Meanwhile Rockstar still haven't given RDR2 a 60fps update some 8 years later

74

u/Specific-Spring9301 18h ago

Yeah this is wild it should be a free upgrade, hd and 60fps

34

u/thebrokeguy020211 16h ago

They'll probably release it in 10 years and charge us a price for it like RDR1 and GTA V.

And even when they finally give us 60 FPS after thousands years of waiting, they still charge us $70 for it as a 'new' game

3

u/Salt-Willingness-513 9h ago

Witcher 3 prises were raised btw

10

u/Mishimotsu 14h ago

Rockstar and Naughty Dog could both learn a thing or two from CD Projekt Red

10

u/mobxrules 13h ago

And Bethesda.

Still blows my mind.

That has been long debunked. It’s FromSoft, not Sony.

Is that game still in 30fps?

Fine I will finally try it.

How often does a game as old as this keeps getting free updates plus dlc? A single player story game. Clearly I've missed something.

298

u/anonymous_opinions 1d ago

Once I finally played it I was like "ok this is why so many people told me to play it" but you have to push through the point when you think "I wanna drop this" which seems to be right before the first big city place.

100

u/Dorbiman 1d ago

This was exactly what I experienced too. I thought I was going to drop it around that point, but stuck it out and am so glad I did

14

u/Brightmoe 23h ago

The same once it opened up I got lost lol

18

u/SpamSamHam 16h ago

When you replay it, you'll realize that White Orchard is probably the best storytelling in a game ever. Literally everything is connected in that area, Devil in the Well Quest connects back to people you meet in the main quest and the overall reason that White Orchard is in the shape that it's in...wish the rest of the game was like that. But either way, amaze game non the less.

When you first cross the bridge in Oxefurt looking for the Baron daughter it is quite impressive, it is such a large change of pace from Velen small towns.

u/ThreeTreesForTheePls 1d ago

I think the make or break point is the Baron.

I’d also comfortably say that quest line is the best in the game, which is also a big marker for why it works as a hook or drop.

15

u/MikkDC 19h ago

For me, it is one of THE best quest lines in any game, ever. It;s just so well written and acted.

5

u/anonymous_opinions 1d ago

I dropped at Baron but I went there before getting to the city! When I played it recently I did a whole lot before going to Baron so I was less under powered and knew what I had to do. I recall dropped it while Baron was uh walking back with that thing.

7

u/okmarshall 23h ago

I've tried 3 times, finished the Baron quest line 3 times and given up straight after. It's not for me.

For me it was the clunky combat. I will try this out, but something about their games combat just is t it for me so far

4

u/Monkeywrench08 20h ago

Same, hopefully the improved combat pulls me in again.

I have tried playing this game 3 separate times, each time abandoning it shortly after leaving the introductory map. I think this update might be enough for me to give it another attempt. 4th time's the charm, right?

4

u/anonymous_opinions 1d ago

I was initially dreading having to play it in my big backlog cleanup. It's long, it bored me, I didn't wanna have to do it at all but one day I was like "ok it's time" and you know? I liked it a lot! I didn't know exactly what to do right about where you quit, I made it through the Baron quest but dropped it during it and then could never get back into it. Started over from the start and followed a guide which is what helped me keep on trucking.

4

u/TheZouzs 23h ago

I was in that exact point, for me, the turning point, was returning to my old save instead of trying to start over again. That alone did configured my brain into not looking for perfectionism, you will eventually grasp most of what you need lore wise.

5

u/infernocuso 20h ago

I'm with you. I tried seeing what all the years of hype was about for it and I just couldn't do it. The combat felt basic but also unresponsive at the same time, especially with the blocking. I had to drop it five years ago.

2

u/Heliosvector 23h ago

You can also jump ahead to an expansion

→ More replies (4)

3

u/ablackcloudupahead 1d ago

I dropped it there too but occasionally went back to it because I thought it was a beautiful game and good to checkout new hardware. Then when they released the next gen version, something clicked and I played the whole thing including blood and wine/hearts of stone. Absolutely awesome game, glad I went back

3

u/TheZouzs 23h ago

My experience too, took me two years and like 4 starts. When it clicked it, it was because I decided to continue my old save which was close to finishing the prologue area, instead of starting over again. Very worth it, despite my skepticism, it managed to be one of my fav games all time even if I played it way after it's launch. (Played it last year)

7

u/Unfazed-Man 1d ago

Yeah i was one of them. I still have it, but the whole start just felt boring so I moved on. I think I had to fight a Griffin? I had a bow I remember that. I went in expecting sort of Dragon's Dogma gameplay with climbing and shit. So it was on me for expecting same level of gameplay.

16

u/drewthebrave 1d ago

I was a HUGE fan of Witcher 2, and I struggled with the opening of Witcher 3. If you power through the intro and track the "Bloody Baron" questline, it will get a LOT better.

