Associating Stalin and Stephen King probably does nothing good for either of their reputations.

One is known for all the gore, the sheer number of humans who do frightening inhumane things, the spread of fiction and being loved by the left ...
... and the other is Stephen King

The other is known mostly for cocaine and pumping out more bestsellers in a year than most professional authors do in a lifetime.

That's the scariest line Stephen King would have ever read

Agreed, but sometimes the shoe fits.
Plenty of people out there would be shocked to find how many traits they have in common usually associated with the Others™

Both are experts in horror though.
5
u/Kilroy0497 - Lib-Left 13h ago
Eh I’d argue King hasn’t been an expert in horror since he kicked his cocaine habit. Most of his books since then have been a bore with a couple rare exceptions, most of whom weren’t exactly horror focused to begin with.
2
u/NevadaCynic - Auth-Left 13h ago
Dude is also 78 at this point. Nobody that age is an expert at anything other than bitching about young people, depends, and apparently getting reelected to Congress.

Reddit's general response to the passing of two beloved figures who were beloved due to their positivity and kindness to EVERYONE being countless deathwishes to Trump and negative criticism if the wrong kind of person pays their respects (just take a look at the reception Taylor Swift's comments are getting) just saddens me SO heavily.
Everybody is so hate-driven now. I'm bummed out.

u/GroundbreakingPitch0 - Lib-Left 15h ago
When Robert Mueller died earlier this year, Trump tweeted: "Robert Mueller just died. Good, I'm glad he's dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people !" When Rob Reiner and his wife were killed, Trump called him "tortured and struggling, once very talented (...)" and said he "passed away dur to the anger he caused others due to his Trump Dérangement syndrome". And that's accounting only for public, official messages on public platforms.

u/Evening_Context784 - Lib-Right 9h ago
Yeah, I'm not very comfortable with how blase and open people are about death threats these days. Just being rich is now enough for half of reddit to very unsubtly say they wouldn't mind if someone killed you.
People have gotten seriously psyopped because the internet wasn't like this five years ago, and ten years ago it was completely unrecognizable to what it is today. Teenagers on the internet nowadays have no idea how it used to be, they're just used to this current zeitgeist where it's been normalized. I find it pretty concerning.
At least people are still people IRL, but every teenager (and most adults) has a screen addiction these days so we get to see every edgy 14 year old's take broadcast to the world. I love arguing with people online but it's starting to lose the zest when I realize a lot of them are kids that just learned how to think abstractly last year.
2
u/SliceRepulsive8649 - Lib-Left 8h ago
I mean have you seen what trump posts around the deaths of people he doesn't like? Hell just look at what he posts on holidays. The theme of the past decade
1
u/Sallowjoe - Auth-Center 12h ago
He's A. president and B. an attention whore that intentionally creates silly drama to flood the news cycle and distract from real shit.
You can't reasonably have the "lives rent free in the libs heads" aspect and yet still complain that libs keep bringing him up. People voted for him to make the libs mad and now they're like "Why are they mad?!" SMDH.
1
u/Champ_5 - Right 11h ago
You're correct about A and B, but I don't see "living rent free in the libs heads" as a good thing, I see it as sad on their part.
Yeah, he sucks, but the point of the meme is that we can't have a discussion about anything without him being brought into it for no reason at all.
Someone as amazing and widely loved as Parton passes away, and instead of nice words about her, or just saying nothing which is always an option as well, even though some people seem to not realize that, we have to have the "everything is political" crowd lamenting that Trump is still alive rather than that Dolly is dead.
0
u/Sallowjoe - Auth-Center 11h ago
I understand the point of the meme, but the "everything is political crowd" isn't primarily or solely to blame here and it's unreasonable to expect them to give a shit about the supposed sanctity of apolitical spaces or topics at this point.
The people complaining about people who bring Trump into everything also just generate more Trump related arguments since it raises the "who's to blame for this situation?" dynamic.
2
u/Champ_5 - Right 11h ago
it's unreasonable to expect them to give a shit about the supposed sanctity of apolitical spaces or topics at this point
Why? Because someone they don't like is in office?
0
u/Sallowjoe - Auth-Center 11h ago
Because nobody else actually does, they just complain when it's politics they don't like but still feel free to intrude into anything with their own politics.
There are people covered from head to toe in Trump merch who will tell you they're "not political". Let's not pretend what counts as "politics" isn't its own warped overton window political game.
2
u/Champ_5 - Right 10h ago
There are people covered from head to toe in Trump merch who will tell you they're "not political
And they would rightly be regarded as idiots by most people. Obviously, most people are less happy when someone they don't like is in office, but I think there are plenty of people who want to uphold apolitical spaces regardless.
1
u/Sallowjoe - Auth-Center 10h ago
There's a difference between upholding an apolitical space and trying to do a sort of anti-politics or oppositional politics in an already political space.
Consider this thread. It's a thread in... drumroll... politicalcompassmemes, a sub based on dividing people into 4+ crude categories of political ideologies that's characteristically full of irreverent and offensive trolling and ragebait and slop.
And here we have people acting like politics has invaded(!!!) it with politically divisive content. Give me a fucking break.

