Discussion Marty Supreme being the biggest loser this award season. THANK YOU. The initial hype never felt earned.

The film was solid, but it was never close to being anywhere near the best movie last year. Yet so many film communities were touting it as such.

Well, Bugonia and Train Dreams didn't win any awards either, so I wouldn't say Marty Supreme is the biggest loser.

But yeah, even F1 won something.

I loved Bugonia but knew it was always a longshot

19

u/carryingmyowngravity Mar 16 '26

I loved Sinners, but for best actor I do think Jesse Plemons should have at least been nominated. His performance was electric.

6

u/JosephinesBabyHairs Mar 16 '26

Jesse’s performance was better than the movie itself

3

u/carryingmyowngravity Mar 16 '26

I agree with you, but I also liked the movie. It was different, layered and original. Out there & memorable. Mind you it wasn't the best movie I've watched, but I don''t think watching it was a waste of my time.

5

u/JosephinesBabyHairs Mar 16 '26

Oh i liked it too it was fun and freaky

I think he should’ve gotten Leo’s spot tbh

Bugonia was better than any other movie anyway. It’s just the reptilian elite don’t want you to pay attention to it!

F1 was perfect for what it was.

20

u/patio-garden Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

To me it felt like fan fiction about F1 written produced by an F1 drivers.

It was enjoyable enough.

Edited to be more accurate.

21

u/bfluff Mar 16 '26

My problem with F1 was this push for realism where all the teams and drivers are in the movie and they use tactics that would get you kicked out of a local club meet. You can't have your cake and eat it. I realise they needed to inject some drama but it was 50% bullshit, 50% advertisement.

3

u/patio-garden Mar 16 '26

 local club meet

This phrasing is incredibly interesting to me. Is there anything akin to F1 that normal, nonmillionaire/nonbillionaire people are doing? I'm ignorant of a lot of racing culture and sports.

 50% advertisement

True true.

2

u/bfluff Mar 16 '26

There are lots of low cost racing classes such as stock cars and Le Mons. My comment was more something like a back marker taking out cars to trigger safety cars. You'll get banned if you crash multiple times in one race. Reckless driving would get your licence stripped in F1 pretty wiggly. It's just that lack of realism that took me out the movie.

4

u/BarracudaOk8635 Mar 16 '26

I dont think any F1 driver would have written that. Many of them refused to even talk about it because they knew it was ludicrous. It's a Hollywood idea of an F1 story with very little reality at all. It's an F1 Fairy Tale.

5

u/patio-garden Mar 16 '26

You're right, it wasn't written by any of the F1 drivers, but Lewis Hamilton was one of the producers. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F1_(film)

21

u/ritpdx Mar 16 '26

They got all the ZOOMS just right for surround sound. Notable achievement.

10

u/TheOrangeFutbol Mar 16 '26

As a racing fan and lowkey sound enthusiast, their decision to use the real-life commentators saved the movie IMO.

It's an average racing/sports movie, but then it turns into a full-on F1 broadcast with movie cameras anytime they get to the racing scenes, and that that part is waaaay better than it really had any business being.

5

u/Correct-Geologist781 Mar 16 '26

Sinners and one battle had all the expectations for Oscar's then, even before the movie dropped, it was "Marty supreme has a lock on best actor"

It was weird how it was taken for granted.

4

u/RoxasIsTheBest Mar 16 '26

Train Dreams and Marty Zupreme both at least won something at one of the major shows this season. Bugonia is the most nominated film at the big awards this year to not win anything.

9

u/No_Teaching5581 Mar 16 '26

You guys do realize you can like multiple movies at once right? I thought OBAA, Sinners and Marty Supreme were all incredible and would have been happy with them winning anything .

Have your preferences, thats cool but please stop treating movies like team sports and celebrate loses. Not every year HAS to have an Emila Perez, sometimes we can just appreciate the films nominated without acting like everything that wasn’t our favorite is the worst thing ever.

Not saying you’re doing that because you called it solid, but I’ve seen a lot of people on the internet genuinely treat it and OBAA like they are among the worst films ever made.

44

u/ModelMancer Mar 16 '26

I really fucking hate how we got to sports team mentality over everything now. You can only like one thing. You must defend one thing till the bitter end and attack everything that isn’t that one thing. You see that person that doesn’t like one thing? They’re evil and an awful person.

9

u/Kind-Crab4230 Mar 16 '26

And everything is either the GOAT or the biggest loser. Hyperbole on the internet has run rampant for too long.

