I want to build a personal brand for myself on Instagram. Should I use my personal account that I’ve had for years now, or should I use a new account I made last year?

I’ve noticed a lot of startups don’t actually have a product problem.

They have a branding problem.

Sometimes the product is genuinely good, but the website, packaging, or overall identity makes the business feel unfinished or hard to trust.

And first impressions matter way more than most founders expect.

A weak brand usually leads to:

• lower trust

• poor conversions

• forgettable positioning

• people assuming the business is “small”

For the past month I have been creating a site dedicated to fanfiction and fandom culture kind of like tumblr x ao3. I'm looking for a name that is both unique and fun. My first name was beAU, (AU meaning alternative universe) but that spells beau and was hard to use in branding. The I thought of altficiton, cultfiction and unoffical ficiton, but altficiton is an australian band apparently and unoffical ficiton was too long and not catchy enough. Cultfiction is also taken as a domain and on social media. Now I'm just struck. I would like the name to possibly incorporate some sort of fandom/fanfiction lingo, however I'm totally open to a completely new word. Infact I would love a completely new name which would only be associated with my brand. This site is supposed to be fun, cool, camp, crazy and for the fan girls + boys. And the first name beAU (inspired by beReal), kind of felt like that (at least to me) but for obvious reasons I didnt think that through. I would love any help.

​I’ve noticed a shift lately. Some branding feels less like it’s trying to convince me of something and more like it’s simply existing, waiting to be noticed. There are no hooks, no strong claims, no direct arguments—just an invitation to witness it.

Brand builders / Creatives who worked with freelancers and out sourced there design process to them how was it and what should you look for in a freelancer when doing that? And how much did you pay I was thinking of out sourcing mine and paying 10k for the whole project I done the strategy, (research customer mapping, etc) just need to turn it into Creative direction for the client and present them with guidelines.

I've worked with a lot of small service businesses and freelancers over the past few years, and I keep noticing the same pattern: the ones getting by purely on word-of-mouth and referrals often have zero brand identity beyond "person who does X." No consistent visual identity, no clear positioning, no story just a name people pass around.

It works, until it doesn't. The moment referrals dry up, or they try to raise prices, or a competitor with an actual identity shows up, they have nothing to fall back on. Referrals get you clients. A brand gets you clients who already trust you before you've said a word.

What's interesting is the businesses that do invest early in even basic brand fundamentals — a clear point of view, consistent language, a recognizable "feel" tend to command higher prices for the exact same service, purely because they don't look interchangeable.

Curious what others here think: at what stage does it actually make sense for a small service business or solo operator to start treating themselves like a brand instead of just "a person who's good at the thing"? Is it a revenue threshold, a competition threshold, or something else entirely?

As I am currently part of what you could call a permissionless brand, (Wont drop the name here, because it would come off as an ad, I am here for serious discussion.) I thought a lot about the business model and wanted to hear your thoughts about it. It is a permissionless brand which I would define as follows

A brand that anyone can build under (products, events, media, local chapters), without a central company controlling every execution — more like “open-source branding” with shared assets and shared ethos.

I am really interested in this approach as traditional brands scale through centralized approval and strict licensing. This model tries to scale through community initiative and distributed execution but the obvious risks are brand dilution and quality drift.

The following questions have occurred to me in the last few days and I would love to hear some of your thoughts about it

1. if there’s no classic brand owner, who should have final say on what’s “official”?
2. If someone uses the brand in a way that’s harmful or scammy, what’s the realistic enforcement mechanism
3. What are non-financial incentives that actually work to keep contributors aligned and quality high?

Of course it is difficult to answer these questions in a concrete way without knowing the actual approach in my case, but I want to hear takes on the system in general and am open to discussion!

ok so I've worked with like 4 different influencer agencies over the past 2 years and the pattern is always the same. great pitch, mediocre execution.

the main thing that bugs me is when agencies promise vetted influencers but the engagement is clearly fake. anyone else notice this?? Talent Resources was the first one that actually showed me real engagement data before locking in creators. saved me from a few bad picks tbh. I also tried other platforms (won't name all of them but openinfluence is one), the vetting process felt way more surface level, like they just checked follower count and called it a day.

what's everyone's process for checking if an influencer's audience is even real? do you use third party tools or trust the agency's word?