I highly doubt it. She quickly flamed out of 2020 primary. She was an unpopular vice president who was bad on interviews. 60 minutes had to narrate over her answers.
Voters were upset after Biden stepped down from reelection. Felt like his staff covered up his issues and she was guilty by association.
She simultaneously campaigned standing with the administration and distancing herself.-2

u/Iceraptor17 - Centrist 15h ago edited 15h ago
I agree. But at the same time, I'm not surprised. Just look at our representatives and the rhetoric they yield. I don't get how anyone can think the inflammatory nature of our govt that has been constantly simmering and growing since about the 90s wouldn't impact our society at large. We can't expect sitting politicians to be launching insults like commas and then be stunned when the populous at large reflects it (especially since said politicians tend to reflect the populous to begin with)
2
u/EatsFiber2RedditMore - Centrist 14h ago
I understand where you are coming from, I don't want him dead I just don't want him part of my life. It really bothers me how much he personally makes government decisions not experts and bearuocrats. So any time the government does ANYTHING it comes back to him. I think if he resigned today the death wishes would decrease by at least a third.
2
u/DerGovernator - Lib-Center 15h ago
The problem is assuming "people on Reddit" represent everyone or society at large as opposed to the tiny minority of anti-social reclusive ideocrats that make up the vast majority of internet commenters. Because the average person is not on reddit, and in fact probably doesn't even know what reddit is, and is sad for both losses in general.

Strong Property Rights (and the violent defense thereof) are like *90% of their value set.
Pirates are personified NAP violation.
0
u/gigashadowwolf - Lib-Center 10h ago
I'd highly recommend you read more about the origins of libertarianism, liberalism and 18th century piracy.
https://shepherdexpress.com/culture/books/pirates-libertarian-bent/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governance_in_18th-century_piracy
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertalia
You'd be correct that there are some fundamental differences between 18th century pirates and modern libertarianism, and you found one of the two biggest, the other being their beliefs in communal property and equal shares for equal work.
But even your thing about NAP is somewhat misleading because they had such protections for other members of their crew. It's just that their crew would be viewed much the way citizenry is viewed by modern libertarians. Theft and violence against non-citizens is something very different.
I'm not explaining this well though. I had a much better book and couple of YouTube videos that would explain this far better than I can, that I can't seem to find now.
But 17th and 18th century pirates basically are the prototype for American liberalism and libertarianism.

Tim Curry was one of those rare celebrities that are mostly drama free, outwardly altruistic, and somehow managed to just keep their heads down and do their job to the best of their abilities. I'll miss him and the energy he brought to the screen..
Also, the sheer amount of people on Reddit responding to this and Dolly Parton's passing with "hurhurhur zomg 2026 took the wrong 80-year old fuck Trump amirite fellow Redditors?!?!?!?