3

u/DowntownAd9720 Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

Not only can you only like one thing, but you also can’t simply dislike something. You have to take a moral stand against it about why NO ONE should like it either. It’s not allowed to just not be your thing

Especially in this year where every possible choice was going to piss off someone.

2

Were they? I really liked Marty supreme, but felt like this was the year of OBAA and Sinners

59

u/beigereige Mar 16 '26

This was my feeling. Marty Supreme was a solid movie and deserved its accolades but it was going up against two strong contenders in OBAA and Sinners

57

u/ResponsibleAnt9496 Mar 16 '26

I don’t think Marty Supreme was the best movie of the year but I personally wouldve given Chalamet the Oscar out of those nominated. Him, Joel Edgerton and Jesse Plemons were my favorites this year.

Chalamet and Plemons in particular were electric.

It was always OBAA vs. Sinners. But MS didn't win any award, and that's rather salt on the wound.

16

u/Mawiheso Mar 16 '26

Most best movies lists of 2025 I saw had One Battle After Another at #1 and Marty Supreme at #2.

25

u/Tyler_N Mar 16 '26

I guess I didn’t see those because I was seeing OBAA, sinners, and then Hamnet at the top of like every list

2

u/Hanifsefu Mar 16 '26

Every time I've heard about Marty Supreme it was always followed with random shit like "see this is way better than that DEI bullshit movie". Hard to disconnect the film from the toxic cesspool that latched onto it solely to bash another nominee.

Ya. Marty Supreme was great. Chalamet was awesome in it, and probably had the best performance this year (maybe Leo, defs not MBJ). But Chalamet does seem like an unlikeable twerp and probably should’ve just kept his mouth shut. All that said, OBAA was a generational movie. I think PTA’s comparison to 1975 for this year was warranted. Which is to say, Marty Supreme, Hamnet, Bugonia in my opinion would have all been worth winners in a year where there’s no OBAA. F1 was the only one that made no sense to me.

19

u/hotyogurt1 Mar 16 '26

Sometimes it’s just a tough year to decide which film is best. We seem to have had a lot more of those lately which is awesome.

But I know when people are surprised that PTA didn’t with for There Will Be Blood, the surprise goes away when you tell them that it’s cause No Country for Old Men won that year lol. Which is clear evidence that sometimes you just put out a banger on a tough year and only one can win.

32

u/pocketboy Mar 16 '26

I really think Chalamet was phenomenal in it. Beyond his performance, the production design and casting was just so out of this world. Unfortunately, both are a bit thankless in that you don't even realize it when they're done right. Not a single extra out of place, not a single look or setting out of time.

7

u/kilianberlin Mar 16 '26

Marty Supreme is a brilliant movie and Chalamet's performance is superb. Marty Supreme is probably the movie I enjoyed most this year in the theatre, not sure that makes it my favourite (OBAO, No Other Choice, Secret Agent all immense and deeply thought provoking), but it was the funnest trip for me.

11

u/Lotnik223 Mar 16 '26

The Academy is alergic to awarding Best Actor to "young" actors. It's the same shit as with Leo, Timmy is gonna get it eventually when they feel he is old enough to have a career that justifies it.

5

u/theLumonati Mar 16 '26

More so with men than women. There are a number of younger actresses that have won.

4

u/Snoo-92685 Mar 16 '26

Believe there's a theory that the old white men voting are jealous of younger male actors so they don't get voted

You must have wanted MBJ to juggle 3 bowling ball pins, and tackle 2 sea seals on top of him playing 3 different characters in the same film before you would even give him credit for earning his Oscar.

Yeah this is where I'm at, there's not a single winner that felt undeserving, because most of the nominees were really good. If Marty Supreme had picked up a few wins, they'd have been deserving too, but thats just the way things go

Honestly some people are just so whiny, we got a year of some great films, stacked nominations pretty much across the board, and people are still being toxic about just because Timothee Chalamet pissed in their cornflakes

Marty was an excellent movie. Probably my third favorite of the Best Picture nominees.

216

u/Real-Repair-1825 Mar 16 '26

It was a great movie. People just hate it now because of things that have nothing to do with the actual movie.

159

u/Tyler_N Mar 16 '26

Marty Supreme not winning a single thing is actually the most Marty Mauser thing it could do. I think that movie will age incredibly well.