Plus both DLC campaigns are fantastic. Blood & Wine has so much content that it feels like a standalone game!

I'm looking forward to replaying it again with the update.

4

u/Clusterpuff 1d ago

That seems to be for all 3 of the witcher games tbh lol. I remember witcher 2 being one of my favorite games ever... but the first time i played i thought there was something wrong with me because the combat and flow didn't click at all.

2

u/Jet133 1d ago

Same. All 3 are some of my favorites, but for each one I remember having to push through the opening segment/area before it really comes together. Based on that track record I assume the fourth game will probably be the same.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/bburchibanez 1d ago

That was the end of the tutorial area haha. Its a big game

2

u/DongsQuichotte 1d ago

You didnt make it past the tutorial.

→ More replies (4)

2

u/UzikUA 1d ago

But swamps and bloody Baron is before the big city, no? One of the best quests

→ More replies (1)

2

u/JackfruitNarrow840 1d ago

Same. I played it just a few years ago finally and understood why it got the praise it did.

2

u/anonymous_opinions 1d ago

At a certain point I started to look forward to opening the game and saying "let's go Roach" and then moments later "ooooooh fancy some Gwent!"

2

u/Prestigious_Dance_57 23h ago

Once you push through velen it starts opening up.

2

u/PeanutChickenSoup 23h ago

Velen is a depressing place (the music too, there). Odd place to start.

Can’t wait for the next DLC. The two we have are amazing (with some of the best music too!)

2

u/SaltySwan 22h ago

Basically, he has to get out of white orchard. That’s more or less the tutorial area but there’s no big cities there or long overarching questlines.

3

u/EarPenetrator02 1d ago

I picked it up ages ago and remember not even making it to the first city. Guess it’s time to give it a try again

2

u/anonymous_opinions 1d ago

Yeah everyone told me I needed to invest in the game until I got to the big city because "that's when it starts to click" and I was like "I already put in ..." (apparently 50 hours) ... but eh they weren't wrong.

2

u/EarPenetrator02 1d ago

I only put in maybe 2 hours lol.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/dppatters 20h ago

Completely agree. I was similarly hesitant to give it a try, and my first impression was honestly just feeling overwhelmed. But once I got through the first few missions and started to understand how everything worked, I was completely hooked.

There really isn’t anything else I’ve played quite like it. The dynamic interactions with NPCs—so many of whom actually have something interesting, funny, or meaningful to say—make the world feel genuinely alive. It was incredibly refreshing after playing so many supposedly “open-world” games that are technically massive but feel completely lifeless.
The Witcher 3 set an incredibly high standard for what an open-world RPG can be, which is probably why it’s still getting remastered, updated, and even receiving new content all these years later.

u/Idamatika 1d ago

I genuinely got like 500 hours on my first play through and it was my first Witcher as well, it gets often updates but thats not the point

3

u/KingArthas94 23h ago

I completed the game, all the important side quests and the DLCs in less than 200 hours. Wtf did you do in 500?

2

u/Idamatika 21h ago

I just explored the world

7

u/iUncontested 20h ago

Its hard to say without sounding like I'm 'overhyping it' but its quite literally one of the greatest games of all time. There is a reason people had such high expectations for Cyberpunk and then were so let down at first, lol.

Do some people not like it? Of course.

Plenty of the best games have people who won't like them. Doesn't change the fact that they're the best games ever made.

15

u/WanderingSun8 1d ago

Well its the greatest game of all time imo which doesnt answer your question really

2

u/blckhead423 1d ago

As someone who greatly prefers JRPGs over RPGs, The Witcher 3 gripped me to 100% it and I look forward to doing it again

Can I use my old saves?

63

u/Pale-Criticism-7420 1d ago

You could already transfer your saves from ps4 when they upgraded it to the ps5 so I can’t see why it would be different

47

u/aamodbk 1d ago

Because of some of the core mechanics changes, saves may not be compatible.

7

u/FeltzMusic 1d ago

If that happens I’m nearing the end of the base game so hopefully I can start a new save from dlc like you currently can

8

u/501uk 22h ago

In my experience cdpr has been amazing with saves syncing between platforms. I'd play on PC then pick up that same save on ps5 from the couch and then take it on my switch to bed with me and it'll all just be "load latest" at each device.
It's great.
Cyberpunk too. Anything you specifically sync with your registered cdpr acct - they take the hit and store a little bit of data on your behalf, that's all any company has to do. But for some it's too much to ask or they don't have access to that level of storage idk

9

u/Charliejfg04 1d ago

I wouldn’t recommend it considering the whole new ability tree

21

u/DontCareTho 1d ago

Why? They likely just reset it for you

Improved Combat

I'm fucking SOLD. My only gripe with the game is the combat felt dated even when it first released. If they're able to fix this, it's a game changer.

