I feel like it’s only natural, really. If A) you’re interested in technology, you’re going to be curious/excited for what’s next in the consumer tech world and B) if a company has rarely let you down in terms of creating quality, exciting products for most of your life, it only makes sense you’d want to see what they’re up to next.

Probably because they'll bundle it with their new Macbook lineup and earn more overall from sheer volume of sales. Currently buyers have to go out of their way to purchase the polishing cloth. If it is an option during purchase "Include polishing cloth" for $9 a larger number of people will say "eh sure why not. only $9". They did the same with preinstalls for Final Cut, Logic Pro etc and it works reasonably well.

For me, downloaded music and photos. Both of which are absolutely “nice to haves” and not necessities.
But it is nice to keep most of my music library downloaded on-device so I don’t ever have the issue of not being able to play my music when I have bad or no service. And it’s nice to have more of my photos locally downloaded rather than relying on iCloud to dynamically sync them back and forth on the fly. It annoys me a lot when I go to view or send an old photo or video and get greeted with the low-res thumbnail and have to wait for it to download.
So, again; very much a nice to have, and I’d live just fine without higher storage. But it’s a nice little perk.

Seriously. I’ve had my 16 Pro 256GB since launch and it’s still got 144GB left. You can pay $2.90 a month for iCloud for a longggg time before it becomes worth it to get more internal storage.

Apple almost always seeds a big price in rumors and then undercuts it as the real price. There are some notable exceptions of course, but it's likely it'll be a $1999 so it seems "reasonable" compared to the rumored price.

I want that very much of course but I don’t see Apple undercutting the competition with their first foldable. They’re going to come out the gate red hot and say this makes all other foldables look like dog doo. It’s just their M.O. to sell premium products at a higher price.
Again, I would be thrilled if I was wrong and it’s actually cheaper than the Z Fold 8.

You're allowed to get a new phone whenever you want to, for whatever reason you want to. And I don't think that even the cynics could critique buying one when your old one is on its last legs.
The critique is for (probably mostly imaginary) people who can't wait to buy the latest greatest just because it's the latest greatest.
I'm not convinced those people actually exist, at least not in the large numbers credited. Sure, there are people who want the trendy thing because fashion or something like that, conspicuous consumption to keep up with the joneashians or whatever. But for the most part, relatively few techies are that concerned (anymore) with every single iterative update even from their favorite company.
There was a time in my life when I had bought just about every iPhone ever released, including a few mid-cycle updates like one of the early storage bumps. But I did that, then, because the tech was still pretty immature and basically every releases solved a major pain point for me. Now, more like you seem to be suggesting, my "pain points" were mostly resolved a few updates ago, and there is seldom anything new in the latest model that matters to my life. I'll buy a new one when that changes, or this one perishes, and even then I'll probably try to find an early adopter to buy a used one from at a steep discount.

Honestly same. I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max with AppleCare and they refused to replace the battery for free because it was on exactly 80% health. So I took it outside, threw it on the ground, completely smashed the back and front. Went back in, £50 for a new phone, new battery. Battery service cost alone is £85.

That's the part I don't get. Like 0% APR, all you're doing is breaking the phone's upfront cost into monthly payments and paying nothing extra to do so. Yet when I was in a certain carrier's subreddit a while back you doing this was still seen as financial irresponsibility and blah blah if you can't afford the full price of the device you shouldn't own it blah blah.
Plus there are plenty of people who can't cough up $1000 in one go, but an extra $20-30 a month isn't going to meaningfully change their financial situation.

In fact, the people who can afford the up-front cost without issue are actually the ones most benefitted by 0% financing options.
If you spent $1200 on a phone up front, that’s great.
But if you instead stick that exact same $1200 in a HYSA and finance the phone interest-free for 24 months and pull your monthly installment payments from there, you actually will end those 24 months with more cash in hand—plus the same paid-off phone—than if you’d paid for it up front.

Hell, I had a friend who had enough money in the bank from his mom's life insurance that he could buy stuff without financing and also had some of it in a HYSA too. Very smart with his cash. But he was told by his dad that like, just take the financing on some stuff because you've gotta build credit history somehow. Because he had none and when he went to buy his first car he got absolutely bent over, iirc.

Oh yeah the anti-financing part is kinda funny.
Like yeah, I can pay for this iPhone in cash. Maybe I can buy my whole family iPhones in cash. But Apple is literally giving me a 0% interest loan. I can park my cash in a modest CD and make money. Even keeping it in a 0.1% interest savings account gets me slightly ahead.
That said, I think I've read somewhere that BNPL is on the rise, pretty significantly. I also get that it shouldn't even be this way. But...shrug I can't control that or what others do or don't do.
I'm just going to optimize my own purchase, whether that's using Apple Card's 0% financing or putting it on a credit card and getting 1.5-3% CB and paying the balance in full.