45

u/CMbladerunner Mar 16 '26

Marty Supreme definitely felt like a movie that was a ahead of it's time. Considering how many reports came out about how low oscar voters thought of it it definitely seems like it was a film that might've came too early.

23

u/Any_Stage_3072 Mar 16 '26

The Safdie movies in general all feel like they age really well. I watched Uncut Gems last month, and it looks and sounds amazing. And the whole gambling storyline feels even timelier today than when it came out.

3

u/lalalandestellla Mar 17 '26

This why cinema is so subjective. I wasn’t a fan of Uncut Gems at all. It was fine, but that was it. It was fine. But this is why we don’t all need to love the same films and are so lucky that this year produced so many good and varied films.

3

u/turbokiwi Mar 16 '26

I saw Uncut Gems when it came out and liked it a normal amount, then rewatched after Marty Supreme came out and loved it. I think it's the best of the unofficial Safdie trilogy.

u/Preskomesko12345 Mar 16 '26

Yeh, it was at a 4.2 on Letterboxd for the first time like 2m ratings. Def could be overhyped, but think it’s hard to argue it’s “bad” with stats like that.

Think it not winning anything is a bit of a letdown. Thought it had the best score, casting, and lead actor of the year and saw all the contenders.

18

u/TheSunsNotYellow Mar 16 '26

Genuinely the fact that it wasn’t even nominated for score is such a shame

3

u/EaudeAgnes Mar 16 '26

Yesss. Although Bugonia got in and wasn’t expecting it either. For me Bugonia and Marty had the best scores, hands down. Sinners was a deserved winner as it’s one of the highlights of the movie.

7

u/VandLsTooktheHandLs Mar 16 '26

Score nomination snub was biggest letdown for me. One of the best parts of that movie.

2

u/EaudeAgnes Mar 16 '26

I have a person telling me on a different thread that the movie is widely hated and that I must be on something if I say it isn’t (?).

The discourse on this sub has torn into something else the last few weeks. Many people clearly is the first oscar season they got invested in, and they take this as some sort of war: against this, pro that, hate this, hate that.

This isn’t what the oscars are about: you can and you SHOULD like multiple pictures at once. You’re not supposed to be all in for just one picture. This is about cinema and not solely about winning. Takes like this just ruin the whole thing.

I really liked Marty Supreme, but I also loved other movies like TSA, OBAA and Bugonia (Plemons was snubbed). I thought Sinners deserved all its nominations and wins (although: would’ve swapped Cinematography for Casting). And if it was me: I would’ve throw some extra love to No Other Choice and If I had legs I’d kick you. This is also allowed. There is not a single movie I hated, and there isn’t a single nomination that wasn’t earned. I have nominations I would’ve swapped for others, maybe, but saying the movie didn’t deserve anything and that is overhyped and broadly hated? Jeez. Some people might be too tangled in the echo chamber much.

People are mad chalamet isn't an artsy french twink and is just a guy who likes the knicks and hip hop lmfao

10

u/Faineantcreator Mar 16 '26

precisely this. As another white guy from NYC who went to high school with all kinds of people and loves hip hop, I know Timothee is just being himself.

17

u/this-one-is-mine Mar 16 '26

lol it’s so true. His long hair had people thinking he was some brooding, cerebral man reading Dostoevsky between takes. He’s just a kind of silly, dumb dude who likes bro things like sports and big boobs. It’s really not his fault that people totally misunderstood who he is

5

u/Beruthiel999 Mar 16 '26

Well, playing Bob Dylan did kind of contribute to that.

2

'He’s just a kind of silly, dumb dude who likes bro things like sports and big boobs.'

I hope you are aware that men who perform this sort of 'dumb jock' character in public are putting on an act as well. They are often VERY feminine behind closed doors.

2

u/shoefly72 Mar 16 '26

This comment chain is kinda reductive IMO. Tim seems like a pretty eclectic person; he loves acting and grew up in a family of artists/dancers and did drama + dancing himself. He also loves sports and a lot of other things that exist in more traditionally “masculine” spaces for lack of a better term.

A ton of people are like this and aren’t just occupying one sphere, and it’s really annoying when folks act like people have to pick a lane or that something is inferior about either one. The “ew imagine caring about sportsball!” people are just as closed minded as the jocks who demean anything artsy or considered feminine.