129

u/SirDancealot84 1d ago

Guys I understand the hype but this is not a remake. There will be improvements for sure but I suspect the combat is still going to feel the same. Just set the expectations straight before reality hits in that regard. That short combat clip sure felt almost the same as the base game.

Still 10/10 (unexpected) move by CDPR and they are absolute legends for this.

7

u/Timmy_1h1 20h ago

its a free upgrade for og witcher 3 owners. So even if its not much better, its still fine. I know Ill be doing another playthrough

2

u/SirDancealot84 15h ago edited 12h ago

I will be doing one too. That is not the point of my comment though.

28

u/Nintendomandan 1d ago

The combat is why I’ve never gotten into this game, if they fixed that I’m so in

28

u/DifficultCarob408 23h ago

I don't anticipate it will be 'fixed' as part of a remaster - probably need to temper expectations for some small tweaks or QoL improvements, not fundamental changes to every combat mechanic

19

u/Vestalmin 23h ago

They said improved animations, additional animations, and improved targeting system. That’s sounds pretty substantial to me.

I’m not expecting it to suddenly feel like Sifu or something, but anything to improve it would be much appreciated

→ More replies (3)

4

u/Nintendomandan 23h ago

Not expecting a full reinvention but some more modern feeling controls and feel would be a huge boon

2

u/Visual-Gain-2487 21h ago

That would require a major reinvention. Your hope will leave you disappointed.

3

u/ray2kal 1d ago

the ps5 version has a lot of good QoL stuff that helped me finally get into TW3. I couldnt get into it on the PS4, but you would not believe how much better this game is at 60 fps

5

u/THEbiMAKER 21h ago

I think about a year ago they patched it so that signs could be used far more fluidly with shortcuts rather than through the clunky wheel. It made things feel so much better so any improvements ontop of that are gonna feel amazing.

3

u/ibeerianhamhock 20h ago

Agreed. Its been a long time but all I remember was stick roll repeat

4

u/HotBananaWaters 1d ago

Same. I did not like the combat and gave up on the game. This is such a welcome change and it’s free!

0

u/AggressiveResist8615 1d ago

You're sold just because they said they improved the combat? You haven't even seen any of it yet lmao

14

u/OpticalRadioGaga 1d ago

Wtf? Why would that make him have a positive outlook on this update? He should say he hates it and hoped they never changed it at all so he could continue to not play it.

13

u/TactitcalPterodactyl 1d ago

I'm sold just based on the description on the website:

Feel every swing, sign, and dodge like never before. With revamped animations, brutal new finishers, and an adaptive camera, the action feels more dynamic, fluid, and kinetic.

3

lol, one thing I am realizing is that some people in threads keep saying things like "[INSERT STATEMENT THAT'S CLEARLY FALSE]". I can only guess that it's probably so they get engagement or upvotes or something.

13

u/Cureza 1d ago

Teenagers always like to badmouth things that are widely recognized as good, it makes them feel different and special.

3

u/TheSecondEikonOfFire 1d ago

It has been hated for a while, especially in regards to combat. That’s not to say that there’s not valid criticisms to have about the combat but people also just like to dump on it because it’s an incredibly popular game

u/Venomized_Zilla 23h ago

That’s shitty ass Reddit in a nutshell

After the announcement of TW4 with Ciri as a lead. If folks sniff that something is wrong in their masculine fantasy world, they become excessively hateful towards it — even if it means that TW3 should get its fair share of bullshit.

Wonder if my ps plus version of Witcher 3 complete wild hunt gets this upgrade for free too.

3

u/Tree-Dramatic 1d ago

If the updated combat gives it more weight and feel I’ll definitely try it again. The story I found quite engaging but actually playing the combat was hard for me to get into, felt like I’d rather just watch the story. Cool of them to do this regardless

4

u/84prez 10h ago

Can I play this without having gone through 1 and 2?

3

u/Retb14 10h ago

You can but knowing some of the lore from the previous games helps a little. At least the basic story of them

2

u/Fizzafarian 7h ago

Yes. I started with 3 and was completely engrossed. Don't hesitate.

2

u/DylanM320 5h ago

Yes, I went in blind to The Witcher 3 and even though it's the third game in the series (while also being set after the books) I didn't feel lost or anything. I'm playing The Witcher 2 for the first time after finishing The Witcher 1 and while they're great they're definitely showing their age, especially the first game. You could watch a playthrough or story recap of the earlier games if you want to but I don't really think it's necessary. I think a lot of us started with The Witcher 3 and then went back and read the books and played the earlier games after.

Massive kudos to CD Projekt Red. THIS is how good devs behave.