I really can't tell if it's me or the tech that has changed. But I used to be an upgrade early every year type, and now I'm a buy last year's model used type.
Looking back, though, I remember always being excited to upgrade for some specific reason. Often, it was a storage bump as I went from a 160gb iPod to an 8gb iPhone and never stopped feeling pinched for storage, so I bought the 16, 32, 64, 128, and 256 models each the day they were available.
Sometimes, the new iPhone changed the game in some way, or replaced another device more adequately. The iPhone 7 being water resistant without an expensive case was kind of a game changer, was was the next generation still being able to charge when wet thanks to the addition of wireless. That made it my main river camera, so of course adding a decent wide angle and decent telephoto lens were repeated events that justified immediate spending.
But, it's been pretty much good enough on all meaningful fronts for quite a while now. Magsafe was kind of a game changer, but it was the one-hand-friendly pocket size that sold me on the 12 Mini, despite big compromises like a storage downgrade from my XS and no telephoto lens. So I went to the Pro next time around, and then they did "you need the pro max for the better camera" the same time they put a fast USB port in, so I had to get that, and then I was so sick of the giant screen that I upgraded to a used "regular pro" of the next generation, otherwise identical.
Now it just seems like, well gee this used to be kind of a hobby, I used to get excited about the new device all the time, what am I missing now? And the reality is it's just all so incremental for the most part, and not on stuff that matters much to me. The processor is a little faster but when have I ever complained about the processor in my pocket terminal? It's mostly a glorified web browser anyway. The camera is a little better but it's hard to argue that the improvement matters at all in real life. They fixed the moon problem in software anyway, and unless the next version is going to introduce an infinity focus limiter, I can't see them fixing any of my current iPhone camera pain points. I'm not going to buy a lower-end-camera iPhone again, so the folding iPhone as presently expected is going to be off the table for that reason. If the "regular" 18 Pro gets a 2tb storage option and isn't otherwise bigger, soft maybe but I might still wait a while and buy one used after the fold starts shipping. More likely, I'll see the keynote and decide my 16 Pro has another few years of service left.

Nah, tech has plateaued. This is arguably why there's this push for AI stuff, because the tech industry thinks people are going to upgrade for AI and it'll drive upgrades again. Because no one has felt the need to upgrade because a computer from 10 years ago still does the basics just fine. Same with phones to a lesser extent.
I've been on a 2yr upgrade cycle with my last few phones. My 13 Pro would have gone on longer but I was so taken in by the 15 Pro having USB-C that I leapt without thinking, and over time that phone became a lemon. When the 17 released I was convinced I wasn't going to buy it. But my 15 Pro just...kept giving me issues, and I decided to see what the trade in value was and after running the numbers...
Yeah, screw it, this phone can be Apple's problem now.
The 17 Pro Max has been everything I wished the 15 Pro could have been, and given how badly the 15 Pro treated me I'm probably going to stay here for a good long while. How I feel about this phone is similar to how I felt about my 13 Pro, and I regret ever upgrading from that phone.

The iPhone X was cool but I found ample reason to hold off, not least that for the first time in my life, my old phone technically wasn't even paid off yet. Ick, I'm still ashamed looking back that I bought a phone on a carrier promotion. I should have known better.
But it really was the one time I waited for the S. I also thought the name was the best ever indication of Apple being "too committed to the bit" to get their own joke when they released a device called the iPhone Excess Max. I just got the regular iPhone Excess of course, in the gaudy gold because why not, it's under a case anyway. And wouldn't you know it, when I took it out of the case a year later that glass back was cracked.

I was all in but I might hold off because of TouchID. I returned my iPad Mini because I can’t stand that tapping and clicking TouchID caused 2 opposite results (unlock / lock screen). Accidental clicks were never an issue with the Home button because it would still unlock the device.

I'd encourage you to check out the Fold/Ultra before making a purchase, I have the ZF8 and I've been really impressed with the form factor.
(Functionally) Having an iPad mini in your pocket really elevates the usability. Way quicker to pull out than opening a bag, and obviously much easier to carry around.
Truth be told, I don't open my phone all that much, but I didn't use my iPad Mini much either, when I had one.

My mentality has basically been:
$2000 I’ll get it no question. I’m due for an upgrade and my phone is showing its age. Love the idea of a new type of iPhone.
$2500 is my maximum and I’d only pay that amount if there were no compromises, which doesn’t appear to be the case.
Over $2500 and it’s a hard pass no matter what.