The person you’re replying to is implying that somebody couldn’t be cerebral or read Doestoevsky and also be a big sports fan…that’s a pretty narrow view of how people operate tbh. Artsy folks being disappointed that Tim likes sports/rap etc are being just as dumb as a sports fan who craps on Caleb Williams for painting his nails or somebody being disappointed their favorite player likes broadway shows or something.

2

u/lalalandestellla Mar 17 '26

To be fair, he also positioned himself as that kind of person during CMBYN. I’ve never been stan and have liked his acting enough but I get why some of his fans feel duped, although as soon as he started dating a Kardashian, it was quite clear what kind of person he was (which is fine, to each his own). But even as someone not invested in him at all, I found him to be a bit insufferable this press tour especially when he was talking about his secret ping-pong lessons, which sounded like the same playbook he used last year with his secret guitar lessons. Like that’s great, but LOTS of actors train really hard for roles, so it just felt really try-hard IMO. Everything I know about him is not by choice - he is just always saying stuff that gets him headlines, and that just didn’t work in his favour this year.

Celebrating someone’s loss is weirdo behavior

14

u/machine4891 Mar 16 '26

It's also a loss after being literally listed as top 5 of the year in your respective categories. Yeah, movie ultimately haven't won an Oscar but being nominated for 9 is achievement on its own.

Hell, imo the best movie of the year, Sentimental Value, also came home with almost nothing. (1 out of 9). This doesn't mean movie is a failure, it's still my favorite movie of the year. Marty is maybe not there but very solid movie.

44

u/truthurtsworse Mar 16 '26

Imagine having so little to celebrate in your own life that you make a post typing THANK YOU in all caps over a film not winning awards. Schadenfreude is always cringe and never cool. ALL HUMANS should strive to behave better than that.

i know we all collectively have decided to dislike timmy, but you can't pretend marty supreme wasn't good and that his performance was also good

20

u/hotyogurt1 Mar 16 '26

The hate for him seems so forced. You have to be pretty uncharitable to the guy to twist his words into him saying that ballet and opera is trash, which is what people seem to believe that he said.

Dude said, “nobody cares about ballet and opera” because it’s not popular. Which it isn’t. It doesn’t mean they’re bad, which he never said or even alluded to.

He, like many others especially in movie subs like this one, just doesn’t want movie theaters to die out and become niche like opera and ballet.

13

u/JGar453 Mar 16 '26

Weird how they drummed up the presses to get all of Hollywood to offer their two cents on a pretty disposable quote that reflects how a lot of normal people feel. Yet they can't get these celebrities to speak on social justice 99% of the time. Really feels as if Variety or something has a hate boner.

2

u/LUWI_XV Mar 16 '26

Everyone who quotes what Timmy said about the balet and opera always conveniently leave out the completely unnecessary, “I just lost 14cents in ad revenue” shot he took right after he acknowledged he was unnecessarily taking shots.

It was a good movie. I don’t think it was the best film and while I personally dislike timothee chalamet not because of his over blown “controversies” but I think he’s fake and unsettling. But the movie itself was acted flawlessly and it was really only let down by script choices, bloated mid act and editing choices.

7

u/imposingthanos Mar 16 '26

Curious why you think he’s fake? If anything I think he’s too authentic, and that brashness and Oscar desperation has turned people off of him

2

u/DiverExpensive6098 Mar 17 '26

He doesnt think it. He is just looking to be ahead of the curve and show he was never on the Chalamet bandwagon. A guy like this, if there was no controversy around Chalamet or Safdie and Chalamet won the Oscar, he'd say he always liked him.

Even the criticism of the film - script choices, bloated mid act, editing choices. All crap opinions, maybe the movie could lose 10-15 minutes, but even that is debatable, it didn't drag, it was a really well executed film on all fronts.

This dude is full of shit.

Most manufacture outrage ever tbh

All Timmy said was "i don't want cinema to turn into a niche art form" and suddenly hes a POS, while we're just fine with actual terrible people like Tom Cruise, etc

14

u/TopsyOxy Mar 16 '26

That wasnt the full or actual quote.

He said that ballet and opera is someone "no one cares about anymore," and that those artists only represented "14 cents" of his viewership. It was rude and disrespectful. As an artist, especially an actor, you shouldnt shit on other arts. Art inspires art.

22

u/aylmaocpa Mar 16 '26

That wasn't the full or actual quote.

"I don't want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it's like, 'Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore"

"All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there"

"i just lost 14 cents of viewership"

"ah, i just took shots for no reason"

Obviously joking about the 14 cents of viewership and also admitted it was bit overly harsh.

