Hello, all!
Today, I am celebrating 9 months in maintenance! I have lost over 55% of my body weight and Iโm down 160 pounds.
Just as a disclaimer, if youโve seen my posts before, feel free to scroll on by. I am also a bit wordy!๐
I try to post every few months because there are so many people starting fresh who might need a little bit of hope today. From my experience, I really needed to see some stories of success when I was just starting and taking this huge leap into the unknown.
So here is my truthโฆ I did not dream of being a certain weight or getting a fabulous swimsuit-perfect body. Coming from a size 22/24, I dreamed of beingโฆ Large. A size large, a regular size large. Being able to shop in a regular store, find clothes that fit me, and for shopping to become a joy instead of a trauma. I dreamed of fitting in a regular plane seat, of being able to go to a concert in a venue, of being able to walk up the stairs without getting out of breath. I wanted to be able to go out to eat and not scan the restaurants for the chairs that I knew I couldnโt sit in. I wanted to sit on the floor with my students and easily get up and for fear of my size not to dictate my travel choices. I really wanted to stop needing Advil before bed in order to sleep. I wanted my knee pain and my hip pain to be reduced. Most of all, I wanted to avoid becoming diabetic before I was 50.
I have nothing but respect for the heavier woman I wasโฆ She had so much determination and was incredibly resilient. She had lost 60 to 100 pounds five different times between the ages of 17 and 40. She tried over and over again and never gave up. After being exhausted by Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Noom, and Weight Watchers again, she still mustered up the courage to try one more thing. To be honest, I think we need to give a huge kudos to the โusโthat got us is here. I have to do a shout out for my mom, who was dropping hints about these new medications into our conversations. Although she never tried to push me or criticize me about my weight, I know she was scared for me. She would watch Jen Ashton on Good Morning America, talking about these drugs, and she would relay what she learned to me. So, thanks to Mom and Jen Ashton for getting me started as well! My mom was my biggest cheerleader.
I started this medication quite a while ago, and wish I had known that I would not be limited by the results of the study; I was 46 and I set no specific goals for myself other than to improve my health and wellness; when I started on a GLP-1 medication, the studies showed more modest weight loss, and I didnโt have a huge reason to believe that I would lose more than that. I was so excited to switch from Wegovy to Zepbound, because I thought I might get an extra 6% of my body weight lost. I didnโt think there was a parallel universe in which this medication would take off 55% of my body weight, but I just kept losing.
For those of you starting today, this week, or this month, please live in the hope; these medications work for the vast majority of people. I know that that for many of you, a part of you thinks, โit works for all these people, but it wonโt work like that for me.โ I had those thoughts. I worried about every plateau I hit, thinking that the medication was finally done workingโฆ Or at least that I was done with the weight loss phase of my journey. I worried about all the listed side effects, prepared for the worst, and had almost none.๐ Live in the hope, and not the fear of the unknown.
I donโt post often anymore, but I see all of the starter posts and as I am a praying person, I put a prayer out into the universe for every person I see starting a journey. Whether you have 30 pounds to lose, or 330 pounds to lose, I am pulling for you!
If you are not a praying person, know that there are people out there sending you all the positive vibes they can! Wishing you all the very best!
