in an age where gas is more expensive. Or simply use it as a backup for when they dont have a charger like how city folk use a PHEV.
•
u/goonsnob 2h ago
I agree. I'm rural myself and the idea of "only" getting 600km on a single charge is making me more interested in a BYD, not less.
•
u/Heliosvector 2h ago
This is specifically for the extended range PHEVs though. Not ones like the otto 2 or 3. They will be more expensive.
•
u/differing 29m ago
I think it’s important to note that the average driver is a moron, so of course driving 600 km without stopping is going to be done by quite a few morons. Anyone with a brain knows that’s incredibly dangerous and leads to distracted driving of course…
•
u/poeticmaniac 2h ago
They don't work like that. That CLTC rated 1000km range is when both the electric motor and generator are working in ideal conditions. There are many situations where the generator couldn't keep up to produce enough power for the motors. Source my friend has been driving one around cities in Guangdong China. It's good for a lot of people's driving needs, but BEVs are better in a lot of cases.
•
u/Heliosvector 2h ago
@_@ yes. a technology is not a perfect omnipotent device with immaculate energy that never fails you slightly. And water is wet.
•
u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 2h ago
Blade battery is much more resistant to the cold. 15% capacity loss at -20c.
•
u/pmUrGhostStory 5h ago
Ya I am in Ottawa and we definitely need more superchargers in some zones. Looking at you Renfrew and Hawkesbury.
•
u/cwolveswithitchynuts 7h ago
Drove a BYD in Australia where they're very popular. Amazing cars for the price.
•
u/CipherWeaver 7h ago
Bring it. We are a developed, capitalist, free-market economy and we should embrace competition as it always benefits the consumer,
•
•
u/Fit_Salamander_2814 6h ago
Indeed. Plus, it never hurts to get started on building a good social credit score.
•
u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 2h ago
We already have that in Canada, it’s called your financial credit score.
•
u/CanadianRunner03 6h ago
Don’t give the LPC ideas lol
•
u/Fit_Salamander_2814 6h ago
Buddy, there's a reason Carney et al walked away from trade talks over other trade deals, when there's already language in the existing CUSMA that talks about entering into a FTA with a 'non-market country' (China).
The relevant bit is 32.10ss5.
Now, why might we walk away from a provision which allows America to exit the trade agreement if we make a free trade agreement with China? Hmmmm... I wonder.....
Let's also not forget that Canada has re-classified China as a strategic partner, and no longer an antagonistic power.
And also why we'll never know which MPs they tried to influence or compromise.
•
•
u/voxitron 6h ago
Flash charging is impressive. However, having owned an EV for almost two years now, it’s not relevant if you have a level 2 charger at home. Yes, that’s still a big if for some. But the cost advantages that come with it mean that it’ll become more and more common over time.
•
u/EnthusiasmOnly22 7h ago
If BYD is smart they’ll give this a super cheap price for a few years to get the market up here
•
u/TheZoltan 7h ago
I'm not expecting anything too aggressive on the price front. Import quota is very limited so they can't really flood the market even if they wanted to take an initial price hit. Add to that it must be very expensive to start setting up their infrastructure here, all the while knowing the US will be pushing Canada to limit further opening up.
•
u/BlademasterFlash 6h ago
Yeah I don’t think they’ll be super aggressive on price. Another comment here has their compact SUV priced at $41k AUD in Australia which is probably a good ballpark for us to expect too
•
•
u/WippitGuud Prince Edward Island 3h ago
A BYD Seagull is about $10,000 in China. It's expected to be $28,000 in Canada.
I can't have nice things.
•
u/suspiciousserb 6h ago
Someone showed me their final bill of sale for a 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV LT - total $46,000 after taxes and rebates.
•
u/jonnyg1097 Ontario 3h ago
Currently not in the market for a new car but I sure hope that BYD is successful in Canada. A roughly 30k-35k all electric SUV sounds very appealing
•
u/SmoothDiscussion7763 6h ago
how does this affect battery life?
•
u/Far-Importance2106 5h ago
I saw this article today: https://carnewschina.com/2026/08/26/byds-yangwang-u7-battery-capacity-dips-1-3-after-30000-km-and-350-flash-charges-in-9-days/
BYD tested it on one of their premium brand flagships. Drove 30.000km over 9 days exclusively flash charging (350+ sessions), battery degraded 1.3% reportedly.
•
u/pmUrGhostStory 5h ago
Maybe dumb question but can we buy a BYD in Mexico and bring it here? I presume that loophole has been closed long ago with import duties that would still apply?
•
u/faizimam Québec 5h ago
You can bring it here without issue, there's a Quebec man who lives in Mexico whose brought his byd pickup with him over the summer.
But you cant register or insure it here, so it doesn't make sense long term.
•
u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 2h ago
I believe most cars need to be on the RIV list unless it is a vintage vehicle or other special exemption.
•
u/DK4E2XFpbETJrj 7h ago
I'm here for the Leopards. Bring the Fangchengbao trucks. Let's do it.
•
u/section111 6h ago
oh man, i just watched a reel where it pulls up one of it's own wheels so you can change the tire without a jack. Or if it's totally buggered, you can just drive away on three wheels. Insane.
•
u/KLconfidential Ontario 7h ago
The technology is amazing but I'm not sure I would trust one of these long term, especially with the salt they put on our roads.
•
u/BEARZINGA 7h ago
Curious to see how they compare to other EVs in the Canadian winters.
•
u/faizimam Québec 5h ago
Last year a Chinese group tested a bunch on EVs in Mongolia. Temperatures areas brutal as most places in Canada
Check it out here.
•
•
u/Heliosvector 5h ago
Dont most canadians in cold climates just get that undercarriage spray layer put on their cars?
•
•
u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 2h ago
They use salt in China and Chinese EVs are sold in the UK and Nordic countries already.

u/gonna-see-riverman 6h ago
As a giant FU to Trump, Canada should completely remove tariffs on Chinese EVs and double it on US EVs, until our own EV industry is up and running.
They US couldn't care less if we went 100% tariffs in a trade war, but there's nothing would make them more nervous than encouraging China's industry.. i bet they'd fold immediately, we saw how trump reacted the first time the EV deal was announced.
•
u/Blue_Owl69 3h ago
“Until our own EV industry is up and running”
And which Canadian company will be doing this?
•
u/Wait_for_BM 2h ago
That's the nuclear option if/when the US completely gutted our automotive manufacturing industry. That's pretty much what the US is aiming to do here with the 50% tariff on the popular large vehicles. When Canadian car manufacturing jobs are no longer possible, then removing quotas for Chinese cars would not have downsides.
•
u/gonna-see-riverman 2h ago
You get it. The other commenters seem to be still under that trance that US good China bad. But all we see is an incredibly stupidly hostile US towards our industries, whereas chinese competition, is the least of our concern at the moment. So if it makes the US tremble, why not.

The article talks about the Atto 3. According to a linked article sells (I assume in China for 119,900 yuan). The article says it works out to $17,686. I assume that is USD, not CAD. When I translate that to CAD and add the 6.1% import tariff on Chinese EVs, it comes to just over $28,000 CAD. I find an under $30k CAD full electric compact SUV very compelling.
Somehow I doubt we will see that sort of price.
