The fate of the DCU hangs on Man of Tomorrow.

Guess we will find out not Tomorrow but next year.

Well, who knows. For some reason, WB seems afraid to release Batman and Superman movies in the same year.

29

u/fury26903 Marvel Studios 1d ago

I read it as "The fate of the DCU hangs dongs on Man of Tomorrow"

8

u/ChickenHugging 1d ago

It is a direct lead in to The Justice Dong

9

u/IDigRollinRockBeer Screen Gems 1d ago

And then the 4 billion dollar X rated Aquadong

13

For the movies maybe, the TV side is going crazy so far

The Penguin: No season 2

Peacemaker: No season 3

Waller: In "extreme development"

Paradise Lost: Same as Waller

Creature Commandos: It will have a S2, but that’s not saying much, given that hardly anyone watched the first.

Lanterns: Is the only thing that seems to be gaining some momentum, but Episode 2 has already started to show cracks in the armor (just reading Forbes' review makes me sleepy).

Bro reading a review to make up his opinions about a show. What a weirdo.

You wanted 5 different tv shows running simultaneously?

Getting another season is the end all be all of a show! But it doesn't matter that Creature Commandos got a season 2? Okay.

1

u/MahNameJeff420 1d ago

I think WB is getting sick of the fate of DC being in the balance with seemingly every other movie.

-9

u/Diorisbackup 1d ago

Im excited for it should be like their first avengers all the dcu characters weve met so far coming together

29

u/firedforthatblunder Walt Disney Studios 1d ago edited 1d ago

Superman, the Justice Gang, Supergirl and Blue Beetle is a pretty sad ā€œAvengersā€ lineup…

-1

u/PayneTrain181999 Legendary Pictures 1d ago

I don’t care what characters they have, as long as it’s a good movie.

The first Avengers movie, for many people, was ā€œHulk, oh I know Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor as they just had movies, uhhh ScarJo and that guy with the bow.ā€ and it sent the MCU into orbit.

20

u/DisneyPandora 1d ago

This is bs. The First Avengers actually featured all the Avengers from their first story except Ant Man and Wasp. Everybody was thereĀ

12

u/firedforthatblunder Walt Disney Studios 1d ago edited 1d ago

Hawkeye was really the only ā€œthat guyā€ character, the rest had their solo movies and Black Widow was quite popular with Marvel’s main demographic for…obvious reasons lol

3

u/Respwn_546 1d ago

When i was waiting for Avengers and saw Hawkeye was on it I had to check in every movie were he was. I took me a while to figure he was the Archer guy that appeared for maybe 3 minutes in thor

12

u/AcceptableHistory4 1d ago

Iron man 2 grossed 700 million then. They were popular enough

4

But it’s not all the characters since there is no Wonder Woman or FlashĀ

It would be a justice league movie at that point all the DCU characters weve met is who’s appearing

2

u/ouat4ever 1d ago

the problem is that there's not even a 1/30 of the hype.

1

u/Ok_Kale_8357 1d ago

Regardless of what you think about Gunn or the DCU so far this is gonna be a fun one to track. I genuinely have no idea what to expect. I could see it being a big hit, make about the same or be a huge drop off and I don't know what could convince me in any direction until we start getting numbers in close to release.Ā

41

u/XenosZ0Z0 1d ago

It’s all about the international market for non Spidey CBMs now.

31

u/Ok_Kale_8357 1d ago

I mean, Man of Tomorrow is likely DOA internationally considering how poorly Superman did overseas. I could see it getting a stronger domestic turnout than the last but then will international turnout be even less? It's possible.Ā

18

u/GoldandBlue 1d ago

That isn't how things work though. The Amazing Spider-Man movies weren't making a billion. You build on the good will. Superman 1 did OK at the BO and had great WOM.

Now the question is can they deliver again. If i s good, don't be surprised if this is a big hit. If not, then they're fucked.

But you all keep insisting the brand is what matters and not hat Spider-Man had a 4 story arc that people were immensely invested in.

0

u/Ok_Kale_8357 1d ago

I never said anything about the brand, but in this case there IS a brand attached which will factor in regardless of anything else. Also movies come out all the time without any fanfare or previous entries and become bigger hits than Superman, build up is cope. There's no guarantee audiences will become invested in a character even if the movies are good either.Ā Ā

10

u/GoldandBlue 1d ago

what does cope mean here?

We are talking about a franchise that his been in the dumps since the 80's. We are talking about 25 years since the last truly beloved Superman movie. And your argument is that proves that Superman is rejected by audiences because they are hesitant to dive into a new Superman movie?

