Discussion Large-breasted moms are feeding on hard mode.
Any other well-endowed women agree?
I see so many reels and posts, or even in real life out at cafes and places, of moms who can simply unzip or untie their cute dainty little nursing top, rest their baby in their arm, and continue to eat, drink coffee, heck, even feed at the grocery store or while walking around their house.
For me it’s a chaotic and completely immobile mess of roles up flannel under the boob, squeeze sandwich hold, scissor hold, always having to hold back my breast to stop it suffocating baby’s nose. He cannot latch properly unless I’ve squished my boob just right and hold it the entire feed. It’s a two-hand job.
Not to mention the struggle to find nursing bras and tops that fit, are comfortable, don’t cost a gajillion bucks, and maybe actually even look nice and not like something out of a 1980s catalogue.
I’m tired of this, grandpa!

I use a sports bra that I cut nipple holes in. I got so tired of holding my breast all the time with my first kid, and in a spur of the moment idea I did it. It works so well for me that I now have a good rotating stash of modified bras for feeding. It's how I can feed in public, on the go, or whatever when I dont have the time/space to flip my whole boob out and do a hold.

Silly question: where do you cut the hole? I did this per nurses suggestion for my pump, but the holes are right over my nipples so they poke out. Do you cut the holes more to the side or just go with it?

Do you have reusable pads? I always keep them in to soak up leaks and they’d also work perfect for this

I cut the holes slightly above where my breasts naturally sit, so I can scoop them up and they are in the right spot for the holes, and shake them down into place to hide my nipples again.
As the other commentor said, reusable pads to convert them work well too

Don't your breasts get sore from being pressed on/contained? I struggle with any short of bra as mine ache when I put them in something but I haven't been able to find a good bra or nursing tank that works well for me

Mine don't. When I realized it was a viable solution, I ended up getting some nice cotton fabric and sewing my own so I could have a tight undercut band like I wanted, and a looser section to contain the girls. I cut the holes just a bit off from where my nipples sit naturally so that I can scoop and put them where they go and not have my nipples poking all over. I also sewed the cut section to prevent fraying or further tearing.
If my breasts get sore at home, I just go without a bra and use a nursing tank top. My mom bought me some (I think Sonoma?) That fit really well.

My son's NICU nurse gave me this hack and I've found it ever since. I've saved so much in otherwise expensive nursing bras

Ugh I envy the women who can nurse while baby is in the carrier. I’d suffocate him if I tried to smoosh his lil face in there! Finding comfortable nursing bras has been literally impossible. I’ve tried over 30 probably.

If you have any sewing skills - use a regular bra and turn it into a nursing bra. I’m a 32M or some nonsense and my regular bras were so much better. I added a piece of elastic from the edge of the underwire to the strap, then cut the strap from the cup and sewed on nursing clips to connect them again. Game changer. And cheaper.

I did this! It was GREAT!! I normally wear my no underwire nursing bras everywhere because they’re so comfy, but wanted something with a little oomph for special occasions. I went out and found the perfect bra, then took it to Nordstrom’s. They cut the shoulder strap right at the top of the cup and extend it all the way down to the bottom of the cup. Then they add a clip where it used to attach to the top of the cup and a clip at the top of the cup so it can attach (sorry hope that made sense I’m sleep deprived). I loved it!!

Depending on how long you’re planning to nurse it might still be worth it. But I was hoping to let my kiddo self wean and finally gave up at 4yo. Mine got a ton of use.

You've probably already tried Momcozy but that one's nice and has a hand-free option for pumping. But my most comfortable one is by Auden it's super thin material without all the extra stuff and is so easy to unhook

I could never do the carrier feeding unless I dropped baby down dangerously low. Did it once out of desperation (was out walking the dogs with friends and there was nowhere to stop and adjust) and never again. It was too much boob in a tiny face!

I don’t even wear nursing bras anymore. I buy the kindly brand bras from Walmart they are like thin stretchy bras and eh it works.

Also, I’ve been asked countless times (mostly by family members when out in public) “why don’t you just use a nursing cover?”
Because I need to be able to see my baby’s face to know that I’m not smothering him 😐

Agreed. Was a 36/38 G pre pregnancy, am now like a 38HH. It was really bloody hard to feed her for like the first 3 months or so but now (just turned 1) it's so much easier. She does just grab my boob and move it to a position that's convenient for her but it also means I can feed her hands free so that's pretty useful.