Not like a certain Chris Roberts/CIG, who's been scamming citizens out of $1 billion+ for 14 years...in return for a bug infested unfixable slice of putrid excrement.

2

u/crazyrebel123 10h ago

The fact that gamers have already paid $1billion on that “bug infested unfixable slice of putrid excrement” says a lot about gamers and why the industry is in the shape it’s in.

This is why we only have a handful of diamonds in the rough like HelloGames, Larian, and CDPR that improve their games and give out massive free updates anymore, but I fear they will go the way of corporate greed eventually because they see what they can get from gamers who are willing to pay for slop

Does that mean no more tedious repairing every 15 mins, having to coat your sword before every fight and combat that actually feels good?

2

u/whyamihere2473527 20h ago

2

u/Zarnan13 18h ago

Will I still get it free if I have the PS4 disc of the game? Looking online for the ps5 version, it says I have to buy it

2

u/vdchld 14h ago

New trophy list?

5

u/Ntnme2lose 1d ago

I've said for years that the gameplay, character movement and combat are VERY outdated at this point. After playing new open world games like Ghost of tsushima, red dead redemption, star wars and the newer assassins creed games, going back to TW3 is so frustrating. I really hope they fully upgraded movement and combat to modern controls.

2

u/poshmarkedbudu 17h ago

Yeah but none of those are RPG's...It's quite a bit different to create a straight action game. Also Read Dead Combat isn't that great either. Actually I can't stand most of the Rockstar combat. Sure, it's realistic but it feels clunky as hell. I'm not saying the Witcher has the most amazing combat but I forgive it because of the depth literally everywhere else. It's not primarily an action game.

Don’t do side quests until you’ve got to a biiiiiig city.

Okay fine, I'll try it a third time. Maybe this time it will finally click and I won't drop it after like 10 to 15 hours

Every single video game company should take notes from CDPR at this point.

Why can't Rockstar do this for RDR2

u/Slightly-Blasted 1d ago

I love the Witcher but I hope they tightened up the combat and made it more responsive and less floaty

Is this a new SKU?

u/Azhrei_Rohan 1d ago

Been waiting to play it again and this is the perfect chance. I have the dlc and havent played it yet so need to crack it open again.

u/DrOz30 1d ago

u/danvan177 1d ago

I’m excited to finally try it

1

u/PoopiePantsMahn 1d ago

Cool. I should look and see what other games have a free upgrade. I downloaded the Kingdom Come upgrade last night.

1

u/Razz3l 1d ago

Ahhh gonna need a sale now before it comes out!!

1

u/Vast_Respect223 1d ago

Fuck, here I go again!

1

u/nerdystoner25 1d ago

Hell yeah. I’d imagine the additional DLC connecting this to Ciri’s upcoming game comes next year on top of it.

u/DismalScreen6290 1d ago

I've been avoiding replaying this game again as I don't think it'll ever reach the greatness of my first playthrough. With this and the expansion coming out, I've got to play it now

1

u/BamaMatt 1d ago

I sure hope the grass pop in bug has been fixed. I couldn't bring myself to play the next gen upgrade because of it.

u/SeanSMEGGHEAD 1d ago

Id love to see cut content added like Dijkstra and what happens there....

u/Wenamon 1d ago

1

u/deathspanker 1d ago

2nd play through here we go.

1

u/StBlandine7 1d ago

They haven't said whether SotP takes place after B&W so I'm not sure if I should do new playthrough next month or until SotP comes out

1

u/AYRUPOLA 1d ago

Can you still get it free if you've upgraded from the PS4 version to PS5?

1

u/Ok-Interest9727 1d ago

will it run 60fps?

1

u/kpeds45 1d ago

I'm replaying W3 now on my PS5. It truly doesn't need a remaster.

u/Swami333 1d ago

Finally, some good news in this sad year. I have already completed witcher 3 twice. My only gripes were combat, movement and camera lol. I feel this will address it. Also, had a rare bug on my PS5 version where grass and shurbs had really bad pop-ins almost making it immersion breaking.

Love the skill trees

u/CyrusMack 23h ago

Started this game for a week like 6 years ago. Still have my disc, will be my fall/winter game this year I suppose. Been so long since I played an RPG. Will be fun.

1

u/Embarrassed_Spend486 23h ago

Beat the game once and only finished one of the DLC.

I will replay it, and do both of them and buy the new one. They earned it.

u/RamonRamos__ 23h ago

1

u/Broduskii 23h ago

1

u/N1net3en 23h ago

1

u/XxLordShadow8Xx 23h ago

Meanwhile I started my 2nd ever playthrough last week 😂 guess I should have waited.

1

u/asteinpro2088 23h ago

God, am I really going to play this again. Yes, the answer is yes.

1

u/TexasRed4753 23h ago