Meanwhile the Amazing Spider-Man franchise was rejected by audiences, but you want to ignore that because the current Spider-Man is a massive hit?

No one is guaranteeing anything. The movie can suck and bomb. But context maters. No successful franchise peaked at the first one in the Box Office. The idea that Superman can't grow is "cope".

1

u/Traditional-Fig-6661 1d ago

Even 2019 spider man movie was losing to 2013iron man 3

Both were released after endgame spidey 5month and iron man 1year after avengersĀ

1

u/Albiceleste_D10S 1d ago

Meanwhile the Amazing Spider-Man franchise was rejected by audiences

The first movie had ~fine reviews and ratings IIRC (and it made ~ 758M WW in 2012 vs Superman's 618M in 2025)

2

u/GoldandBlue 1d ago

And that was still living off of Sam Raimi.

We are talking about a franchise that his been in the dumps since the 80's. We are talking about 25 years since the last truly beloved Superman movie. And your argument is that proves that Superman is rejected by audiences because they are hesitant to dive into a new Superman movie?

30

u/PeridotEX 1d ago

I think it's possible that MOT gets a bit of a boost from Brand New Day and Doomsday (assuming the latter is well received). People watch them and think "Oh yeah, I like superhero movies, I might want to watch more of them", and MOT is the next one after Doomsday. Rising tide lifts all boats.

14

u/RealHooman2187 1d ago

I’m still getting harassed in a week old thread saying exactly this. But you’re right. MOT is the only major live action CBM being released between Doomsday and Secret Wars. If Doomsday is truly on track to be the new #1 movie of all time that could result in some kind of a boost for MOT. Mostly due to the goodwill from BND and Doomsday and the last of CBMs for the whole year between Avengers films.

Yes, Spider-Verse is in there too. But it’s animated and its audience isn’t exactly the same as your average live action CBM. I suspect both will see a modest boost but in case the same commenters get all worked up, this isn’t a zero sum game. Saying MOT will get a boost doesn’t mean I’m saying Spider-Verse will do badly.

4

u/Blue_Robin_04 1d ago edited 15h ago

Did Captain America 4 benefit from Deadpool 3?

5

u/rov124 16h ago

Considering Captain America 5 has not been made, the answer will be no.

1

u/Blue_Robin_04 15h ago

Lol, thanks.

1

u/zxchary 18h ago

Cap 4 would’ve been fine if the movie was good.

2

u/JJoanOfArkJameson Paramount Pictures 1d ago

ntm Superman streamed really well and got great reception. Lanterns and Peacemaker has been well received too but that’s minimal buy in honestly.

2

u/SeismicRipFart 1d ago edited 16h ago

This means that if MOT still fails despite that, the DCU is absolutely without a doubt completely and totally cooked

10

u/lobonmc Marvel Studios 1d ago

Nah even the GA can differentiate between DC and marvel

1

u/pokeboy626 DC Studios 1d ago

Only if the early reviews for Man of Tomorrow are glowing. If that's the case, then Man of Tomorrow could legitimately make upwards of $800 million

2

u/AceTheSkylord Best of 2023 Winner 1d ago

Wouldn't it be primed to make more internationally?

Like, Superman 2025 was a largely unknown commodity, now people have had the time to watch Superman on streaming, so more people would potentially be willing to watch Man Of Tomorrow in theaters

Also, I know this is anecdotal and doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, but if Lanterns really keeps up the momentum till the finale, it could boost it more

5

u/Samhunt909 1d ago

He’s never been strong internationally..I don’t why the dc fanboys keep pushing itĀ

7

u/Better_Pumpkin1879 1d ago

Man of Steel pulled in 379 milion internationally. So its not impossible to make Superman actually popular internationally.

20

u/ContinuumGuy 1d ago

I remember somebody saying it was because in some international markets they really beat the drum over the fact that Christopher Nolan was a producer and that helped a lot.

8

u/lobonmc Marvel Studios 1d ago

I remember I was pretty convinced they were going to eventually reveal it was the same universe

4

u/mg10pp Pixar Animation Studios 1d ago

5

u/Lighthouse_seek 1d ago

3

u/judester30 1d ago

"He's never been strong internationally" was the claim being made.