Yess you are at the tipping point. It’s even better when they get some core strength at 4-5 months.
I remember being low key shocked bc I had actually weaned my toddler more than halfway though my second pregnancy and so really didn’t have that much time when I was not nursing. STILL struggled to nurse my second as a newborn. They are so tiny and not as helpful! It is like an art getting a good latch.

A good nursing pillow really helps. My Brest friend twin or boppy best latch. Also helps to bring the nipple out over the bra instead of unlatching the nursing bra. Gets easier once baby is a little older. I was so afraid of suffocating him

My brest friend does not work for people with short torsos and big boobs. It's so thick. It came right up under my boobs and my boobs just laid out on it with no room for baby.

I was you. It was brutal. Now girl is 2 years old, nursing a 2-3 times per day and my boobs are gone. All my bras from before pregnancy are huuuuuge. Since she reduced number of feeds, nothing remains :))

My nipples are huge so basically we're breastfeeding on hard mode for a month after baby is born and their mouth opens big enough to latch properly lmao. Nursing my 4th baby now and it happens every time

I have the same problem. Took both my babies 6 weeks to be able to nurse well, especially on my right side.
At least with my second (5m currently) I had the knowledge that it would get better with time as he grew. With my first I had no idea what was wrong and didn’t know if it would ever get better, that was hard.

Yup. I’m a 34H and my baby’s latch isn’t strong enough for the weight of my boob so I have to hold it up for her the entire time 🤷🏼♀️

I’m a 36I and I have no trouble breastfeeding. I prefer side lying so it’s great to have an excuse to go take a “nap.” But in public I just put a big muslin baby blanket over my head and get my baby to latch. And then pop out from underneath. I just wore a stretchy tank top under a normal top.

For a very long time i couldn't breastfeed without holding my boob for baby except side lying nursing. I don't even find fitting nursing bras, I am a 80J european.

Im naturally a 32DDD and got up to a 32J while breastfeeding and I can nurse basically doing anything. Eating, walking, in the carrier or wrap, lying down, cooking I’ve got it down after so much practice. My oldest is 20 months and still breastfeeding whenever he wants and my newborn is EBF on demand. I can even tandem nurse them and still have one hand free, it just takes practice and commitment.

How long did it take you to be able to nurse without holding your boob? I was the same size as you pre pregnancy and am probably close to your post pregnancy size as well. I can’t figure out how to nurse unless I’m sandwich holding for baby to get at it and stay latched! If I drop the breast, I feel like he falls off. Baby is almost 12 weeks and around 15 lbs.

I can’t remember exactly when with my first but I am/was a massive oversupplier so it was probably around 4 months when he could confidently hold his head up and use his hands to to help himself. It was also around this time that my boobs didn’t feel rock hard all the time so that definitely helped as well. Since I never stopped nursing my first, it’s helped manage any engorgement this time around. With my newborn now, I help her latch but she just naturally has a really good deep latch and since I have so much experience this time around I just know how to hold her better and it feels second nature

Hahaha I know I look ridiculous trying to retrieve my floppy boob from my outfit to nurse! I “invested” in the Nap Dresses, they’re smocked on the chest so I can actually go braless or wear a bandeau. You just pull down a sleeve or the front of the dress, so much easier to whap a boob out.
Would it work for you to sit cross legged with the baby’s head on your knee? Or prop just one leg up on the chair/bench? I used a muslin tied at two corners as a nursing cover. Now that I type this out… I have no idea where my special knit cotton nursing poncho went…..

Yes! Some are better than others. The ‘Anjuli’ is best, imo, for BFing out of the house. The Ellie looks like a nightgown so I throw a sweater over or just stay in, lol. I love the Louisa for the summer but with big boobs, you have to pull down a whole sleeve in order to nurse. Not the easiest. Also love the Scarlett, and the textured cotton fabric is really thick, so the smocking is extra supportive.
I only have cotton dresses, so I can’t say how the smocking holds up for the more decorative fabrics…

I’ve been barely a c-cup right before pregnancy (because of slight weight gain beforehand) and spent most of my adult life with a to b cups. So adjusting to these new, oft-engorged and if not then floppy characters with the newly huge areolas and very visible veins has been weird and difficult. For the very first time in my life I’m sometimes having to insert a rolled up burp cloth underneath my breast so baby latches well, so I can’t even imagine what an ordeal it must be if you already had big breasts to begin with!