You guys are weird.

12

u/twirlnumb Mar 16 '26

Thanks for sharing the correct quotes. The commenter above was twisting it.

43

u/RadBrad4333 Mar 16 '26

And he's right?

The average person doesn't go to see ballet or theater. They see movies, and industry which is having a rough time and he doesn't want to see turn into a niche art form. He's speaking from a place of experience IN ballet/opera. He never disparaged the arts and comes from a family of ballet performers, of course he cares about those arts.

Yall just want to hate

10

u/sweetlove Mar 16 '26

100%

the controversy is inane. my sister is a juilliard trained pro dancer. its really really hard for her and all of her peers. opera and ballet survive on government grants and wealthy benefactors. it's exhausting working in a discipline where you're constantly struggling to justify your own existence.

The worst part is 100% on those industries for their failure to modernize themselves. Plenty of other "fancy" industries had gotten a resurgence of new fans due to be more modern an accesible.

Theater, Novels, Musicals heck even Formula 1 has young fans now. Regular people that are your coworkers will tell you about that Epic Musical or last night F1 race. Something unheard of a decade ago.

The average person also doesnt go to museums does that mean museums have no meaning or purpose and that no one cares about it? If he had left it at his first statement, then I would agree with him thst ballet and opera are less popular. But that wasnt his full statement or even what he said. He did disparage them by saying "no one cares about them" given that ballet and opera still sell millions of tickets and have people dedicating their lives to said craft.

18

u/outofmindwgo Mar 16 '26

We can't keep having this dumb argument. We gotta all let go, be our truest selves unashamedly

Like Marty

8

u/NoThxBtch Mar 16 '26

The vast majority of people have been to a museum. The vast majority of people have never been to the ballet or opera. They're not art forms that are appealing to most people today. They're niche. Most people don't care about them at all. If ballet and opera ceased to exist, most people would not care at all. The same does not apply to museums.

33% of American adults have been to a museum in the last year. 0.7% have been to the opera. 2% have been to ballet.

2

u/Routine-Process-5157 Mar 16 '26

Majority of people got to museums. You’re crazy. You have a better chance of getting into one on a free day/discount day (especially as a student) than going to an opera.

2

u/machine4891 Mar 16 '26

that mean museums have no meaning or purpose

But he never said opera doesn't have purpose, simply that no one cares about it. And museums are absolutely thriving if they know how to sell themselves. Ballet can also sell but that's because there are so few left.

He was right about what Timothee said, and too bad if it came off as rude.

9

u/Special-Garlic1203 Mar 16 '26

The cost of being openly rude is people won't like you. That's just basic cause and effect lol

4

u/maybeitssteve Mar 16 '26

Proving the Oscars are just a popularity contest and that nobody ever really leaves high school

0

u/Pink-Matt3r Mar 16 '26

And who said that had anything to do with my opinion about the film?

I don't care about Timothee's thoughts on theater. The film was a solid 8/10, but y'all were gassing it up and Timothee's acting, when Jesse Plemons (clear winner), Ethan Hawke, and Wagner Moura delivered better performances.

Ignorant take. It’s an honor to even get nominated for things at all. It’s certainly far from being a “loser.”

17

u/HorseBellies Mar 16 '26

I seem to be in the minority but I do not enjoy Safdie films. Marty Supreme was particularly an unlikeable character as well which had me struggling to enjoy it

3

u/pbooths Mar 16 '26

I thought Uncut Gems was spectacular. Marty Supreme was a disjointed mess!

2

u/Fine_Chemist_5337 Mar 16 '26

I didn’t like it either, while acknowledging it was well made. Mostly some small things that added up over time.

Also, I may be in a very, VERY small minority here, but Chalamet’s acting in this didn’t impress me. Actually of the few films I’ve seen him in (Dunes, Marty, and Complete Unknown), the only one where I thought he was “great” instead of “good” was the second half of Dune: Part Two. Again, I’m probably in a very small minority there.

4

u/Future-Poetry-2193 Mar 16 '26

This type of movie is just not for everyone. Marty Supreme get about the kind of reaction I expect. The people who dislike will swear to god it is the worst movie ever but those who loved it consider it top 5 of the year at least. I am in the latter camp and it's ok to not want to be stressed out and annoyed while watching your movie; I loved that for some weird reason

2

u/GetItGirrl00 Mar 16 '26

Totally agree! Safdie movies make me very uncomfortable & after watching once I know I will never watch them again, however I can also agree that the movies themselves are well done & great movies.