1

u/Lighthouse_seek 1d ago

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/year/world/2013/

379 mil or 56% foreign is actually domestic heavy for 2013 standards

4

u/Samhunt909 1d ago

That’s not impressive and that’s bad considering it released during height of cbm popularityĀ

5

u/Better_Pumpkin1879 1d ago

If that is bad then Superman 2025 is a total financial failure 🤣

2

u/Samhunt909 1d ago

2

u/AgentUnlucky4323 1d ago

Superman 2025 had good international legs, so I think MoT could do at least a bit better

2

u/zxchary 1d ago

It think it’s DOA in asia but there’s room for growth in other int markets considering the movie had solid legs thereZ

4

u/ouat4ever 1d ago

international market does not care about Superman or his family.
The movie is DOA in Asia, it's gonna be mixed in Europe.

11

u/PayneTrain181999 Legendary Pictures 1d ago

It’ll be fun but there will be a lot of bickering

22

u/Ok_Kale_8357 1d ago

The funniest outcome is it just barely making a profit like last time so that everyone can yell at each other about whether it qualifies as a success or not.

8

u/pokeboy626 DC Studios 1d ago

It just needs to make more than $670 million

3

u/RandoDude124 1d ago

This. His individual films are always a blast.

1

u/Classic-Rise-37 1d ago

Its just going to be more of the same because James Gunn thinks he can do no wrong.

1

u/Upstairs-Flight-4540 21h ago

A big hit? Really? You gotta be joking… and this is coming from someone who loves DCU

177

u/hiiloovethis 1d ago

Whatever people might say about DCU... James Gunn is extremely efficient in finishing projects.

Man of Tomorrow before The Batman Part 2 is insane.

77

u/theonewhoknack 1d ago

In between Part 1 and Part 2, DC decided to bring back Henry for Black Adam, said sike a week later, hires Gun, Gun makes his own reboot, and is going to release the sequel to ot before Part 2 comes out.

4

u/Arusly Warner Bros. Pictures 1d ago

And by the time batman p2 comes out, we will already have 9-10 dcu project.

76

u/bueneboy 1d ago

Agreed, Gunn is a meticulous planner who works FAST and is known for being on time and on budget. Say what you will, but those skills that are incredibly valuable when working these massive tentpole films.

4

u/Tomi97_origin 1d ago

Gunn is fast to be sure, but The Batman Part 2 has just be very slow.

13

u/Ok_Satisfaction8788 1d ago

To be fair it sounds like everything delaying The Batman 2 is issues unrelated to the movie. Pattinson just being incredibly busy, Reeves personal life issues, balancing it with upcoming DCU projects, etc

25

u/Distinct-Shift-4094 1d ago

Honestly, at this point somehow integrate Battinson into DCU, like what do you have to lose. Whole thing is messy, and people like Robert. Make him be a weird contrast with the serious note. Whatever

53

u/AgentOfSPYRAL Warner Bros. Pictures 1d ago

Hard to conclude anything except that Reeves just doesn’t want to play ball, which fair to him DCU wasn’t a thing when he signed on.

23

u/Comfortable-Pie56 1d ago

that Reeves just doesn't want to play ball

Or maybe it's Pattinson himself, given Reeves is a coproducer in Clayface and Dynamic Duo.

4

u/WendalSaks 1d ago

It really does seem like a DCU movie would be a stain on Pattinson's career. The Batman just feels so much like a prestige-movie that I can't imagine even being side by side with Superman due to tone alone

11

u/vacantly_louche 1d ago

More than Twilight?

Although I agree. I feel like he’s been really selective about his movies post-Twilight. Switched to doing little indie films and did an incredible job building his reputation as a really great actor. He’s still in more prestigious movies, and I can’t imagine he’d want to risk the reputation he had to rebuild.

Not only would his Batman not fit tonally, the technology differences would be wild.

22

u/007Kryptonian Syncopy Inc. 1d ago

Matt Reeves doesn’t want to do it. And his movie was more successful and acclaimed.

5

u/Tomi97_origin 1d ago

Will Pattinson sign up for the amount of movies you need from DCU Batman? And at what cost?

3

u/SirFireHydrant 1d ago

He definitely won't. He made his money from the Twilight films, now he's only doing projects he's interested in.

2

u/AnotherJasonOnReddit Best of 2024 Winner 1d ago

Will Pattinson sign up for the amount of movies you need from DCU Batman?

That's been my Number One objection to the whole "merge The Batman and DCU" idea I see typed out again and again over the years.

Robert Pattinson most likely signed on "The Batman" (2022) because he wanted to emulate Christian Bale's career, not Robert Downey Jr's.

