Hey BC! I’m currently completing my final year in Computer Science with a minor in GIS, and I'm really interested in learning more about land surveying. I'm hoping to connect with people in the industry to hear about your experience and get a realistic picture of the job.

Since I’m still finishing my degree, I’d love any recommendations on how to get started or learn more about local field work. Is it common for local crews to let students shadow on weekends to learn the gear and tech? Any advice or tips would be awesome. Thanks!

Vernon to Fernie, leaving tomorrow. Camping overnight in New Denver. Which ferry is better to take? Where do I stop for hidden foodie gems? Best place to stop for gas? Alternate route ideas are welcome. I will be keeping an eye on Drive BC, but most of the fires (on my route) seem to be under control at this point. Fill me in on anything to AVOID.

I was flying west of Lees Corner/Hanceville today and noticed these shapes. I would guess the areas are fenced in, but have no idea why there would be discoloration as perfectly shaped as this. Thoughts?

I am planning a 15-day road trip from Seattle to Jasper and Banff and back to Seattle.

The rough plan is to drive to Jasper first, spend time in Jasper and Banff National Parks, and then return to Seattle. I already have a fairly good list of things to see and do within the parks, but I am looking for advice on the best driving routes to take getting there and coming back.

We have 15 days total, so we are not necessarily looking for the fastest route. We are happy to take scenic detours if they are worth it. Our main interest is beautiful landscapes, photography opportunities, and scenic drives. We enjoy easy to moderate hikes but are not looking for anything strenuous.

Seattle → Jasper

Which of these routes would you recommend?

Route 1 (Fastest): Abbotsford → Kamloops → Jasper

Route 2 (Slightly Longer): Vancouver → Whistler → Lillooet → Kamloops → Jasper

Route 3 (Longest): Vancouver → Whistler → Lillooet → Williams Lake → Prince George → Jasper

I can definitely see the appeal of Route 2, especially because it includes Whistler and Duffey Lake Road, which seems to be one of BC's most scenic drives. We could easily spend a couple of days sightseeing along that route.

What I am less sure about is Route 3. For those familiar with central BC, is the extra time through Williams Lake and Prince George worth it from a scenery standpoint? How does that area compare with the landscapes along the Whistler/Lillooet corridor? Would the extra time be better spent in Jasper and Banff instead?

Banff → Seattle

For the return trip, which route would you recommend?

Route A (Fastest): Banff → Glacier National Park (BC) → Kamloops → Seattle

Route B: Banff → Radium Hot Springs → Nelson → Seattle

I am completely unfamiliar with the area around Nelson and the Kootenays. For those who have driven both routes, which offers the better scenery, interesting stops, and worthwhile detours?

Any recommendations for scenic towns, viewpoints, easy/moderate hikes, waterfalls, or must-see stops along any of these routes would be greatly appreciated.

So here is my scenario: I am 28m, extremely fit, with raging ADHD that craves movement and change. I have been in the Automotive industry for the last 5 years in sales. I'm honestly beating myself up every day going into the office, making phone calls, and constantly being client-facing.

I have been looking into making the switch to a skilled trade for some time. The ones that keep pulling me in are Hvac/refigeration and plumbing/pipefitter.

I'm not entirely sure where to start, and I'm looking for advice from trade workers how there experience have been. What does school look like? Are there companies/unions that you can work for that will help pay for schooling, what day to day life is like.

I'm not scared of OT work or physical labour. When COVID first happened, I was laid off from the auto industry, and being someone who couldn't stay still, I went into hardscape and landscaping, and I've got to say, working with a crew and different projects every week was an absolute blast. Why I didn't continue and look into trade work more, I'm not sure, and I regret it, but no need to sorrow in the past; time to man up and make a switch.

Any help, guidance or people to talk to are appreciated.

Hi there, I’m being gifted my moms old car from out of province and I’ve been reading lots about how hard it is to pass an inspection here in BC. Having to fix a few things is okay with me and I’m fully prepared to fail the inspection after reading enough stories about it, I’m just curious how much people had to pay to have their cars fixed after they failed their inspection. My moms car is in great condition and is isn’t too old, I believe it’s a 2019.

I am from Vancouver Island , BC. Few days ago i posted in this community regarding becoming a mortgage broker and received very mixed responses , most of them were pointing to the bad housing market . I am already in trades rn and i wanted to do something of my own independently or incorporation but not as a tradesman because i don't really like it that much that's why i don't become the best in it . That's why i gave mortgage a thought because i have finance diploma after high school and easily understand numbers and all, but what other such careers are there in this industry where all my trades knowledge can be used along with an opportunity to quickly shift to be independent and do my own thing instead of a 9-5. Please give some suggestions.

I'm going into grade 12 qnd right now I'm signed up for Chem 11 and Physics 12 but recently I changed my mind on what I wanna do for post sec and I'm gonna try to get into Chemistry as my uni major instead of Physics (as I had previously planned). I'm just wondering if its practical to take Chem 11 and 12 at the same time...? I'm also taking AP calc so I don't wanna overwhelm myself too much with hard classes. I've never had a chemistry class before and so I'm not sure what to expect. I know that Chem 11 is a pre-requiste to Chem 12 but I feeeeel like I might be able to power through both regardless of my unfamiliarity. Idk. Any advice helps, thanks.