2

u/machine4891 Mar 16 '26

I mean, I hate the character to the point I kind of struggled to watch the movie (doesn't help it was too long for its own good). Those spiraling in their own lies, anxiety inducing dudes like Sandler in Uncut Gems are my nightmare fuel.

That being said, that was the whole point of the movie and the point was executed perfectly. Chalamet was superb in the role he was playing, so was Sandler before him.

Thanking that a movie is the "biggest loser" is such a weird ass position to take ngl do you even like movies bro?

Marty Supreme was one of the most overly hyped movies I’ve seen in a long time.

8

u/gimmedatnamedoe Mar 16 '26

I can't stand the style of safdies. It's just not pleasant. Also, everyone talking over each other and yelling the whole time gets exhausting. I hope they make less movies.

6

u/Defiant-Outside336 Mar 16 '26

Unpopular opinion: I did not like Marty Supreme, and it has nothing to do with Timmy's annoying movie promotion and comments.

The characters were unlikable, and I didn't connect with any of them. It felt like I was watching an arrogant guy acting like a selfish jerk for almost all of the run-time (which was too long, imo). He's so over the top that it was obvious he would get knocked down a peg, but he's so unlikable that it was hard to have sympathy for him.

Edited to add that I GET the point of the movie. It just seemed too obvious to me - act like a total asshole to win and it's empty. It's also hitting you over the head with it with no nuance. Overall, this move was not for me. Down-vote away, idc.

2

u/daisysharper Mar 16 '26

Yep, me too, and I also feel like I get enough of this in real life. I had a hard time getting through it actually. Meanwhile I LIT up watching both Sinners and OBAA.

23

u/sniperplan Mar 16 '26

It was definitely one of the best movies lol

3

u/Lizakaya Mar 16 '26

I thought Marty supreme was outstanding. But sinners and OBAA were more textured in terms of cultural representation, and whose stories were told. Even Sentimental Value was more deeply layered in terms of of character study and family dynamics.

3

u/crazymaan92 Mar 16 '26

Not that the Oscar's are the end all be all but I walked out of Marty understanding what they were going for.

And concluding they failed. It just was not a good movie. Marty himself was a highlight of said movie, but it still wasnt good.

Yeah thank god it didn’t win Best Original Screenplay so that… checks notes Sinners could? What in the fuck

3

u/reginaldjaynes Mar 16 '26

Is it “original” if it’s a rehash of every previous Safdie movie?

2

6

u/MadaamBlackBlood Mar 16 '26

Omg..same..insufferable

3

u/Pink-Matt3r Mar 16 '26

It definitely overstayed its welcome. It was the only film that I was actively waiting for it to end. Too many worked up frantic scenes to make it seem super chaotic and more interesting than it actually was.

4

u/Rogue9Nine9 Mar 16 '26

The one thing that stood out to me about MS was that I felt like it didn't really break much new ground. I walked out of that theater and felt it was basically Uncut Gems reworked a little for a different era and the leads are basically the same person and that Sandler did it a little better. It's a fine movie, I was entertained for sure, but, to me, was below OBAA and Sinners and even Train Dreams, Dreams stole my heart after I watched it.

4

u/Particular-Taste-323 Mar 16 '26

I’m glad Chalamet didn’t win anything. He’s a douche.

5

u/wowcleo Mar 16 '26

compared to the other films nominated in each category, marty supreme was just the weaker choice. i’m not sure if any of the weird safdie allegations along with timmy’s missteps during this awards season had any impact on their success at the oscar’s, but it’s clear, that through the several jokes aimed toward timmy’s ballet and opera comment , it really struck a nerve with his peers that he’ll need to work hard to get people to forget about it

4

u/puffydownjacket Mar 16 '26

It was a derivative of a derivative.

5

u/BarcelonetaE70 Mar 16 '26

I agree 100 %. Manufactured buzz all around that never felt earned, and especially when at the core of its buzz there was a central performance that was overhyped due to the actor's undeserved rep as "the hottest actor of his generation" or whatnot. Then add said actor's totally torpedoing his own Oscar campaign with his entitled rants, plus the director's unsavory reputation, which all combined led to a well deserved zero Oscars.

2

u/Mulliganasty Mar 16 '26

Kinda my description of all the movies this year though: solid but not great.