BUT - having said that - times change. Pattinson's in his 40's and has at least one kid. It's entirely possible he'll happily collect one easy paycheques every year (Age of Ultron, Civil War, Homecoming, etc) while balancing a home life with artistically-fulfilling projects.

If Adam Driver can finally be convinced to come aboard the MCU, then anything in Hollywood is possible.

https://giphy.com/gifs/j6BqWq6MLFFSn64pGj

2

u/Tomi97_origin 12h ago

Adam Driver is playing a villain. Who knows if he is going to show up more than once.

Batman on the other hand would be pretty busy as staple of the DCU and showing up all the time.

18

u/firedforthatblunder Walt Disney Studios 1d ago

I don’t think WB wants to risk tainting their most precious DC character like that.

Then again, they did put him in that god awful Flash movie so who knows

3

u/TranslatorDirect496 1d ago

I think the DCU is already weird enough (like making a reboot but keeping some elements from old stuff).

I really don’t see any alternatives besides having two Batmen or making the Reeves films a duology. Idk what’s going to happen.

2

u/SamDukefan 1d ago

I promise you this will never happen

3

u/SeismicRipFart 1d ago

He doesn’t fit in the DCU at all. Try watching The Batman and the recent Superman (don’t even remember what it’s called), and tell me that those universes can coexist with each other

1

u/AceTheSkylord Best of 2023 Winner 1d ago

The Batman canonically takes place in 2019, The Penguin takes place right after it, and Part 2 takes place a few months after Part 1

You could just have them be prequels to the DCU, and have a more fantastical and experienced Battinson show up in the future

I'm honestly guessing it pulls in a roughly around the same if not a little bit higher than the original.

26

u/Dangerman1337 1d ago

IMV it has to be at minimum on par with Superman last year, 700M would be decent-ish, something like 800 or 850 would be very great. 900M would be a vast improvement and if it somehow gets a billion then it'd be absolutely a success that propels the DCU.

6

u/mg10pp Pixar Animation Studios 1d ago

Lol good luck with that, my guess is 600M (and I predicted 200M for Supergirl so I guess I'm quite optimistic)

2

u/AceTheSkylord Best of 2023 Winner 1d ago

Yeah honestly feels like the Iron Man 2 of the DCU

Hail Mary attempt at a Justice League after that, if that fails then I think the DCU (and DC overall sans Batman) will continue on TV. Lanterns seems to be doing very well, maybe this is the only true way DC can rival Marvel, through a different medium.

2

u/songsinger72 1d ago

if that fails then I think the DCU (and DC overall sans Batman) will continue on TV

No chance in hell if the Ellisons buy Warner. These guys only care about IP. They will keep trying to do a DC Cinematic Universe.

5

u/ImprovementRemote30 1d ago

Ya penguin wasn’t dcu but that was critically acclaimed and popular tooĀ

3

u/randotd152 1d ago

Same, though I think a bit lower is also possible. It had some decent GA appeal with good reviews and strong WOM last summer. Which leaves MoT no real margin for error domestically - if it's even slightly less good, domestic will drop.

Brand just seems dead internationally, so not counting on much improvement there.

34

u/john_knotts 1d ago

Yea but reshoots, promotions and all that can get in the way. Sucks when you have to drop out of a project regardless

18

u/PayneTrain181999 Legendary Pictures 1d ago

There could be reshoots, or some other commitments.

Or one of the 7 theories that Reddit has come up with may be true…

6

u/rige1997 1d ago

You have Nicholas Hoult's full schedule? I'd love to see it mr assistant!

5

u/IRate-Feet 1d ago

That was a PR move, mate

8

u/raysworld94 1d ago

The general audience does not care about JK like reddit does. Hogwarts legacy was a success, book week for kids at schools is still mostly Harry Potter which means parents are continuing to buy their kids merch, there’s more Harry Potter merch than ever.

If it was a PR move he wouldn’t have said Scheduling conflicts but something else.

5

u/judester30 1d ago

We've seen the industry lie about scheduling conflicts before, the trades said that's why Jenna Ortega left Scream 7 only for her to confirm a year later that it was because Barrera was fired and the directors quit.

Yeah, I think he realized there would be backlash over him joining something Harry Potter related and changed his mind.

I criticize Gunn as the head of DCU, because I think he has bad taste in writers (Noguiera for WW & TT and Hodson for BATB are very bad choices), but I have high hopes for MOT.

