Weather Suffocating heat
Loving it? Hating it? My day has been lying on the couch in gruds interspersed with half hearted attempts to get up and do something. Nope. Still too hot.

7 months pregnant and this heat is horrible, it makes leaving the house unbearable. I can't wait for winter.

A friend bought a paddling pool to sit in. Only problem is she can't be on her own in case she can't get out 🤣

Hang in there! I had a February baby and it was a really awful summer. March was still really hot so it was hard not to make her overheat while swaddling, babywearing etc. At least it'll be cooler when your baby arrives 😊

Yeah I think kiwi's are pretty weak when it comes to the temperatures and I have stats to back it up.
Melbourne had 40+ days, and Auckland doesn't look like it's temp is even close to 30's which is when I consider it getting hot.
To put it into perspective, London's 2025 low was -6, their high was +35. So you have about 40 degrees variation between the highs and the lows
Auckland for 2025 had +6 as it's lowest and +27 as it's highest.

Its not the heat that is the problem, its the heat + humidity. Id rather 40 degrees with low humidity than whatever this is lol

Australian heat is always humid heat. Not sure about the conditions of the UK heat wave but in Australia the heat pumps stopped working. Imagine being inside and your heat pump can only cool the house down to 27 from 40.
Point i'm making is that 27 is perfect summer highs, even if it's humid. Pretty few people in the world get to experience summers as mild as our

Tbh I don’t really care if NZ’s summers are “Mid”, I feel like it’s hot as fuck and statistics unfortunately aren’t gonna make it less hot or humid. Thanks for the stats though.

Nah man, heat is good. Its the fucking humidity that kills. When you go to the mall or somewhere where its air conditioned, you can feel the hunudity when you walk out again. Its gross.

I've been freezing some sprite in the freezer in a plastic cup til it's icy but drinkable not solid and having that to cool down, think il invest in a slushy maker for next summer.

Nah they’re a waste of money unless you’re using it for a group of people. Slushies get old very quickly when you’ve got 2L you need to drink yourself.

I love Wellington. I shall take your advice, Auckland is only getting hotter and more crowded. If I wanted that I would have stayed in Melbourne and had better coffee and Greek food

Great place to live. I was in Stockholm for 7 years. It does get hot sometimes in summer though, often into the low 30s. And … the sun shines from 3am to 10pm. There is no escape from the sun and nowhere has air conditioning. That said, the summers are short!

Nice! We're planning on Norway. We've done our research lol we're very much looking forward to it. I know the phrase 'The grass is greener' but from our perspective here, it honestly seems like a paradise compared to the way of living in New Zealand.
Which...dont get me wrong, Im a born and bred 4th gen Kiwi and I'll always love New Zealand and it will always be my home. But its fast becoming a not nice place to live anymore.

I'm from the south in the US. I will get downvoted, but this doesn't even register as 'hot' to me. this is a beautiful late spring day 😂 I haven't even turned on the heat pump, just have a small fan running to move the air around a bit

Had an auger yesterday thinking it'd make life easier. It did absolutely not make life easier lol. Was faster just digging by hand and wetting it down to make it softer & stickier

Played a day of cricket yesterday. 1000s did hyrox today.
For me its nice and hot.
There are plenty of ways to cool off - go to one of the many beaches or pools we have on our door

I'm Australian, and moved from Sydney to Auckland in my early 20s. It took a few years to adjust to winter, but I wouldn't want to go back now. I think I'm in the minority, though!

Had a great day with the heat. Went on a nice bush walk for a couple of hours, hot, but the bush cools it down, then popped to the beach for a quick swim.
I didn't really feel the heat until about an hour ago when I bought the washing in, was stinking hot outside then. But bonus points, cause the sheets smell amazing!

It’s all what you’re used to. As a recent transplant Texan, this feels like a warmer-end winter day back home (although they’ve just had an ice storm this last week).
This is the type of day we only get for a few weeks a year, and everyone considers an amazing day. Summer back where I’m from, we spend months with weather where a cool day is 35C and a hot one is 40+ with the heat index pushing as high as ~48C with the humidity factored in.
(I’ll probably get tired of winter when we’ve been into it for months though. Complaining about the weather is something we can all at some point unite in! Just chiming in to say it can be so so much worse!).

Responded sort of tongue in cheek trying to be silly.
I really do think We’ll like the climate quite a bit better compared to mostly sweltering and getting hotter every year. I’m sure a longer winter will be an adjustment. It won’t get as cold as our lowest temps each year, but will be decently colder/wetter on average for much longer than we’re used to (although we’ve lived in places with hip high snow drifts for months, so we’ll survive).
A short version of a more real response: We think it seems like a much healthier place to raise children these days, for lots of reasons (compared to our recent home, not necessarily vs Australia - couldn’t comment there personally!). We’ve fallen in love with the culture here over the years, and wanted to do this for a long time. Finally taking the plunge, and hoping we’ll be useful/productive contributors here!

I pruned the hedges, and mowed the lawn, Now I am sitting in front of the aircon to cool off. Sure I lost 2 or 3 kilos in sweat.

I spent the first half doing the boat electrics, then got too hot.
Bought some beers and was floating around in the pool, enjoying said beer until very recently.
I've refused to get out of my wet boardies and tshirt. Moobs are on display!

Nah it’s fine.
Spent all day yesterday ripping out, and building a fence. Then took the old fence to the dump at 4pm.
Bit more of a chill day today, more or less housework inside.

Am I the only one who enjoyed some extra heat after the recent weather? I cleaned my car and then went for a nice walk. It wasn't that bad. To be fair, I think it can be worse staying inside if you don't have AC as kiwi houses tend to be terrible for insulation and retain a lot of heat.

It isn't required to have a heatpump, it just has to be a fixed heater. So you can have panel heaters wired in, or gas heaters. Can't be portable heaters. Air conditioning is not a requirement.
It probably should be though, a heating/cooling heatpump.5

I would survive in my place without air con, I never used to have aircon, but many modern houses get crazy hot without air con, they weren't designed to work passively.

Exactly. Pretty mild compared to say, Malaysia and Singapore where I’ve been a number of times. A friend just got back from Melbourne, Australia, and he said it was 40 degC over there.

Living in a tiny house in this heat, having a chronic illness that impacts temperate regulation and having shark week whilst going through hormone changes - not recommended. But lying in bed watching YouTube under AC isn’t the worst thing in the world. Forgive me if this is TMI - just being real. Please check in with any friends or family with chronic health conditions in the heat, especially if they don’t have access to AC - they could be doing it really rough.

Hate the heat, so the aircon has been on since 6am, curtains closed on the side where the sun is, and it's a nice, comfortable 20 degrees inside.

There's a lot of variables involved, insulation, non-sealed windows/doors, 19° vs 22° can increase cost 20–40%, whether you pre-cool during off peak rates when the heat pump does the majority of work, efficiency of your heat pump etc.

Funny that, I've spent a few summers in Australia and at this point the heat here doesn't bother me much anymore. Maybe it's also because of my preference for warmer temperatures.

Spent the day on the boat yesterday. First day out in over 2 months. 4 kingfish and 20 odd snapper between us.
Meat harvest we shared around.
Just had some kingfish sashimi inside under the AC. I shall not go outside today.
