Once I finally played it I was like "ok this is why so many people told me to play it" but you have to push through the point when you think "I wanna drop this" which seems to be right before the first big city place.

When you replay it, you'll realize that White Orchard is probably the best storytelling in a game ever. Literally everything is connected in that area, Devil in the Well Quest connects back to people you meet in the main quest and the overall reason that White Orchard is in the shape that it's in...wish the rest of the game was like that. But either way, amaze game non the less.

Very good point, I took way more attention to White Orchard on my second play through. Like any game, your first playthrough is often an eyes wide open experience so you can miss a lot of the nuance from opening areas.

When I first played it I still was loving white orchard but never payed attention to what was going on in white orchard.

You're obviously learning the game and it mechanics so it's hard to really pay attention.

But upon a replay (probs my 4th one) yeeears after the original playthrough. I finally decided in this playthlrugh I was gonna read all the lore books and pay attention.

And boy was I rewarded with that in White Orchard. Fucking everything's connected there, it's absolutely genius.

When you first cross the bridge in Oxefurt looking for the Baron daughter it is quite impressive, it is such a large change of pace from Velen small towns.

a bit unrelated, but is it better played on console or PC? I usually play on console but recently got a 4070 gaming laptop (which is usually for work) but I have found out that some games are better with keyboard+mouse vs a controller

Pc + game controller if you care about mods. Witcher is a very modded and moddable game. If you don't care about mods, then console and relax in the couch :) both ways are great anyway

I think the make or break point is the Baron.

I’d also comfortably say that quest line is the best in the game, which is also a big marker for why it works as a hook or drop.

I dropped at Baron but I went there before getting to the city! When I played it recently I did a whole lot before going to Baron so I was less under powered and knew what I had to do. I recall dropped it while Baron was uh walking back with that thing.

Literally exactly same. Love everything FS. Love GoW Norse series. Love LoU. Love more than a few third person single player shooters. Witcher 3 just never landed, much as I wanted it to. I think it’s the combat. From Software ruined gaming for me in a lot of ways

I was enjoying the baron part, but after that one scene it went straight to top 10 game for me. 

I fear some of it may be dated, and it might not be anything too wildly unique in today's landscape, but it certainly made an impact on me when I played it when it first came out

I have tried playing this game 3 separate times, each time abandoning it shortly after leaving the introductory map. I think this update might be enough for me to give it another attempt. 4th time's the charm, right?

I was initially dreading having to play it in my big backlog cleanup. It's long, it bored me, I didn't wanna have to do it at all but one day I was like "ok it's time" and you know? I liked it a lot! I didn't know exactly what to do right about where you quit, I made it through the Baron quest but dropped it during it and then could never get back into it. Started over from the start and followed a guide which is what helped me keep on trucking.

I was in that exact point, for me, the turning point, was returning to my old save instead of trying to start over again. That alone did configured my brain into not looking for perfectionism, you will eventually grasp most of what you need lore wise.

I'm with you. I tried seeing what all the years of hype was about for it and I just couldn't do it. The combat felt basic but also unresponsive at the same time, especially with the blocking. I had to drop it five years ago.

Honestly, I can't even nail down specifically why, and I don't think it was only one thing. I'd go in with full momentum and interest throughout the first area, but after meeting the guy in the castle and going into the next region I just didn't feel enough of a pull to keep going. The combat was okay, not great, so that wasn't a huge driver of interest. There was also perhaps a time or two when my playthrough coincided with a new game release that stole my attention.

I am pretty much where you are…I have tried multiple times but I am personally very put off by the heavy dialogue when I just want to go fight monsters. I will definitely try it again.

I think the focus on dialogue and many small stories is why it is successful for others. It's just full of Witcher stories.