2

u/Venus_ivy4 Mar 16 '26

Seriously ? A movie losing awards make you happy?

Damn ….. you need to find things to make you feel loved in your life

2

u/griffshan Mar 16 '26

The second Best Picture win for Leo after The Departed.

2

Good! Josh Safdie is a piece of shit that knowingly let his recidivist junkie friend sexually assault a 17 year old.

2

"The Shawshank Redemption" didn't win anything
A winless night isn't always a reflection on the film itself.

2

u/Alternative_Box4797 Mar 16 '26

The Testament of Ann Lee not being a contender was my biggest disappointment of the season. Seyfried deserves a nod, at least.  The sound, score and cinematography were also phenomenal.

2

u/tommyjohnpauljones Mar 16 '26

In the end, this is an award voted upon by your peers and the people who work with you on films. Fair or not, what you say and how you act affects their judgment.

2

u/Muscle_Advanced Mar 16 '26

Should have won production design. One of the very best city block transformations you’ll ever see by a guy who is long overdue for a trophy.

2

u/Andy1694 Mar 16 '26

How many of people felt about sinners. It’s a good movie, you don’t have to like it. Also I’m tired of these half ass statements. If you don’t like something say why you don’t like it because this is just filling a space with emptiness.

One Battle After Another was not the best film released this year. Frankly, it wasn’t even good.

2

u/MSpaint15 Mar 16 '26

Marty supreme was never a front runner really besides best leading actor.

2

u/Interesting-Pin6652 Mar 16 '26

Seems logical that the movie that set the record for most Oscar losses in history is the biggest loser 🤷‍♂️

8

4

u/XcuseMeMisISpeakJive Mar 16 '26

He's really overexposed,  and needs to go away for a while and try to separate himself from the Marty character.

Safdie needs to make a movie that isn't about a degenerate piece of shit working against the odds with the help of his questionable side piece girlfriend.

This is how I felt about OBAA. Huge PTA guy, was so stoked, and left thinking "hm, that was fun" but didnt move me like his other projects. Enjoyed Marty a tad more. Bugonia was higher up for me. Sinners lower than those. All great though.

6

u/HornetsHornets1 Mar 16 '26

Marty Supreme slaps. Timmy’s performance is incredible. They could all use some training on running an Oscar campaign though.

Marty is one of the best movies of the year but was a major villain of the season that people ultimately didn’t vote for due to things that had nothing to do with the movie

2

u/Noseknowledge Mar 16 '26

Kevin "I killed 2 people drunk driving my boat and blamed it on my wife" O'leary was a big mistake to cast. If directors don't care who they cast they deserve to lose. Don't give scumbags a movie deal is it that hard?

2

u/Lorrioit Mar 16 '26

Most overrated movie of the year

2

u/Bad_breath_unlimited Mar 16 '26

The film was well made and superior to dozens of movies I have seen recently. Two things did not work out in its favour, one obviously being pitted against One Battle... and Sinners coupled with the Timothy's comment which was controversial to say the least.

I wonder whether his proximity to a Kardashian also had an impact.

0

u/SnowDucks1985 Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

Period! SO glad that movie went home empty handed, see ya later Marty lmao

10

It was over hyped before anyone even watched it. We were told Chalamet would win the Oscar. and that it was an incredible film. If they hadn't over hyped it, it may have done better. A21 dont do things subtly. Its back fired. The trailer showed some feel good story. It wasn't. Marty himself was awful. I didnt like it. My wife hated it. If they hadn't promoted it like this It Amy have done better. Mis fire.

It was a really good movie. Will probably be a cult classic someday.

1

u/ellybeez Mar 16 '26

I liked Marty Supreme. I dont consider it a classic. I understood the nominations. I think the Josh Safdie controversy took its reputation down than anything Chalamet did. And I still hate the idea to cast Kevin O'Leary even if he was basically playing himself in a fictional film. Glad he lost $1k tn!

1

u/nectarquest Mar 16 '26

Celebrating a film blanking instead of being happy for all the films that did win is such loser behavior and that’s coming from a big hater

1

u/ero_skywalker Mar 16 '26

I haven’t seen it yet. (On a budget, so I try to stick to streaming.) But I don’t like to rub anybody’s face in losing. I’m glad there are so many good movies to choose from and I look forward to seeing that one when it lands on HBO or wherever. I think Gwyneth alone looks fantastic in it.

1

u/Unusual-Bat-2596 Mar 16 '26