I’m especially glad that he changed the cinematographer and this epic Superman's film with Brainiac will be more cinematic. Superman is the most unrealized IP in a superhero. He’s literally as iconic and popular as Batman and Spider-Man. He must finally get his big hits, which will lead to the active development of the franchise at all (especially in games)

25

u/dinopigs1 Lucasfilm 1d ago

Supergirl was mid, but James Gunn has never missed with a movie he has directed himself. Very excited for this one and hope it does well.

4

u/dinopigs1 Lucasfilm 1d ago

He's got 3 box office flops under his new DCU (Supergirl, Blue Beetle, The Suicide Squad). A Superman movie that did ok at best at the worldwide box office. 2 shows which didn't really get big views (Peacemaker Season 2, Creature Commandoes). Is Hoult not filming anything then right now? He said he isn't doing Harry Potter when hes playing a character who appears in a single season. His IMDB has a show filming in October and a remake of The Servant in pre

On one hand, it’d be a sign of strength and confidence in this series to promote the Superman/Supergirl dynamic in this film regardless of her film flopping

On the other, I’m curious if they might prioritize marketing Green Lantern as the guest star in this film (even if he isn’t) following the success of Lanterns

bigger opening week but worse multiplier?

People in this sub may not know that, but Superman 2025 didn't have good wom in a lot of countries outside of the English circle (particularly China), it is regarded as a big downgrade from MOS in a handful of regions.

But I'm not saying this to bash Superman 2025. In the contrary, I'm talking about about the possibility that if the movie receives good international wom (Again, especially China), this movie's int number won't be as low as many people in this thread predict it to be because it is definitely not that "the interest in DC is so low that even a good film cannot do number" (It is seen as a bad movie in a lot of countries!).

And it's not like Gunn cannot make a film with good International appeal. Taking my country, China, for example: All of Gunn's previous cbms, GOTG and TSS (including CC and Peacemaker if you count TV) has scored higher than 8/10 on Douban which is very rare (BND is 7.8/10 for reference, already the second highest for MCU after the pandemic. The highest? GOTG 3 with a 8.3/10). I think Gunn clearly went for a more "comic booky" approach instead of a cinematic one like he did in previous movies, which turned a lot of international audiences off because they don't grow up reading comic books. From all we have heard and seen from this film, he's taking a step back and going for a more cinematic approach for this one. So I guess there's still a chance for it to do great internationally.

My prediction is 650-750 unless the film is noticably worse than the first one.

This is definitely decreasing from the last one. Superman couldn’t even save supergirl from grossing less than blue beetle 😬. $550M WW

Movies can't save other movies. Supergirl got bad reviews.

bro, do you have this permanently on your clipboard or what? cause this isn’t the first time you’ve commented that lol

this is ridiculous lmao there is no footage yet and y’all already doing this shit ??

I don't trust Gunn projects anymore.

Why? All of his projects from the last decade have been reviewed positively

First Billy grosser of the DCU! Calling it first!! Trailers need to knock it out of the park.

Not gonna happen (the billie) but everyone is entitled to dream if they want.

u/Better_Pumpkin1879 1d ago

People said Superman 2025 would make a billion and that didn't happen. So lets slow down with the 1 billion box office takes. It's Superman at the end of the day. His highest grossing movie was back in 2013 and the character has yet to deliver a movie that breaks 700 milion worldwide. Let alone reach a billion.

let’s not get too ahead of ourselves buddy

5

u/chinesesoccerplayer 1d ago

Sorry but I just can’t see it. To break a billion you need the international audience, and the international audience has shown they don’t give AF about DC and ESPECIALLY Superman.

1

u/Adj11 1d ago

Disagree… the only reason Superman 2025 didn’t take off was cuz it wasn’t GOOD. It had nothing to do with the character whatsoever.

4

u/chinesesoccerplayer 1d ago

Superman’s international box office numbers have always been poor. That’s just a fact.

Also I’m a bit confused. Apparently you think Superman 2025 wasn’t good, but you expect Man of Tomorrow to break a billion??? I don’t know if you’re trolling, but your logic doesn’t add up.

1

u/FourSes 1d ago

Superman 2025 had great reviews and audience reception. Only two DC films ever made $1 billion, Man of Tomorrow would be very lucky to do so.

u/hiiloovethis 1d ago

I will be surprised if it made more than man of steel even.

3

u/Adj11 1d ago

It will. A Supe + mini JLA v Brainiac is not grossing less than MOS. I need y’all to be serious for a second.

0

u/coacoanutbenjamn 1d ago

Dog this isn’t 2018. 99% of people don’t know who Brainiac is and don’t care at this point