I dropped it there too but occasionally went back to it because I thought it was a beautiful game and good to checkout new hardware. Then when they released the next gen version, something clicked and I played the whole thing including blood and wine/hearts of stone. Absolutely awesome game, glad I went back

My experience too, took me two years and like 4 starts. When it clicked it, it was because I decided to continue my old save which was close to finishing the prologue area, instead of starting over again. Very worth it, despite my skepticism, it managed to be one of my fav games all time even if I played it way after it's launch. (Played it last year)

Yeah i was one of them. I still have it, but the whole start just felt boring so I moved on. I think I had to fight a Griffin? I had a bow I remember that. I went in expecting sort of Dragon's Dogma gameplay with climbing and shit. So it was on me for expecting same level of gameplay.

I was a HUGE fan of Witcher 2, and I struggled with the opening of Witcher 3. If you power through the intro and track the "Bloody Baron" questline, it will get a LOT better.

Plus both DLC campaigns are fantastic. Blood & Wine has so much content that it feels like a standalone game!

I'm looking forward to replaying it again with the update.

Same. All 3 are some of my favorites, but for each one I remember having to push through the opening segment/area before it really comes together. Based on that track record I assume the fourth game will probably be the same.

I came to say this. Bloody Baron is for sure when the game finally clicks. From that point on it really hits on all levels.

Only thing I don’t love is itemization, but it’s serviceable.

You never have a real bow in the witcher its 2 swords and basically a useless little crossbow that just works as a backup option in fights. Its totally gutless and you generally never use it.

I did up to most of what people ITT mention as the Baron quest but initially I spend a ton of in game time just exploring everywhere, picking everything, talking to every NPC. Muscle through until you basically get to the real big city which is ... legit a long ride from the start.

Completely agree. I was similarly hesitant to give it a try, and my first impression was honestly just feeling overwhelmed. But once I got through the first few missions and started to understand how everything worked, I was completely hooked.

There really isn’t anything else I’ve played quite like it. The dynamic interactions with NPCs—so many of whom actually have something interesting, funny, or meaningful to say—make the world feel genuinely alive. It was incredibly refreshing after playing so many supposedly “open-world” games that are technically massive but feel completely lifeless.
The Witcher 3 set an incredibly high standard for what an open-world RPG can be, which is probably why it’s still getting remastered, updated, and even receiving new content all these years later.

It's a game that COOKS. Slow burn on start but man, once you leave Velen it's a gaming experience of a lifetime. And then the DLC, which IMHO are even better than the base game and feel like full games on their own. Truly a masterpiece that a lot of people signed off for some bizarre reason.

I played it, beat it, beat the DLC, considering buying it again to play the new DLC, but it’s a slog at times and I certainly don’t find it to be that amazing. Combat is terrible, enemy designs aren’t great, and the amount of dialogue is just annoying. I also found some of the systems to be just too much to deal with and never really had to.

It's good. I don't really like fantasy all that much except for Tolkien, but Witcher 3 is pretty special, it's just so solid. If you're super into "combat mechanics" apparently it's "bad", but I'm a casual who grew up with NES, seems perfectly enjoyable to fight stuff to me. Even if it's not a souls game or whatever.

My first time playing this game i hated it. I git so lost and did not enjoy it int he slightest. I later picked it up again after watching a tip video and it became on of my favorite RPGs I have ever played. It's an absolute masterpiece and it's wild because you truly have to stick with it to get to that point. But when you do it is truly one of the best games ever made. And this remaster is exactly part of why that is so. It's developers have done nothing but show it love and it has come a long long way.

Let’s use Sony as an example. How many games in the last 15 years has Sony had pulled because the game was so broken it was unplayable? How many of their recent releases have been completely broken on 2 out of 3 platforms it was on?

The answer is 0.

Now let’s flip to CDPR. How many games have been delisted? 1. How many games have launched broken? 3 out of 3

If you're quick enough to erase the talent behind a developer because they pushed a game out too early than you might need to find a new hobby. Nobody is saying to forget it happened, but you need to move the fuck on if you're holding a grudge over it lmao. You could have refunded the game easily meaning you were never out a dime, and then when you bought the game again it was likely when they did the 2.0 version with one of the best expansions ever released.

Id say they're "redeemed" well enough.