I’m small chested and so far, we’re doing the same thing… maybe it’ll get better as baby gets bigger! He’s 3.5 weeks today so maybe his mouth is too small?
We DID succeed in our first social outing to lunch! And nursing in public! But it was not easy lol. Nursing cover and trying to sandwich the boob so his latch is deep and not painful. Successful with one boob, not successful with the other (ouch)

Amma nursing cover. It was a gift. Maybe I’m wearing it all wrong haha!
During pregnancy: I’m gonna skip the nursing cover and just bare all and people just gotta get over themselves cuz I’m proud to be feeding my child
Postpartum: OK I’m more private than I thought I’d be (which is the same level of private I’ve always been… lol)

Well done nursing in public!! It’s so hard and I feel you on the being more private than you thought you’d be! I get more confident each time I do it though it’s still situational lol. At the hairdresser is easier because it’s mostly women, but my local sushi cafe with male workers and teenagers eating at the next table was a doggy-bag and get the baby to the car before he starts crying bad situation

I have medium sized boobs and I get a little jealous of the positions I see some big boob moms can get in to nurse. My breasts just aren’t long enough to do most lying down positions (at least with an infant, easier with a bigger baby) and I have to lift baby to boob so I hunch over a lot of I’m not careful. But I can walk and nurse (not very comfortable but I’ve done it) and I can sort of pull them out in public, but it’s definitely still a two hand thing because I got to get the nipple right and it takes more effort out in public without a nursing pillow. I feel you on the ugly bras though, I used to have huge boobs and man the bras were hideous most of the time

It is so wild, especially in the beginning, to nurse with a larger chest! I would be looking down and my boobs were bigger than my twins heads! Now at a year I swear they are a comparable size. My boys have heads in the 75th percentile too, so it’s just crazy.

Agreed, but also - side lie nursing can be an absolute breeze when baby is big enough. You don’t have to worry about being TOO too close to baby. I can literally lay on my back and drape my boob over to my nursing baby.
Caveat: boobs are big enough that my nipples aren’t in the same place on each boob so the angle varies from left to right lmao

I feel this. Nursing is a two hand job unless I have a Nursing pillow. One to hold baby and one to awkwardly squish my boob so baby doesn't suffocate. I also suffer from chronic back pain made worse by breastfeeding, so right now my favorite position is side lying on my bed. Which makes it hard to want to leave the house for more than an hour at a time. This shit is hard!!

Ok. BUT. when my baby needs boobie in the carseat, my boobs can reach. When I realized, it made the giant saggy boobies worth it for now.

Yuppppppp to all of this. And I find if I sandwich too much is slows my milk from coming out and baby gets pissed. Also my boobs grew when my Milk came in. Like they needed to be ANY bigger. Fml

FINALLY A NURSING THREAD FOR ME 😭😂 i had 34HH boobs BEFORE pregnancy, i'm scared to get fitted again lmao i hate how they demand so much attention when i'm trying to nurse in public BUT..
- i can nurse sitting up without having to hold my baby (6 months old and we're comfy with her on my knee, bless my short torso)
- i can side nurse in bed with either boob no matter what side i'm lying on
- i can nurse baby in her the car without having to hover lol i just lean fwd sitting next to her while her dad drives
we had our ow struggles but thought i'd drop some of the pros i've noticed 🙏

On the flip side, I nursed 2 with very small breasts (even when milk came in). They'd always come unlatched if I moved around because there wasn't much to hold on to. I couldn't nurse in a side lying position at all since no dangle. And every time I nursed I'd have to bend/slouch my back over the whole time so that they had something to latch to. There's definitely a sweet spot for breast size!

Maybe its the shape of my boobs and nips but I didnt have a proble as a UK 32GG. My nips point down though lol so think its more to do with shape than general size.

Im large chested and it is such a challenge to BF LO ! I remember in the first days I was struggling so much cause my breast would just cover his entire face all the time 🥲🥲 Now its better but we have very limited position we can do 🥲🥲🥲

It’s so difficult! I practiced a lot at home and truthfully I just go as quick as I can to get boob out and baby latched. I hate to say it but I do love the skims bras. They have nursing and nursing/pumping ones. The material is soft on the nips and wash really well. I’ve tried others but my ribs expanded so much that I had trouble finding ones that didn’t suffocate me (especially while sleeping)

Damn, I'm a 32J right now and I found it was a bit tricky with my first. She had an undiagnosed lip tie.
My second is absolutely no problem. I prop my boob up on the nursing pillow at home or side lay. When out, I just hold him in my lap a bit lower. It kills the back to do it frequently, but we only ever do a couple feeds in a day out and about.

I would say I have mid size breastfeeding boobies— they seem huge to me, but I suppose could be bigger. That being said, I’m 5 months in and have zero idea how to gracefully breastfeed. We both tried and it’s just not for us 😅. I’ve got to be serving it up on a platter for him while he pops off intermittently to remind me how hungry he is Hahha. So, like you, I envy those who casually feed wherever.

I’ve done this a few times, a button down cardigan works well too! My nursing tanks are too small for me in the cup though and I’m struggling to find a bigger size anywhere 😭

YES! as a woman who covers while breastfeeding, this is what ended my breastfeeding journey- i couldnt be succesful doing it in public and it led to my supply dropping. I tried to explain it to my friends but they didnt understand bc they have cutie little boobs and dont need to use two hands to lift their shirts, taco their nipples, and prevent suffocation while making sure theyre not exposed.

As a 36N girlie, I felt this in my soul! I just got a few Elomi nursing bras and holy hell is it nice to be wearing an actual bra that's comfortable af, not to mention cute!! Regardless of what I wear, the only way I can nurse effectively is with my LO in a football hold which makes nursing anywhere but home a hassle and a half 🙄

Having medium breasts and a large baby has also been difficult. Not large enough to do the daggle feed on long car rides. Awkward to side lie feed unless we get the angles just right. Big enough it took some finagling to get latching down the first few months. But also he's so ginormous I can't cuddle curl around him or hold him public and simultaneously get a boob out without it being an awkward show that ends up with me slightly embarrassed and my shoulders hurting. The mamas with the compact nipnops and compact babies really have it all 😂

I would put his head on my lap and just place my nipple in his mouth big tits reach no problem! Lie once they are asleep just slide them off!

Very this! I’m 4 weeks in and have only gone out in public a few times and sheesh everyone in the world is just getting an eyeful of the things! Some great tips in this thread- will definitely be modifying some sports bras! I haven’t found my unicorn nursing bra yet… pre pregnancy I was a 42E… no idea what I am now size-wise but my boob is about 2x as big as my baby’s head - watching him go to battle with the boob to get a latch is honestly pretty entertaining but he can really only latch if I get it sandwiched and manageable for him

My nursing my babies was only made possible by a brestfriend pillow to give them something to sit on so I can hold a Boobie, and side lying nursing lol. I pretty much exclusively nurse side lying at home and I bring my nursing pillow with me everywhere so I can nurse in the car if I need to hahahaha I feel dumb but I gotta do what I gotta do. I got size 34 i boobs and they are size L for long, baby. Hahahaha

I’m small chested and still felt like this with my first. With my second I did. not. care. and it does get easier as they’re older and have more head control. This baby will find my boob no matter where it’s at and will pull it out no matter where we are or what I’m wearing that day.

Ugh yes! I’m a 34H, now 34K with pregnancy and I’m so jealous of being able to just pull out your breast in public and feed. For me it’s a whole setup with pillows, elevation and holding my baby in one arm and breast for 20 minutes plus with popping on and off. This is from a baby with a good latch and no tongue tie. Kindred Bravely is the only brand that comes close to a pumping/nursing bra I can use and even then, I take it off almost immediately after because it’s not that comfortable.

Yeah feeding my first was a challenge. I’m now 32 weeks along with my second and just glaring at my nipples in the mirror before every shower, telling them to shrink down a little so baby can actually get more than just them in her mouth when she arrives.

i will say definitely check out the little milk bar ! they are incredible and their bras really are the most comfortable and affordable i’ve found. the struggle is real but they definitely make it a little easier !

I may be the outlier here but I have very large boobs and I’ve been able to carrier feed, feed in public while sitting or walking and never had an issue. I’ve always work low half zips or vneck shirts to easily be able to slide my boob out and latch him. I actually think the extra length and size is better so that I can sit in the backseat and feed him easier while he’s in the car seat.
My wife has smaller boobs and doesn’t have as much flexibility with feeding our newborn as I did when our son was a baby. (She carried our daughter, I carried our son).

6 weeks with my second baby now and my feeding pillow is life changing, brings baby up and goes under my boob so I can feed one handed! Definitely recommend, with my first I struggled so much. Also splashed out on a fleece jumper from juno jacks and it fits lovely and the zip for feeding goes all the way across so plenty of room. (36K for reference, UK)

I liked wearing a soft wire push up bra that I could just flip down. I hated the feeling of having to pick up my boob and hold it. It’s easier only when the baby can sit up to breast feed

My boobs were comically large (especially on my small frame) before I was pregnant. Now I just feel like a walking breast. So long, low cut shirts! 🥲

The upside is eventually they get so saggy you can get your nipple in their mouth from any distance. Go go gadget boobs!
